YorK CoLLEGE oVErViEW York College of Pennsylvania is a private-sector, independent institution of higher education, which focuses on offeringbaccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, education, public affairs, and nursing. Stu-dents may also enroll in courses leading to the associate degree and master’s degree. The College draws its 4,600 full-time undergraduate and 1,500 part-time and graduate students from some 30 states and36 foreign countries. Typically, 50% of York’s freshmen hail from Pennsylvania; 30% from New York and New Jersey; and15% from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and Connecticut. Others come from states up and down the East Coast andfrom abroad. Most of York’s part-time and graduate students reside and are employed in the greater York Area. The College occupies a 190-acre, park-like campus, just beyond the York city (pop. 50,000) limits, in the rolling hills ofthe south central part of the state. Close to the heart of “Pennsylvania Dutch” country, York is one hour from Baltimore; twohours from Philadelphia or Washington, DC; and four hours from New York City, Pittsburgh, or Richmond. Nearly half ofits undergraduate students reside in college housing in the vicinity of the campus. York College envisions itself as a center of affordable academic excellence and has received favorable national recogni-tion for its success in offering a higher education program of high quality at a tuition rate substantially lower than the ratescharged by institutions of similar type, scope, and distinction. York’s effective control of tuition costs stems principallyfrom the long-term, generous support of the College by its friends in the York community and its alumni. This support hasprovided both superior debt-free physical facilities and permanent endowment resources sufficient to fund institutionalscholarships and financial aid for needy students. York uses this fiscal strength in turn to provide a kind of “scholarship” toeach of its students in the form of relatively modest charges for tuition and campus housing. York College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges andSchools and has specialized accreditation for its business, nursing, allied health, and recreation programs. York College isproud of its ongoing efforts in gender equity. As per the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994, information regardingYCP’s gender equity statistics is available for review in the office of the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation. Stu-dents can request a copy of the report from the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation.

With every new season comes new hope. New hopethat this year will be better than the last. New hope thatthis will be the breakthrough year. New hope thatmaybe, just maybe, this could be the year.

That new hope rings true for the York College fieldhockey squad as they enter the 2009 campaign.

“We are very optimistic about what we could accom-plish this season,” Spartan head coach Jamie Swartzsaid. “We learned and developed as a team, as an entireprogram last year. That development could lead to somegood things this fall.”

The Spartans do in fact have much to be optimisticabout as 11 players who saw significant time in 2008 re-turn to the Spartan lineup this season, including a trio ofall-conference performers. Senior forward Megan Span-gler, senior defender Veronica Eltz, and senior goal-keeper Claire Rekitzke are each coming off All-CapitalAthletic Conference seasons and will look to build uponthose successes in 2009.

“Those three players give us a strong core of talent,”Swartz commented. “It helps us that they each bringsomething different to the field. To have proven all-conference players throughout the field will give us anedge this season.”

Spangler had a breakout year in 2008 and comes intothe 2009 campaign as York’s top returning goal-scorer.She tallied 36 points, second only to career goals-scoredleader and since-departed April McFarland, on 16 goalsand four assists en route to her first All-CAC selection.Gifted with brilliant stick skills and a knack for findingthe back of the cage, Spangler will be called upon tostep up her game even more this season.

“She is one of the top scorers in our conference, nodoubt about it,” Swartz raved about her All-CAC for-ward. “She consistently puts herself in the right positionand she is not afraid to mix it up in front of the cage.Spangler could be an extremely potent offensive forcefor us this year.”

Eltz brings an aggressive and consistent style toYork’s defensive third. A tough player who is exception-ally fit, Eltz became York’s top defender last year as shecontinually thwarted opponents’ attacks. Not only a superb defender, Eltz has been a strong leader for theSpartans. As she now heads into her second year of captaincy, the senior will look to galvanize the Yorksquad and lead them up the CAC ladder.

“Eltz does so many good things for this squad,”Swartz commented. “She is an outstanding defensiveplayer, who belongs in the upper echelon of players ather position. Not only that but she is also a leader in thetruest sense of the word. She does what needs to be doneand gets everyone to follow suit.”

Over the past two seasons, Rekitzke has proven to beone of the conference’s best net minders, evidenced byher back-to-back All-CAC selections. She started 20 ofYork’s 21 contests last season, posting a 2.71 goalsagainst average. If Rekitzke, who is a superb communi-cator with exceptional technical skill, can stay focusedthroughout the entire season in 2009, she could be thekey cog in a very successful season.

“Rekitzke has so much ability,” Swartz said. “Hercombination of experience and skill is unsurpassed. Shecould do some incredible things for us this season.”

Joining the aforementioned Spangler in the Spartans’offensive ranks are five returners who could make sig-nificant impacts on the 2009 squad. Despite the loss ofMcFarland, Swartz believes this year’s offensive groupcould provide even more firepower.

“We will not be looking for just one or two players todo the majority of the scoring this season,” Swartz said.“When you have that situation it can be easy for the de-fense to key-in on those players and take them out of thegame. But with the offensive unit we’ll have this season,as long as players step up, we will be able to spread theball around and get production throughout our frontline.”

Sophomore Allison Roush, junior Katie Dawkins, junior Heather Re, junior Kelly Kreamer, and sopho-more Rachel Houck provide the Spartans with a stronggroup of forwards who, along with the potential of sev-eral new recruits, could give York a quality offensiveoutput this year. Roush returns to the Spartan lineup asthe Green and White’s second top-returning scorer from2008. Her 11 assists was tops on the Spartan side lastyear as her ability to set up scoring chances makes her avery dangerous forward. Dawkins will look to be thebeneficiary of Roush’s passing prowess as she is poisedfor a banner year. A tough player who possesses qualityskill, Dawkins’ three goals and two assists in 2008should prove to be a solid launching pad for muchgreater numbers this season. Re comes back to thelineup following an injury that sidelined her all of lastseason. Now healthy, Re’s ability in the offensive third,as well as her hunger after missing the 2008 campaign, will give the Spartans an additional weapon in front ofthe cage. Kreamer, who has consistently improved overher two previous seasons, could breakthrough this yearand bring some added punch to the frontline whileHouck will look to capitalize on a strong off season andthe collegiate experience she gained in 2008.

The midfield poses a question mark for the second-year Spartan mentor, as York could prove slightly thinthrough the middle of the field. Junior Casey Lawrence, one of only four Spartans to start all 21 games last year, returns as the most experienced midfielder. A scoringthreat, Lawrenceposted 21 points onfour goals and sixassists in 2008while her scrappyplay can ignite theSpartan attack. Sheis a quick mid-fielder who willlook for more ac-tion in the middleof the field this sea-son. Becky Reevesis another third-year player on asquad fraught withjuniors. Reeves isan all-around solidplayer who shouldbecome more of aleader in 2009.

2009 Spartan Field Hockey previewA coachable athlete, Reeves will bring intelligent and simple play to the Spar-tan midfield. Sophomore Brittany Simmons came on strong in her rookie cam-paign providing glimpses of good things to come. That future potential couldcome to fruition in 2009 as Simmons has a great opportunity to solidify herselfin the Spartan lineup. She is a strong player who sees the field well, enablingher to anticipate and foil opponents’ attacks while her athleticism allows her topush forward for the Spartans.

Along with the three returners, Swartz also will look for several Spartannewcomers to step in and fill key roles in the midfield.

“We like where we are at in the midfield with our first-line players,” Swartzsaid. “Our concern however is depth. We are looking for some of our newplayers to make an immediate impact through the midfield whether coming offthe bench or winning a starting role. It will be interesting to see who steps up.”

The defense looks to be York’s strongest and deepest unit heading into theseason. Along with Eltz, the Spartans have three experienced and exception-ally talented defenders to start the year while the newcomers will bolster theunit. Senior Julie Reahl, junior Joan Shultis, and sophomore Colleen O’Rourkejoin Eltz to form a formidable back line that could prove very stingy. Reahlprovides the Green and White with a center back who has been through therigors of three collegiate seasons. Reahl was one of those four Spartans to havestarted all 21 games last season and has appeared in 62 of a possible 63 gamesover her strong career. She communicates well from the center, possesses theability to make tough tackles, and puts herself in the right places at the righttimes evidenced by her team-high eight defensive saves in 2008. Shultisplayed in all 21 games last year, including 20 starts, and has the opportunity toblossom into a top defender this season. Her continuity with her teammatesand comfort in York’s defensive scheme will allow her to more freely utilizeher ability to anticipate plays thwarting opposing attacks. O’Rourke posted astrong rookie campaign as she also started in 20 Spartan contests. She pos-sesses a great combination of strength and athleticism while her full season ofcollegiate experience should prove valuable this year.

“We are very happy with where we are defensively coming into camp,”Swartz said. “We have talent and experience throughout our backs which wewill look to capitalize on this year. Our ability to keep teams off the scoreboardwill be key to our overall success.”

Adding to York’s defensive potential are returning goalkeepers Rekitzkeand junior Maggie Schlauch. Rekitzke heads into camp as the Spartans’ #1while Schlauch will look to push the incumbent for time in the cage. Schlauchis a talented net minder who will benefit from a full off-season of develop-ment. While both are talented, Swartz expects them to consistently improvethroughout the season. York’s several newcomers could provide that addedspark and push both Rekitzke and Schlauch.

“There is no question that we have exceptional talent in our goalkeepingunit,” Swartz said. “As long as our goalkeepers stay focused and sharpthroughout the entire year, we could have one of the best units in the confer-ence.”

Entering her second season, Swartz believes the Spartans could have a greatseason given several key factors. The first of which is a renewed confidence.

“Our confidence will be much higher than where we were at the start of lastyear,” Swartz said. “The players know what we as a coaching staff expect ofthem, and they have seen, based on our 2008 successes, that we have the po-tential to be a very good squad.”

Along with increased confidence, the Spartans will look to improve theirperformance in road games as well as display the ability to play at a high levelin every contest.

“Bottom line we need to get better away from home,” Swartz said, com-menting on York’s struggles as the visiting team in 2008. “But besides that weneed to bring a focus and a swagger to every game. To believe that we canplay with any team and beat any team will be a huge key for us this season.”

The Spartans will begin the season, a year in which hope abounds, on September 4 as they open up at home against Alvernia with a 4:00 pm non-conference tilt.

“We will be ready,” Swartz said when asked about the upcoming season.“No doubt about that. We will be ready.”
