Comments on the Papers Commentaires sur les epreuves

Overall CommentsThe year 2009 marked the seventh writings of the Fryer, Galois and Hypatia Contests. The FGH Contests aredesigned to give students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 an additional mathematical challenge during the school year, and one that requires full written solutions. Being able to do mathematics is an important skill; being able tocommunicate one’s findings (in mathematics or in any other field) is also very important.

We were very pleased this year to see another healthy increase in the number of participants in these Contests. In general, many students writing these Contests are doing a better job each year of writing clear solutions to theproblems. That being said, there is always work that can be done to help them improve these skills. Some studentsreduced their scores because they gave answers rather than solutions or presented untidy or illegible solutions.

The averages on the Fryer, Galois and Hypatia Contests this year were 24.9, 23.2 and 22.0, respectively. Wewill continue to try to keep the averages on these papers in this range. Here are some specific comments on theproblems.

Fryer Contest

1. Average: 7.3This problem was well done. In (c) and (d), some students ran into trouble because they carried throughdata from previous parts that was not intended to be carried through.

2. Average: 7.7This problem was also well done. Some students made careless arithmetic errors while others attempted toperform algebraic steps simultaneously that were meant to be performed consecutively. In part (d), manystudents had the correct idea, but did not list all of the solutions.

3. Average: 6.3In this problem, students who remembered the formula for the area of a circle and who recognized thatthey were dealing with a semi-circle had good success. A few students presented interesting solutions usingsymmetry. In problems of this sort, it is our belief that students should always leave their answers in exactform (for example, as 100π rather than as 314.159 . . .). We will try to communicate this fact more clearly inthe wording of the contests next year.

4. Average: 3.6This was a very interesting problem with numerous possible approaches. In part (a), some students lost amark for not distinguishing between the value of A and the sum of all of the digits in the units column.(That is, some students answered A = 202.) Students who had the same problem in (b) were not penalizeda second time. In part (c), some students developed the nine-digit pattern but needed to justify more fullythat the pattern continued for full marks. Some other patient students actually calculated each of the digitsof the sum by hand.

Galois Contest

1. Average: 8.5This question was well done by most students. In part (b), some students gave two answers, one each forred and black, rather than the probability that a student had red or black hair. In part (d), many studentsused trial and error to find a solution rather than solving algebraically, and so did not account for either thepossibility that there was only one solution or the possibility that multiple solutions might exist.

2. Average: 6.4This question was well done by students who knew how to find the equation of a straight line and find thelength of a line segment. In part (a), many students used the distance formula and neglected to deal withthe extraneous root in an appropriate fashion. Others simply said that the x-coordinates had to differ by 3without supporting their claim. Most of the errors in parts (b) and (c) were of a mechanical nature.

3

Page 4: 2009 Results Fryer Contest Galois Contest Hypatia Contest 2009

Comments on the Papers Commentaires sur les epreuves

3. Average: 6.4In part (a) a surprising number of students misused at least one of the Pythagorean Theorem and theformula for the area of a triangle. Part (b) was very well done, even if using an incorrect value form part (a).Part (c) was well done by many students. The most common errors were calculating the shaded area insidethe hexagon only, and forgetting to subtract the area of the white regions inside the hexagon.

4. Average: 1.9Many students were able to do parts (a) and (b) correctly. The most common error in part (c) was not givingsufficient explanation about how to build the integers in the intervals between factorials. There needed to besome definite and supported statements about how to construct the values between, for example, 1(1!)+2(2!)and 1(1!) + 2(2!) + 3(3!). Part (d) was done with reasonable success, and using some interesting methods. The most concise approach was to consider the average contribution of each factorial value and then multiplyby the number of integers which can be formed.

Hypatia Contest

1. Average: 8.2This problem was done very well, though many students included little in the way of explanation of theiranswers and work. In part (b), many students accounted for three possibilities: green eyes, brown hair, andboth green eyes and brown hair. As in Galois #1, many students solved part (d) by trial and error.

2. Average: 6.7In parts (a) and (b), a good number of students did a lot of simplification (such as choosing a particularvalue for the first term or the common difference) and solved the problem in that particular case, ratherthan solving the problem in the general case. While this did yield the correct answer, it did not receive fullmarks. In part (c), this approach led students into more trouble. In some cases, students got to an equation(such as 2a+ 5d = 60) but did not realize that they were done.

3. Average: 3.9This problem was not as well done as we had hoped. Some students got themselves immediately into troubleby locating point B(2, 0) at (0, 2). Others tried to cut the area of the triangle in half in (a) without havingthe line pass through B. In parts (b) and (c), there was a significant amount of trial and error used. In somecases, students did obtain the correct answer, but did not verify all of the conditions required (for example,in (b) that R lies on the line joining A to C).

4. Average 3.2Students had more success on this problem than we expected. Part (a) was generally well done, and manystudents had significant success in (b), even if they miscounted the number of faces on the solid. A commonconceptual error was projecting the entire solid down into two dimensions. A second interesting error in(c) occurred when students multiplied the average of the areas of the top face and the bottom face by theheight; can you see why this does not actually yield the correct answer?

Concours Fryer

1. Moyenne : 7,3Ce probleme a ete bien reussi.

2. Moyenne : 7,7Ce probleme a ete bien reussi.

5

Page 6: 2009 Results Fryer Contest Galois Contest Hypatia Contest 2009
