Designed by world-renowned golf architect Tom Fazio, the $2.4 million Warren-Greene Golf Center sits on 14 acres of land overlooking the ETSU campus. Named in honor of longtime ETSU men's golf coach Fred Warren and ETSU golf supporter William B. Greene, Jr., the Warren-Greene Golf Center includes six target greens, two bent-grass greens (one for putting and one for short-game work), three tee areas, a fairway bunker and four greenside bunkers. The accompanying 3,300-square-foot, two-story building, designed by Ken Ross Architects of Johnson City, Tenn., contains coaches' offices, meeting rooms, the Hal Morrison Hall of Fame room, players' lounge, two indoor hitting bays, and an observation deck. Without a doubt, the Warren-Greene Golf Center provides ETSU players with one of the best on-campus practice facilities in college golf.

SheltonHead CoachNinth Season

Success breeds success as the East Tennessee State women’s golf team continues its ascent among the elite women’s golf programs in the nation. During her previous eight years at ETSU, head coach Stefanie Shelton has progressively taken the Lady Bucs to levels of success never before seen in the history of the ETSU women’s golf program.

Overall, Shelton’s teams have won nine tournament titles in her eight seasons at ETSU and have finished in the Top 10 in 62 of 70 events, including 49 Top 5 showings. A year ago, Shelton also guided her players to individual success, as a total of four players earned all-conference honors.

Last season, the Buccaneers collected the program’s highest-ever national ranking at the end of the year (45th) and enjoyed an at-large bid to the NCAA regionals. ETSU won one team title a year ago at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, and junior Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) became the first ETSU woman to ever participate in the NCAA Championships as an individual, earning her spot in that tournament by finishing tied for fourth in the NCAA East Regional, where she fired a three-round score of 3-under 213 which included a 2010 national record for low round with an 8-under 64 in the first round.

In 2008-09, the Buccaneers finished the year ranked 47th nationally by Golfstat.com, the highest such national ranking in program history at that time. In addition, the year also included two more team championships for the squad, as ETSU captured titles in the Sea Trail Women’s Invitational and UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational. Those successes came on the heels of a historic 2007-08 season in which the Bucs captured their first conference championship ever and made the team’s first trip to NCAA postseason play. In winning the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference team championship, the squad also captured its first-ever conference individual championship, as sophomore Laura Jansone took home that honor. The league title was ETSU’s second team championship of that year, as the squad also won the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational trophy as well.

Indeed, the record books have been rewritten in recent years, as Shelton has helped several Lady Bucs reach personal bests both in stroke average and individual round play, plus the team has set new program records in every team category. In addition, she has coached eight first-team all-conference selections, nine second-team all-conference selections, and two freshman-of-the-year recipients in 2004-05 and 2006-07. In fact, for her efforts during the 2004-05 season, Shelton was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, and she earned the same honor in both 2006-07 and 2007-08 from the Atlantic Sun Conference.

In addition to the continued success on the golf course, the team has excelled in the classroom, maintaining a 3.57 cumulative GPA in 2008-09, and placing it in the top 25 in the country.

Shelton came to ETSU from Texas Christian University where she was the assistant women’s golf coach during the 2001-02 season. While with the Horned Frogs, she assisted with all aspects

of the team, including coaching, recruiting, practice organization and conducting the first Horned Frog golf camp.

A 2001 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a double major in entrepreneurial management and marketing, Shelton was a three-year member of the women’s golf team at South Carolina where she was an Academic All-American, as well as making the SEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll every year. Before playing at South Carolina, Shelton played for a year at Wake Forest University, redshirting her freshman year. An exceptional student, Shelton made the dean’s list in each of her seasons at South Carolina, graduating cum laude in her majors. Shelton minored in Sports Administration. She has begun work toward a master’s degree in Sports Psychology at ETSU.

Shelton was also involved with helping manage a golf school, the Hartefeld National Golf School, working with that program for four years. There she assisted PGA professionals with instruction of adults, collegians and juniors. Shelton was a member of the National Golf Coaches Association Strategic Development Committee, as well as a charter member and “Education Chair” of the Tri-Cities Executive Women’s Golf Association. She also served as a columnist for Golf Journeys magazine.

In addition to her academic and athletic exploits, Shelton also has a long history of community service. At ETSU, Shelton has stressed community involvement and has directed her players to help in several “giving back” activities, such as participating in Special Olympics, Communities in Schools, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Second Harvest Food Bank, Families First, Appalachian Christian Village and Woodridge Hospital. She was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Athletes Care Team while at Wake Forest. At South Carolina, she participated in Team Gamecock Habitat for Humanity Harvest Hope and was a big sister for a third grader in 1999. As a player, Shelton was the youngest Delaware Amateur Champion at age 16, held many titles as a junior golfer traveling throughout the nation, and set two course records. She was a co-captain her senior year at South Carolina and was ranked second in the nation in “short game.” She competed in Regional Championships every year and competed with her team for a National Championship title three times.

Shelton and her husband David reside in Fall Branch, Tenn. They have one child, a son named Dalton Ryan.

IngramVolunteer CoachFirst season

Rachel Ingram, a native of Johnson City, has joined the ETSU women’s golf program for the 2010-2011 season.

As a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi in May 2010, Ingram received four varsity letters as a member of the women’s golf team. Ingram’s college career low was 71 at the Derby Intercollegiate (Auburn University) in 2008. This personal best in the final round helped the Lady Rebels get their third straight top five finish. Her best individual finish was 228 to place 14th at the Chrysler ACC/ SEC Challenge (Florida State University) in 2005.

As an individual, she has earned top 25 finishes in summer amateur tournaments which include the following: Women’s Southern Amateur ’06; Women’s Western Amateur ’06; Golf Capital of TN Women’s Open ’09; and TN State Amateur ’10. Ingram has also played in team events representing the state of Tennessee. She competed in the USGA State Team Championship in ‘09, as well as the Southeastern Women’s Amateur (SWATCA) in ’09 and ’10. She recently played in the LPGA Futures’ Tour Qualifying school.

Ingram graduated from ETSU’s University School located on the ETSU campus in 2005. She received the US Career Athlete award for having the lowest stroke average on the boys’ team. She was the A-AA Regional Player of the Year from 2001-04 after winning the regional title each year and received All-State honors in 2001-02 before coming in fifth and fourth in the state tournament respectively. She was the Tri-Cities PGA Champion from 2002-05 and led the girls’ team to The Ridges Girls’ Invitational title in 2005.

Ingram earned a Marketing Communications degree with a focus in Public Relations. Outside of golf and earning her degree, she interned with two marketing departments in the Oxford, Miss., area. She interned with Rebel Sports Marketing and the Marketing Relations department at the Baptist Memorial Hospital- North Mississippi.

Rachel Coggins

Assistant CoachFirst Season

A native Texan, Kristi Coggins comes to ETSU after a highly successful 23-year career coaching at the University of South Carolina from 1994 until her retirement in 2008, and prior to that at Texas Christian University from 1985 to 1994.

Coggins directed the Gamecocks to 10 trips to the post-season as a team, highlighted by eight NCAA Championship appearances and an SEC title in 2002. For her efforts, Coggins was honored as the 2002 SEC Coach of the Year. In addition to the team’s success during the Coggins era, three of her players have qualified for the NCAA Championships as individuals.

With a cumulative grade point average of 3.752 for the 2004-05 academic year, Coggins’ team was recognized as the inaugural recipient of the National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar Team G.P.A. Award. They won that same honor the next two years to complete a three-peat.

Coggins has coached 17 individuals over the years who have gone on to professional golfing careers, including Kris Tschetter, Ellie Gibson, Siew Ai Lim, Clarissa Childs, 2004 Dinah Shore Trophy winner Adrienne Gautreaux and 2003 SEC Player of the Year Kristy McPherson.

In total, she has tutored seven All-Americans and 11 different individuals who have garnered 20 All-SEC and All-Southwest Conference honors. Twice named Coach of the Year in the Southeastern Conference and the Southwest Conference, Coggins’ 2002 team won the SEC championship, while current LPGA and Solheim Cup member Kristy McPherson won back-to-back individual titles in 2001 and 2002.

Coming to South Carolina following nine highly successful seasons at Texas Christian, Coggins took over a program which had finished in the lower division of the Southwest Conference in 1985, and proceeded to guide the Lady Frogs to nine consecutive upper-division finishes in the SWC. Coggins led TCU to three runner-up finishes in the Southwest Conference Championships (1988, 1989, 1993), with the squad finishing third or better in all but one season.

Coggins led TCU to five NCAA appearances, with three of her squads advancing to the NCAA finals. Her 1989 team ranked as high as third in the nation at midseason, earning Coggins Southwest Conference Coach of the Year honors. All of Coggins’ TCU squads finished the season ranked 26th or better in the nation.

After a 2009-10 season that resulted in the program’s highest national ranking and an at-large bid to the NCAA regionals, the ETSU women’s golf team will begin its quest for another trip to the NCAA postseason this spring.

With the departure of graduated seniors and longtime contributors such as Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia), Sinead O’Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) and Kennie Leigh Eisenhower (Newport), head coach Stefanie Shelton will be relying on a different cast of characters this year – including four new faces on a six-player roster.

“Each of the girls on this team has experience winning at certain levels, whether on the amateur scene or in college golf,” Shelton said. “We expect to win here at ETSU this year – and achieve new levels of success, such as taking the entire team to Nationals. It is a new batch of talent, but a great mix that can reach even higher goals.”

Despite the new faces, there is talent coming back to Johnson City. Senior Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) returns after a strong finish a year ago, when she qualified for the NCAA Championships as an individual after finishing fourth at the NCAA regionals. Muehl, whose program record 8-under-par 64 in the first round of the regionals made national headlines, will be joined by highly skilled

and talented junior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) as the team’s only two returning players.

As for the newcomers to the squad, they include junior college transfers Pearl Asaka Sim (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Lauren Smith (Cramlington, England), along with true freshmen Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) and Sian Evans (Gillingham, England).

In the fall, Evans was the most impressive player on the team. She led the squad with a 74.5 stroke average and posted three Top 20 finishes, including a third-place showing at the Lady Paladin Invitational – which she led at the conclusion of the second round.

“With four new ladies on the team this year, I look to Nina and Mayte for leadership,” Shelton said. “They have been a part of our most successful teams, and can use that experience and those expectations to lead us even farther.”

The Bucs will play a spring schedule which includes five tournaments prior to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, which will be played April 11-13 in DeLand, Fla.
