Intercollegiate athletic participation is an integral part of the educational mission of the University and ath-letic competition is offered to enhance the total development of the student.
Through the Intercollegiate Athletic Program, the University endeavors to provide student-athletes with proper direction and motivation to help them grow academically, athletically, morally and socially.

PenelopeWardKylebecameRadfordUniversity’ssixth,andfirstfemale,presidentwhenshetookofficeonJune1,2005.ShecametoRUwithmorethan30yearsofexperienceinstategovernment,thecorporateandlegalworlds,andhighereducation.
Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle immediately focused on leading the university’s initiative to becomeoneofthetop50mastersuniversitiesinthenation.
TheRadfordUniversitystrategicplan“7-17”,completedin2007atherdirection,identifiesfourstrategicdirec-tives--theinvestmentinpeople,programs,globalandlocalsocietyandthefutureofRadfordUniversity.
UnderPresidentKyle’sleadership,theuniversityalsoaddeditsfirstdoctoralprogramwithanemphasisinrural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college student enrollment by offering additional doctoralandmasterslevelprograms.Shehiredtheuniversity’sfirstprovostandcreatedtwonewvicepresiden-tialareasofresponsibility,InformationTechnologyandUniversityRelations.
The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovationwithinthegoverningbody.
AnativeofsouthwestVirginia,PresidentKyleisaproductoftheGalaxpublicschoolssystem.Shegraduatedfrom Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies in English at Southern MethodistUniversityinDallas,Texas.ShereceivedherJurisDoctoratefromtheUniversityofVirginiaSchoolofLawandlaterearnedherMBAfromtheCollegeofWilliamandMary.
PresidentKyleservedasExecutiveDirectoroftheVirginiaLotteryfor11years,underthreesuccessivegovernors.FirstappointedbyGovernorGeorgeAllenin1994,shewasreappointedbyGovernorJamesGilmore,andthenreappointedonceagainbyGovernorMarkWarner.Previously,Ms.KylewasemployedbyCSXCor-poration,aninternationaltransportationcompany,whereshebecamethecompany’sfirstfemaleofficer.BeforejoiningCSXCorporation,shewasanattorneywithMcGuire,Woods,LLPinRichmond.ShealsotaughtEnglish

RADFORD ATHLETICSThe Radford University athletic program offers 19 varsity sports, eight for men and 11 for
women:men’sandwomen’sbasketball,crosscountry,golf,soccer,tennis,indoorandout-door track, along with field hockey, swimming, softball and volleyball for women, and base-ballformen.
The Dedmon Center and the outdoor athletic facilities, which surround the multi-purpose building are the award-winning focal point of a program that has grown rapidly the last threedecades.
The athletic program has grown dramatically since 1974-75, when men’s sports were first offeredonavarsitylevel.Growthoftheprogramhasbeenrapid,butnotrandom.Eachstephasbeencarefullycontrolled,withnewsportsbeingaddedonlytomeetexistingdemandsandonlyafterassurancesforaqualityoperationcouldbemet.Theresultisawell-balancedandhighlysuccessfulprogram.RadfordcurrentlycompetesintheBigSouthConference.Achartermemberoftheyoung
league, Radford has won 39 League titles in 10 different sports and has advanced to NCAApostseasonplayinsevensports.Highlanderathleticsoffersstrongsupportforitsstudent-athletes.Fromacademicadvis-
ing to compliance services, Radford gives its student-athletes the support needed to be successfulintheclassroom.Radford’sathletictrainingandstrengthandconditioningpro-gramsallowthestudent-athletestocompeteattheirbestpossiblelevel.

Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Lineburg has helped usher in a neweraofHighlanderathletics,markedbyunprecedentedon-andoff-fieldimprovementsandsuccesses.
In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel andstrategicplanning.
HismostvisibleinfluencetodatehasbeenontheDedmonCenter,where Lineburg has been involved with major renovations to the center-pieceofRadfordathleticsformorethan25years.Beginninginthespringof 2008, the facility underwent transformations to the arena, including a newsteel-supportedroof,anewbasketballfloor,renovatedathleticof-fices,anew-looknatatorium,andimprovedathleticlocker,training,andmedicalfacilities.
Along with the initial transformations to the Dedmon Center, an im-proved state-of-the-art strength and conditioning room, new ticketofficeandLearningEn-hancementCenter(LEC),whichhouses student-athlete aca-demic support, were completed/addedin2009.
In 2010, facility upgrades included a new high-tech videoboard / sound system to the Dedmon Center as well as a new playing surface / irrigation system and dugouts to the Rad-fordUniversityBaseballField.
Lineburg has also overseen thehiresoffivenewheadcoaches,aswellassixnewathleticadministrators.Hishiresinclude women’s basketball head coach Taj Njongba, head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, women’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler, head men’s soccer coach Marc Reeves and the pro-motionoftrackandfieldinterimdirector Brent Chumbley to head

As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09:women’ssoccer,men’sbasketball,men’stennisandsoftballclaimedBigSouthconferencecrownsandadvancedtoNCAATournamentplay.Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament title to advance to the NCAAsforthefirsttimesince1998,men’stennismadeitsthird-straightappearance,andsoftballappearedforthefirsttimeandwonRadford’sfirst-everNCAAtournamentgameinanysport.
Lineburg and the Highlanders backed their success in 2008-09 with a men’stennisandsoftballBigSouthregularseasontitlein2009-10.MickeyDean’s softball team went on to win their second straight conference tour-namentcrownbeforeadvancingtotheAthens,GeorgiaRegionalfinalwithtwomoreNCAATournamentvictories.
Heandhisstaffhavealsobeenresponsibleforcreatingafive-yearstrategic plan for the Radford athletic department and building an athletics facilitiesmasterplan.AdditionalachievementsincludeusheringinanewathleticsInternetsite(RadfordAthletics.com),andhelpingimplementanewticketsystem(TicketReturn).Lineburgandhisstaffhavealsohostedtop-levelcompetition,withfiveBigSouthchampionshipstakingplaceon

theRadfordcampusfrom2008-10..In addition to making an impact on Radford athletics, Lineburg is also
involvedinanumberofdifferentorganizationsandcommittees.Heisthe chairman of the Big South Conference on Basketball Improvement, a member of the Big South ad-hoc Committee on Basketball Issues, and a member of the selection committee to select Radford University’s Vice PresidentforAdvancement.
Prior to becoming Radford’s third Director of Athletics, Lineburg’s corpo-rate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton Real EstatePartnersinDallas,Texas.
Alongwithhisbusinessexperience,Lineburgspent15seasonsasacollege basketball coach, including time as Southern Methodist’s interim headcoach.PriortoservingastheMustangsinterimheadcoach,LineburgspenteightyearsasanassistantatSMU.Followinghisinterimtenure,heservedtwomoreseasonsasanassistantcoachatSouthernMethodist.
Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison University and Emo-ry & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team.HiscoachingexperiencealsotookhimthroughtheBigSouth,ashespenttimeonthesidelineatUNCGreensboro.
A 1991 graduate of Roanoke College, Lineburg started his collegiate basketball career as a Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman beforetransferringtonearbyRoanokeCollegetoplayhisfinaltwoyears.
HeearnedhisBachelor’sinpoliticalsciencewithaminorinhistory.In 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in education from Virginia Tech, wherehewasalsoagraduateassistantonthemen’sbasketballstaff.
Lineburg is the son of retired Radford High School football coach and athleticdirectorNormanLineburgandthebrotherofDr.MarkLineburg,theSuperintendent of Bristol City Schools, Paul Lineburg, the Assistant Princi-palatWilliamByrdH.S.andWayneLineburg,whoisinhisfirstseasonastheoffensivecoordinatorattheUniversityofRichmond.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT SERVICESThemissionoftheStudent-AthleteSupportServices(SASS)officeforRadfordUniversityAthleticsistopromote,assist,andprovidecounseltoallstudent-athletes.Itsprimary,constantgoalistode-velopgraduatesandoutstandingcitizenswhohavecontributedintheareasofathleticcompetitionduringtheirtenuresofeducation.
Located in the Dedmon Athletic Center, the newly established Learning Enhancement Center is equippedwithcomputers,tutorialrooms,andastudylounge.
The Learning Enhancement Center provides direction for student-athletes via academic counseling inconjunctionwithadvisorsfromtherespectivecollegesatRadfordUniversity.Academicsupportservices such as tutoring and supervised study hall are provided, as well as career planning, moni-toringofeligibilitystatus,andahostofotherguidanceandadvisoryservices.

DRAPER VALLEY GOLF CLUBLocated in Pulaski County, Draper Valley Golf Club is the home course of the Radford Universitymen’sgolfteam.
Deeply rooted in Virginia’s history, Draper Valley is truly an oasis for the serious golfer and has been highly rated by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazineinpastyears.
Alongside a pro shop, driving range, putting green practice area and snack bar, the sce-nic,par-72coursefeaturesfourpar3’s,tenpar4’sandfourpar-5’s.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONINGA component that is vital to the Radford athletic program is the strength and conditioning program directed by Strength and Condi-tioningCoachMichaelShumaker.
HighlanderAthleticshavelongbeenrecognizedasoneoftheleadersamongMid-Atlanticschoolsinitsconditioningandstrengthtraining.It has been an instrumental part in the success of Radford University sportsthroughtheyears.UnderthedirectionofShumakerandas-sistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Kim Faulkner, the program is designed to help each student-athlete reach his or her full potential in theirrespectivesport.
Each Radford University student-athlete has strength and conditioning programsuniquetotheirgoalsasaplayer.Thisprogram,developedby Shumaker, helps prepare RADFORD student-athletes for the long andrigorousin-seasonschedule.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured intoacompetitiveleaderincollegeathletics,activelypursuingexcellenceonthefieldofplayandintheclassroom.TheLeague’sgrowingpresenceas an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accom-plishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partner-ships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadershipdevelopmentofeachstudent-athlete.ThishasevolvedintotheConference’smissionof“DevelopingLeadersThroughAthletics.”
The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when CharlestonSouthern(thenBaptistCollege)AthleticDirectorHowardBagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, CharlestonSouthern,Campbell,CoastalCarolinaandWinthrop.Onemonthlater,Dr.EdwardM.SingletonwasselectedastheLeague’sfirstCommissionerandcontinuedtosolicitnewmembers.Hiseffortsledtothe additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the BigSouthmorethantherequiredsixmemberstoconstituteanofficialconference.TheBigSouth’sfirstyearofcompetitionwasintheFallof1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledgedNCAADivisionIstatus.
During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’sbasketballandwomen’sgolf.In1989,GeorgeF.“Buddy”SasserreplacedtheretiringDr.SingletonasCommissioner,andin1990,theLeaguereceiveditsfirstautomaticbid–receivinganautomaticqualifiertotheNCAABaseballChampionship.UnderSasser’ssevenyearsofleadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compli-anceprograms,andintroduceditsfirst-evermen’sbasketballtelevisionpackage,featuringtheBigSouthcompetingamongsomeofthefinestteamsinthenation.
InAugust1996,KyleB.KallanderreplacedSasserasthethirdCom-missioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has beeninstrumentalinaggressivelypromotingtheConferencetonewlevels.The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’sbasketball,baseballandsoftballforthefirsttimeinConferencehistory,aswellasincreasednationaltelevisionexposuretotheLeagueasawholethroughaggressiveanduniquetelevisionpackages.
Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initi-ateditsfirstlong-rangestrategicplan,re-affirmingtheLeague’svisionasa distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional lifethroughathleticcompetition.Healsospearheadedtheeffortstoaddfootball as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and hassolidifiedConferencemembershipwiththeadditionsofHighPoint,Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter memberCampbellUniversity.Kallander’slongrangevisionhasalsoincluded technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its firstliveeventvideostreamingin2005andhassinceexpandeditsvideoofferings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social mediaplatforms.
Inthelast15years,theBigSouthhasexperiencedmonumentalgrowthandsuccessinnearlyeverysport.Duringthistime,theCon-
ference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track&field,andmen’sgolf,hadanindividualselectedtoplayintheNCAASinglesChampionshipfourtimesinadditiontothefirstmen’stennisdoublesat-largeselection,hadtheNo.1rankedmen’sgolferinthe country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivisionin2006,andhadaninstitutionfinishfifthintheNCAAMen’sGolfChampionships–thehighest-everteamfinishinanNCAAevent.
The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anni-versary.TheLeaguealsohonoreditsheritagewiththeTop25“BestoftheBest” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crownedtheNo.1momentintheBigSouth’sfirst25years.TheConfer-ence’son-fieldaccomplishmentshavebeenduplicatedintheclassroom.Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named totheBigSouth’sPresidentialHonorRollformaintainingacumulative3.0grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americansinitsquarter-centuryofexistence.

Mike Grant, the 2008 Big South Coach of the Year, is in his eighth sea-sonatthehelmoftheHighlanders. Prior to the 2008-09 campaign, Grant directed both the men’s and women’sgolfprograms.Thisseasonmarksthethirdyearhewillcoachjustthemen’steam. In2003,Granttookoveramen’sprogramthathadn’tfinishedhigherthanfifthintheBigSouthChampionshipsincejoiningtheleaguein1984-85.Sincethen,Granthasdirectedhisteamtoaprogrambestthird-placefinishin2008,fourthin2007andthreefifth-placeshowings.Alongsidetheimpressive turnaround, Grant’s group recorded two sub-900 team scores, thefirstinteamhistory,in2007and2008. In 2007-08, his Highlanders placed a school-best third at the confer-encetournament,earningGranthisfirstCoachoftheYearhonor. In2009-10,Grantledthemen’sclubtothreetop-fivefinishes,includingaseason-bestsecond-placeshowingattheFrankLandreyInvitational.Togoalongwiththeirfinishesnearthetopoftheleaderboard,theHighland-ersalsotalliedsixtop-10showingsayearago. During that season, Grant directed senior Kyle Bailey, who recorded theseventh-highestscoringaverage(74.37)intheBigSouthandWestonEklund,whotallieda75.33average,was20thintheleague. Along with his coaching accolade, Nick Little and Hampton Ballard were selected to the Big South All-Conference squad, marking just the second time in school history two members of the men’s golf team had received
leaguerecognitionthesameseason. During the 2010 fall campaign, Grant’s teamfinishedamongtheTop-10inallfivetournaments entered, with a season-best fourth-placefinishcomingattheRichmondIntercollegiate,870(+6).Hehasalsoover-seenafifth-placeshowingattheinauguralOld Dominion/Outer Banks Intercollegiate whenhisteamfiredaone-over865. Under Grant’s instruction, Eklund has become one of the top men’s golfers in the conference.HecollectedaBigSouthMen’sGolferoftheWeekawardandfinishedinthe Top-10 three times in the fall, including a career-bestrunner-upfinishattheDavidsonInvitational. Grant has overseen numerous program firsts,includingthefirsttournamentwinforthewomen’sprogramandthefirsttimethemen’s team had held the overnight lead at theBigSouthChampionship.
During his tenure, Grant has coached seven Big South All-Conference players and guided his student-athletes to a pair of individual medalist honors.TheRadfordmen’steamhasimproveditsfinishintheBigSouthChampionshipinfourofhissixyearsatthehelm,whilecapturingmultipleregularseasontournamenttitles. Along with his club’s successes on the golf course, Grant’s programs haveexcelledintheclassroomasJoshMeador,LauraTerebey,DanaDoganes and Maggie Watts have been named to the league’s All-Academ-icsquadduringhistenure.TerebeyandDoganeswerebothselectedRad-ford’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Terebey also garnered Academic All-American honors in 2004 and was awarded the Big South’s Christen-berry Award, the most prestigous academic award the League bestows on anindividual. A1991graduateofVirginiaCommonwealthUniversitywithaB.S.De-gree in Community and Public Affairs, Grant competed professionally on thePGATour,CanadianTourandNikeTourfrom1995-1998. The Highlight of his playing career came in 1994, when he competed in theU.S.OpenatOakmontCountryClub. Inthesummerof2005,GrantmadeanotherqualifyingrunattheU.S.Open, getting as far as Sectionals before falling just shy of making the field. Before assuming his position as the head coach at Radford, Grant was a teaching professional at Thorn Spring Golf Club in the New River Valley, apositionheheldforayear.Healsospentthreeandahalfyears(1998-2001)astheAssistantGolfProfessionalatBoonsboroCountryClubinLynchburg,Va.
Prior to turning in pro in 1995, Grant served as the Assistant Profes-sionalatFlossmoorCountryClubinChicago,Ill.andastheAssistantGolfCoachatVCU. GrantandhiswifeTararesideinRadford.Thecouplehasthreekids,Jake(13),Haley(11)andThomas(3).
