DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE
Rotary International 2009-2010 President John Kenny has placed his emphasis on continuing the success of projects involving Water / Hunger / Health / Literacy. His reasoning is that we must do well in the areas that are so needful in the world. His challenge, and theme, is “THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN YOUR HANDS”. How true a statement when so much de-pends on what we do and say. Thus, in keeping with a program of what we do well and continue to build on our success, my 2009-2010 goals are:
MEMBERSHIP: Net one per club. Remember, be creative, be resourceful, and go after those that will benefit Rotary.
DISTRICT TRAINING: Offer every avenue of learning to enhance Rotarians with the necessary knowledge to be productive Rotarians.
FOUNDATION: Increase per capita giving to $140 per member. This would bring our District giving to a little over $390,000 USD. With hard work and giving hearts, this goal is achievable.
BILL GATES POLIO CHALLENGE: A 325 Million Dollar challenge that can and will be met by Rotarians. District wide equates to $2,000 per club per year.
ROTARY SERVICE: Work towards a 100% District participation in world and community projects. Every club’s goal will be to participate in areas of water / hunger / health / literacy.
SHELTER BOX PROGRAM: Promote District wide support of the Shelter Box Program. Emphasis to have each club provides a minimum of 1 shelter box per club per year.
COMMUNICATION: Broaden the accessibility of clubs for questions / answers from the District.
VISIBLE: Be visible within your community. This is the area that will continually support our efforts in projects dedicated to community and world service.
By working hard, proper communication, and personal dedication, we will have a roadmap for success and WE CAN DO ALL OF THE ABOVE. Remember- “THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN YOUR HANDS”.

ROTARY FOUNDER
ROTARY FOUNDER
PAUL P. HARRIS Paul P. Harris (1868-1947), a lawyer, is the founder of Rotary.
Over one hundred years ago, on February 23, 1905 he formed the first club with three of his law clients; a coal merchant, a mining engineer, and a merchant tailor. The nucleus was formed for the thousands of Rotary clubs which were later organized throughout the world. Paul Harris named the new club "Rotary" because the members met in rotation in their various places of business. Club membership grew rapidly.
Almost every member had come to Chicago from a small town and in the Rotary club they found an opportunity for the intimate acquaintance-ship of their boyhood days. When Paul Harris became president of the club in its third year, he strove to extend Rotary to other cities because he was convinced that the Rotary Club could be developed into an important service movement.
The second Rotary club was founded in San Francisco in 1908. In August 1910, when there were 16 clubs, the National Association of Rotary Clubs was organized. When clubs were formed in Canada and Great Britain, the name was changed, in 1912, to the International Association of Rotary Clubs. The name was shortened to Rotary International. Paul Harris was the first president of the National Association and the first president of the International Association.
When Paul Harris passed away in 1947, he was president emeritus of Rotary International. There were then some 6,000 Rotary clubs world-wide. To date, there are more than 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas - 1.2 million Rotarians and counting.
Mission StatementThe mission of Rotary International is to support its member clubs in fulfilling the Object of Rotary by:
Fostering unity among member clubs;•Strengthening and expanding Rotary around the world;•Communicating worldwide the work of Rotary; and •Providing a system of international administration•

THE ROTARY FOUNDATIONIn anticipation of The Rotary Foundation’s 100-year anniversary in 2017, the Trustees set out in 2005 to develop a 10-year vision with a 3-year plan to move the Foundation toward its second century of service.
The vision developed for the Foundation – Enabling Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace – became the basis for the Foundation’s new mission statement:
The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
Its motto: Doing Good in the World
