Rachel Gatewood, ballet instructor at North Lakes and Denia Recreation Centers, recalls dancing as far back as she can remember. Her mother, Elizabeth Ashford, practically raised Rachel and her five other daughters in her dance studio. Through Elizabeth’s rich dance experience, Rachel learned ballet, tap, jazz, and even flamenco through Liz Gallego and Alta Gracia Asios Garcia.

Rachel went on to perform with the Fort Worth City Ballet while training with Bill Martin Viscount at the Southwest Ballet Center. During that time she attended a performing arts high school and then the University of North Texas.

Now in her third year of teaching at the recreation centers, Rachel passes on the same love of ballet to her students. Rachel says she has taught some students since the beginning, but she hopes to continue teaching all of her kids “right up into their pointe shoes.”

“My goal in teaching my preschool age students is to lead them to fall in love with dance.”

The staff at North Lakes Recreation Center knows many faces, but

they only consider one a true usual. Keith Shaffer, popularly known as

“Pops,” began his daily workout routine at North Lakes in 1987. He has

missed few days since; in fact, Shaffer has not skipped a day of his

program in the last seven years.“It’s because of this place that I’m still going strong,” says Shaffer,

who recently celebrated his 85th birthday. He now weighs what he did

in his Navy days during World War II. Shaffer works out six days a week, sometimes twice a day. In addition

to providing the means to a healthier lifestyle, Shaffer says North

Lakes feels like home.Every day Shaffer wears a distinctive blue cap with three signifi-cant parts - the Navy Seal, the words “North Lakes,” and the initials

“N.O.G.” for “nice, old guy.”

Texas Parks and Wildlife adminis-ters the National Recreational Trails Fund in Texas under the approval of the Federal Highway Administra-tion (FHWA). This federally funded program receives its funding from a portion of federal gas taxes paid on fuel used in non-highway recreational vehicles. The City of Denton was awarded these funds for the develop-ment of a new concrete walking and running trail at Denia Rec Center.

Special thanks to Cynthia Mayo Deckard, Landscape Architect, for the application of the grant and special thanks the park maintenance staff for working so hard in the summer heat to complete this trail.
