2010 CONFERENCE AND CAREER FAIR 11
WELCOME
On behalf of Equal Justice Works and our partners, welcome to the Equal Justice Works 2010 Conference and Career Fair. We are so glad you are here!
This annual event began in 1988 with less than 500 students attending from just 45 schools. Today, it is the largest national public interest law career fair in the country, attracting more than 1,200 students from our 197 member law schools. The Conference and Career Fair provides access to job opportunities for law students; connects employers with talented attorneys and law students; and offers leadership and development workshops, along with unparalleled opportunities to network with colleagues from around the country.
We appreciate that the work for justice is bigger than this Conference and Career Fair, and it is growing rapidly as more and more students come to law school with a commitment to public service. Moreover, social media is creating unprecedented opportunities for students to connect with people who share their passions to bring justice to under-served communities and causes.
Our conference theme this year is Public Interest 2.0. In modern nomenclature, the term “2.0” is about community, technology and collaboration. Throughout the conference, we are focusing on the creative ways that technology can be used to help build a stronger, more informed and vibrant public interest community. How is technology impacting the ways in which public interest law students are building community on campuses? How is social media being used to help with job searches? How is technology helping to build leadership for the future? These are just some of the topics that have been integrated into conference sessions, providing valuable opportunities for you to share what’s happening on your campus.
Equal Justice Works continues its tradition of honoring extraordinary leaders in the public interest community who advance justice on their campuses and in their communities. This year we are pleased to recognize the following outstanding public interest leaders:
• KarenV.Comstock,AssistantDeanforPublicServiceatCornellLawSchoolwithourOutstandingLawSchoolFacultyAward.Karen’svisionanddedicationhavecreatedarobustcultureofpublicserviceatCornell.
• TheSuspensionRepresentationProject,ajointprojectbystudentsofNYU,Fordham,Brooklyn,PaceandCUNYlawschoolswiththeExemplaryPublicServiceAwardforaStudentProject.TheSuspensionRepresentationProjectprovidescriticalrepresentationtosuspendedstudentsintheNewYorkCitypublicschoolsystem.
We hope that you will join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our colleagues. The awards will be presented on Friday, October22at10:45a.m.inBallroomSalonF/G.

ABOUT EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS
The mission of Equal Justice Works is to create a just society by mobilizing the next generation of lawyers committed to equal justice.
We provide leadership to ensure a sustainable pipeline of talented and trained lawyers involved in public service. Equal Justice Works provides a continuum of programs that begin with incoming law school students and extend into later careers in the profession. We provide the nation’s leading public interest law fellowship program and offer more postgraduate, full-time legal positions in public service than any other organization.
For nearly 25 years, Equal Justice Works has collaborated with the nation’s leading law schools, law firms, corporate legal departments and nonprofit organizations to provide the training and skills that enable attorneys to provide effective representation to vulnerable populations. We:
• Helplawschoolsestablishandstrengthenpublicinterest programs;
• Providepublicserviceworkexperience, professionaldevelopment and training for students and lawyers; and
• Buildstrongsupportinthelegalprofessionforpublicservice through pro bono work and financial support.
CONTINUUM OF OPPORTUNITY
The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps program is one of the most productive and highly regarded national serviceprogramsinthenation.ThisAmeriCorpsprogrammakes a lasting impact on the communities it serves by facilitating pro bono opportunities and expanding the legal resources in low-income and underserved communities.
The Equal Justice Works Summer Corps program is anotherAmeriCorpsprogramthatprovideslawstudentswith the opportunity to dedicate their summer to public service at qualifying nonprofit and public interest legal organizations.
The Equal Justice Works Fellowship Program is the largest postgraduate legal fellowship program in the nation and creates partnerships among public interest lawyers, nonprofitorganizations,lawfirm/corporatesponsorsand other donors in order to afford underrepresented populations effective access to the justice system.
Offering an alternative to traditional rankings, The Equal Justice Works Guide to Law Schools is structured so that schools can highlight their clinics, externships, career services, affordability and financial aid, and public service programs.
Our annual Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair attracts more than 1,000 students and lawyers exploring career options with leading nonprofit organizations as well as federal government agencies.
Equal Justice Works has taken a leadership role in educating students and their advisors on the provisions of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act and other programs that provide debt relief to students pursuing careers in the public sector.
