Manager Notes
As October arrives so do some of our winter residents ~ Welcome Home”
We have had a long hot summer and hopefully our returning winter residents will bring some cooler temperatures with them! As our weather cools and we are able to be outside more to enjoy our Florida sunshine it is a good time
to take a look around your home and check for repairs and upkeep needed…don‟t forget to check your lamp post as well.
SOLICITORS
It is posted “No Solicitors” are allowed in the park. If a solicitor should approach you, please advise them that there is no soliciting
allowed. If they don‟t leave call the police.
As per our Rules and Regulations # 15 ~ Your dog or cat MUST be on a leash outside your home. This includes your yard or
driveway. I have been receiving numerous complaints about dog owners not having their animal on a leash when outside their home.
Please pet owners keep your dog on a leash at all times when not inside your home. Thank you.
The mowing of the “back 40” is scheduled for this month.
To the residents who have called, emailed or come by the office to clarify or confirm something that they were told by another resident. This
action really helps to keep down the rumors and gossip that might be considered „truthful and actual‟ (which sometimes is not the case) to a minimum. Thank you again. Note: A few of these emails and phone calls
have come from our winter or vacationing residents who wanted clarification or confirmation before they return so they do not repeat something that is
not truthful or actual. Renee` October 2010

Facts about October
Gemstone: opal and the tourmaline Flower: calendula
October is the tenth month of the year. October was the 8th month in the early
Roman calendar. October has had 31 days since the time of the Roman emperor
Augustus.
The first frost usually happens in October in the North Temperate Zone. Leaves
change to their brilliant colors, and begin to fall, making the ground a beautiful
haven of color. The farmers have to finish harvesting of the crops, but winter isn't
here yet. The cold won't stay. In fact, we will still have warm days ahead.
Most birds have left for the south by the first frost, but the sparrows love the
weather. They are seed eaters, and eat many weed seeds that would otherwise
damage the next field crops.
Farmers bring in the last of the fall crops and either store or ship them to other
parts of the world. In some parts, apples and grapes are still on the trees and
vines. Many apples are harvested at the end of October.
Football usually dominates the scene in October. Hockey also begins its season in
October. And, the World Series will steal some of the spotlight from other sports.
The Angel of October is Barbiel - October is the month of breathtaking beauty.
Nature dazzles our eyes with one last hurrah before retiring for the winter,
cloaking the trees in vivid hues of burgundy, gold, and orange. The trees' beautiful
colors were there all along, but were hidden by conformity of green. They shed
their green uniform to reveal their individual beauty, because the changing season
alters their daily dose of sunlight. Circumstances force them to change their
colors. The luckiest among us are like the trees ~ when change comes during the
seasons of life, they emerge in their own glorious coat-of-many-colors, woven from
the threads of both the good and the bad that is cast upon them. Barbiel is at your
side when change enters your life, and is ever-present to give the support you need
to weather the transformation.

Holidays in October
The first week of October is Fire Prevention Week in
the United States. Do you know what to do in case of a
fire? Make sure you change the battery in your smoke detector this month and
also make sure the fire extinguisher is functioning properly.
Columbus Day honors Christopher Columbus' first voyage to America in 1492.
Columbus Day became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1971. It is
celebrated on the second Monday in October. Before 1971, a number of states
celebrated Columbus Day on October 11th . Cities and organizations sponsor
parades and banquets on Columbus Day.
Thanksgiving – In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on
October 11th We want to wish all our Canadian friends and
residents a Happy Thanksgiving.
Halloween - It started almost 2000 years back, when the
Pagans used to celebrate the last day of the Celtic year to
honor the dead known as All Hallows’ Eve (October 31st ). It
is the evening before All Saints Day (November 1st), which
was created by Christians to convert pagans. It is an
important date on the Catholic calendar, a time to observe
and honor saints. As per the traditions, it is believed that the spirits of the dead
return to where they lived and the witches, demons as well as the evil spirits
become active.
A traditional food is eaten during this time known as “barnbrack”. It is a fruitcake
and is believed that while eating if someone finds a ring in the cake it means he or
she will get married soon or if they get a piece of straw good luck is on its way.

National Fire Prevention Month is also observed in October. A
representative of the Haines City Fire and Rescue will join us on
Wednesday morning, October 27th at 8:45 am. to help us learn the
ABC's of fire extinguishers. The program includes an informative
video presentation and discussion on the proper use of fire
extinguishers, PLUS an opportunity for each person to extinguish a
fire using the new Bulls Eye digital fire extinguisher hands-on training
system. This system utilizes realistic, self-generating digital flames
which respond directly to the trainee's actions. If
trainees fail to use the proper technique, the flames
respond accordingly – flames can diminish, grow
gradually or reignite. Please sign-up for this event so the Fire
Inspector can bring enough materials for all who participate! Enjoy your
coffee and doughnuts while learning something new.

Words to Live By
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family
for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become kinder to
myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't
chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for
buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde
on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they
understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM
and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the
60 &70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and
will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying
glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as
well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not
break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when
somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us
strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine
and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
12
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to
have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So
many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn
silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other
people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to
be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the
person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still
here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about
what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

Grandma’s Attic
I would like to have you start up "grandma's attic" again. This summer
I have had folks here at LHV who have had many needs. A lot of needs I couldn't
fill. We are all in the same boat and never know when we will need help, be it in
need of material things, actual help or just a "HUG". It never hurts anyone of us
to give a ride, stop at Wal-Mart and get something for someone, loan a shower
chair or give a word of encouragement.
We are in need of items that you are willing to loan. Any medical equipment,
walkers, showers chairs, wheelchairs, bedside commodes any devices that you may
have that you used in the home rehab setting.
We also could use any bedding items, aerobeds, cots, rollways, baby and toddler
stuff, playpens, highchairs, strollers and all kinds of "bouncy" stuff.
Once again, I will explain how "Grandma's Attic" works. Folks offer to lend
"stuff". I compile a list of available "stuff" with items, lenders name, address and
phone. When you need an item, YOU PERSONALLY CONTACT THE LENDING
PARTY to see if item is available. The list of items will appear in the Gator Tales
and will be located on the board in the clubhouse.
I really need your generosity to show through. My list is short and sometimes the
need is great.

Happy Senior
Halloween
You know you are too old
to Trick or Treat When:
10. You get winded from knocking on the door.
9. You have to have another kid chew the candy for you.
8. You ask for high fiber candy only.
7. When someone drops a candy bar in your bag, you lose your balance and
fall over.
6. People say: “Great Boris Karloff Mask,” and you’re not wearing a mask.
5. When the door opens you yell, “Trick or …” and can’t remember the rest
4. By the end of the night, you have a bag full of restraining orders.
3. You have to carefully choose a costume that won’t dislodge your hairpiece
2. You’re the only Power Ranger in the neighborhood with a walker.
And the number one reason Seniors should not go Trick or Treating
1. You keep having to go home to use the restroom.
Have a fun Halloween and hope to see you all out at
LHV clubhouse on Oct. 31st for the Halloween
Costume Pot Luck.
