Happy Holidays! As we look back at our many accomplishments this past year, get ready for the holidays and think ahead to 2011, we must take the time to reflect on the things we are thankful for.

We are thankful for this great community in which we live and work.

We are thankful to our readers who recognize the important mission we must fulfill every day.

We are thankful to our advertisers who we work hard with to communicate their very important messages to you every day.

This issue of the 2010 Complete Holiday Gift Guide is full of fun! Fun gift giving ideas. Fun crafts for children and adults. Fun recipes for every age.

We hope you enjoy this special section and are able to find gift giving ideas from our local businesses. We hope you find the craft ideas a great way to spend time with family and friends. We hope the recipes end up as part of your holiday meals or are shared with coworkers, neighbors, teachers and those you are thankful for.

Are you struggling this time of the year, trying to figure out what gifts you will get for everyone on your list? There always seems to be that one person who appears to already have it all. Instead of cluttering up your family and friends’ homes with more objects, why not give them something they will really appreciate? Here’s a few ideas:

1 The gift certificate is often looked at as a last minute afterthought; however, let-ting the receiver choose their own gift will almost always ensure that they get some-thing they will like better than what some-one else would have picked for them. Fig-ure out their favorite places to shop and give them a gift card. Choose a store they enjoy but may not always shop. Many people spend their money on family members and friends, so gift certificates are a nice way to allow them to splurge on themselves.

2 Movie money is a great idea for someone who enjoys a night out but doesn’t always make it happen. Many people only go see a “must see” movie because the cost of the movie and snacks are so high. This way they can enjoy a night out without worrying about their budget. Add an offer to babysit to com-plete the evening.

3 Everyone appreciates looking at pictures of their loved ones. Take an old photograph and have it professionally restored to look brand new, or take a new photograph and have it resized and professionally framed. If there is a celebrity or picture in a magazine you think your friend would like, scan it and increase its size to make a mini poster or picture.

4 Tickets to a sporting event, play or musical are always great gift ideas. Buying tickets for a show as a present also eliminates the worry of getting them something they already own. This is also a good gift for someone who you may not know very well. You can easily find out a sport or team someone likes, or if he or she is a symphony or country music fan.

5 Not only are homemade gifts more personal and unique, they are guaranteed to put a smile on the person’s face knowing you put such time and effort into their gif t. If you know they have a sweet tooth, whip up a holiday

sweet treat.

6 If you are buying for indi-

vidual family members, why not put the cash together and buy a family present, like a pool table for their family room or software for their computer. This is a good way to bring fami-lies together and allows

you to buy more expensive gifts that you would not buy

individually.

7 People often discreetly let you know

what they want, so pay attention to hints, listen and make notes. Better yet, ask them to make

notes and prepare a list of items they would like and the particular shops they enjoy.

This gift guide is full of ideas from local businesses to help complete all your holiday shopping!

When you involve your children in holiday decorating, you build long lasting memories and fantastic keepsakes. If you’re looking for kid-friendly, mess-free holiday decorating projects for you and your kids with step-by-step instructions, check out these ideas. Mess-Free and Kid-Friendly Holiday décor: Decorate pictures with Santa: Craft some homemade frames to adorn the pic-tures of your kids on Santa’s lap. Deco-rate them with holiday foam, pieces of wrapped candy, holiday colored buttons, scraps of ribbon, mini bows, and other creative embellish-ments to give them a festive appeal. N o r t h Pole sign: Look around t h e h o u s e for recyclable materials, such as wrapping paper tubes. Wrap some

decorating For tHe HolidayS witH tHe KidS

white and red ribbons around the tube to cre-ate an innovative candycane looking pole. A cardboard box can be cut to add the sign to the top of the pole with any creative decora-tions you choose and write the words, “North Pole” on the sign with glittery glue. Handprints: Children’s handprints are the best keepsakes, as they change in size every year. Cut out handprints from holiday fabrics, green and red construction paper, or other materials of your choice. You can glue

a bunch of the handprints together (in an abstract way) to make

an adorable holiday wreath.

B e sure to put

the date on the back of your c r a f t s to turn them into

t imeless keepsakes.

Nex t year, your kids will

see the artwork from the previous year (and the fun they had) when you unpack the holiday ornaments and decora-tions. Just the memo-ries of the fun times they had will inspire them to create new holiday crafts year after year. They may even come up with some great ideas of their own!

count down to tHe HolidaywitH tHe KidS

Kids love Christmas but waiting for the big day to arrive isn’t so much fun! Little ones who don’t yet understand can get frus-trated when they don’t know Santa’s day of arrival. One way to make the countdown to Christmas a little easier is by finding fun ways to count down the days in a way they can understand. For really young kids, it is better not to start the countdown more than two weeks before Santa’s arrival. This is enough to seem like an eternity to them, and it will keep them interested and involved with the holi-day planning. There are a number of Advent calendars available on the market that you can mark each day leading up to the holiday in a special way. The building block Advent calendar is truly creative and has you combine smaller models into a bigger one each week until Christmas. You really don’t have to spend money on an elaborate Advent calendar when you can easily create one of your own. All are built on the same principle whether it is opening a door, taking a piece away, adding a piece or anything you can do on a daily basis. To make your own simple and enjoy-able Advent calendar, use a piece of green construction paper and cut out the shape of a Christmas tree. You can let your child use other colors of paper to create decorations or just use as is. Glue individually wrapped pieces of candy, like peppermint discs onto the tree, one for each day until the holiday. Each day your child will take one piece of candy from the tree. When they are all gone,

the holiday is here! Not only is this a helpful way for little ones to count down Christmas, they also get a treat every day. Another way to count down Christmas that is fun for all ages is “The Twelve Gifts of Christmas”. Go to your local dollar or variety store and choose twelve small age-appro-

priate gifts for each child. Wrap them up in little boxes and top with small bows. These can be placed under the tree with

the other gifts or on the tree as cute decorations. Your child will be permitted to open one gift each day until they are all gone and the big day is here! This is a

great way to extend the joy of opening gifts without spending a lot

of money! Print out color sheets for The Twelve Days of Christmas and let your child color one each of the last twelve days. These are easy to find on a variety of sites, and you should find them with the right difficulty for the age of your child. Find a place to display the art work as part of the Christmas decora-tions. Children love to contribute their own art work to any holiday, and they will know when they get to “1” that they have made it to their favorite occasion! You can also make a paper chain, but instead of using it for a decoration, make the chain based on the number of days until Christmas. Every night before bedtime, tear off a piece, and count the remaining links. Even small children can tell at a glance how many days are left if you use this method. Whatever method you choose, make your holiday countdown a fun part of the fes-tivities, and you will both look forward to the big day!

Cookie Ornaments Ingredients

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour1/4 teaspoon salt1 cup sugar3/4 cup butter, softened1 large egg

Directions

1. Place flour and salt in medium bowl; stir to blend. Beat sugar and butter in large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, vanilla and almond extract. Gradually add flour mixture. Beat at low speed until well blended. Divide dough in half; cover and refrigerate 30 minutes or until firm.2. Preheat oven to 350°F. Working with 1 portion at a time, roll out dough on lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut dough into desired shapes with assorted floured cookie cutters. Reroll trimmings and cut out more cookies. Place cutouts on ungreased cookie sheets. Using drinking straw or tip of sharp knife, cut hole near top of each cookie to allow for piece of ribbon or string to be inserted for hanger. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Let cookies stand on cookie sheets for 1 minute. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.3. Prepare icing. Spoon icing into small resealable food storage bag. Cut off very tiny corner of bag; pipe icing decoratively on cookies. Decorate with candies as desired. Let stand at room tem-perature 40 minutes or until set. Thread ribbon through each cookie hole to hang as Christmas tree ornaments.

Directions: Fresh Herbal Oil

1. Pour the oregano, basil, bay leaves, sage and garlic into a cup and rub between your fingers to powder.

2. Divide the powdered content between sterilized bottles. Add in peppercorn.

3 . Pour the oil into the bottles, leaving just a little from their top, and fully covering the herbs and garlic.

4 . Seal the bottles tightly with corks/screw caps. Shake well to mix the contents.

5 . Keep in a cool cupboard for about 2 weeks before using. This would provide time for the flavors to develop.

Directions:Fragrant Lemon Oil

1. Peel the zest from one lemon. Cut into thick pieces, place over a warm oven and dry for a little more than an hour.

2 . Put the lemon zest strips into sterilized glass bottles along with the sprigs of fresh thyme. Pour in the extra virgin olive oil. Preserve for 1-2 weeks before putting to use.

Directions:Fiery Chili Pepper Oil

1. Pour the light olive oil/corn oil into a medium-sized sauce-pan. Add in the cayenne pepper. Chop the red chilies and add them, too.

2 . Simmer the ingredients for 8-10 minutes.

3 . Let cool for half a day. Strain into sterilized bottles.

The oils will remain good for up to a month when stored in a cool place.

8 large egg whites2 cups sugar, plus 1/4 cup2 cups all-purpose flourPinch of salt1 teaspoon cinnamon extract10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled

Directions:

1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with a nonstick silicon baking mat.2. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to whisk together the egg whites and 2 cups of sugar until foamy. Add the flour and salt and mix to incorporate. Add the cinnamon extract, butter and cream, then beat again until completely smooth. In small amounts, add the brown food coloring a drop at a time until desired color is reached, stirring thoroughly between additions.3. In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/4 cup sugar with the cinnamon.4. Scoop a teaspoon of batter onto the prepared baking sheet. Using a small offset spatula spread the batter thinly and evenly into a rectangle about 2x5-inches. Depending on the size of your baking sheet, you should be able to fit 2 to 4 cookies on at a time.5. Sprinkle each rectangle lightly with the cinnamon-sugar. Bake the cookies for about 8 minutes, or until the surface looks dry. The edges should not be browned.6. Working quickly and as soon as the baking sheet comes out of the oven, one at a time use a spatula to flip each rectangle over. Tightly roll both long sides of each rectangle toward the center, similar to forming a scroll. Set aside to cool and repeat in batches with remaining dough.
