Parks and Recreation is full of hometown fun, complete with your favorite recreational pastimes. Many of our parks, programs and special eventshave been around for years. Some date as far back as the 1930’s. They are the things that perhaps you enjoyed as a child, like summer playgroundprograms, special seasonal events, swimming in the neighborhood pool, playing baseball on a hot summer’s day, or the annual All Kids’ Carnival.

Parks & Recreation Department

An archive of old Parks and Recreation news articlesfrom 1938 revealed that summer playground pro-grams were extremely popular in that era. Therewere kite contests, doll shows, talent shows, and petparades. Our summer playground programs todaymay differ from those of yesteryear, but are still aspopular as ever. What hasn’t changed is a kid’s desirefor wholesome, interactive fun during summer vaca-tion and a chance to meet new friends.

Hometown pastimes are meant to be savored. Goahead. Run barefoot in the park. Swing on the neigh-borhood swings. Step up to the plate and hit one out ofthe park. We’re still proud to have these and othergreat programs become the “Best of My Hometown”.Be glad that some things never change.

Community DevelopmentBringing Back the City’s NamesakeIn October 2009, the City re-dedicated the High Bridge Glens Park on SouthFront Street. The new urban park bears the same name as one that opened 130years ago in the same location. A beautiful new overlook bridge, gorge levelwalkway and gazebo complement our National Heritage River.

Planning For Our Future2009 marked an unprecedented event – hundreds of folks attended the demo-lition of the former State Road Shopping Center. This 25-acre parcel will beredeveloped into a state-of-the-art, walkable neighborhood center that willreturn retail vitality to the Portage Trail corridor.

Water Utilities DivisionReliable delivery of top quality water to homes and busi-nesses is the number one priority of our Water UtilitiesDivision staff. In addition, conservation and water effi-ciency programs continue to support local education andoutreach projects which translate into effective waterresource stewardship.

Classroom programs and professional teacher workshopsare implemented annually to further facilitate the very bestacademic opportunities for Cuyahoga Falls public andprivate school teachers and students. In addition, RiverDay and Public Lands Day community and Cuyahoga Rivercleanups continue to draw increasing levels of participa-

tion by citizens of all ages every year.

Fire Hydrant FlushingThe process of “flushing” fire hydrants is animportant maintenance operation that removessediment from water lines and keeps ourwater distribution system refreshed. Hydrantflushing also ensures that hydrants are func-tioning properly and repaired as needed.

As a result of the hydrant flushing procedure, residents in the immediate area of the programmight experience temporary discoloration oftheir water primarily due to harmless silt andprecipitates. If water discoloration is experienced following fire hydrant flushing in your neighborhood, sim-ply run the water faucets in the home for a minute or two to clear pipes completely.

For specific information on the Water Utilities Division services and community water quality programs, please call 330-971-8130 or visit the City Web site at www.cityofcf.com.

CFES staff continues to demonstrate a proud heritage of skill and service through ongoing safetytraining and development programs. Smart Grid training and education along with reliable, efficienttechnologies will benefit Cuyahoga Falls via current and future infrastructure improvements.

The Cuyahoga Falls Street Division works side-by-side with many organi-zations and municipal departments throughout the year. In addition tomaintaining more than 230 centerline miles of community streets andabout 160 miles of sidewalks, Street Division staff expertly implementsmany critical municipal programs and services including road and curbrepairs, street lining and snow plowing, as well as fall leaf pickup.

In addition, the Street Division Signshop regularly collaborates withschools, community organizations and other municipal departments inthe design and production of effective, and often quite artistic, signage fora variety of community needs and seasonal events. The Street Division alsoensures that crossing guards have ample salt for seasonal application at

school crossings and immediate sidewalk areas. Schoolparking lots and accesses are paved through a joint effortbetween the schools and the Cuyahoga Falls Street Division.

Special projects have also become a major factor in theStreet Division’s wide range of collaborativeefforts. The development of warning anddetour signs for construction projects, thedesign of decals which identify City vehicles, and the skilled assistance provided in publicconstruction, development and necessarydemolition projects are just a few of the StreetDivision efforts which require effective col-laboration with a variety of entities.
