CHAMPIONSHIP RECORDS

Entering his 13th season at Marist, head coach Tim Smith has taken the Red Foxes to the highest level of success during his time with the team. His teams have won eight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champi-onships, and received as many NCAA Tourna-ment bids. In the past 10 years, the men’s teams have compiled a record-setting 78-5 mark in the MAAC.

During the 2009-10 regular season, his play-ers have taken the program to a higher level. Seniors Loic Sessagesimi and Christian Coley became the fi rst players to reach the ITA Regional Tournament Round of 16 in Novem-ber. Sessagesimi reached the quarterfi nals to net the highest individual fi nish under Smith’s tutelage.

Additionally, Marist four players were awarded MAAC Player of the Week fi ve times during the spring. The accolade was handed out 10 times during the regular season.

In Smith’s 13 years at the helm of the Red Foxes, he has compiled a 216-71 record. He has coached the men’s team at Marist to 208 wins, while earning eight as head coach of the women’s tennis team. The team continues to play one of the most competitive tournament schedules in the east, having played the Army, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn State, Columbia USTA Open, ECAC and Inter-collegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Tourna-ments. Dual matches have included matches against Alabama, Baylor, Brown, Florida, Har-vard, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas. His teams and players are regularly recognized by the ITA for their academic excellence and have won every tennis award offered by the MAAC.

The Red Foxes have competed in eight NCAA Tournaments under Smith. He has taken the program to the University of Texas at Austin, Baylor, LSU, Harvard, Alabama, Mississippi State and Florida.

Prior to coaching at Marist, Smith registered an 80-4 record over four years at Dutchess Community College and one year at SUNY Oswego for a combined career record of 296-74, a winning percentage of .800. While at Dutchess, he coached three nationally ranked teams, two of which fi nished in the top 10 and three junior college All-Americans. Over the past 25 years he has guided numerous students to receive state and national rank-ings.

In addition, Smith is an ETA-USTA National Team Coach, an ETA Junior Davis Cup Coach and a USPTA Level I teaching professional. Smith was named the USPTA Coach of the Year for the Eastern Section in 1993, 1995 and 2009. Additionally, he was the recipient of the Presidential Sports Award for Tennis. His peers selected him as the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2003. In 2008, he was inducted into the Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame for his contributions to tennis and the community.

Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from SUNY Geneseo, where he lettered in tennis and was captain of the team. He received his Masters of Science from SUNY Albany in Student Personnel in Higher Educa-tion and his Certifi cate of Advanced Study (CAS) in administration from SUNY New Paltz.
