j APSA executive director Michael Brintnall (left) and APSA president Peter Katzenstein (right) pose with Dr. Janda after he j received the Goodnow Award at the Awards Ceremony.

a scholar, mentor and lead- er, Kenneth Janda has shaped the development of political science and the political sci- ence community. Through

I his research, his institution building, and I his encouragement of innovation, he has j enlightened and encouraged political sci- i entists around the world. As a teacher, he j inspired his students to continue the pur- ; suit of international understanding, j His membership and service to the dis- I cipline and association have spanned 50 j years. In that time, he has taken on many j roles expanding the discipline he cares so j much about. As a colleague at Northwestern i University, he has served his department j since 1961, now as Payson S. Wild Professor I Emeritus. As a chair of the newly developed j Information and Technology in Politics Orga- ; nized Section, as well as a member, chair, j and advocate of the Political Organizations I and Parties Organized Section, he has spir- j ited these subfields forward with the cre- j ativity and pioneering leadership for which i he is known. He has written 13 books and j published more than 65 articles and book ; chapters.

He has contributed immensely to the fields of comparative politics, party poli- tics, and information technology both as a scholar and as a builder. He was among the first to bring the capacities of the com- puter to electoral studies, and then to the classroom- innovation recognized by awards from APSA and from the academic commu- nity at large. When he saw the discipline lacked a forum for scholarly discussion of political parties, he co-founded the journal Party Politics, and guided it to a position of eminence with an international voice. He has been recognized with the Samuel J. Elders- veld Lifetime Achievement Award from the Political Organizations and Parties Orga- nized Section, arid the Best Instructional Political Science Website from the Informa- tion Technology and Politics Organized Sec- tion of the association.

It is with deep appreciation for his dedi- cation to the profession that we presented to him the Frank J. Goodnow Award for Dis- tinguished Service. ■
