bob stein stadium - dahlonega, ga

Home to the North Georgia baseball team, Bob Stein Stadium was constructed during the fall of 2008 and features a fi rst-class facility for the Saints. With 500 chair back seats, fans will enjoy a perfect venue for NCAA Baseball.

The newly constructed Bob Stein Stadium will house the Saints for the fi rst time in 2009 as it offers players, fans, and media a beautiful facility with the backdrop of the Dahlonega Mountains.

Since the original construction of the baseball complex, the dugouts, fi eld, and amenities have undergone changes and up-grades over the past six seasons. In 2005, the maintenance building was built along the left fi eld fence to house grounds crew equipment and team supplies. A new state of the art scoreboard was added prior to the 2008 season to complement the matrix board to give fans statistics and game information. B

North Georgia College & State University is a coeducational state uni-versity emphasizing strong liberal arts, as well as pre-professional, professional, and graduate programs. Serving as a liberal arts university for all of its students and as a military college for its Corps of Cadets, the university is distinct in many ways. As the only four-year public institution in northeast Georgia, NGCSU offers a quality college experience in a beautiful mountain setting, about an hour north of Atlanta. Specializing in leadership training and producing leaders since 1873, the uni-versity has been designated by the state as The Leadership Institution of Georgia . For more than 130 years , North Georgia College & State University has been helping students discover remarkable things about themselves and the world. Our graduates gain a solid foundation on which to build their lives --not only a quality edu-cation, but cherished memories of great ex-periences, lifelong friends and good times. The administration, faculty, and staff at North Georgia are dedicated to the education and traditional values which enable students to excel in whatever fi eld they pursue. Classes are small and atten-tion is personalized. Faculty, not graduate teaching assistants, do all of the teaching at North Georgia. Located in Dahlonega, Geor-gia, a small historic town in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, the university of-fers more than 50 majors to prepare stu-

dents for nearly any career. With more than 4,000 students, North Georgia College & State University is large enough to provide a wide array of opportunities and activities, but small enough to allow personal atten-tion from professors and to foster friend-ships among students. Nestled in the mountains, the gold-rush town of Dahlonega has kept its historic charm and spirit. In this town of fewer than 4,000, students easily walk to nearby res-taurants, shops, banks and churches. The campus is safe, clean, and friendly, with the excitement and entertainment of metro Atlanta only a 90-minute drive away. Surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest, North Georgia College & State University is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, with endless places for hiking, mountain climbing, hunting, fi shing, bird-watching, whitewater rafting, canoeing and camping. This area of North Georgia draws many visitors who enjoy its lush forests, stunning waterfalls and abundant wildlife.

Before coming to North Georgia, Potter served as the chief executive offi cer for the Board of Trustees overseeing the eight public universities in Mississippi since 2003. Prior to his position with the state commission, Potter served as President of Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., from 1999 until 2003. Delta State is a public, regional university of 4,000 students, with programs ranging from baccalaureate through doctoral degrees and an annual budget of $40 million. Potter also has held administrative and teaching posts at Syracuse University, in Syracuse, N.Y.; Denison University, in Granville, Ohio; and Skillman University, in Damaged, Phillipines. Randy Dunn enters his 13th year as Director of Athletics at North Georgia College & State University, and his 26th year overall at the Uni-versity.

Dunn served as the head men’s basketball coach for 14 years before retiring in 2003 to serve full-time as Director of Athletics. Dunn is an alumnus of North Geor-gia College, having played basketball for the Saints for three years, graduating in 1980 with a Bachelor’s De-gree in Health and Physical Education.

After completing his undergraduate degree at North Georgia, Dunn was an assistant coach at Georgia Southwestern State University, where he received his M.Ed. in Physical Education.

He became the assistant coach at the State University of West Geor-gia in 1981, before returning to North Georgia College in 1982. In 1996, Dunn led his team to the Georgia Athletic Conference regular season championship and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament where he was named the GAC Coach of the Year.

During his 12-year tenure as Director of Athletics, Dunn has over-seen the addition of three intercollegiate sports teams: women’s soccer, baseball and softball. The intercollegiate athletic program has produced 20 conference championships during his tenure in the Georgia Athletic Conference, the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference, the Southern States Athletic Conference and the Peach Belt Conference. Most recently, Dunn has overseen the transition of the North Georgia College & State University from NAIA to NCAA Division II.

Dunn is married to the former Susan Reed, and the couple has a 17-year old son, Jake, who attends North Hall High School.

Lindsay Reeves begins her ninth year with North Geor-gia College & State Univer-sity and her second year as Associate Director of Athlet-ics and third year as Senior Women’s Administrator.

In addition to her duties in the department of athletics, Reeves continues to teach in the Health & Physical Educa-tion Department and serves as the Director of the Human Performance Lab.

Reeves graduated from Ithaca College with a B.S. in Physi-cal Education and received her M.Ed. from the Univer-sity of North Carolina in Exercise Physiology.

Lindsay is married to Dave Reeves, and the couple has a son (Tim - 21) and a daughter (Kelly - 19).

A Tradition Continues

PBC Commissioner David Brunk presents Logan Sharrett with the 2008 Peach Belt Conference Tournament MVP Award fol-lowing the Saints 10-9 victory over Francis Marion in the championship game.

VISION STATEMENTThe Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participa-tion in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II.

We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to par-ticipate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations refl ect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing fi eld.

HISTORYSince its inception in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference has worked tirelessly to be-come one of the elite conferences in NCAA Division II. Now entering its 17th season with 24 national championships and 24 na-tional fi nalists, the PBC has accomplished that goal.

Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 12 champi-

onship sports with the addition of women’s soccer in the fall of 2000.

The conference traces its roots back to No-vember of 1988 when 11 schools fi rst met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, fi ve of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in 1991.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the fi rst of three golf championships the Cougars own.

The 2006-07 season continued the tradition of excellence the conference has estab-lished. The Columbus State baseball team reached the national championship game and USC Upstate fi nished just one stroke out of the lead in the golf national cham-pionships.

The seven charter members of the confer-ence were Armstrong Atlantic State Uni-versity, Columbus State University, Fran-cis Marion University, Georgia College &

State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modifi ed to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000.

Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State Univer-sity on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference wel-comed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia South-western State University in 2006.

David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk re-placed Marvin Vanover, who was the fi rst PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its sec-ond era begins.

overviewHead coach Tom Cantrell returns for his tenth year with a talented mix of pitchers and hitters as the Saints look to return to the NCAA Tournament for their second consecutive season.

Last year, North Georgia finished fourth in the Peach Belt Conference with a re-cord of 41-21 overall and 16-11 in the PBC. Heading into April, the Saints found themselves just two games over the .500 mark at 18-16 overall and two games under in Peach Belt Conference play at 8-10. After returning home from a three-game sweep at the hands of Fran-cis Marion University, North Georgia started a journey that saw them win 23 of their last 26 games to claim the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Champi-onship and a birth in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional. The Saints finished the season ranked 20th in the nation, one of six national rankings during the 2008 season.

North Georgia will go up against some of the best teams in the nation in the Peach Belt Conference, a league that is home to three baseball national cham-pionships in its history. The Saints will welcome the likes of Columbus State, Francis Marion, and Armstrong Atlan-tic to Bob Stein Stadium, while hosting Alabama-Huntsville, West Florida, and Valdosta State in non-conference ac-tion.

North Georgia will have plenty of chanc-es to play in their brand new stadium with 37 home games on the schedule this season. The Saints will host four Peach Belt Conference series at home, and hit the road for five three-game series in the league. North Georgia will also travel to Anderson University and West Georgia for single games, while playing a pair at Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Ten-nessee.

The 2009 team returns five starting posi-tion players from last yearʼs squad that outscored opponents 477-349 and hit .303 with 65 home runs and 673 hits. The pitching staff is returning eight pitchers from a year ago that combined for a 29-17 record. The Saints had a team ERA of 4.30 last season, and struck out 390 batters while opponants hit .269.

pitchingNine pitchers return from last year, including James Wiley and Michael Patton who combined to win 12 games in the starting rotation. Cantrell will look to senior transfer Tyler Mussle-white to jump into the rotation and anchor the rotation. Musslewhite comes to Dahlonega from the University of South Carolina, and Chipola College where he won a national championship in 2007.

Senior Garrett Lussi will be looked to for leadership in the pen as the right handed pitcher collected three wins last season.

Alex Simmons and Jesse Coxwell both saw limited action in the starting rota-tion last season, but appeared 21 times in relief and combined for five victories and 47 strikeouts in 81.2 innings of work.

Senior Garrett Lussi worked in 23 games last season, picking up three wins and posting an ERA of 3.89, while Jacob Rickett assumed the closers role by the end of the season and saved four games.

Newcomers Brandon Garcia, Andy Reid, Blake Hobby, and Matt Smith should all add depth and provide valu-able innings out of the bullpen.

Tom Cantrell is in his tenth season as head coach of the North Georgia baseball program in 2008-09.

In their fi rst year eligible for postseason play since entering the NCAA, Cantrell led his team to a tie for third place in the Peach Belt Conference regular season and ran through the PBC Tournament with four straight wins to claim the championship. The Saints fi n-ished the regular season winning 19 of 22 games and competed in their fi rst NCAA South Atlantic Regional.

His 2007 team fi nished their second season of competition at the NCAA Division II level and in the Peach Belt Conference, by fi nishing 34-22 (17-13 PBC). Cantrell reached a pair of milestones in the 2007 season, winning his 300th game at North Georgia and his 500th game overall. He was also awarded the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year Award.

In their inaugural year, 2006, in the NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference, the Saints fi nished with an overall record of 32-29 and a PBC record of 9-18. Under the direction of Cantrell, the Saints second baseman Brian Lauderdale was named PBC Player of the Year, South-Atlantic Player of the Year, third team NCAA Division II All-American, and signed a free-agent contract with the San Diego Padres.

In his nine years at North Georgia, Cantrell has amassed a 373-195 (.656) record and has posted a winning record at NGCSU in each of those nine seasons. Over his 12-year career at Georgia Perimeter College (DeKalb College) and North Georgia, he has a 550-247 (.690) overall record. Cantrell also has a sharp eye for spotting major league talent, 15 of his former players have signed professional contracts. Five of those 15 are currently in the majors: Nick Green with the Boston Red Rox, Marlon Byrd with the Texas Rangers, Adam Everett of the Detroit Tigers, Michael Barrett of the Toronto Blue Jays and Robby Hammock with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Cantrell came to North Georgia from Georgia Perimeter College (DeKalb College) where he spent nine years, four as head coach with a record of 177-52 (.773). While at GPC, Cantrellʼs teams produced two NJCAA All- Americans, fi ve NJCAA Academic All-Americans, 21 GJCAA All-Region, and two GJCAA Players of the Year.

In 1991, Cantrell returned to DeKalb as an assistant coach re-sponsible for recruiting. In his fi ve seasons as an assistant coach DeKalb compiled an impressive 204-94 record. In 1995 Cantrell was named GJCAA Assistant Coach-of-the Year.

In 1998, Cantrell guided DeKalb to its fi rst state championship since 1987. They also won the East Central District Champi-onship, and made an appearance at the JUCO World Series, DeKalbʼs fi rst appearance since 1977. Coach Cantrellʼs squads were consistently ranked nationally in the top twenty. For his ef-forts in 1998, Cantrell, was named GJCAA Coach-of-the-Year, as well as the East Central District Coach of the Year.

Born on November 10, 1965, in Habersham, Georgia, Cantrell was a two-time Georgia All-State shortstop at North Clayton High School. Following his senior season, Cantrell began his collegiate career at DeKalb College. At DeKalb, he hit .332 and was an All-Region shortstop his freshman year with the Patriots. Following an outstanding sophomore campaign, in which he hit .362, he was once again named to the All-Region. At the conclu-sion of his second year at DeKalb, the Atlanta Braves drafted him in the seventh round.

In 2008, North Georgia hit .303 as a team, the fourth highest team bat-ting average in school history while recording 65 home runs, the sec-ond highest number in program history. Tucker oversaw junior transfer Rob Flanigan who set school records of home runs with 20, slugging percentage at .735, and fi nished with a batting average of .403 while re-ceiving First-Team All-American honors and being drafted in the 29th round by the San Francisco Giants.

During 2007, the Saints hit .300 as a team, and then-freshman catcher Daniel Petitti led the Peach Belt Conference in runners thrown out at-tempting to steal. As a junior, he set a Kennesaw record as he caught 18 baserunners attempting to steal and picked off three additional runners for a combined 21 put-outs and a .429 percentage. During his time at Kennesaw, the Owls won the Peach Belt Conference Championship in 2002, competed in the regional playoffs all four years and won the South-Atlantic Regional in 2003, then went on to fi nish third in the college world series in that same year. The team also fi nished in the national rankings Top-10 in three of the four years.

Preseason Ranking - #21 April 1, 2008Record: 18-16

May 11, 2008Record: 41-19

After winning 23 of their last 26 games to end the regular season, the Saints entered their fi rst-ever Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the 4th seed, taking on Francis Marion University in the opening round. After powering past the Patriots 6-2, North Georgia erased a four-run defi cit to defeat GCSU 10-9 in extra innings in the second round and set up an epic showdown with rival Columbus State. The Saints found themselves tied 3-3 with the Cougars in the 7th inning, but All-American Rob Flanigan stepped to the plate and hit his second home run of the day that sealed the victory and sent North Georgia into the champi-onship games. After 18 runs were scored in the fi rst six innings of the title game, head coach Tom Cantrell called on junior Zach Black who came in and tossed four innings to pick up the victory and send North Georgia into celebration. “I canʼt say enough about what my players did,” Cantrell said in a post game press conference after the championship game. “These guys have been on a mission since April started, and they showed a lot of fi ght and never gave up.”
