Did you know that the average age of a resident in a homeless shelter is 9 years old?
Client Spotlight: Deborah L. Brown
Deborah L. Brown came to Shelter of Flint in 2006 as an addict, knowing that if she didn’t get some help, her life would be over. After a spending a month at the emer-gency shelter, Deborah moved into Shelter of Flint’s transitional housing program. “I LOVED IT,” she said. “It wasn’t all about rules and regulations like I thought it would be. They gave me the flexibility to go out to meet-ings and helped me get to my doctors appointments.” Three years later, Deborah is now back in her own apart-ment, volunteering for New Roads to Freedom and speaking to groups about overcoming addiction. When she’s not busy with all that, she’s volunteering at Shelter of Flint, managing the clothing donation garage or helping out in the kitchen. “If you’re willing to turn your life around,” says Deborah, “this is the place to do it.”

Back to School Party Shelter of Flint is partnering with Live3rd, a community service organization, for the sec-ond annual Back to School party at Rosewood Park Apartments this August. The Back to School party provides Shelter of Flint and Rosewood Development children with school supplies, food and fun. In addition to supplying over 200 children with school supplies, Live3rd will provide a MoonBounce and ice cream truck for the party. “Our goal
is to let children in our programs know they are no different from other children,” says Shelter of Flint case manager and party organizer Riochelle Bry-ant. “They may have been homeless at one point in their lives, but they have every ability to succeed, individually and academically.”

More than 75% of the families who come to the Shelter of Flint and accept the help and guidance offered through our programs become independent and move to a home of their own.
Board Member Spotlight
Pam Martin, an employee of McLaren Health System, mother and dedicated Board member, has been serving Shelter of Flint since 2007. She is the recent recipient of the President’s Volun-teer Service Award. Why do you support Shelter of Flint? It all started with the former Women's Only fundraiser. My friends and I participated in the race, but we also shopped for items the shelter needed: cleaning supplies, back to school items for the children, etc. When I saw first hand the difficulties that some
families face, it really motivated me to help more and to get some of my friends and co-workers involved, not just in writing checks but visiting the shelter facility and seeing what it’s like to not have a home. What did you learn about homelessness through working with Shelter? I have learned that homelessness is not always the result of poor choices. As many opportunities exist, just as many obstacles do too. So, I do what I can. I think the world would be a better place if we all learned to care and share more. You run our golf outing every year. What motivates you? Coordinating the golf outing is one of the most gratifying things I do. I am a nurse, and this is what nurses do. We take care of people. Not just in the hospital but also in the community. I cannot think of another career or activity I would rather do. I am in this world for this role. It is who I am.

Vegetable Garden
Thanks to the Keep Genesee County Beautiful Foundation, Shelter of Flint was again able to plant its urban flower and vegetable garden. Planted with love by staff and residents, all flowers and vegetables are grown from seed. This year’s crop produced a plethora of vegetables, including carrots, cucumbers, green beans, green peppers, lettuce, onions, pump-kins, squash, tomatoes and zucchini. All vegetables supplemented meals prepared for Shelter of Flint residents.
