2006 OVC Championship-Nov. 18- Jacksonville, Ala.

JSU 3, Southeast Missouri 0The Jacksonville State volleyball team claimed its second-straight O’Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title, thanks to a 3-0 sweep of Southeast Missouri in the finals at Pete Mathews Coliseum .

The top-seeded Gamecocks (24-4) used their school-record 19th-straight win and their 21st sweep of the season to earn their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in as many seasons . They claimed a 3-0 (30-25, 31-29, 30-24) win over the sixth-seeded Redhawks (16-18) to take the OVC Tourney title on their home floor .

“This one is special in a different way because it is at home and in front of our home crowd,” JSU head coach and 2006 OVC Coach of the Year Rick Nold said . “It is totally differ-ent than last year in that we came in here as the favorite . It says a lot about our team, coming in on the winning streak and being able to stay focused and take care of business .”

Senior setter Emily Withers was named the tournament MVP to lead three Gamecocks on the all-tourna-ment team . The team’s captain, Withers capped a senior season that saw the Cincinnati native break the school’s all-time assists record . She was joined on the all-tournament team by juniors Joi Watts and Abbey Breit .

“Everybody knows that we are extremely close off of the court, and

that definitely helps us on the floor,” Withers said . “It really hasn’t sunk in yet . It’s hard to believe its my last year, and I couldn’t think of a better way to go out .”

In a hard fought match, the Gamecocks never led by more than seven in any game . They held the Redhawks to an .059 attack percentage

on a day where JSU’s high-powered offense was limited to a .193 attack percentage .

“We knew that they would make us work on defense with the way they move the ball around,” Nold added . “I thought we did a good job of being patient and taking advantage of our opportunities . Abbey Vierling and Jessica Starck did a great job on the back row for us, and Abbey Breit and Joi really stepped up for us from throughout the tournament .”

Five Gamecocks had 10 or more digs in the match to out-dig the Redhawks, 77-60 . Freshman Brittney Whitten led all players with 18 digs, while junior Abbey Vierling added 16 . Senior Jessica Starck had 15 digs,

while Withers and Breit added 12 and 11, respectively .

JSU 3, Eastern Kentucky 2 (ESPNU)The Jacksonville State volleyball team put its best effort on the floor when it mattered most, setting or tying 10 season highs in a 3-2 defeat of top-seeded Eastern Kentucky to earn the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title and its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament .

The third-seeded Gamecocks (18-10, 13-3 OVC) set season highs in kills (99), assists (97) and digs (132) to upend the Colonels (23-7, 14-2 OVC) in front of a national television audience on ESPNU, just one day after knocking off No . 2 Tennessee State in the tournament semifinals .

“I don’t know if you could have asked for a better championship match,” JSU head coach Rick Nold said . “It was a match of two very good teams that were both play-ing well . It was just a matter of who was going to make the final run, and I’m just glad it was us .”

Senior outside hitter Suzi Terrell knocked down a career-high 35 kills on a .315 attack percentage en route to earning tournament Most Valuable Player honors, while junior Emily Withers dished out a school and OVC record 88 assists, 22 bet-ter than her previous career high to lead the offense .

The Gamecocks’ other senior, Kim Halbach contributed five kills, seven digs and five assists to extend her JSU career .

“I can’t say enough about the character of our three seniors,” Nold said . “ Thay all came out and gave us the best volleyball of their careers when it mattered most, and that says a lot about the type of competitors they are .”

Sophomore Abbey Breit, the Gamecocks’ other All-Tournament team member, recorded 23 kills, while sophomores Rebekah Nichols and Katie Moyers set career highs with 18 and 17 kills, respectively .

In the first game, the Gamecocks built an early five-point lead and main-tained it . The Colonels cut the lead to three at 22-19, but JSU answered

with seven unanswered points to help claim the 30-20 win . JSU recorded 30 team digs in the game, while Breit picked up seven kills on just 11 attacks for a .636 percentage, while Terrell added six .

In game two, EKU took its first lead of the afternoon with a 7-6 advantage, and nine lead changes and 10 ties later they pulled out a 30-27 win to even the match at one . JSU recorded 24 kills in the game, five more than in the first, but 28 EKU digs paced the effort . Withers set the JSU attack, recording 22 assists .

A late rally and 25 kills that were set up by 23 more Withers assists led JSU to a 30-27 win in game three, moving the Gamecocks one game away from the title . Terrell put down nine kills in the game to lead a JSU attack that hit a collective .300 in the game .

EKU answered in game four on the back of a .241 team attack percentage and 18 kills to win 30-25 and tie the match at two games, apiece . Terrell added seven more kills for JSU, while West picked up eight more digs to pass the 30-dig plateau for the first time in her career .

In the final game, JSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but five consecutive Colonel points put JSU behind by two . The Gamecocks clawed back to reclaim the lead at 12-11 and held on to claim the final game and the tourney title with a 15-12 win .

The Gamecocks, who extended their win streak to 10, the second longest in school history, traveled to Knoxville, Tenn ., for the NCAA Regional .

Heading into his ninth season at the helm of the Jacksonville State volleyball program, Rick Nold has taken the Gamecocks on a rewarding ride while producing one of the region’s best programs .

The longest tenured coach in JSU’s Division I volleyball history, Nold has guided JSU to the top of the Ohio Valley Conference . His run has seen the Gamecocks reach new heights, including three of the last five Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season Titles, three OVC Tournament titles and the school’s first three trips to the NCAA Tournament .

Nold, a three-time conference Coach of the Year, and his Gamecocks are in the midst of the most dominant stretch in school history, having won either the Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season or Tournament titles in four of the past five seasons . They took their success to another level in 2009, defeating Florida A&M in the first round of the NCAA

Tournament, the program’s first win on that stage .

That tournament win punctuated a memorable season that saw the Gamecocks post a 27-8 record, the most wins in program history, and a 17-1 mark in OVC play . After roll-ing to the regular-season crown and sweeping the league’s tourney, JSU earned the No . 2 seed in the Tallahassee, Fla ., Regional . Nold’s team’s impressive run earned him his second OVC Coach of the Year honor in four seasons, as well as Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors by the AVCA . Senior Brittney Whitten and junior Caitlin Vorbeck each earned First Team All-OVC honors, while the freshman duo of Jen Meyer and Alyx Schulte received All-Newcomer accolades .

The Gamecocks claimed back-to-back OVC regular-season crowns in 2006 and 2007, a feat that earned them the right to host the conference tournament in each campaign . The recent run includes the most dominant season in school history, a 2006 campaign that saw his team finish in the top 60 in the RPI and rattle off a 24-5 record that included a perfect 18-0 record against OVC foes . The Gamecocks swept all but one of those 18 matches and, at one time, had a streak of 49 consecutive games won, the longest active streak in the nation .

Just the third head coach in the program’s history, Nold took over a team in 2002 that was coming off of four consecutive losing seasons and back-to-back 11-17 efforts . Since joining the Gamecocks, the Louisville, Ky ., native has compiled a 156-84 record and has taken a program that had just one Division I postseason appearance before his arrival to postseason play in seven of his eight seasons, including berths in the 2005, 2006 and 2009 NCAA Tournaments, the only three in program history .

A 1998 graduate of the University of Louisville, Nold has made JSU’s transition into the OVC a more than enjoyable one both on and off the court . His teams have combined for a 91-31 record in OVC games and have advanced to at least the semifinals of the OVC Championship in five of the past six seasons . His student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom . Since joining the OVC in 2003, JSU has had 46 volleyball players named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, eight OVC Academic Medal of Honor winners, one Academic All-American and a two-time OVC Female Athlete of the Year in Abbey Breit .

In the Gamecocks’ six seasons in the OVC, they boast the best conference winning per-centage of any team in the history of the OVC . Nold’s teams have also won a remarkable 71 percent of their OVC matches, also the highest in the history of the league, a stat that has placed the Gamecocks in the top three seeds in the OVC Tournament in each of their first five years in the league .

Nold’s teams have consistently had the highest GPA among JSU’s 16 varsity sports since he joined the Gamecocks in 2002 . In 2005-06, his team held a 3 .36 cumulative team GPA and eight players with a 3 .25 of higher . In 2004-05, the Jax State Volleyball team had 10 of 12 players with a 3 .3 GPA or higher and had five with a 4 .0 for a cumulative GPA of 3 .65 . His 2008 squad boasted a 3 .6 grade point average, while the 2009 crew won the program’s third-straight AVCA Team Academic Award .

In 2007, the Gamecocks rode the back of senior Abbey Breit’s encore performance in a Gamecock jersey . Breit became the first player in OVC history to win the league’s Player of the Year Award three times when she earned the honor at season’s end . She also became just the second player in league history to earn First Team All-OVC honors in

T H E N O L D F I L Efour seasons and was just the third player to be named the OVC’s Female Athlete of the Year in back-to-back seasons . Breit and the Gamecocks claimed the league’s regular season title for the second-straight season after posting an 18-10 record and a 15-5 mark in league play . They would fall to eventual tournament champion Tennessee State in the semifinals of the OVC Tournament, which was held in JSU’s Pete Mathews Coliseum . Breit, who also earned all-region honors and led three players on the All-OVC squads, also became the program’s first First-Team Academic All-American . Senior Rebekah Nichols joined Breit on the All-OVC First Team, while freshman setter Brooke Schumacher was an All-Newcomer selection .

The 2006 season began with a tournament title at the University of Louisville that included a 3-2 season-opening win over the No . 12 Cardinals and rolled from there . Led by Breit, a First Team All-American by Collegiate Volleyball Update and the OVC Offensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season, JSU rolled to just the seventh undefeated league record the OVC has ever seen, earning the Gamecocks their first-ever OVC regular season crown and the right to host the OVC Tournament . Nold earned OVC Coach of the Year honors before his squad swept through the tourney as they did 21 of their 29 matches throughout the season . Senior setter Emily Withers set the school’s career assists record en route to receiving Honorable Mention All-America honors with Breit, while Freshman Brittney Whitten was named the OVC’s Freshman of the Year . The 24-5 mark they finished the year with was highlighted by a 16-0 OVC mark and led to their second-straight OVC Tourney title and the second berth in the NCAA Tournament in as many seasons . The Gamecocks traveled to Knoxville, Tenn . For the second time and lost their first-round matchup with No . 14 San Diego .

In 2005, JSU had its winningest OVC season to that point with a 19-11 overall record and a 13-3 league mark but placed third in the regular season, only to roll through an OVC Tournament that culminated with an impressive 3-2 win over Eastern Kentucky in the final on ESPNU, the school’s first-ever nationally televised match . Led by the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and Honorable Mention All-American Abbey Breit, JSU won

Led by first-team All-OVC performers Shari Weyer and Abbey Breit, the Gamecocks rewrote the school’s record books, breaking seven team single-season records, including kills, kills per game, attacks per game, assists, assists per game, digs per game and block assists .

In 2003, Nold’s Gamecocks made an immediate splash in their first season in the OVC, finishing 23-8 and 12-4 in the league, JSU’s first winning season since 1997 . Led by OVC Player of the Year Christina Cary and Weyer, the league’s Freshman of the Year, Jax State rolled into the semifinals of the tour-nament before falling to eventual champion Murray State .

In his first season at JSU, Nold led the Gamecocks to a 14-14 record and earned A-Sun Coach of the Year honors in JSU’s eighth and final season in the conference . A 7-4 conference record was good enough to send the Gamecocks to the A-Sun Tournament for just the second time since joining the league in 1995 .

Nold came to Jacksonville State from his alma mater, where he spent six years on the Cardinals’ staff, the last four as a full-time assistant whose duties included recruiting coordinator . On coach Leonid Yelin’s staff, Nold ran the Cardinals’ volleyball camps, as well as assisted in practice and scouting .

During his time at Louisville, the Cardinals won four Conference USA titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1996 and 1998 .

Also during that time, he was the head coach of the 16-and-under and 18-and-under teams for the Kentucky Indiana Volleyball Academy in Louisville, where he coached teams that won the 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 AAU National Championships . His teams also earned Top 5 finishes at the USA Volleyball National Championships in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001 .

He also served as president of the Cheaha Juniors Volleyball Club program from 2002-03 .

Nold began his coaching career as an assistant at Assumption High School in his hometown, where he helped the girls’ varsity squad to three state champi-onships and a 137-9 overall record before joining the University of Louisville staff in 1996 .

Nold also served as an intern with USA Volleyball, where he assisted the women’s national team in preparations for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta .

Nold received a bachelor’s degree from Louisville in the spring of 1998 in Sports Administration . He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, the Association of Volleyball Professionals and USA Volleyball Impact Certified Coach . He also serves on the All-Region and All-America selections committees and will be a voter in the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll for the fourth-straight year .

Entering its 61st year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In 2008, for only the second time in the past decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003.

The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athlet-ics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public rela-tions director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC.

The vision of leadership demon-strated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate ath-letics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme.

The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basket-ball, cross country, football, golf, ten-nis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle.

Now in its sixth decade of competi-tion, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter mem-bers Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with

Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Dr. William A. Meehan begins his 12th year as President at Jacksonville State University, but his association with the University dates back

to when he enrolled as a first-time freshman in 1968.

Dr. Meehan completed the Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1972 and began a career in education that same year. He earned the Master’s of Science degree in Biology at Jacksonville State University in December of 1976 and returned in January 1977 to serve as an instructor in the Department of Biology. He completed a Doctorate of Education in the field of higher educa-tion administration from the University of Alabama and began the role of President on July 1, 1999.

Since 1977, Dr. Meehan has served in numerous administrative and teaching positions at the University. Among these are Coordinator of Medical Technology Program, Director of Academic Advisement, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, Associate Vice

President for Academic and Student Affairs, Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs and Acting Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

Dr. Meehan is well aware of the benefits of college ath-letics and what athletics adds to the college experience.

“I’m very proud of the fact that we have won 42 Ohio Valley Conference Championships and two Women’s All-Sports Trophy since joining the Conference in 2003,” said Meehan. “We have claimed conference titles in football, rifle, volleyball, men’s tennis, women’s ten-nis, men’s golf , women’s golf, softball and baseball. We have enjoyed post-season competition in many of our sports, which brings national exposure and prestige to our University. As a matter of fact, we have won 12 more OVC titles than any other school in the Conference since 2003.

“Our student-athletes excel, not only on the fields of competition, but also in the classroom,” added Meehan. “I’m proud to say that we have more than 130 of our student-athletes with a 3.0 grade point average or higher.”

In 2011 and beyond, Dr. Meehan hopes to more accu-rately accomplish the institution’s mission, which means integrating traditional academic programs with career-oriented programs for the students of Alabama. His vision for the future is based on the philosophy that

THe HISTOry

Academic Affairs JSU seeks to be recognized as the premier regional, comprehensive institution of higher learning in the Southeast. We aspire to be noted primarily for our focus on students, the provision of selected academic and professional programs recognized for their excellence, and a geo

graphic and culturally diverse faculty and student body. Our educational programs are designed to prepare students for the marketplace of the future and citizenship in a world economy.

From modest beginnings, Jacksonville State University has evolved into the educational center of Northeast Alabama. The Alabama Legislature in the 1882-83 session created a state normal school when Governor Edward O’Neal signed into law a bill creating the school on February 22, 1883. Jacksonville State Normal School acquired the facilities and equipment of Calhoun College, consisting of 12 acres of land and a two-story brick building. The Board of Directors elected James G. Ryals, Jr., as the first president. The school opened with three instruc-tors: W. J. Borden, Mathematics; Eliza A. Bowen, English; and Ida J. Woodward, primary department. As stipulated in the establishing act, the Normal School administered a preparatory school for children of the town and surrounding areas. At the end of the first year, on August 15, 1884, William Mark Hames, President of the Board of Directors, reported that funds totaling $4,751.25 had been received, including $2,500 from the state; that 25 students were enrolled in the normal school; and that 222 were in the preparatory school. The Normal School remained in operation until 1930, when it became Jacksonville State Teachers College. Five years later, the College earned regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The name again changed to Jacksonville State College in 1957

when the first graduate program—the master’s degree in elementary education—was created. On August 2, 1966, the Legislature autho-rized the State Board of Education to elevate the College to university status. On August 17, 1967, the Legislature established an independent Board of Trustees for the University and divested jurisdiction from the State Board of Education.Jacksonville State University has been served by 11 presidents: James G. Ryals, Jr. (1883-85), J. Harris Chappell (1885-86), Carleton Bartlett Gibson (1886-92), J. B. Jarrett (1892-93), Jacob Forney IV (1893-99), Clarence William Daugette (1899-1942), Houston Cole (1942-71), Ernest Stone (1971-81), Theron E. Montgomery (1981-86), Harold J. McGee (1986-99), and William A. Meehan (1999-present).Jacksonville State University has developed into a modern regional university serving Northeast Alabama on a 392-acre campus with 63 buildings. In addition, the University operates an off-campus center in Gadsden and videoconferencing sites throughout Alabama and Northwest Georgia. Through its programs of teaching, research, and service, Jacksonville State University has served the region and state for more than 100 years.
