I dont think there were any big surprises. It was justtrying to put a new culture and a new way of thinkinginto the program. There was a new way of doing things. We are obviously further along now than we were a yearago, and have made good strides in that area.

YYoouu hhaavvee aallssoo sseeeenn tthhee PPaattrriioott LLeeaagguuee nnooww ffoorr oonneeffuullll sseeaassoonn.. WWhhaatt aarree yyoouurr tthhoouugghhttss oonn tthhee lleeaagguuee??

Its eight teams with six of them particularly thathave been very good, very comparable and very capa-ble. Its a very tight and competitive league. Now youhave teams seven and eight, Navy and Army, trying tojoin that group or possibly at some point trying toleapfrog out of that situation. Its a very competitiveleague and a lot can happen from one weekend to thenext.

I think for me the spring season is always huge be-cause its an extra number of weeks to continue buildingwhat we are building. We are trying to influence the guyson and off the field in terms of this culture I am talkingabout. In that sense, the spring season is always sig-nificant for me. I think it went very well. In the end, thefall season is what matters, and the spring season indevelopmental. In the end, we did develop. How muchwe developed will come out this fall.

It was two things. One, its a function of how well ateam does and what it is supposed to do in our style andsystem. I think last year, the fact we didnt score a lot ofgoals is that we did some things on the field okay andwe needed to be better than okay. The second part of itis that it helps to get in players that are a little more ca-pable of being dangerous on their own at times. Hope-fully we have progressed enough in that area.

NNaavvyy SSoocccceerr MMiisscceellllaanneeoouuss IInnffoo The 2010 season will be the 90th for the Navy mens soccerprogram. Winners of five national titles (1932, 1943, 1944,1945, 1964), the Midshipmen are one of the most elite pro-grams in soccer history, winning 612 games, the 15th mostamong all NCAA programs. Of the 27 players on this years roster, 21 of them are fresh-men or sophomores. Brandt welcomes 11 freshmen to thefold and almost half the roster (12) will be newcomers. Brandt welcomes back six of the top seven scorers from ayear ago. Of the 17 goals that were scored a year ago, re-turnees tallied 12 of them and of the 18 assists distributed ayear ago, returnees had 12 of them. Sophomores this year accounted for five of the eight game-winning goals, including two of the four overtime goals scoredby Navy last year. Of the five game-winning goals producedby sophomores last year, all five of them were that playersfirst career tally. Just one player, Michael Uyehara, accounted for more thanone game-winning goal last year. Navy had seven playersproduce its eight game-winning goals.

Dave Brandt was hired to lead the Navy mens soccer program onDec. 23, 2008, and his impact was immediately noticed. He installed aball-control, possession-oriented offense that gave Navy instant results. The Midshipmen won four more games from the previous season, whileearning victories over strong programs such as Mount St. Marys, Tem-ple, Loyola (Md.), Lehigh and their first win over Army since 2005. In addi-tion, Navy battled defending NCAA Champion Maryland toe-to-toe for 90minutes, before eventually falling, 1-0.Brandts recruiting impact was felt right away, as the 2009 roster

was dotted with 13 freshmen, three of which would start the majorityof the season. Five of the top seven scorers from 2009 were fresh-men, and the 13 plebes accounted for 27 of Navys 52 points andnine of Navys 17 goals.Brandt came to Navy from Messiah College, where he compiled

a remarkable 246-25-14 (.888) record in 12 seasons, winning sixNCAA Division III National Championships, including the 2008crown.Dave Brandt brings to the Naval Academy his en-

ergy, work ethic, a dedication to his student-athletes,strong personal, professional and academic values and aproven track record for winning that is extraordinary, saidNavy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. His accomplishments as aleader and educator of men are benchmarks for soccer coaches at anylevel. We are extremely proud that Dave and his wonderful family willjoin us at the Naval Academy for what we know will be a highly suc-cessful tenure in Annapolis. My family and I are certainly excited for the opportunity and challenge

of coaching men's soccer at the Naval Academy, said Brandt. The qual-ity, purpose, and values that the Academy stands for have everything todo with why I was interested in the first place, and why I hope to be an

asset to them in fulfilling their mission on many differentlevels.Since taking over the Messiah College soccer team in

1997, no one in the country can match Brandt's accom-plishments. He ranks as the winningest coach in NCAAhistory with a winning percentage of .888 and his squadswon NCAA Division III National Championships in 2000,2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008 and were NationalRunners-Up in 2002 and 2007. His 2005 squad posted a24-0-0 record; one of just six undefeated and untied sea-sons in all divisions since 1972. He is the one of twomen's soccer coaches in the country at any level to havewon six national titles.Brandt has won four National Soccer Coaches Asso-

ciation of America (NSCAA) Coach of the Year awards(2000, 2002, 2004 and 2008) and was the fastest coachin NCAA men's soccer history to reach the 200-win mark.Dave Brandt is clearly among the very top coaches

in the country at any level, said Jeff Tipping, the NationalSoccer Coaches Association of America Director ofCoaching.A renowned recruiter, Brandt won at Messiah with a

mix of highly regarded superstars and unheralded playersthat flew under the radar. He was able to land severalplayers that drew major Division I interest, including highschool All-American and Ohio's High School Player of theYear, Kai Kaisguran, who he landed away from nationalpower Akron in 2004. Kaisguran was a four-time All-American at Messiah and currently plays for MajorLeague Soccer's Chicago Fire. In addition, he recruitedHayden Woodworth, who selected Messiah over PennState in 1999, and Patrick Lenehan, who opted to attendMessiah over Notre Dame in 2004. To date, Brandt hashad eight players play in the professional ranks.Under Brandt, Messiah had 18 All-America selections

and five National Player of the Year recipients in just 12years.However, Brandt's greatest success comes in the way

he develops players. Several players who were not highlyregarded at any level have gone on to stardom. DavidMcClellan became the National Player of the Year in 2005and has been the United Soccer League's Player of theWeek with the Harrisburg City Islanders six times, afterdrawing no interest from any Division I school. ChrisBoyles became a first-team All-American at Messiah afterreceiving no interest from any school at any level, andwould go on to play professionally for the USL's CharlotteEagles. A fantastic athlete, Boyles is now the 11th-rankeddecathlete in the world. Current Messiah player, J.D.Binger, received very little recruiting interest in highschool, but ended last year as a two-time first-team All-American and had several MLS clubs interested in draft-ing him.Messiah stepped up to battle several Division I teams

in the last four years and the results were impressive.During the last four years, Messiah defeated Delawaretwice and tied Penn and Maryland in preseason exhibi-tions. Brandt stated a goal when he arrived for Messiahto be the best place in the country to play college soccer. He developed the program to get players to play for four

years, to graduate and become family for life. At Mes-siah, there was massive alumni involvement and tradi-tion. His influence was found at the ticket gate as well, asthe Falcons averaged a Division III-best 1,678 fans pergame at home in 2008, a total that would have rankedMessiah 15th in Division I.Brandt's soccer teachings are based on a compelling

vision for teamwork, principled thought and action andan expected outcome of making the whole greater thanthe sum of the parts. His playing style emphasizes pos-session emphasizing penetration that requires positionaldiscipline and high technical requirement. His Messiahteams led the nation in attendance regularly, thanks inlarge part to the fact he plays a style that is fast, athletic, skillful, exciting and fun to watch.Brandt's knowledge of the game has been met with

high regard, as 1,000 coaches at the NSCAA nationalconvention in 2007 attended his presentation on Tech-nical Precision in Training for Championship Perform-ance in the Match, and he has his NSCAA AdvancedNational Diploma. In addition, he has had 10 years ofclub coaching experience and currently coaches the LDCUnited Boys Under-14 team. During the summer, he ranthree weeks of camps on campus for approximately1,100 campers per summer. Every session has beenfilled by the beginning of May since 2002.Coach Brandt's session at the 2007 national con-

vention was met with rave reviews, said Tipping. He isa special coach and ought to be at the top level.Brandt received his Bachelors of Science degree in

Business Administration from Messiah College in 1985.He received his masters of education degree in athleticadministration from Temple University in 1990.Brandt and his wife, Diane, have a daughter, Alexan-

dria (16) and son, Danny (13). The family resides inAnnapolis.
