Scouting Green BayGreen Bay (13-1, 2-0) was ranked No. 21 nation-ally in last week’s poll and has won three games since. UWGB’s only loss of the year came at Marquette, 63-60, on Dec. 12. Green Bay beat three Big Ten teams in its non-conference schedule and opened league play with home wins over Detroit (69-62) and Wright State (75-57). The Phoenix is forcing 25 turnovers per game and leads the conference in scoring of-fense (72. ppg) and scoring defense (52.4 ppg). Julie Wojta is one of four players averaging at least 11 points, and Kayla Tetschlag is the Hori-zon League’s Preseason Player of the Year.

Last Game: L, 61-74 at UICUIC scored the fi nal 20 points of the fi rst half to offset a school-record-tying seven 3-point-ers from Kenya Middlebrooks in a 74-61 victory over YSU on Sunday. YSU led 27-21 with 5:38 remaining before the Flames scored the fi nal 20 points of the half and the fi rst three of the second period. Shameia Green had 14 of her 32 points during the 23-point spurt. YSU was able cut the margin to nine twice in the second half after trailing by as many as 20. Middlebrooks fi nished with a career-high 22 points, going 7-for-10 from 3-point range. Brandi Brown fi nished with her second straight double-double, posting 17 points and 15 rebounds. UIC shot 50 percent for the contest while YSU shot 35.7 percent.

Quick Notes from UIC• YSU led 27-21 with 5:34 remaining in the fi rst period after going on a 12-3 run. UIC scored the next 23 points to take a 44-27 advantage.• Kenya Middlebrooks scored a career-high 22 points and tied the school record with seven 3-pointers.• Brandi Brown posted her sixth double-double of the year and her third in the last four games.• Monica Touvelle played a career-high 24 min-utes.• YSU made at least 10 3-pointers for the third time this year. The last time the Guins had 10-or-more treys three times in a season was 2004-05. • The Penguins were outscored 30-16 in the paint, including 18-2 in the fi rst half.

Last Time vs. Green BayGreen Bay made its fi rst eight shots and never looked back as it defeated YSU 84-45 on March 4, 2010 to clinch at least a share of its 12th straight conference championship. Green Bay took a 14-0 lead when Heather Golden hit a 3-pointer with 16:48 remaining. The Penguins kept things within arms reach and trailed 23-11 with 11:12 left but went without an-other fi eld goal for more than nine minutes. The Phoenix led 42-13 by the time YSU made another basket and went up 50-15 at halftime.

Green Bay outscored YSU just 34-30 in the second half as the Penguins shot 53.3 percent in the period. Green Bay shot 54 percent overall and 42.4 percent in the second half as substi-tutes played most of the fi nal 15 minutes.

Why 2-11 is Still EncouragingAlthough Youngstown State would like to have more than two wins at this juncture, it’s hard to ignore the improvements that the Penguins have made from last year’s 0-30 season.• Most notably, YSU has shrunk the scoring margin from 25.8 points per game last year to 13.5 this year.• The Penguins are averaging 6.6 more points and allowing 5.8 fewer points.• Opponents are shooting 5.3 percent worse from the fl oor.• The Penguins lost by at least 20 seven times in their fi rst 13 games last year. They’ve done that just three times this year.• YSU is committing 2.2 fewer turnovers and forcing 2.7 more per contest.• YSU led Western Michigan by 24 and Winthrop by 14 in the second half in losses.

What Happened in the 20-0 Run?Without question, the turning point of Sun-day’s game at UIC was the 20-0 run that the Flames went on to close the fi rst half. Prior to the run, YSU led 27-21 and had just completed a 12-3 bulge. UIC called a 30-second timeout to regroup and proceeded to make nine straight shots – six lay-ups, two 3-pointers and a jumper. In the meantime, during YSU’s nine posses-sions during the run, the Penguins missed fi ve 3-pointers and a jumper and committed four turnovers. UIC also scored the fi rst three points of the second half to extend the run to 23-0.

A win would...• Snap YSU’s eight-game losing streak.• Give YSU its third win this season, equal-ling the win total of the past two seasons combined.• Improve YSU to 3-2 at home• Give Bob Boldon his fi rst league victory• Be YSU’s fi rst against a ranked team since beating No. 23 Green Bay on Feb. 13, 2005

PENGUINS BASKETBALL PAGE 3 GAME 14: VS. GREEN BAY

Need to Stop Scoring DroughtsYoungstown State went scoreless for 6:28 at UIC on Sunday as the Flames turned the game with a 23-0 run. The Penguins have had scoring droughts lasting at least 3-½ minutes in each of their fi rst 13 games, and they’ve gone scoreless for more than 5:20 six times. The longest drought lasted 11:35 in the fi rst half at Kent State as the Golden Flashes scored 25 straight points.

Field Goal Dry SpellsYSU has been particularly been doomed by lengthy dry spells from the fi eld this year. The Guins have gone without a fi eld goal for more than four minutes in every contest, and they’ve faced droughts of more than 6:25 in eight games. In those eight contests, YSU was either in the lead or within three points at the start of the fi eld goal drought. The Guins ended up los-ing each of those games. YSU was tied at Pitt, up seven at Kent State, down three at American, up one against Akron, up 13 against Winthrop, up one at Loyola and up six at UIC.

Penguins Happy to Be HomeYoungstown State has played just one home game since it won back-to-back contests on Nov. 24 and Nov. 27. Since then, the Guins have played seven out of eight games on the road. YSU has been a much better team at home than on the road. The Guins shoot 6.5 percent better at Beeghly Center than on the road and average 9.9 more points. The most notable dif-ference is second-half scoring. YSU is averag-ing 38.8 points in the second half at home and 24 on the road.

Scoring Margin Improvement is Horizon League’s, Ohio’s BestYoungstown State has improved its scoring margin by 12.3 points from last season to this season, which is by far the best improvement in the Horizon League. YSU was outscored by 25.8 points per game last season, and that num-ber has dropped substantially to 13.5 points this year. Next in line is Wright State with a 6.2-point improvement. YSU also has the best improve-ment among Division I schools in Ohio. Kent State is second at 9.4 points.

Success in First Years of DecadesIf historical trends hold true, YSU has a lot to look forward to in 2011. The program has en-joyed success in years ending in “1”. In 1981, 1991 and 2001, the Penguins have a combined record of 50-27. YSU was 17-7 in 1981, 24-4 in 1991 and 9-16 in 2001.

Respectable vs. Green Bay at HomeYoungstown State has played relatively well against Green Bay at Beeghly Center in each of the past two seasons. Last year, YSU held a 28-22 lead against the 18th-ranked Phoenix be-fore Green Bay’s 16-0 run helped it to a 76-60 win. The Penguins shot 50 percent – their best mark in almost four years – against Green Bay. Two years ago, YSU trailed just 36-35 before Green Bay scored 12 straight points as part of a 16-2 run.

Guins Succeeding AcademicallyThe women’s basketball program at YSU en-joyed another strong semester in the class-room. As a team, the Penguins recorded a 3.24 grade-point average. Nine of the 13 players on

the roster had at least a 3.0 GPA this past fall, and eight student-athletes have a cumulative GPA off at least 3.0. Bojana Dimitrov and Kaitlin Rohrs both posted a 4.0 GPA during the fall.

Turning the Page to League SlateSince joining the Horizon League in the 2001-02 season, YSU has had four head coaches – Ed DiGregorio, Tisha Hill, Cindy Martin and Bob Boldon. The Penguins have fi nished with eight conference wins twice – in 2001-02 and 2007-08. YSU has lost 38 of its last 39 Horizon League games.

Brown Looks to Build on Notable First Year in League GamesBrandi Brown will try to build on a solid start to her career in the Horizon League. Last year, Brown had 11 double-doubles in 18 regular-sea-son league games. She averaged 12.3 points and 11.3 boards in league games last year en route to being named to the all-newcomer team. In her fi rst two league games this year, Brown is averaging 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Getting Familiar With WinningNo player on Youngstown State’s current roster had ever won back-to-back games as a Penguin prior YSU’s consecutive wins over Bucknell and Ohio. Only Makala Gasparek, Kenya Middle-brooks and Macey Nortey had experienced a victory wearing Red and White prior to beating Bucknell. The trio had three wins in 63 games. They experienced wins twice in four days.

Up NextYSU remains home to play Milwaukee on Satur-day at 1:05 p.m.

Bob Boldon Head CoachFirst Season at Youngstown State

Northeast Ohio native and expe-rienced assistant Bob Boldon is in his fi rst season as the head women’s

basketball coach at Youngstown State.

Prior to his arrival in Youngstown, Boldon spent three successful seasons as a colle-giate head coach and 10 years as a college assistant. Five of those 10 years have been at the Division I level. He spent last season as the top assistant coach at Division I Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. YSU is his fi rst Division I head coach-ing position.

In his most recent head coaching stint, Boldon orchestrated the best season in school history in 2008-09 at NAIA Lambuth University. He led the Eagles to school bests with 29 wins, a fi nal No. 3 national ranking and an .853 winning percentage. Lambuth was the runner-up for the national title, and Boldon was recognized as the Association of Independent Institutions Coach of the Year.

At the University of Arkansas at Monti-cello, Boldon helped lead a major improve-ment for the Division II Cotton Blossoms. He inherited a team that went 1-15 in conference play the year prior to his arrival, and he im-mediately brought them up to an 8-8 mark, which was the school’s best conference record in fi ve years.

Boldon has served on the bench with two national coaches of the year and a confer-ence coach of the year. He has spent four seasons with Karl Smesko, including last year at FGCU, and fi ve with Jodi Kest, the head coach at Akron. He also spent a year with Jerry Scheve.

Boldon, a 34-year-old native of Louisville, Ohio, graduated from Walsh in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. As a student-athlete, he was a two-time All-America selection as a point guard and helped lead the Cavaliers to the semifi nals of the NAIA Tournament. A four-year starter, he remains the school record holder in assists (775) while also ranking fourth in scoring with 1,694 points.

Boldon and his wife, Diana, have three sons - Tyler and twins Luke and Zach.
