jewelers from around the world con-verge for the biggest jewelry show in the Western Hemisphere. There are thousands upon thousands of square feet of designers, manufacturers, equipment, technology, and supplies all related to the jewelry industry.

As always, Eastern Lighting Inc. will be in our same location in the ETS pavilion, booth number 61105. East-ern Lighting will be showing off the best LED products in the market as well as great options in metal halide.

Our product line ranges from metal halide track fixtures and recessed cans to the latest LED showcase and overhead lighting. We will also be displaying our latest development-our LED pendant light-as well as our LT8 retrofit lighting system.

Over the past few years, new technologies in lighting have proven to be quite helpful to the jewelry industry. In the past we were limited to halogen and fluorescent. Today we have increased options such as metal halide and LED.

What is LED? To start with, LED stands for “light emitting diode.” LED is like energizing a com-puter chip and emitting light from it. So why is LED so great for jewelry? There are many rea-

sons. Among them are the abil-ity to achieve proper color tem-perature, and the unbelievable way that it makes your jewelry sparkle and shine. However, nothing can beat seeing LED on your own jewelry with your own eyes.

We suggest that you make the biggest impact possible and display your products instead of just placing them inside the case. LED will really draw atten-tion to the jewelry in your show-

case. For this reason we recom-mend our FLX series. For the purpose of this article we are going to compare our FLX series to some other types of LED fix-tures on the market.

Our FLX series comes standard in brushed aluminum, with high powered diodes spaced 5.5 inches apart, and is available in many standard lengths starting at 17 inches and going up to 70 inches. The FLX series features the ability to customize the length to fit exactly into your showcase. The brackets mount either directly to the sides of your showcase or directly to the bottom of the glass. This enables easy adjustment of the light for maximum con-

trol. All of these features make the FLX series the best showcase LED fixture on the market today.

Now that you know the benefits of the FLX Series, let’s look at why it is the best. We regularly hear, “we want as many diodes

as possible very close together.” In LED technology one of the most important issues is thermal management. Thermal management basically means that you manage the amount of heat that builds up in the fixture. LED’s don’t emit heat in the form of radiation — like incandescent bulbs do. Rather, they dissipate heat through conduction and convection. The best example of this is a stop light in your local intersection that has been switched to an LED traffic signal. Sitting at the red light you may notice the many dots of light which are the LED’s. Many times you will see areas of light that are “out” or no longer illuminated. These patches of LED’s are out because of thermal man-agement problems. One of the biggest causes of this problem is placing LED’s too close together. That is why we place our LED’s at 5.5 inches apart. This al-lows good thermal management, while also maximizing the intensity of light. Placing multiple LED’s close together can compromise the useful life of the LED’s. Also, it is important to note that to use an LED, and get the maximum amount of light, it helps to place them farther apart. What about LED’s that are arrayed in clusters—like you may have seen in other fixtures? These are using 5mm LED’s and cannot compare to light intensity of the FLX. In other words, these 5mm LED’s are using only a fraction of a watt. On the other hand, the FLX uses high power LED’s. More specifically, we use Cree’s X-Lamp LED. Cree has a reputa-tion for the highest quality LED’s.

In addition to using high powered LED’s our FLX uses, a reflector cone is used to maximize the light output.
