Virginia State University was founded in 1882 as the Vir-ginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, making it the first fully state supported, four-year institution of higher learning for Blacks in America. Today, Virginia State University is one of Virginia’s two land-grant institutions. The campus sits atop a rolling landscape overlooking the Appomattox River in the Chesterfield County village of Ettrick. It is accessible by Interstates 95 and 85, which intersect in adjacent Petersburg, as well as U.S. Routes 1, 301 and 460. The University is centrally located about two hours away from Washington, DC to the north, the North Carolina Triangle area to the south, the Blue Ridge Moun-

tains to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. VSU students live and learn on a 236-acre main campus, with more than 50 buildings, including 15 dormitories and 16 classroom buildings, and a 416-acre agricul-tural research facility. Led by its 12th president, Eddie N. Moore, Jr., former Virginia State Treasurer, the University boasts healthy fiscal management and growth, with a 2007-08 operat-ing budget of over $125 million. The University’s academic programs include the “Bridges to Baccalaureate” program for students transferring from two-year colleges who want to major in the sci-ences, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge and the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program for students planning to pursue doctoral degrees in their chosen field of study. Honors scholarships are also available to entering freshmen, including the Presidential and Provost Scholarships. In 2006, VSU inaugurated the Low Income Families With Talented Students (LIFTS) financial aid program, the first of its kind among HBCUs. LIFTS promises to meet 100 percent of a qualifying student’s financial need by providing 75 percent of a student’s need through scholarships and grants and limiting debt through student loans to 25 percent of VSU’s in-state cost of attendance over four years, regardless of state residency. Virginia State University offers 50 baccalaureate and master’s degree programs and a Certificate of Advanced Study within five schools: The School of Agriculture; The School of Business; The School of Engineering, Science and Technology; The School of Liberal Arts and Education; and The School of Graduate Studies, Re-search and Outreach. In 2006, Virginia State University graduated its first-ever doctoral students, who earned their Doctor of Education in Administration and Super-vision. In 2005, VSU welcomed the first students to its Nursing Program. This important program was introduced to meet the pressing need for qualified nurses in the Southside Virginia region. The School of Graduate Studies coordinates a bachelor of individualized studies degree program, a non-traditional baccalaureate program primarily for working adults. In 1765, Neil Buchanan, a merchant from Scotland, established himself on a tract of land naming his plan-tation Ettrick Banks after Ettrick in County Selkirk in Scotland. Mr. Buchanan served on the first Commit-tee of Safety for Chesterfield County during the Ameri-can Revolution and in 1792 he was appointed a trus-tee by the great Commonwealth of Virginia to oversea the extension of navigation on the Appomattox River. The Buchanans added more land and by 1795 their farm had grown to 529 acres. Ettrick Banks was a tobacco plantation. Through their association with a Scottish trading concern, the Buchanans lived a good

life. After Neil Buchanan’s death in 1797, the property was subdivided and sold. From the Appomattox Indians to mill workers to col-lege students, Ettrick has hosted vastly different popu-lations during the past 400 years. The area has seen its share of historical events through the years, including the journeys of Captain Christopher Newport, prosperous cotton mills, a large Confederate hospital, and Virginia's first state sup-ported black collage, founded in 1882 as Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, now Virginia State University.

One of the longstanding landmarks is Campbell's Bridge, first built around 1810, which has been recon-structed several times but retains its name and status as the only direct thoroughfare from the village into Petersburg. On April 2-3,1865 the most famous event to be seen by the residents of this small mill village was the pass-ing of the main bodies of two great armies down the main road of Ettrick after crossing Campbell’s Bridge from Petersburg under the orders of Robert E. Lee. This was of course the march to Appomattox Court House.

Press Credentials Press credentials are issued to working media only. All requests for credentials should be made to the Sports Information Director, Jason Pompey, at least 24 hours in advance of game day. Credentials may be picked up at the Athletic Office on the Virginia State University Cam-pus prior to game day. Credentials may also be picked up on game day at the “Media Entrance” on the north end (scoreboard end) of Rogers Sta-dium.

Press Box Due to limited seating, only working media with proper credentials will be admitted to the press box during games. The press box is equipped with electrical outlets, telephone jacks and wireless internet. One telephone line will be provided upon completion of the game for use by media services and Sports Information staff. Jason Pompey’s cell phone number is 646-643-8510.

Press Parking Press parking is available behind Rogers Stadium along Fourth Avenue. Parking spots will be designated for press parking.

Radio/Television Broadcasts All requests for radio or television broadcasts of games must be arranged through the Sports Information Office at least one week in advance of game day. When more than one request is received for the same game, top priority will be given to television first, then to the radio station that regularly broadcasts the visiting team’s games. All arrangements for telephone lines are the responsibility of the visiting radio station.

Statistical Information Working media will be supplied press guides, line-up sheets and cumulative statistics, which will be distributed on press row prior to game time. Halftime or “quickie” statistics will be available at halftime. Final statistics will be distributed as quickly as possible after the conclusion of the game.

Player and Coach Interviews Players and coaches will be available for interviews during the week by phone or in person. Interview times for players are dependent upon the players’ academic schedules. At the conclusion of each football game, players and coaches are available for interviews after a 10-minute “cooling off” period. Post-game interviews will be conducted on the field or outside the locker rooms in Rogers Stadium.

Photo Credentials NCAA policy establishes that photographers on assignment, both print and television, will be afforded credentials. Admission to the game will be by media pass ONLY. Photographers are not permitted to shoot between the 25-yard lines and credentials must be displayed at all times. Photographers are not allowed in the team areas for any reason.

Jason Pompey will start his first year as Sports Information Director at Virginia State University. He has two years of previous sports information duties starting out as an undergraduate work-study student at Virginia Union University and as a graduate-assistant at Virginia State University. Pompey received his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Virginia Union University in 2009 and will receive a Mas-ter’s degree in Sports Management from Virginia State University in December of 2010. Interning for previous Sports Information Directors such as Jim Junot at Virginia State University as well as both Tiffany D. Sykes and Tamika Duck at Virginia Union University, Pompey has worked and learned various tasks in sports information world. With a great background, Pompey has the drive and passion to continue the trend of young successful Sports Information Directors in the CIAA conference. In addition to becoming the prime contact for VSU Sports Information, Pompey will be responsible for web content maintenance, publication of athletic newspapers, script for game summaries, pre and post game process, compos-ing/editing player profiles, script for game day announcements, calling and faxing facts and figures to media outlets.

Pompey is a native of Queens, NY but now resides in Richmond, VA with his older brother Jonathan.

In her eighth full year as Virginia State University’s Director of Athletics, two-time Hall of Fame recipient (at Virginia State and Howard Payne universities) Peggy Davis continues to enrich a proud legacy of Trojan athletics. Davis, for the second consecutive year, won the Central Intercol-legiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Athletic Director of the Year award. Under Davis’ leadership the VSU Athletics Department was honored by the university and awarded the Governor’s Excellence Outstanding Team award. In 2005 she received the Jeannette A. Lee Athletic Administrator Achievement Award. Davis has overseen the Trojan ath-letic program since July 10, 2003. Prior to her current position of athletic director, Davis served as the women’s head basketball coach, associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. Davis has been at the helm of a VSU sports program which has won seven CIAA Conference Championships and four NCAA Tournament bids in five years. Six Head Coaches have been awarded the CIAA Coach of the Year under her leadership. She has witnessed many improvements to the athletic facilities at VSU. Renovation began in 2004 with the installation of new electronic bleachers in Daniel Gymnasium and a new playing court surface. The newly completed renovations, upgrades and improvements to Rogers Football Sta-dium, which includes a renovated press box, new locker rooms, weight room, coach’s offices and President’s Suite. The improvements to the VSU Tennis Complex from three regulation courts to nine, an installation of a new NCAA certified track in Rogers Stadium, upgrades to Whaley Colbert Field on the VSU campus, home of the 2007, 2008, and 2009 CIAA Champion Virginia State University baseball team and the 2009 completion of the Men and Women’s Basketball team locker rooms, which also included the expansion to the women’s locker room to continue to com-ply with Title IX and Gender Equity. Many great highlights have taken place under Davis’ athletic leadership, including the men’s pro-gram winning the C.H. Williams All-Sports Award for excellence in the men's sports programs in 2008 and 2009. The women’s sports program was awarded the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Award for excellence in the women’s sports programs in 2004. Davis also started the $1,000 Trojan Athletic Fundraising Club. Davis’ career at VSU has been dedicated to encouraging hard work and producing results. Her tenure as women’s head basketball coach yielded many accolades for the Lady Trojans. In 2000-2001 she guided Virginia State University to a CIAA Eastern Division crown. In 2001-02 she led the Lady Trojans to the CIAA Eastern Division title, the CIAA Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. It was there that the Lady Trojans downed Presbyte-rian College in the first round, marking the first NCAA Tournament win ever for a VSU women’s basketball team. During the 2002 CIAA Tournament, the Lady Trojans received the John B. McLendon Sportsmanship Award, which recognized their outstanding sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Davis’ coaching career is decorated with several history-making events. Before coming to VSU in 1997, Davis was the head basketball coach at Angelo State Uni-versity in San Angelo, TX. She led the ‘Belles to a regular-season and Lone Star Conference Tournament championship. Under her direction, Angelo State also advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament for the first time in school history. Before taking the reins of the Angelo State women’s basketball program, Davis was the head women’s basketball coach at her alma mater, Howard Payne Univer-sity. While at HPU, Davis guided the Yellow Jackets to a Texas Intercollegiate Association Championship. In 1996 Davis was inducted into the HPU Sports Hall of Fame. In 2007 Davis was named to the Lone Star Conference’s 75th Anniversary Basketball Team for her achievements as a player while at Howard Payne University. In 2007, Davis was inducted into the Virginia State University Hall of Fame. In the three conferences that Davis has served as a head coach, she has been named “Coach of the Year” in each. She has served on numerous NCAA Commit-tees. Davis is currently President of the CIAA Executive Committee and is a member of the CIAA Tournament Committee. She is also a member of National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Davis also sits on the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee representing the Atlantic Region. Davis is a native of Bastrop, TX, and received her Bachelor’s degree from Howard Payne University. She received her Master’s Degree from Tarleton State Univer-sity. Davis and her husband, Thomas, have two daughters, Courtney (20) and Taylor (14).

The Virginia State University football team has called Rogers Stadium home since the 1950 season. At 13,500 seats, Rogers Stadium is the largest football stadiums in NCAA Division II and in the CIAA. In addition to football, the CIAA Track and Field Championships are held every year in Rogers Stadium. Opened in 1950, and originally called the VSU Athletic Field, the stadium replaced Rogers Field, where the Trojans had played football since the formation of the formal team in 1902. The stadium was christened Rogers Stadium in 1951. The stadium is named in honor of William A. Rogers (at right), the first coach of the Trojans’ football team. VSU won the opening game in Rogers Stadium when the Trojans downed Bluefield State 25-7 on September 30, 1950. Booker Bradshaw scored the first touchdown in the history of the new stadium. A record crowd of 32,000 packed Rogers Stadium for the Trojans’ match-up against CIAA arch-rival Virginia Union University on October 27, 1978. The structure, which sits at the Fourth Avenue entrance of the VSU campus, has seen several renovations over the years. State-of-the-art lights were installed in the stadium in 2004, and new concession stands and restrooms were built in 2006. A renovated press box and Presidential Suites opened in 2007, and new coaches’ offices, locker rooms and weight rooms opened in 2008. In addition, the entire field is a wireless internet “hot spot,” so fans can log on to keep track of the game’s statistics. New goalposts were installed for the first game of the 2008 season.

Andrew Faison

VSU FOOTBALL HEAD COACH

NINTH SEASON

41-39 RECORD

Coach Andrew Faison is heading into his ninth sea-

son at the helm of the Virginia State University foot-

ball program. He has compiled a 41-39 record

through the 2009 season.

After taking over for Lou Anderson prior to the 2002

season, Faison has worked hard to take VSU football

to the next level. In his inaugural season (2002), he

guided the Trojans to a 7-3 record and second place

in the Eastern Division of the Central Intercollegiate

Athletic Association.

Although the Trojans dropped to 5-5 in 2003, Faison

rebuilt VSU into a contender the next season.

Under Faison’s guidance, VSU finished at 6-4 in both

2004 and 2005.

Injuries to key players at crucial times took their toll

on the Trojans in 2006 when VSU finished at 2-8, and

it marked the first time a Faison-coached team fin-

ished with a losing record.

Injuries again hit the Trojans last season, but Faison was able to work enough magic for the Trojans to

finish with a 4-6 record.

Before arriving at the Land of Troy, Faison was an assistant coach at Winston-Salem State University

(WSSU), where he helped guide the Rams to the CIAA Championship in 1999 and 2000 and CIAA North-

ern Division titles in 2000 and 2001.

Prior to coaching at WSSU, Faison worked for Lou Anderson at VSU. As an assistant coach for the Tro-

jans, he helped guide VSU to the championship of the CIAA’s Northern Division in 1987 and 1988.

An All-CIAA Defensive Back during his playing days at VSU, Faison earned Most Valuable Player honors

among the VSU defensive backs in 1980 and was inducted into the VSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.

Dr. Rodney Gaines received all three of his professional degrees from Virginia Tech:

A B.S. in Business Finance in 1989, M.S. in Health and Physical Education (Exercise

Science) in 1996, and a PhD in 2001 in Education, Curriculum and Instruction with

an emphasis in Health Promotion and Education Research.

Dr. Gaines is the first ever strength and conditioning coach at Virginia State Univer-

sity, and he has many goals for the program.

The mission of the Virginia State University Strength and Conditioning Program is

to help athletes develop power, speed, agility, strength, flexibility, cardiovascular

strength-endurance, and spiritual development. The strength and conditioning also help athletes in the areas of sport nutri-

tion counseling, sport psychology, and spiritual wellness.

Matt Williams is entering his seventh year as the Head Athletic Trainer at

Virginia State University.

Matt completed his undergraduate studies at Emory & Henry College in 1993

and attended graduate school at Radford University from 1993-95.

His resume includes tenure as Head Athletic Trainer at Saint Paul's College

from 1995-2000 and Head Athletic Trainer at Brunswick Senior High School

from 2000 through 2004.

The 2010 football season is expected to continue where the 2009 season left

off for the Trojans. Virginia State University ended their 2009 season on a positive note; win-

ning their final two games of the season; finished with a record of 6-4; and were ranked fourth

in the CIAA Eastern Division.

The Trojans showed improvement on offense and defense placing first in several team

rankings both nationally (Division II) and in their conference (CIAA). Nationally, VSU was

ranked second in pass defense; sixth in fumbles recovered; and ninth in turnovers lost. VSU’s

defense led the CIAA conference in pass defense by only allowing their opponents to average

110.6 yards per game and finished second in scoring defense with their opponents scoring an

average of 17.3 points per game. VSU’s offense led the CIAA in four statistical categories; pass

efficiency averaging 131.2 yards per game; sacks against by only allowing 11 quarterback

sacks; red zone offense by converting 23 of 26 attempts inside their opponents 20 yard-line;

and penalty yardage with 538 total last season. The Trojan’s special teams finished the 2009

season ranked first in the CIAA conference making 7 of 9 field goals; ranked third in kickoff re-

turn yardage averaging 22.9 yards per game.

The Trojans lost eight total starters from last season; three on offense and five on de-

fense. Manuel Becker (OT) graduated in May 2010 and is the only starting offensive lineman

the Trojans will replace. Brandon Crump (WR) and Jamal Norcome (WR), also major parts of

the offensive line graduated as well. Defensively the Trojans lost five players ; All-CIAA First

Team selection Brandon Fortune (DL) who lead VSU in tackles in ‘09; Pierre Clement (LB);

Travis Rachel (LB); Kevin Allen (DB); and Domonique Hargrove (DB).

2010 Virginia State Football PERSONNEL SUMMARY


2010 VSU Football

Leading the Trojan attack will be sophomore quarterback Jarred Battle (6-2, 185

lbs.). Battle secured the starting position by leading VSU in their final two games of the

2009 season and excelling in spring practice. The Trojans hope to control the clock with the

help of their explosive backfield; junior Antwain Lyde (6-0, 200 lbs.) and senior Rahoo

Walker (5-10, 195 lbs.) Both running backs made huge impacts during the 2009 season

rushing for a combined total of 1,056 yards and 14 touchdowns. “Lyde and Walker are both

physical and powerful players that complement each other,” said Coach Faison. Both Lyde

and Walker finished last season ranked respectively among the CIAA rushing leaders. Lyde

finished fourth in rushing yards averaging 66.6 yards per game and Walker finished eighth

in scoring touchdowns totaling 7.

The Trojans top wide receivers, senior Brian Berry and sophomore Corey Young will

be returning as well. Berry (5-10, 180 lbs.), was a member of the 2008 All-CIAA Second

Team, even though he was troubled by injuries after week three, Berry still managed to

lead his team in receptions last season. Scoring two touchdowns and playing as a true fresh-

man in ‘09, Corey Young (6-1, 180 lbs.) led VSU with 349 receiving yards. Sophomore Kai

James (6-0, 180 lbs.) also returns with his excellent route running abilities, making him the

possession receiver for the Trojans as he did in their season finale win making a key catch

against Bowie State.

Defensively Virginia State returns six starters from their ’09 conference leading pass

defense and second leading scoring defense. Controlling the line of scrimmage on defensive

end will be sophomore Rashard Vesprey (6-1, 270 lbs.) and junior James Pratt (6-0, 265

lbs.). VSU’s top returning linebacker is senior leader LaQuentin Milo (6-0, 227 lbs.). Milo was

the second leading tackler in finishing with fifty total tackles on the season. Also returning is

stand-out sophomore Byron Gourdine (6-1, 200 lbs.) who led the conference in fumbles re-

covered and also finished second with five fumbles forced. The Trojans secondary will

showcase four players who have played together successfully leading VSU to the confer-

ence leading pass defense (110.6 yards) and second leading scoring defense (17.3 points

per game). VSU’s defensive backs will be led by seniors Ian White (6-1, 190 lbs.) at corner

and Alfred Ngauja (5-11, 185lbs.) at

safety. Ngauja recorded two intercep-

tions in ’09 and was ranked twelfth in

the conference with six passes defended.

Juniors Larry Armstead (6-0, 185 lbs.),

who will play the other safety spot, and

Howard Spencer (5-8, 170 lbs.) rounds

out the Trojan secondary at the other

corner.

The kicking game will display the

Trojans leading team scorer, senior

kicker Justin Parker (5-9, 170lbs.). Parker

made 21 of 24 point-after attempts and

7 of 9 field goals last season for the

Trojans.


2010 Virginia State Football OUTLOOK

QUARTERBACKS

• Sophomore Jarred Battle won the starting role as VSU’s quar-

terback by excelling during spring practice.

• Battle made three appearances for VSU in ‘09 and won his last

two starts; at Lincoln (PA) and Homecoming 2009 vs. Bowie

State.

RUNNING BACKS

• The Trojans return with a double dose of quickness

and power in the backfield with two consistent

rushing weapons on offense, Antwain Lyde’s physi-

cal running style and the vision and quickness of

Rahoo Walker.

• In ‘09 Antwain Lyde led VSU in rushing yards with

163 carries for 666 yards. Lyde ran for over 100

yards in two games; 145 yards vs. Livingstone and

103 yards vs. Lincoln (MO).

• Rahoo Walker has great vision and can picture

where the hole is going to be before it appears.

Walker had a team leading 7 rushing touchdowns in

‘09 as two came in a Trojan key win in Week 5 at

Fayetteville State.

WIDE RECEIVERS

• The top four receiving leaders return for VSU.

• Brian Berry returns for his senior season with VSU after

catching 22 passes for 290 yards in ’09 and had his best

game in Week 6 vs. Elizabeth City State with 5 receptions for

103 yards.

• VSU’s top returning receiver Corey Young as a true fresh-

man in ‘09 stretched the field with his height and speed

leading the team in receiving yards with 349 yards. Young’s

longest reception of 75 yards came against Lincoln (MO) in

Week 3.

• Hoping for a breakout season in ‘10 is Kai James. James is an

excellent route runner with the ability to become VSU’s

prime possession receiver as he caught three key first-down

passes on VSU’s Homecoming Game vs. Bowie State.

• Corey Sims adds to VSU’s depth at wide-out as he caught

twelve passes for 145 yards in ’09 season.

OFFENSIVE LINE

• Line protection is an area the offensive line looks to

build off of after VSU led the CIAA in pass efficiency,

sacks against, and red zone offense in 2009.

• Three returning offensive lineman have started side

by side for VSU during the past couple of seasons.

• Named to the 2009 All-CIAA First Team, senior Mar-

kus Copeland will guard VSU’s ‘blind side”.

• Along side Copeland will be Broderick Curtis, Fran-

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN

• The Trojans will miss ‘08 and ‘09 All-CIAA First Team

leader Brandon Fortune’s team leading 69 tackles

from a season ago.

• James Pratt played in all ten games from a season

ago and made eight starts at defensive tackle.

• Pratt recorded 29 total tackles in ‘09 and had his

best performance against Bowie State making six

tackles and sacking Bowie’s quarterback for an eight

yard loss.

• Rashad Vesprey is expected to see a lot of doubling

by opposing offensive lineman. Vesprey has a strong

body that commands help and makes the line back-

ers’ job much easier.

• Vesprey started all ten games a season ago tallying

34 tackles assisting on seven against Fayetteville

state in Week 5.

LINE BACKERS

• LaQuentin Milo returns as VSU’s leading tackler

with 50 tackles a season ago. Milo will anchor the

inside linebacker core with his experience and de-

termination for a CIAA title.

• Leading the CIAA in fumbles recovered and ranking

second in fumbles forced as a freshmen, named to

the All-Rookie Defensive Team, Byron Gourdine

returns and looks to play more consistent at the

outside linebacker position.

SECONDARY

• Looked on to make key plays in the 2010 season will

be the Trojan secondary. The secondary has five

players with ample game experience returning and

hoping to rank higher moving up from second to

first as the CIAA leader in scoring defense.

• Alfred Ngauja intercepted two passes a season

ago ,recorded 42 tackles, and made several pass

defenses.

• Larry Armstead will be the other safety along side

Nqauja, starting in his third season. Armstead made

11 total tackles in back-to-back games against Saint

Paul’s and Virginia Union.

• Howard Spencer and Ian White are expected to

play just as well as

they did a season ago

only giving up four

passing touchdowns

combined starting at

cornerback.

SPECIAL TEAMS

• Once the Trojan offense gets in field goal kicker

Justin Parker’s range the rest is almost automatic.

• Justin Parker made five of six field goals in the Tro-

jan red zone and made his longest field goal of 42

yards against Norfolk State in Week 2.

• Setting up the return game for VSU will be Brian

Berry and Alfred Nquaja.

• Nquaja returned nine kick offs for 241 total yards

including an 81 yard return against Fayetteville

State in Week 5.

The Legend of The Trojan

The Trojans exhibited bravery, endurance, power and

daring in their exploits to exert their supremacy in physical

combat. The name “Trojans” is tied to the warriors of Virginia

State, for they too, display these same qualities in defending

the honor and prowess of Virginia State in the world of

athletics.

Prior to October 22, 1932, the athletic teams at Virginia

State were referred to either as Hilltoppers, because the school

is located high upon a hill, or Statesmen after the second of the

official school name. Both of these names seemed too tame

and incongruous with hard work, fighting, and the hard knocks,

especially those encountered by the football team.
