Thomas J. Beatson, Jr.
Tom Beatson is an exemplary philanthropist; his generosity and support continue to have a
transformative impact on type 1 diabetes programs at Joslin. Tom is a Joslin 50-Year Medalist; in fact, Tom has lived over 68 years with type 1 diabetes. He is an avid cyclist and, in 2008 at the age of 75, he crossed the 100,000 mile mark with the Arizona Bicycle Club – a feat he’s been striving to achieve since he began counting in 1978.
In 2008, a $1,000,000 gift was given by the Thomas J. Beatson, Jr. Foundation in support
of type 1 diabetes research. This gift was split evenly between the labs of Keith Blackwell, M.D., Ph.D., George King, M.D., Gordon Weir, M.D., Ph.D., and Howard Wolpert, M.D. At that time, the Beatson Challenge was named: a competition among these four labs to celebrate the fi rst publication in an important scientifi c journal with the presentation of a yellow jersey. Hillary Keenan, Ph.D., from Dr. King’s Medalist Study won the competition and the jersey in the fall of 2010.
Also in 2010, Mr. Beatson’s Foundation committed to a spectacular gift of $3,200,000 for the Thomas J. Beatson, Jr. Initiative for Diabetes Longevity at Joslin Diabetes Center. The gift supported the naming of the Eleanor Chesterman Beatson Child Life Care Ambassador Program in memory of Tom’s mother. This program is part of Joslin’s Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Section. Joslin also named the Thomas J. Beatson, Jr. Tissue Regeneration Program in support of Dr. King’s Medalist Study. In addition, seed funding was provided for the launch of Joslin’s WebCare project led by Martin Abrahamson, M.D., and Catherine Carver, M.S., A.N.P.-B.C., C.D.E., as well as the Vision Preservation Study of Jennifer K. Sun, M.D., M.P.H.

Flo Allen-Hopson
Boston Celtics star Ray Allen and his wife, Shannon,
are strong supporters of Joslin and have been since their son, Walker, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Ray’s mother, Flo Allen-Hopson, has been an equally dynamic, involved partner with Joslin. Every member of the family plays a vitally important part in this process and, together, they are a heartwarming example of how a single family, touched by diabetes, has stepped forward to do everything they can to make a difference.
Last year, Flo Allen-Hopson ran in the Boston Marathon with her special t-shirt announcing her dedication: “MY WALKER made me a RUNNER.” As Flo recently said: “This past year, I ran the Boston Marathon to honor our Walker as he continues on his path to triumph over this cowardly disease that is type 1 diabetes. People kept cautioning me about “Heartbreak Hill,” but running up a hill isn’t heartbreak. Watching your 17-month-old grandson fi ght to live is heartbreak. Standing by helpless as your grown son kneels in prayer over his baby in a bedside vigil – that’s heartbreak.” Walker is indeed fortunate to have such a loving and committed family to work with him to manage his diabetes and achieve the best long-term health outcomes possible – today, and in the future.

The Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc. (MLERF) is one of the most signifi cant supporters of
Joslin Diabetes Center’s Beetham Eye Institute.
The MLERF has supported the research of the Beetham Eye Institute since the early 1960s and has contributed over $5 million since that time – making Joslin the largest recipient of MLERF funding. In 2010, the Beetham Eye Institute received grant funding for both the MLERF 2010 Annual Award and the MLERF 2010 Presidential Award; combined, this contribution was the highest from the MLERF to any research group in 2010. Every year, Joslin is proud to host a visit from the MLERF including tours of the Beetham Eye Institute, dinner, and presentations from Joslin researchers.

Erin O’Neill Argueta
Erin O’Neill Argueta, daughter of
Patrick H. O’Neill (Joslin’s Chairman of the Board from 1982 to 1994), recently shared that she considers herself TITO – “totally imperfect, totally outstanding”! She was diagnosed with type 1 diabeteswhen she was 2½ years old and her parents immediately brought her to Joslin; she has been with Joslin ever since. Now married and a mother of two teenagers, Erin has recently started EDONAdesigns, a blog that is, in her words: Creatively Controlled Chaos that allows me to showcase my art (Creatively) and my diabetes (Controlled Chaos) but on some days, my diabetes is Creatively Controlled and the art becomes a little Chaotic. It’s all TITO! (http://www.edonadesigns.blogspot.com) Erin will celebrate her 40th anniversary of having diabetes in May 2012, and wants to host a big house party to help raise money for Joslin. As she expressed in her recent blog post: “I’ve decided it’s time for me to live by a new mantra: ‘It’s not where you take things from, it’s where you take things to.’ I’m sure this has been said before, but I’m ‘stealing’ it for now!”

The Griffi n Drury family
The Maria Griffin Drury Fund was created by the Griffi n Drury family in honor of their beautiful daughter Maria, who had type 1 diabetes and died just
a month after her seventh birthday. For the past nine years, this very special Joslin family has built a team of community supporters and runners who make it their mission year after year to run in the Boston Half-Marathon and raise funds to support Joslin’s pediatric research and the work of Lori Laffel, M.D., M.P.H. The Griffi n Drury family, including daughters Grace and Caroline, continues to put together other fundraising events throughout the year totaling more than half a million dollars.

In 2008, Joslin was given a $2,000,000 commitment from the Moses D. Nunnally Jr. Charitable
Trust of Richmond, Virginia. This gift was given in memory of Dianne Nunnally Hoppes by her family to name the Dianne Nunnally Hoppes Laboratory for Diabetes Complications. Dianne Nunnally Hoppes was a long-time Joslin friend, supporter and patient who died of cancer in 2008. Her family’s gift in her memory supports a laboratory that focuses on understanding, preventing and reversing the long-term complications of diabetes. Under the direction of George King, M.D., Joslin’s Chief Scientifi c Offi cer, scientists in the Dianne Nunnally Hoppes Laboratory for Diabetes Complications will continue their crusade against diabetes complications—an effort that has produced major advances in recent years. The Iacocca family
Philanthropic support of Joslin can happen in many ways: events, annual gifts, direct mail campaigns, endowed funds, and many other special fundraising initiatives. Two
generations of the Iacocca family have supported Joslin for 34 years in every way possible and today the family remains one of our most important and infl uential partners.
In 1975, Mary Iacocca began receiving treatment at Joslin for her type 1 diabetes. The Iacoccas’ fi rst donation to Joslin was in 1977 and ignited a decades-long crusade to support Joslin and its research efforts. In 1981, Lee and Mary Iacocca established the Mary K. Iacocca Fellowship, which provides annual support for research fellows to receive training and mentoring at Joslin. This was the fi rst of several fellowship programs that the family established. Fellows continue to make advances in diabetes research and have gone on to hold prestigious positions at prominent institutions worldwide. In addition to these fellowship programs, the Iacocca family established the Mary K. Iacocca Professor of Medicine, an endowed professorship currently held by C. Ronald Kahn, M.D., and the Mary K. Iacocca Director of the Laboratory of Advanced Genetic Technologies, an endowed position in diabetes genetic research. To date, the Iacocca family has contributed over $8 million to support Joslin’s mission. We are deeply grateful to Lee Iacocca, Ned and Kate Iacocca Hentz, and Victor and Lia Iacocca Assad, for their vision and leadership, which have had a lasting impact on the lives of people with diabetes around the world.
