Bob Spoo, the dean ofcoaches in the Ohio ValleyConferencereturnsforhis23rdseasononthePantherssidelineslookingtoguidethePantherstotheir 14th NCAA FCS playoffappearance. SpoocurrentlyranksfourthamongDivisionIcoacheswiththelongesttenureatoneschooltrailing Penn State’s BobbyBowden, Albany’s Bob FordandVillanova’sAndyTalleyonthatlist.

LastseasonEIUclimbedbacktothetopoftheOVCstandingsasthePantherscapturedtheirfifthconferencecrownsince2001.Spoo was named the OVC Coach of theYear and one of fivefinalistsfortheLibertyMutualNationalCoachoftheYearasEIUfinishedtheyearat8-4overall.ThePanthersadvancedtothetheirseventh playoff appearance since 2000 ending the year ranked15thintheFCSCoachespoll. After missing the 2006 season for medical reasons, Spooreturnedtotheteaminafull-timecapacityfollowingthePanthers2006firstroundplayoffloss.In2007thatrecognizeddriveand“voice” returned in full force as Spoo guided EIU to its thirdstraightFCSplayoffappearanceand12thoverall. EIUwould finish the 2007 season with an 8-4 record, 7-1intheOVC.ThePantherswererankedNo.15inthefinalFCSCoaches poll making their sixth playoff appearance in the lasteightseasons. ThewinningestcoachinEasternIllinoishistoryandtheactiveleaderinwinsamongOVCcoaches,Spoomaintainsacareermarkof140-113-1.HehasledthePanthersto11winningseasonsinthelast15years. UnderhisleadershipthePanthersqualifiedforanunprecedentedthreestraighttripstotheNCAAI-AAplayoffsbetween2000-02andagain from2005-07. EIUhaswon(orshared)OhioValleyConferencechampionshipinfiveofthepastnineseasons.Inhis23yearsatEIUthePanthershavemadetentripstotheNCAAplayoffswith11finishesintheTop25poll.EIU’sdeepestrunintheplayoffsunderSpoocamein1989whenthePanthersknockedoffIdahointhefirstroundbeforelosingthequarterfinalsatMontana. DuringhistenureatEIU,thePanthershaveproducednumerousAll-ConferencepicksincludingsevenOffensiveorDefensiveOVCPlayersoftheYearsincethe2000season.EIUhasalsohadanumber

ofAll-Americanplayersbothon thefieldand in theclassroom.Spooalsocoached2002WalterPaytonAwardwinnerTonyRomo,nowaProBowlquarterbackwiththeDallasCowboys. Overhis23yearsontheEIUsidelines,SpoohasbeennamedtheOVCCoachoftheYearthreetimes(2001,2005,2009),GatewayConferenceCoachoftheYearonce(1995)andtheRegionCoachoftheYeartwotimes(1995and2001).In2000hewastherunner-upfortheEddieRobinsonCoachoftheYearAward.In1995hewasnamedthe Football Gazette I-AACoachoftheYear. Demanding excellence on the field and in the classroom,Spoobelievesthatthefoundationforconstructingachampionshipprogram lies with a strong defense and sound kicking game,revolvingaroundaball-controlpassingattack. Spoo and his staff have been commended publicly by theFacultySenatefortheiremphasisonacademics.TheDaily Eastern News,thecampusdailynewspaper,namedSpooastheir“PersonoftheYear”inhissecondyearinCharleston. A threeyearPurdue letterman,SpooreplacedNFLHall-of-FamerLenDawsonasthestartingquarterbackin1957andguidedtheBoilermakerstoatwo-yearrecordof11-5.Heco-captainedthe1958BlueteamintheBlue-GrayAll-Stargame. Spoolaterreturnedtohisalmamatertocoachquarterbacksinthe1980’s,buildinghisresumebycoachingsuchnationallyknownpassersasMarkHermann,ScottCampbellandJimEverett.AllthreewouldgoontoplayintheNationalFootballLeague.DuringhistimeatPurdue(1978-1986)theteammadefourbowlappearances.SpooalsospentseveralyearsatWisconsin(1973-77)asthequarterbackscoach. Priortobecomingamainstayinthecollegecoachingranks,SpoowasoneofthemostsuccessfulprepcoachesinIllinois.HewastheheadcoachatLoyolaAcademyinWilmettefrom1967-72directingtheschooltoa51-9-2recordandthe1969Chicagocitychampionship. WinningtheturnoverbattleissomethingthatEasternIllinoisdefensivecoordinatorRocBellantonihaspreachedsincehejoinedthe Panthers staff. In 2006 that mantra was proven correct asthePanthersledthenationinturnoversgainedwith31.In2009EasternIllinoisforced26turnoverstorank19thinthenationasEIUhasrankedinthetop25nationallyinturnoversgainedinfourofBellantoni’seightseasonsasdefensivecoordinator. Bellantoni joined the Panthers defensive staff in 2001 andwas promoted to his current role of coordinator following the2002springpracticeseason. Inspringof2009hewaselevatedtoassociateheadcoachfordefenseaftertwoseasonsasassistantheadcoach. In his career he has coached three OhioValley ConferenceDefendersoftheYearinlcudingback-to-backwinnersClintSellersin2005andDonaldThomasin2006.In2007ThomasfinishedasafinalistfortheBuckBuchananAwardhandedouttothenation’stop FCS defensive player. Bellantoni also coached Nick Rickstobeingnamedatwo-timefinalistfortheBuchananAwardafterwinningOVCDefenderoftheYearhonorsin2002.In2008hecoached Pierre Walters who was a midseason BuchananAwardcandidatewho laterplayed in theTexasvs.TheNationAll-StargamebeforeearningarosterspotwiththeKansasCityChiefs. In 2005 Bellantoni’s defense ranked 19th in the country inscoringdefenseallowingjust19.2pointspergame.ThePanthersrankedfirstintheOVCinrushingdefenseandsecondnationallyinturnovermarginwith+1.5pergame.ThePanthersscoredanunprecedentedeightdefensivetouchdowns. PriortocomingtoEIU,BellantoniwasthedefensivecoordinatoratDrakeUniversitywhichsharedthePioneerLeaguetitlein2000witha7-4record.Drake’sdefenseforced26turnoversandhad36quarterbacksacksthatseason.HealsocoacheddefensivelineatDrake in1998and1999with theBulldogswinning the1998conferencetitle. Bellantoni startedhiscoachingcareeratMamoroneckHighSchool High School in New York in 1993 and made his firstcollegiate coaching stop at Buena Vista University in Iowa in1995. A 1993 graduate of Iona College, Bellantoni earned threevarsitylettersplayingdefensetacklefortheGaels.HestatedhisplayingcareeratMassachusettsasamemberofthe1998YankeeConferencechampionshipteam. Bellantoni currently serves as the Panthers recruitingcontactforsouthFlorida.Healsoservesastheliaisonwithcampusfoodservicesandhousingandisthesummercampdirector. Bellantoni and his wife Jenny have four sons, Gino,MarcoandtwinsNicolasandRicky.

roY WIttKEAssociateHeadCoach-OffensiveCoordinatorQuarterbacksCoach(WisconsinEau-Claire,1982)-16thSeason

Former Eastern Illinois offensive coordinator RoyWittkerejoinedthePanthersfootballprogramonMay1,2008inapositionhepreviouslyservedinfrom1990-2002.Wittkewaselevatedtohiscurrentpositionofassociateheadcoachforoffenseinthespringof2009. In 2009 EIU featured a more balanced offensive attack asquarterback Jake Christensen and running back MonWilliamswerebothsecondteamAll-OVCselections.ThePanthersscored19touchdownsthroughtheairandanother11ontheground. In2008thePanthersoffenseproduceda1,000rusherforthefifthstraightseasonasTravorusBessclimbedintothecareerTop15onthePantherscharts. WittkecomesbacktoEIUfollowinghismostrecentstintatNorthernIllinoisduringthe2007seasonwhereheservedas theoffensivecoordinatorandquarterbackscoach. Wittke is best known for helping to develop current DallasCowboys signal caller Tony Romo as the Panthers offensivecoordinatorfrom1990-2002.DuringthattimeframeEIUposted82wins,madefiveFCSplayoffappearancesandwascappedoffbyRomoearningthe2002WalterPaytonAward.HewasnamedtheAFCADivisionI-AAAssistantCoachoftheYearin2002asthePanthersoffensiveunitrankedfourthinthenationinscoring(35.3ppg)andfifthintotaloffense(452.6yards/game). During his first stop at EIU, Wittke coached 14 playerswho earned offensive All-American honors and numerous All-Conference selections in both the Ohio Valley Conference andGateway Football Conference. Three of his offensive unitsrankamongthetopfiveatEIUfortotaloffenseandscoringinaseason. Following the2002 season,Wittkeworkedas theoffensivecoordinatorattheUniversityofArkansasfrom2003-05andoneseason at both Arizona State University (2006) and NorthernIllinois University (2007). Wittke coached in both the 2003Independence Bowl withArkansas and the 2006 Hawai’i BowlwithArizonaState. He has also had stints at his alma mater Wisconsin Eau-Claire(1979-81),MontanaStateUniversity(1982-84)andCentralMissouriState(1985-89). Wittke is a native of Racine,Wis., and a 1982 graduate ofWisconsinEau-Claire.HeandhiswifePattyhavethreechildren:sonsBradandJeffanddaughterBekah.

MIKE lYnchWideReceiversCoachRecruitingCoordinator(Montana,1999)-6thyear

MikeLynchhasservedastheEasternIllinoiswidereceiverscoachthelastfouryearsafterworkingasanoffensiveassistantcoachin2005.HehasalsoservedasthePanthersrecruitingcoordinatorforthepastthreeyears. In2009Lynchhelpedcoachoneoftheyoungestwidereceivinggroups in thenationas threestarterswereunderclassmen. Thatunitresponded by hauling in 19 touchdown passes with 184 receptionsfor2,288yards. Itwasabalancedattackwhere the top receiverhadonly32catcheswitheightdifferent receiversaccounting forPanthertouchdowns. In 2007, EIU wide receivers hauled in 218 passes for 2,300yards includinganotherbigyearbyseniorMicahRuckerwhohad9touchdownsand777yardsreceiving. During the 2006 season Lynch helped coach Micah Rucker asthe junior receiver earned second teamAll-American honors for thePantherswith13touchdownsand966yardsreceiving. PriortojoiningtheEIUstaff,LynchmadeanameforhimselfasamemberoftheUtahStatecoachingstafffrom2000-04.WhilewiththeAggies,LynchhelpedcoachthreetightendsthatwouldsignwithNFLteams. ChrisCooleywas a third round selectionof theWashingtonRedskinsinthe2003draftwhileJ.R.SuguturagaandCaseyPoppingabothsignedfreeagentcontracts. ARoseville,Californianative,LynchplayedtwoseasonsatSierraJunior College in California before playing two seasons at center attheUniversity ofMontana. His 1997 and 1998Grizzly teamswon16gamesmakingtwostraightNCAAI-AAplayoffappearances.Hewouldserveasarestrictedearningscoachin1999ontheUMstaff. LynchearnedhisbachelorsdegreefromMontanaandamastersinsecondaryeducationfromUtahState.

brIan callahanOffensiveLine(EasternIllinois,1992)-1styear

Former Eastern Illinois offensive lineman Brian Callahan hasreturnedtohisalmamaterjoiningthePantherscoachingstaffinMarch2010astheoffensivelinecoach.ThismarksCallahan’ssecondstintonheadcoachBobSpoo’sstaffashewasarestrictedearningscoachin1993workingwiththetightendsandoffensiveline. CallahancametoEIUfollowingsixseasonsastheoffensivelinecoach atAkron where he also served five seasons as the run gamecoordinator.HisoffensivelineunithelpedpavethewayforAll-Mid-American Conference selections at running back in four of his sixseasons including a record breaking season by running back DennisKennedy. DuringhistenureatAkron,CallahancoachedChrisKemmeafirst-teamAll-MACselectionin2008whileguardAndyAllemanwasathirdroundselectionintheNFLDraftbytheNewOrleansSaints.Duringthe2008seasonhisoffensivelinecapturedauniquehonorastheentiregroupwascitedastheMACOffensivePlayeroftheWeekfollowingtheZipswinoverToledo.Thegroupshowedmarkedimprovementastheyranked45thinrushing,46thinpassingand40thintotaloffenseafterranking90thandbelowinallthreecategoriesthepreviousyear. HisfirstseasononthejobinAkronCallahanhelpedmoldagroupthatreplacedfourstartersintoacapableoffensiveunit.Theteamallowedjust21quarterbacksacksallseasonasquarterbackLukeGetsypassed

for3,455yards,thesecondhighesttotalinschoolhistory.Thelinealsohelpedproducea1,230-yardrushingseasonbyBrettBiggswhoearnedAll-MAChonors. PriortojoiningtheArkonstaff,CallahanworkedatUTEPwherehecoachedtheoffensivelineforthreeseasons(2001-03)andtightendsforoneyear(2000).DuringthattimeUTEPwontheWesternAthleticConferenceChampionshipin2000playingintheHumanitarianBowl.HecoachedAll-AmericantightendBrianNatkinin2000andhelpedTreyDarilekearnfirstteamAll-WAChonorsin2003. BobbyBabichentershisfourthseasonasthePanthersdefensivesecondarycoachafterjoiningthestaffinmid-Julyof2007. In his first season in Charleston, Babich helped coach a youngsecondarythathadlostfourstartersfromanOVCChampionshipteamin2006.ThegrouprespondedwithRashadHaynesandKe’AndreSamsbothearningsecondteamAll-OVChonors.ThesecondaryaccountedfortenofthePanthers12interceptionsand32passbreak-ups. In2008BabichcoachedamoreveterangroupthatinterceptednineofthePanthers12interceptionsontheseasonwith19passbreak-upsandoneinterceptionreturnedforatouchdown. Helping to develop a shut down corner in Rashad Haynes andveteransafetygroup,Babich’sgrouponceagainwas instrumental inhelping EIU rank in the top twenty nationally in turnovers gained.CJ James earned first team All-OVC honors while Haynes was asecond team selection as the two combined to score three defensivetouchdowns.Thedefensivebackfieldaccountedfor9interceptionsand27passbreak-ups. In2009SmileycoachedpunterKevinCookandkickerAustinSignorasSignorearnedfirstteamAll-OVChonorsafterleadingthe nation in kick offs for touchback. Signor also ranked 30thnationallyinfieldgoals.Cookfinishedtheseasonranked9thinthenation inpunting. Special teamsplayerLorenceRicksalsoearnedNationalSpecialTeamsPlayeroftheWeekdistinctionin2009duringthePantherswinoverJacksonvilleState. Smiley came to Eastern Illinois following two seasons atEureka College where he served one season as the offensivecoordinatorandoneseasonasthedefensivecoordinator.InOctoberof2008hewasnamedinterimheadcoachandprecededtowinhisfirstcontestwitha47-19winoverPrincipiaCollege. outlooK Eastern Illinois is coming off an 8-4 season in which thePantherswontheOhioValleyConferenceregular-seasontitle toadvance to their 13th FCS playoff appearance. EIU ended theseason rankedNo.15 in theFCSCoachespoll followingafirstroundplayofflossatNo.1SouthernIllinois. ThePanthersshouldonceagainbeoneoftheteamsinthehuntfortheOVCregular-seasoncrown.EIUhaswonfourOVCtitlessince2000andmadesevenplayoffappearancesinthelasttenseasons.
