Tough Realities of Today’s Economy• Average wages/salary - $20.49 / hour x

2,080 hours / year = $42,619 average annualized salary

• National unemployment rate – 9.4% in May



Tough Realities of Today’s Economy• Medical costs annualized rate > 3.7%

• Education costs annualized rate > 2.8%

• Tobacco costs annualized rate > 28.8%

• Bankruptcy filings up 33.3% fye March ’09, (double since 2006)

What has worked in the past?• A strong, enthusiastic, passionate

Advisory Board Chair (ABC)

• Regular monthly Advisory Board (AB) meetings

• Committee structure

• Strategic planning meeting

• EVERYONE held responsible and accountable for a S.M.A.R.T. goal



What’s working out there now?• Connect business partners with kids (evolution of the

relationship)– Classroom presentations (an hour)

– Job shadowing (a half-day)

– Mentoring (once or twice a month)

– Student conferences / internship preparation (full day)

– Paid Internships (240 – 400 hours)

• Recognition as a reward

• You’ve got to ASK them!

– Give them a chance to say “YES”

• Pull at their heartstrings, before you pull at their purse strings



Stepping “Outside the Bun”

• Tutoring– Reading, math, other?

• Co-Mentoring middle-schoolers

• Summer camps

• Field day (races, competitions, games)



Other ideas?

• Recognition event at employer locations

• CEO announcement / news conference

• Media coverage of special

events

• Sponsorships on T-shirts



Next steps• Call and/or Email AB members

– Invite to Strategic Planning meeting in August or early September

• Strategic Planning– Brainstorm ideas (be creative, involve everyone in the

planning process)– Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals– Assign responsibilities– Report out progress at EACH AB meeting

• Involve EVERY AB member with kids
