baby album 2011Financial 'baby steps' for expecting, new parents
(ARA) — While today'seconomy continues to putextra stress on mostAmericans' wallets, thosepreparing to welcome a newchild into the family experi-ence the added pressure of awhole new set of expenses. From diapers to baby furni-
ture and day care, costs fornew parents mount quickly. For some, the reality of theseexpenses is daunting. Othersare completely unaware ofhow a new child will impacttheir financial situation.
So, just how much does ababy cost? The answerdepends on many factors. Doesone parent stay at home or
does the family hire a childcare provider? Will the childattend public or privateschool? Is there a need for alarger home or car for thegrowing clan? Raising a childcosts an average of nearly$11,000 the first year and morethan $220,000 for the first 18years, according to the U.S.Department of Agriculture.
So where do expecting andnew parents start? ThriventFinancial for Lutherans offersthese five "baby steps" to helpthem prepare.
1. Start early. During yourpregnancy, take the time todetermine your family's imme-diate financial needs as well as
your long-term goals. 2. Create a realistic budget.
Determine the true cost ofwhat you will need and weighit against the new realities ofyour household income situa-tion. This is particularlyimportant if you plan on leav-ing the workforce for anextended period of time.Consult another new parentfor a list of monthly babyexpenses to get a clear pictureof those costs.
3. Start and/or increase anemergency fund. The chancesof unexpected expenses willbecome much greater once thelittle one comes on the scene.
4. Get protection through
proper insurance. It's time toface your own mortality andvulnerability. Protection is crit-ical. Consult with a financialrepresentative to insure yourhealth, property, income andlife through appropriate insur-ance. In addition, consider ajuvenile life insurance policywhen your child is born. Also,be sure to update the benefici-ary designation on your ownpolicies once the baby is born.
"For new parents, one of thebiggest financial priorities wehear about is their desire toprotect their family's financialfuture," says Bruce Fear, vicepresident of protection prod-ucts and solutions for Thrivent
Financial. "The foundation ofthis protection starts with hav-ing the proper insurance inplace in case of an unexpectedevent. This can provide somepeace of mind to many par-ents."
5. Save for college. Beforeyou know it your child willleave the nest, so start savingfor junior's college experiencenow. A financial professionalcan assist with the variousinvestment tools availabletoday for college savings.Furthermore, opening a sav-ings account in the child'sname is a great starting pointfor depositing monetary giftsgiven to the child.

baby album 2011No-fuss tips to make feeding baby easy, enjoyable
(ARA) — Feeding a newborn, it'sbeen said, is a collaborative effortbetween an adult and a baby, neither ofwhom have much education or experi-ence in the matter.
Even if you already have childrenyou may find feeding a new baby achallenge, depending on how differenther personality is from her older sib-lings. Some babies will take to breast-feeding happily and turn their littlenoses up at the hint of a bottle. Otherswill struggle with nursing and findgreater success and satisfaction with abottle. And many babies will prefer acombination of nursing and bottle-feed-ing.
All three methods have their advan-tages and challenges. Breast-feedingoffers nutritional and developmental
benefits to a baby, and cost savings forparents. Bottle-feeding can be easy forboth mother and baby, and gives otherfamily members the chance to help outwith feeding and experience bondingwith the baby.
Here are a few tips to make feedingeasier, whether you nurse or bottle-feed: ä Choose a quiet place for feeding
your baby. This will make mealtimemuch more enjoyable. As the babygrows, this will also help her focus onfeeding versus being distracted bywhat's happening around her. ä Use a feeding pillow to make feed-
ing time easier for mom and baby. Itputs mom in the correct ergonomicposition, relieving back and neckstrain. It also supports baby as babies
always need to have their heads sup-ported properly when eating. ä Snuggle. Feeding is the perfect time
to bond, so enjoy. Infants love skin-to-skin contact. Nursing mothers get thisnaturally. Parents using a bottle cansnuggle baby close to their face andwear short sleeves to maximize skincontact. ä Let baby decide when she is full.
Nursing moms are often concernedabout their baby getting enough to eat.In general, if baby is back up to birthweight within two weeks, she's gettingwhat she needs.ä Burp baby. Babies often swallow
too much air and need help to get itout. If baby is fussy or not interested infeeding, sometimes she just needs to beburped.
ä If using formula, make sure tomeasure. Follow the directions on thelabel, which is key to maintainingnutritional balance. Put the recom-mended amount of water in a cleanbottle and then add the formula. Thiswill help make measuring more accu-rate too. If you put the formula in thebottle first, you will end up adding lesswater than recommended. ä Learn what the experts recommend
for storage times on both breast milkand formula. Times can vary dependingon storage methods. ä Let Dad help. Dad and baby will
bond over feedings and Mom will get afew much-needed minutes of rest. ä Reach out to the experts, such as
doctors and lactation consultants, if youneed assistance. They are there to help.
