1. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is The Ultimate Goal?

The Ultimate Goal is a network of local and international churches, para-church organisations and ministries all working together on one common goal: To bring hope and change to South Africa. The Ultimate Goal’s vision is to mobilize and empower the body of Christ to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world through the platform of the 2010 soccer event. We want to train and mobilize at least 2000 churches in at least 600 of South Africa’s towns and cities to run some form of outreach during the event, and to reach at least 14 million people during that time. We do not provide churches/organisations with volunteers or programmes, we train the people from the church/organisation.The Ultimate Goal would like to leave a legacy behind of sustainable charity programmes addressing certain social issues that can continue even beyond 2010. This includes orphanage visits, prison visits, charitable fundraising, human trafficking, etc.

2. Who is The Ultimate Goal for?

The Ultimate Goal is for any church, organisation or individual. Even if you are not part of an organisation or church, as an individual you can volunteer your services and become a part of outreach activities in your area.

3. Who do I contact?

For any information you can contact the TUG Call Centre on 0861 2010 SA (72). There you will find assistance with everything, and the contact details you are looking for will be made available.

4. How can I get involved?

Firstly you can contact the Call Centre for any information you need to know, this will make is easier for you to identify your area of involvement within TUG.Then go to the website at www.theultimategoal.co.za and register. This will keep you in the loop, you will receive monthly News- and Prayer letters and have the freedom to browse the website and view all the download items, resources, programmes, events and much more.

5. Can I bring a team/group to do ministry even without a ministry contact in South Africa?

Yes, you can! The Ultimate Goal is a network made up of many different ministries, churches and organisations, which enable us to place you effectively with a local partner (ministry, church, organisation) according to your interest, skills and experience.

6. What are the costs involved for a mission team coming to South Africa for the World Cup™?

There are a few main areas that you need to consider with regards to the costs involved:A. Flights: Depending on where you are coming from, this will form the major part

of your costs. Flights during the Cup dates are very expensive and difficult to find, so it is worth considering booking flights before or after the tournament dates.

B. Transport: Many churches/ministries and service providers are making vehicles available. However, fuel and vehicle hire is a considerable expense to consider.

Page 3: 201… · Web viewCan I bring a team/group to do ministry even without a ministry contact in South Africa? Yes, you can! The Ultimate Goal is a network made up of many different ministries,

C. Accommodation & meals: Many churches are open to hosting mission teams and volunteers. Alternatively, there are many Christian campsites (with dorm rooms) and guest houses available that are very reasonably priced.

D. Optional activities: South Africa has MANY wonderful sights to see, so if you have time (and some extra money) it is well worth your while experiencing some of the incredible places God has blessed this country with.

Our service providers are able to help you with more detailed costs around a proposed trip, so please contact us for more information: [email protected]

7. We/I have never been on a mission trip to Africa. How do we/I go about putting together all the necessary arrangements?

The Ultimate Goal works with several service providers that have many years’ experience of hosting international mission teams. Their efficient staff on the ground will be able to help you to put together a suitable ministry schedule, as well as work through the necessary logistics (accommodation, transport etc.) surrounding your stay here.

8. How soon do we need to start making arrangements? If you haven’t started already, you need to start NOW! Arrangements during this exciting event are not only more expensive than usual, but also scarcely available, so the sooner you can start working on the necessary arrangements, the better!

9. What areas of ministry can we get involved in?There are a vast number of different areas in which a team can get involved in, including sports, arts (music/drama etc.), children’s ministry, social responsibility etc. Please see TUG website for further areas of ministry and how you can become involved.

10. How can my church as a congregation get involved?

What is going to be happening during the World Cup™ with regards to Creative Arts?Teams have been set up in 5 of the Host cities. These teams will be responsible for planning and implementing Christian Creative Arts Events and Outreaches, using a wide variety of creative arts (choirs, street carnivals, praise and worship events, fine arts exhibitions, open air performances, festivals, bands, drama, puppets etc.) to tell The Greatest Story that’s ever been told.

Where will the Christian creative arts outreaches take place? These events and outreaches will take place specifically where there is an Arts in Action! Team.

How do I or my church get involved in the Arts in Action! Christian creative artists volunteer your talents and perform and minister during the

Soccer event. Churches host performing groups who can assist with ministry within your church and

community. Creative Arts training available for your church or community Churches with creative arts teams have the opportunity to get involved with the

events already planned in their cities.

2. Guideline to select suitable Programmes and Projects for different target groups

How to use it: We recommend you select 1 or 2 which compliment and enhance the specific focus area of your church. In other words when your church’s focus is children and is in the rural areas you will find suitable programmes in the green area!

The number behind the Programmes, in brackets, is the number where you can look at an overview and contact details on the Programmes and Projects document.

2. CHURCH SERVICE THEMES Sport themed church services can be used effectively to impact the local congregation as well as providing the congregation with an excellent opportunity to invite non churched friends and other people to come to the service. The sport theme and/or witness by a local or national sport celebrity provide the church with an effective bridge into the lives of the members and non members as 85% of people relate to sport as either participants or spectators on a weekly bases. Sport celebrities also serve as powerful role models into the lives of others, thus people listen to their advice and witness.

A document is provided on the TUG website www.theultimategoal.co.za under Downloads, sub folder Service Outreach. This will serve to assist in the planning and practical implementation of such a service. You can also contact the Call Centre to fax or email a copy to you!

A five minute World Cup™ moment for every Sunday service is also provided on the website www.nous.org.za .This runs up to the Sunday after the final. This moment includes a suggested video clip to play, prayer guidelines as well as other information. It is currently only available in Afrikaans, but can be easily adapted and translated.

9. SERVICE OUTREACHTUG Service Outreach refers to practical activities where the Body of Christ can become involved in the vicinity of the stadium, official public viewing area or non-official public viewing areas during the soccer event in 2010 in South Africa. The purpose of these outreaches is to serve the visitors to South Africa as well as the South Africans.

9

Page 10: 201… · Web viewCan I bring a team/group to do ministry even without a ministry contact in South Africa? Yes, you can! The Ultimate Goal is a network made up of many different ministries,

In principle, Service Outreach also provides a platform from where other activities can be launched such as prayer initiatives and evangelism outreaches. As such, a Service Outreach should be linked to a Service Base Church (SBC) which offers its facility/resources to the Body of Christ.

Service Base ChurchThe Service Base Church (SBC) concept has been developed as a strategy to use church resources in Host Cities as bases for TUG outreach initiatives. The aim is to develop a national network of SBC’s in order to have a platform for the sharing of information in order to facilitate effective outreach through these strategically placed venues. SBC’s should develop their own programmes, but TUG is also requesting that these churches avail their facilities to the broader body of Christ.

The vision is to have at least one Service Base Church for each Playing Venue, and one for each official Public Viewing venue or Fan Zone. In a city where there is more than one SBC near a venue, we would seek to have leaders from those churches working together on a combined strategy (this is happened in Tshwane between Dutch Reformed and Baptist churches near Loftus for the Confederation Cup). The strategy must always be inclusive of churches and Christian ministries that wish to partner in this initiative.

The opportunities below also indicate how the JOINT EFFORT of various ministries and churches can be used effectively to advance the Kingdom of God. Regional TUG Teams should be seeking to facilitate these combined initiatives in their cities.

Here are a few examples of how the Body of Christ can become involved:

Opportunity: Who can become involved?

Prayer initiativeIt is recommended to organize prayer activities around the stadiums as well as in the fan mile areas before the start of the soccer event. It is recommended to start with this process as soon as possible. A few examples: monthly prayer walks, 24/7 prayer, etc. Please note that it is strongly recommended finding out if you need approval of any authorities in the specific area before you start with such activities.

This is an opportunity for people of all ages. It is however recommended that people should move in groups while praying – prayer walking. It is also an opportunity for families to get involved, for example, a group of families that will go and pray after a Sunday service.

Volunteers

Although FIFA will have allocated volunteers in these areas, there will not necessarily be enough volunteers available. Here are examples of types of volunteers who can assist in these areas:

Trauma counsellors – This is an opportunity to work with the South African Police. Although the Police do have counsellors available, there are not necessarily enough people available.

Translation services – individuals who can assist the police and the trauma counsellors with translations, languages such as French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, etc,

Volunteers that will be deployed around public viewing events or fan miles to assist with lost people, etc.

For different categories of Volunteers please see the TUG Volunteering document which also outlines the TUG volunteer

This is an opportunity for

o Adults, who are trained as trauma counsellors

o Adults who can speak foreign languages.

o Any adult who is willing to offer time during the event.

accreditation process.

Family friendly areasIt is expected that there will be families coming to watch the games. In most of the fan miles, alcohol will be freely available and it will not necessarily be an environment that children should be exposed to. This creates the opportunity to have secure family friendly areas close to stadiums or public viewing events where there will be no alcohol served with specific activities for children. The facilities made available by a Service Base Church may well be ideal to serve as a Family Friendly area. This could also double up as a TUG Viewing point for those who perhaps choose not to go to the City Public Viewings or FIFA Fan Fast (See How To Guide for TUG Viewing for more information).

This is an opportunity for families to become involved to:

o Look after childreno Provide facilities such as jumping

castleso Information regarding soccer events o Etc.

Evangelism activitiesThe principle of these activities is that there should be an activity that draws attention (create the opportunity) so that the Gospel can be shared. Opportunities can be created through:o Creative artso Sport activitieso Face paintingo Kids games etc.

When the opportunity is created, the Gospel can be shared through many ways such as:o The EvangeCubeo EE3o Etc.

This is an opportunity for teenagers and adults to become involved. Teenagers & adults can be involved in activities such as:

o Face paintingo Role playo Any creative art activityo Informal games that children and

adults can participate in

Hospitality

Opportunities abound to provide hospitality and share the love of Christ through meeting people’s needs. Some ideas are:o Providing food and drink for TUG volunteerso Distributing drinks free of charge to guests in the citieso Turning a Service Base Church into a coffee shopo Providing accommodation and meals to international

volunteers

This is an opportunity for churches to avail their facilities.

Church members can be encouraged to provide drinks/food for the initiative.

Families can open their homes to an international missionary guest.

Parking for outreach teams

Churches, organizations and businesses with closed parking that are allocated just outside the red zone, but close to fan miles and public viewing areas, have the opportunity to offer secure parking to the volunteers and members of the outreach teams.

This is an opportunity for businesses, churches and organizations close to fan miles and public viewing areas.

Financial support

It is suggested to identify an organization or organizations who are already working in the specific areas. All activities during the soccer event should also be focussed to strengthen them and to give them momentum for the period after the soccer event.

One of the advantages of such a partnership is that the existing support systems for example bank accounts can be used for fund raising.

This is an opportunity for: Businesses Churches Individuals Etc

T o financially support the activities of service outreaches during the soccer event.

13. TRAILER MINISTRY

TUG Service Provider: Eastside Community Church, Menlopark, Pretoria

The “Ignite the Flame 2010” trailer ministry is an exciting opportunity for churches to ignite the flame of evangelism across South Africa during the soccer event in 2010.The central idea behind this ministry model is for resource churches to form partnerships with under-resourced churches with the primary aim of reaching many people for Christ in 2010 and beyond.

Each trailer is a self contained ministry module, jam-packed with resources, tools and equipment. Such a trailer will enable a team to enter an area, care for themselves and minister to the local community without being a burden to the local church. As teams partner with under-resourced churches, the aim is that these churches would be inspired and encouraged to take hold of the ministry opportunities which present themselves and continue to impact their communities for Christ.

Quite a few International Teams from across the globe have already indicated that they would like to assist and serve the local churches in South Africa during the event. These groups are experienced in outreaches. Others are music and dance groups, football teams, creative artists, prayer warriors, etc. that you can utilize to give your own church or ministry programmes a bigger impact on your community.

If you are interested to work with a Christian Touring Team or would like to host such a team, please let us know.

19. UBABALO eAfrica

Ubabalo eAfrica is a Teen Games styled strategy that aims to transform African youth through Whole Life Coaching. Ubabalo eAfrica uses soccer as a microcosm of life to instill sound life values. This is the key to “paradigm shift” soccer coaching into whole life coaching. Every soccer skill is related to a value which is taught as part of the soccer training. This programme focuses on the untapped leadership potential of Africa and to change the behaviour of the youth in Africa so that the effect of HIV / AIDS, corruption, ethnic strife, family struggles and poverty will be minimized. We have a comprehensive curriculum that will facilitate coaches and players to develop a sound values system. Local church partnerships are at the centre of this programme. As the world is being treated to a spectacular festival of soccer in 2010, the dream is to see a continent experience a moral regeneration through a value-based whole life coaching programme and celebrate a renaissance of leadership – 1.3 million dynamic future leaders.
