ShELDoN CoNCERT hALLThe 2009–2010 concert series at The Sheldon was billed as our “wish list”

season — with a line-up that included Sheldon series debuts by some of our

most sought-after artists, including Marty Stuart, Bettye Lavette, Cyrus

Chestnut, Chad and Jeremy, Eliane Elias, Steve Tyrell, Patty Loveless and The

irish Rovers. The season also included some of our favorite returning musicians

such as Tommy Emmanuel, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Dee Dee Bridgewater,

Rhonda vincent, Blind Boys of Alabama, Alison Brown, Nicholas Payton and

Ricky Skaggs and kentucky Thunder! The Friends of The Sheldon celebrated

three successful benefit concerts, with artists Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie and

the Guthrie Family, and Jewel. The incomparable Wynton Marsalis and the

Jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra returned for a sold-out Gala, proving that

St. Louis remains a great jazz town. The Sheldon Chorale and Sheldon Classics

series continued to grow, artistically and in attendance with David halen,

Peter henderson, Bjorn Ranheim and James ivey celebrating the birthdays

of Schumann, Chopin, Paderewski and Barber, and the Chorale performing

their usual repertoire of beautiful sacred and secular choral music.

“Notes from home” continued to showcase the best in local and regional

musicians in every genre, and helped dozens of non-profit groups raise money for

their organizations. in a very special Notes From home program, some of St. Louis’

top performers came together for a one-night-only fundraiser for Doctors Without

Borders’ earthquake relief efforts in haiti. The amazing event raised over $20,000.

ShELDoN ART GALLERiESThe Sheldon Art Galleries kicked off their season with the major exhibition

Legends of St. Louis Blues Music, a multi-media exhibit featuring archival

photographs, biographies, sound clips, video and ephemera, celebrating the

rich history of blues music in St. Louis. The year-long exhibit also explored the

topic more thoroughly through galley talks, panel discussions and companion

exhibits such as Backpack Blues and Nothin’ But the Blues, both featuring art

by area students. Additional highlights included photographs by internationally

recognized artists William Christenberry, William Earle Williams and Jessika

Miekeley; Kuna Mola: Maintaining Tradition Amid Change; The Jesuit Influence on

Baroque Architecture; Tape Drawings by Erik Spehn; architectural photographs

of italy by Jay Wolke; and paintings by Wallace herdon Smith.

unique gallery fundraisers included ArtSounds: Blues and Bling, featuring

music throughout the galleries composed by Sheldon executive director Paul

Reuter and performed by kim Massie, and the harris Armstrong house Tour,

an amazing self-guided tour of four homes in the Sappington Spur enclave, all

designed by modernist architect harris Armstrong.

The Galleries also continued to serve the community through a variety of

educational programs such as Tuesday evening and Saturday morning Gallery

Talks and Master Class Workshops for children, all in support of the galleries’

mission to nurture a love of the arts. All programs and exhibitions were offered

free of charge.

EDuCATioNAL AND ouTREACh PRoGRAMSWith concert programs in jazz, folk, classical, blues, and Broadway music,

and art gallery workshops in photography, drawing and collage, Sheldon

Educational Programs were enjoyed by over 20,000 students in the 2009–

2010 season. Through programs such as “The Jazz Story,” “Folk Music in the

Melting Pot,” “Nothin’ But the Blues,” “Classical Connections,” “The American

Musical” and “Lewis and Clark,” kids of all ages learned about the history of

music and how it impacts their lives and their world. Ron Carter, the director

of jazz studies at Northern illinois university, returned once again for a day of

workshops with top jazz students from St. Charles West high School, Metro

high School and East St. Louis high School.

Gallery workshops included a photography workshop with Jessika Miekeley,

a workshop with Barry Leibman and a class from Metro high School making

collages in the style of Leibman’s assemblage paintings based on Mahler’s Ninth

Symphony, a teachers’ workshop with William Earle Williams, a professional

development day for St. Louis Public Schools’ art teachers and a visual Arts

Consortium with local arts professors and arts organization leaders.

Thanks to generous grants, The Sheldon toured educational concerts

to schools throughout Missouri and illinois, as well as the Juvenile Detention

Center in St. Louis and St. Louis Children’s hospital. outreach also extended

to adults this past season, as, thanks to the Mid-America Arts Alliance, Dennis

owsley travelled to Washington, Mo; Ste. Genevieve, Mo; and Mt. vernon,

iL to present multi-media talks on the importance and history of jazz music.

Fredbird once again graced The Sheldon stage for the annual Sheldon/

Cardinals Care Redbird Rookies concerts, which teach young ballplayers

about the similarities between jazz and baseball — both requiring teamwork,

improvisation and respect for fellow players.

FACiLiTy RENTALS AND EvENTSThe historic and elegant Sheldon Ballroom, Sheldon Concert hall, Louis

Spiering Room and kemper Atrium hosted a wide range of weddings,

receptions, concerts, business meetings, fundraisers and other community

events. included were The Bob Costas Gala, y98 Mega Wedding, the Grand

Center Gala, First Night, kETC’s Donnybash and the Community Women

Against hardship fundraiser. Companies such as Emerson, Blue Cross/Blue

Shield, St. Luke’s hospital, Fleishman hillard, Saint Louis university and

more held meetings, award ceremonies and dinners.
