Golden Acres Genetics Performance Test & Harvest Report

South Texas Edition Each year, Golden Acres Genetics, Ltd. coordinates a corn and grain sorghum variety testing program to ensure product performance. Our tests are conducted at a variety of locations with varied soil types, moisture availability, herbicides, insecticides and farming practices. The results of these tests are an opportunity for corn and grain sorghum producers to make more informed decisions about the selection of varieties for their area. In 2009, farming was especially difficult has South Texas has suffered through a historic drought. Numerous Golden Acre Technology Evaluation (GATE) and Texas A&M plots were lost due to the extreme conditions.

GRAIN SORGHUM HYBRID PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

NUECES COUNTY, 2009

SUMMARY:This test was located on the Faske Farm east of Bishop on CR 6. Soil moisture conditions atplanting were marginal at planting depth, and rainfall was below normal in the growing season. Sorghum hybrids were evaluated for agronomic performance. The best performing hybrid in thistest was Garst 5401 at 1,879 pounds per acre, while the test average was 1,187 pounds per acre.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate commercially available and experimental grain sorghum hybrids growing underNueces County conditions in a side-by-side evaluation.

MATERIALS and METHODS:Grain sorghum hybrids were planted in a side-by-side comparison with a tester hybrid TR458 planted throughout the test to account for field variability. Each plot consisted of 8 rows 700 feetin length. Seed was planted using a IH Model 92 Cyclo-Air Planter. Soil moisture conditions atplanting were marginal at planting depth and soil temperature at planting was 70 degrees F.Rainfall in the season was below normal and rainfall occurred as follows; March 0 inch, April0.11 inch, May 1.21- inches, June 0.19 inch and July 0 inch for a total of 1.87 inches duringgrowing season. The plots were machine harvested on July 21, 2009 and weights obtained froman electronic weigh wagon.

Using the market price at harvest ($5.25 per cwt), the top yielding hybrid had a value of $98.64/acre,while the least productive hybrid was valued at $10.55 per acre, a difference of $88.09 per acre. Thissignificant difference between hybrids illustrates the need to continue to evaluate hybrids for theirproduction performance under local conditions.
