AC Students cheer on the Bulldogs in a game last season

The first year as a collegiate head coach can be a learning ex-perience. Adrian College men’s basketball had not experienced a first-year head coach in a quarter century until last season when Mark White took over the program. The Adrian alum im-mediately brought respectability to the program as the Bulldogs compiled a 15-12 overall record and went 9-5 in the MIAA. Adri-an finished third in the rugged MIAA and after last year’s per-formance it is up to White to set even loftier goals entering his second campaign.

The core of this year’s team will feature seven returning let-ter winners. The team had nearly an even split amongst those who are back and those who are no longer with the team. The first challenge this year will be to mesh those newcomers with a group that already is comfortable with each other.

“I feel like we are in a better position than last year despite losing some guys in the offseason,” said White. “Everyone had to learn a new system a year ago and also learn how to play with each other. This year we have several guys who already know about the commitment level it takes to win. Our core of return-ers knows what it takes to succeed and the newcomers will be guided by them.”

The Bulldogs hung their hats on the defensive end under White in 2009-10. Adrian ranked first in the MIAA in scoring defense (62.2 ppg) and also ranked second in steals (8.14 spg). Coach White will continue to keep a solid defensive philosophy and preach the importance of taking care of the ball and limit-ing mistakes. Adrian ranked second in the MIAA in turnover mar-gin a year ago (+3.64) despite having a pair of freshmen point guards running the show.

The team this season will look to establish an identity on of-fense. Last season, Adrian ranked seventh in the MIAA in scoring offense (61.6 ppg) and were last in field goal percentage (.376). Coach White thinks that a year in the system will make a big dif-ference on the offensive end.

“After 27 games last year, I know what these guys’ strengths are and we will feature those talents in our offense. We know that our defense kept us in many games last year. However, we need to make strides on offense to compliment our defense. I know low-scoring games are not popular, but winning always will be.”

The Bulldogs return their top two scorers in senior Jovon Mos-ley (Detroit, Mich./Warren Lincoln) and sophomore Wesley Reed (Piqua, Ohio/Piqua). Mosley was a Second Team All-MIAA selec-tion in his first year with the program and will be looked upon for scoring and leadership this season as the lone senior on the squad.

“We are aware that Jovon needs to have a big year for us to be successful,” said White. “I don’t want all the responsibility on him though. We have other guys who will be vocal and lead us as well. Jovon is a talented guy with First Team All-Conference potential. He has a lot of experience and we will rely on him dur-ing crunch time.”

Mosley averaged 13.3 points per game in 2009-10 and shot 39.2 percent from the floor. He tied for the team lead with Reed with 43 three-pointers and they both shot identical 43-of-128 from behind the arc. Mosley was also good at the foul line mak-ing 80-of-100. Reed averaged 8.7 points per game and shot 38 percent from the floor. Reed made 30-of-38 at the charity stripe and committed just 11 turnovers in 479 minutes of action. Reed made just one start but has earned that starting role this season.

The other three starters will likely be sophomores Delano Col-

lins (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance), Dennis Mason (Ferndale, Mich./Academy of Oak Park) and Sean Gallant (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi). Collins was the prototypical unselfish point guard for Coach White as a freshman. Collins ranked fourth in the MIAA in assists per game (3.07), first in steals (1.64) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.95).

“Delano had a great season for us averaging nearly 25 minutes per game in a pressure position having the ball in your hands most of the time,” said White. “He needs to continue to make great decisions and also attack the basket when the time is right.”

Mason played in 24 games and averaged 17.8 minutes per contest as a freshman. Mason averaged 4.5 points and 4.6 re-bounds per game. He tied for second on the team in rebounding and led the team with 23 blocked shots. He is a good defender with a ton of athleticism. Gallant played in 20 games and made five starts a year ago. Mason has made the biggest improvement on the team with his all-around skill set.

Sophomore Cody Barnes (Romulus, Mich./Romulus) also re-turns to add depth in the backcourt. Barnes started 18 times during his rookie campaign and averaged 15.6 minutes per outing. Barnes needs to knock down more of his shots from the perimeter (21-of-72 from behind the arc) and continue to play lockdown defense.

The rest of the squad either saw limited time or are completely new to the varsity program. Sophomore Raymond Reed (Tren-ton, Mich./New Boston Huron) is a 6-11 center who saw action in seven games in 2009-10 as a freshman. Reed has worked on his game this offseason concentrating on his footwork and post-up moves. Junior Derek Clark (Detroit, Mich./CMA) is a transfer from West Virginia Tech and played in 29 games last season. Clark shot 36.5 percent from the floor and averaged 1.7 assists per game. Junior Josh McPherson (Detroit, Mich./CMA) is a transfer from San Diego Christian College and will log minutes at the forward spot.

Entering his first year as a college head coach, Mark White wanted to lay a foundation, instill values and raise the standards for the Adrian College men’s basketball program. White accomplished those things and more as he led the Bulldogs to one of their most

successful seasons in years.Adrian had a seven-win improvement in 2009-10 and placed third in

the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings in White’s debut season. The third-place showing was the best finish in MIAA play for the Bulldogs since the 1987-88 season.

That success led to White receiving a two-year contract extension through the 2011-12 season.

“I’m really happy with the opportunity to first of all coach here and very happy that the administration acknowledges our effort to lay the foundation of what we think will become a special program,” said White, who is a 1988 graduate of Adrian. “Our staff and team worked really hard to change the culture of the basketball program and to bring in talented student-athletes to regenerate enthusiasm for basketball at Adrian College.”

Adrian College Athletic Director Mike Duffy has been impressed with the job White has done with the basketball program and felt an extension was necessary.

“We’re not naive, this guy is good,” Duffy said. “He’s a type of coach that could move on and be a coach at a Division II school or a lead assistant or even a coach at a Division I school. We want to hold on to someone like that. He’s an alum and has got Adrian Bulldog blood. He’s done a great job molding the team. I understand they were young, but he did a lot in one year and those kids really improved and are only going to get better. I only see the program getting stronger. He sets his goals high and wants to win a championship and more than 15 games.”

“He’s very deserving, especially for him coming in his first year and bringing in all new players and doing what he did,” said Adrian senior Jovon Mosley, who was one of the 11 newcomers and led the team in scoring in 2009-10 en route to earning Second Team All-MIAA honors. “He was very successful. A lot of coaches aren’t very successful in their first year, especially with a whole new team.”

Adrian finished 15-12 overall (9-5 MIAA) in 2009-10 with one of its biggest wins coming when it knocked off NCAA tournament participant Hope at the Merillat Center in late February. The nine wins in league play were the most since the 1978-79 season.

The Bulldogs finished the season by winning seven of their final 10 games. White was hired in May 2009 as Adrian’s coach and replaced longtime coach Buck Riley. He meshed a group of 11 newcomers to help the Bulldogs put together a strong season. Adrian was the youngest team in the MIAA and exceeded preseason expectations.

White is a 1988 graduate of Adrian College and was inducted into the College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He currently ranks fifth on the career charts in scoring with 1,454 points and is also the current holder of the all-time assists record.

White comes back to Adrian College after a very successful career as a prep coach in his hometown of Detroit, Mich. He compiled a record of 201-42 during his time as head coach at Renaissance High School and Southeastern High School. He coached two Michigan Class B High School State Championship teams at Renaissance in 2004 and 2006 and advanced to the state semifinals four out of five seasons from 2002 to 2006.

“Mark White is a well organized coach,” says University of Michigan men’s basketball coach John Beilein. “He is a great teacher of the fundamentals of the game. His energy and enthusiasm is contagious. I sense he has been a driving force in many players’ lives on and off the court. His accomplishments at Renaissance and Southeastern are a testament of his ability to produce championship contenders each

year. He will be a great fit at his alma mater.”“Mark White is a great hire for Adrian College,” said Michigan State

University men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo. “He’s won numerous championships in his career, but even more importantly, he wins the right way. He’s not going to be outworked and he spends time with his players, establishing very important relationships. I’ve recruited his players for several years, and academically and socially, they are always prepared for the next step in life. I have no doubt that he’ll be successful at Adrian.”

ADRIANCOLLEGEAdrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, 21 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.
