I’ve recently finished the internship required to be admitted in the Ordem dos Arquitectos, equivalent to BSA FAS. For the past year I’ve been col-laborating with ARX Portugal, in which I had the opportunity to acquire further knowledge and expertise related to office working ways.

I am now looking for both a professional and a personal experience that comes from living in a different country, where I can improve the knowl-edge gained through the University and professional practice.

I am particularly interested in the idea of living and working in Switzerland for the opportunity to experience different forms of thinking architecture, new working methods, as well as the exceptional competence acknowl-edged of the swiss professional practice and construction. I recently visited your country and I was impressed with the quality of execution of some works of reference. Since then I kept the desire to develop a professional practice in a place where thought and construction interact so professionally, aiming for excellence, in favor of the outcome of taking the architecture to the people.

After one year of working experience I believe to be able to integrate a design team and to be an asset to a studio, not only by the critical point of view on the developing work but also by the enormous willingness to work and ambition to do more and better everyday.

I do not think that the linguistic barrier will be a setback and it won’t be hard to gain language fluency because I am quite eager to do so.

Acabei recentemente o estágio necessário à admissão à Ordem dos Arquitectos, equivalente BSA FAS. Durante o mesmo tive a oportunidade de trabalhar em colaboração com ARX Portugal, no qual adquiri experiência relativa ao funcio-namento de atelier.

Direcciono-me agora para uma experiência , tanto profissional como pessoal , de vida fora do país natal, onde poderei reforçar todo o saber acumulado, tanto na faculdade como proveniente da prática profissional.

Interessa-me particularmente a ideia de viver e trabalhar na Suiça, pela oportuni-dade de conhecer novas e diferentes formas de pensar a Arquitectura, outros métodos de trabalho, assim como pela excepcionalidade da competência profis-sional reconhecidas à prática profissional e à construção suiças. Recentemente visitei o vosso país e fiquei impressionado com a qualidade da execução de algu-mas obras de referência. Desde então que conservo a vontade de desenvolver um trabalho num lugar em que pensamento e construção interagem de forma tão profissional, almejando a excelência, em prol do resultado final de levar a Arquitectura às pessoas.

Após o balanço de um ano de experiência considero-me apto a integrar uma eq-uipa de projecto, assim como acredito ser uma mais valia para um atelier, não só pela perspectiva crítica sobre trabalho a desenvolver mas também pela pela von-tade de trabalhar mas também pela ambição de fazer cada vez mais e melhor.

Não entendo a barreira linguística como uma contrariedade e não terei dificul-dade em dominar fluentemente o idioma pois estou cheio de vontade para o fazer.

From a need of revitalizating an isled urban area within a dense context, the idea of a bridge-building, made out of structural timber, came to light, linking two areas of the city divided by the railway: Bairro do Rego and the Ressano Garcia’s plan.

The methodological approach was structured around three main factors: Function, concerning basic human needs; Context, which deals with con-strictions of the site; and Construction which relates to the technical aspects of building.

A partir de uma necessidade local de revitaliza-ção de uma zona insular urbana, num contexto de compactação e de densidade, surge a ideia de um edifício-ponte, em madeira, sobre a vía férrea que separa o Bairro do Rego das Avenidas Novas de Ressano Garcia.

A abordagem metodológica foi fundamentada em torno de três directrizes: Função, directamente rela-cionada com as necessidades humanas; Contexto, que lida com as urgências do lugar; e Construção, ligada aos aspectos técnicos do processo construti-vo.

This project was developed as a thesis for Master degree in Ar-chitecture from the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (FAUTL).

It was oriented by Professor Nuno Mateus, co-oriented by Pro-fessor Paulo Almeida, obtaining the rank of 19/20.

It was also awarded with the Secil Universities 2010 prize for Best Academic Project.

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido enquanto Tese de Mestrado em Arquitectura , pela Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (FAUTL).

Foi orientado pelo professor Nuno Mateus, co-orientado pelo professor Paulo Almeida, obtendo a classificação de 19/20.

Foi ainda distinguido com o Prémio Secil Universidades 2010 - Melhor projecto Académico.

The school was conceived as a modular system ca-pable of being deconstructed and built again using the same pieces. The module is built in Concrete hollow blocks and unlike common CHB, there is no need to use mortar. The interlocked bamboo canes makes each module tough enough to stand by itself.

Each module contains both a classroom and a sub-sequent school facilities. All the modules are linked with a pathway in each level: a covered play ground supporting the classrooms at the upper level; and at the lower one a corridor, supporting all the school amenities, which can be used as a canteen.

A escola foi concebida como um sistema modular capaz de ser desconstruído e construído recor-rentemente usando as mesmas peças. O módulo é construído em blocos furados de betão e ao con-trário de CHB comum, não existe a necessidade de utilização de argamassa. As canas de bambu inter-ligadas permitem que a estrutura seja autoportante.

Cada módulo contém uma sala de aula e uma área técnica escolar subseqüente. Os módulos estão ligados por um passadiço em cada piso: uma área de recreio coberto de apoio às salas de aula, no nível superior e um corredor, no nível inferior, po-dendo ser utilizado como cantina, de apoio a todas os as áreas complementares da escola.

Although not awarded it was qualified among the top 60 of 800 participations. It might also be found in the Building Trusts International’s facebook web-page.

It was conceived during the internship time spent in ARX Portugal.

Apesar de não ter sido premiado, ficou classificado entre os 60 melhores pro-postas de 800 concorrentes. Encotra-se na página do facebook do Building Trust International.

Our goal was to revitilize an abandoned set of old tanning tanks, located in the outskirts of the historic center of Guimarães. Although not part of the set of monuments featuring the city, this area presents itself as a highly cultural cluster.

The orthogonal array of tanks appears as the gen-erator matrix of the intervention, avoiding any harm-ful settlement, simply supporting wooden pallets.

The intervention in the currently abandoned site provides a new area of interest in the touristic route.

Tem-se como objectivo revitalizar a ruína de um conjunto de antigos tanques de curtição de peles, localizada na periferia do centro histórico da cidade de Guimarães, que apesar de não fazer parte do conjunto de monumentos que carcteriza esse nú-cleo, apresenta um elevado interesse cultural.

A matriz cartesiana dos tanques surge como matriz ordenadora da intervenção efémera, evitando-se qualquer apropriação nociva, simplesmente apoi-ando paletes de madeira.

Esta apropriação de um local actualmente abando-nado propicia um novo pólo no percurso turístico da cidade.

A sobreposição de paletes estende-se em altura, como uma extrusão do vazio dos tanques. Sobre estas estabelece-se um novo nível de paletes justapos-tas horizontalmente , não só como forma de abrigar o espaço da interven-ção, mas também como recurso con-strutivo que atribui à estrutura alguma resistência aos esforços horizontais

As an extrusion of the empty tanks the overlapped pallets grow in height. Over those it is established a new level of pallets horizontally juxtaposed, not only as a way to shelter the intervention, but also as a constructive resource, reinforc-ing the structure to the horizontal forces

The suspended pathway over the ruin, stuck between layers of pallets, is di-vided into sections that articulate dife-rent areas. The set of natural stone tanks is part of a proto-industrial tanning complex in the city of Guimarães. Its origin goes back to the thirteenth century, and pres-ents itself today as a disqualified area in need of redevelopment, as the site is already within the cutural heritage range

This work was developed as a participation in the ten-der competition Performance Architecture for the Eu-ropean Capital of Culture, with Daniela Andrade and Joana Batista.

It was not awarded, but the intellectual stimulus com-ing from its elaboration have been our greatest reward.

It was conceived during the internship time spent in ARX Portugal.

The collaboration with ARX consisted in a profes-sional internship where I had the opportunity to par-ticipate, mainly, in two different projects: a Cultural Center in Costa Nova and Museum of Art and col-lectionism in Cantanhede; and in the tender design for Gradola’s lybrary. My contribution not only cov-ers design project but also model making.

A colaboração com ARX consistiu num estágio Professional, onde tive a oportunidade de partici-par, principalmente, em dois projectos diferentes: Centro Socio-cultural da Costa Nova e Museu de Arte e Coleccionismo em Cantanhede, e do con-curso para o design de lybrary Gradola. Minha con-tribuição não só abrange a projecto de execução, mas também a construção de maquetas.

After finishing my Master Degree in Architecture I hd the oportunity to integrate a project team in ARX Por-tugal, which was designing a building completely made out of wood, for the northern coast of Portugal, over a sand dune.

Após a conclusão do Mestrado em Arquitectura tive a oportunidade de integrar uma equipa de projecto, em ARX Portugal, que se encontrava a desenvolver um edifício integralmente em madeira, sobre a duna, no Litoral Norte de Portugal.

They summarize all the work carried out in lmy spare time, when idle settles and I decide to take my sketchbook to draw “pieces” of Lisbon.
