NCGA Corn Yield Guide

A Message from Your President

In 2010, corn growers faced numerous weather challenges, from untimely rains to scorch-ing heat, to bring the United States the third largest crop on record at 12.5 billion bushels.

Despite a minor decline in average yield, U.S. farmers rose to the occasion and provided a crop that will meet a growing demand for food, feed and fuel.

The National Corn Yield Contest did have a record-breaking year as participation increased by 2.3 percent, setting a new record number of entries at 7,125. As the contest continues to grow in popularity, its results reverberate through the industry as growers study the methods of winners and adopt tactics to maximize their own yield potential.

We thank two groups whose dedication makes this contest possible: the volunteer contest supervisors and the seed companies.

Volunteer supervisors work a considerable amount each fall, some documenting as many as 30 yield checks. These crop advisors, extension personnel, government employees and financial professionals give back to the agricultural industry through their hard work and ensure the integrity of the contest as a whole.

The seed companies also demonstrate ongoing dedication to the National Corn Yield Con-test. These companies recognize the stiff competition inherent in the contest and realize that it provides an excellent showcase for the myriad of new seed offerings. As the National Corn Yield Contest continues to grow in popularity and renown, seed representatives step forward to help growers work toward their dreams.

In 2011, there will be many changes that will help modernize the contest to keep up with the rapid pace of development in agriculture. Through new deadlines, software and entry classes, the 47th Annual National Corn Yield Contest will again adapt to better reflect the paradigm in which it exists.

Growers should note that deadlines for the contest will come earlier this year. Early entries will now be due by June 15 and late entries will be due by July 15. While this may seem significantly earlier, the shift is necessary to accommodate for the rapid increase in the level of participation. Notably, since 2007 entries have increased by 44 percent. With so many applicants entering the field, earlier deadlines are a necessity to ensure each participant’s records are properly reviewed and the contest maintains the high level of integrity and stringency for which it is known.

The software used in the contest has also been significantly upgraded to create a unified format that further standardizes how information is collected and stored. Through this software, both growers and their seed representatives will have a satisfying and efficient experience while viewing and completing forms online. The software also provides a simplified data structure allowing the National Corn Growers Association to more fully analyze and utilize this invaluable source of data.

Finally, in 2011 two entry classes will be dropped, reducing the total number of entry classes from eight to six by eliminating the ridge-till categories. The former ridge-till categories for irrigated and non-irrigated will be consolidated into their respective conventional categories. This decision came about as participation in both ridge-till categories continually declined despite surging overall participation. Now, the conventional categories will encompass any type of tillage that disturbs the full width of the row. This move allows the contest to stay current and best reflect national corn production trends.

We applaud the successes of the 2010 winners. Their stories, highlighted throughout the guide, are a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the American farmer and provide valuable insight into innovative practices.

American corn farmers have a great story to tell. American agriculture continues as a leader in both the domestic and international economies. NCGA works to provide opportunity for those who provide the world with food, feed and fuel.

Think of Sam Santini as a climber. Thirty years ago, when he first started competing in the contest, his goal was to reach 200 bu./

acre. Once he hit that milestone, the goal immediately became 250 bu./acre. Now that he’s topped the 300-bushel mark, he’s set his sights on 350. “That’s the great thing about competing in the contest,” says Santini, who has now been to the winner’s circle four times. “It keeps you reaching for the next level. As you go along, you keep learning and improving and become a better farmer all the way around.”

A prolonged stretch of dry weather midway through the growing season had Santini doubting that he’d produce a winning yield this year. “We went from mid-June to mid-July without any rain, not a drop,” he says. “The corn was starting to burn up. But then, we got a lucky thunderstorm. After that, we started getting normal rains again for the rest of the summer. It saved the crop. Just 50 miles to the south of us, the rains never did come. A lot of people didn’t get any crop at all.”

Santini’s contest field had been in continuous corn for the last 30

years. Soon after the 2009 harvest, he worked the ground with a chisel plow and incorporated 50 units of nitrogen.

On April 28, he planted Hubner H-5909VT3P. “We had a great planting season, not too wet and not too dry,” he says.

Planting population for the contest field was 38,000 seeds/acre. “We try to bump up the population on our test plots by 1,000-2,000 every year, just to see what we can do,” he notes. “The seed is getting so much better all the time. Twenty years ago, there’s no way we could have pushed things this high.”

For a starter fertilizer, Santini laid down 10 gal. of 10-25-5 in a 2"x2" band, including 1 qt. of Xtra Power with the starter. Immedi-ately after planting, he sprayed with Guardsman and Prowl and 50 gal./acre of nitrogen over the top. When the corn was knee-high, he sidedressed with another 20 gal. of nitrogen and 8 oz. of Bio-Forge. He also doubled up on Headline, making one application when the crop was shoulder-high, then following up at tassel.

As impressive as this year’s yield was, Santini can’t help but look back. “I’m sure the dry spell in June and July cost us at least a few bushels,” he says. “If we just had a little rain, who knows what that yield might have been?”

After back-to-back second-place finishes in the A No-Till/Strip-Till Non-Irrigated Class in 2008 and 2009, Mike Scholting now has a second-place award in this class as well.

Picking a hybrid that could utilize the fertility levels he’s been steadily building in his contest field played a major part in this year’s high yield. “We’ve been using this particular hybrid for 3 or 4 years and there’s a lot to like about it,” Scholting says. “Along with the yield potential, it has good stalk strength. And it gives you a short plant. We plant in 20” rows and, when you do that, you tend to get tall corn.”

The field had been planted to corn in 2009. Several weeks before 2010 planting, Scholting burned down weeds with Cinch ATZ. When the corn was 4” tall, he applied Roundup. To complement the anhy-drous he knifed into the field the previous fall and the 10-34-0 starter fertilizer he put in the furrow with the planter, Scholting sidedressed with 28% nitrogen when the corn was 6"-8" tall. He calculates his total nitrogen use at 310 units, total phosphorus at 150 units.

With one exception, Henry Everman had very good weather for growing corn in 2010. “We did get a little stretch of heavy rains in late May,” notes Everman, who has placed several times in this category in the last decade. “But that tapered off, and from then on, everything settled down.”

Everman plowed his contest field with a moldboard plow after the 2009 harvest. In the spring, he went over the ground several times with a tiller-drag and field cultivator and roller. “We like to let some heat into the soil,” he says. “When the ground is ready, we’ll plant.”

When he planted his contest entry on April 24, he laid 160 units of nitrogen and 90 units of phosphorous to the side of the planter row. He also spread 30 lb. of potash. When the corn was 5-6” tall, he sprayed Roundup and Resolve Q to ward off potential problems with velvetleaf and lambsquarter. “We haven’t had anything out of the ordinary for weeds during the last couple of years,” he says. “We’ve been able to get by with just one application.”

The big question at the Steiger household this year is likely to revolve around who gets top billing as the best corn grower in the

family. Betty Steiger can certainly make a case that the title is hers with a category-winning yield skirting the 300 bu./acre mark. On the other hand, her husband, Eugene, can also lay claim to the cham-pionship. He captured first place honors in the AA No-Till/Strip-Till Non-Irrigated Class.

“It’s pretty exciting,” says Betty. “We took a second place in one of the classes in the national contest a few years ago, but this is the first time that we’ve taken a top award.”

Steiger gives Mother Nature the lion’s share of the credit for this year’s impressive yield. “We had abundant rain throughout the sum-mer, a lot more than normal,” she says. “Our contest field, though, drains very well.”

Warm weather on the front end of the growing season also helped. “We were able to plant the contest field on April 16, which is just a few days ahead of normal for us,” she says. “We had some excel-lent growing degree days right after that and the crop was out of the

ground in about seven days. It was a great start.”

Getting the family’s 12-row, John Deere 1760 Con-servation Planter, fitted with precision meters, in tip-top condition ahead of the plant-ing season was another key. Every year, about a month before planting, Eugene and nephew Bob Bloom will take the planter into the shop and spend a solid week tearing it down and putting it back together. “They check all the bearings and chains and the seed opening to make sure ev-erything is working just right. When you’re going after high yield, you can’t overemphasize the importance of getting that seed placed just so,” Steiger says.

For a contest hybrid, Steiger chose DeKalb DKC63-42, planted at 42,000 seeds/acre. “We push the population a little on our contest fields,” she notes. “Our normal population is about 40,000. When you go that high, you need a hybrid with good stalk strength and stand-ability.”

Steiger is already looking forward to next year’s contest. “We’ve been using a seed treatment for several years,” she notes. “It’s worked very well for us, but we might try a new product this year to see how it compares. We’ll also be looking at some new hybrids and at ways we might tweak the planter to make it even more efficient.“

Kevin Nagel was more than a little surprised when he captured sec-ond place. “It was a tough growing season,” he says. “For the most part, we were completely saturated with water in central Iowa.”

Having his contest entry on the right field saved the day. “This field has good soil, good fertility levels and good drainage above and below ground. Our contest corn never wanted for anything.”

Nagel knifed in 180 lb. of anhydrous ahead of planting, then sidedressed 60 lb. of UAN when the crop was in the 4-6 leaf stage. For pre-emerge weed control, he sprayed Roundup and Harness Extra. He made a second application of Roundup (half-rate) right before canopy. Just before tasselling, he flew on Headline (full-rate). “We started using it when it first came out, and we believe it’s made a big difference,” Nagel says of the fungicide. “Next year, we’re thinking of doubling up. We’ll ground apply it right before canopy when we make our second application of Roundup, then fly on a second application after tassel. The whole idea is to keep the plant healthier for longer.”

David Schultz’s third-place finish marks the first time he’s cracked the winner’s circle. “We had plenty of moisture, and the rains were timely. It also wasn’t really hot. I actually thought our yield might have been a bit better,” he says.

Schultz deep-tilled and knifed in 160 units of N into soybean ground last fall. He broadcast another 120 units of N while field cultivating in the spring. A day before his April 16 planting, he sprayed Harness. “We had some of the best planting conditions we’ve had here in the last 10 years,” he says. “Everything was just perfect.”

When the crop reached the 8-10 leaf stage, Schultz applied 30 oz./acre of Roundup and 1 gal./acre of Impact. Right after tasselling, he flew on 6 oz./acre of Headline and 1 gal./acre of Impact. “We’ve been using Headline for several years and do side-by-side comparisons,” he notes. “Last year, it really didn’t seem to do much for us. This year, though, we saw a yield boost of 14-20 bu./acre. It’s one of those things we’re still trying to figure out.”

The Swede family—Jason, his dad, Gary, and brother, Ryan—captured second place honors in this class in 2005, the very

first time they entered. Jason’s first place finish this year is their first trip back to the winner’s platform since then.

Swede views the contest as an opportunity to try new things on limited acres to see if there might be applications for the entire farm. One of the things he tried this year for the first time was foliar feeding when the crop was about chest-high.

“Our dealer told us he had heard some good things about it from several of his other customers,” says Swede. “We saw it as a way to give the corn a little boost going into tasselling and silking.”

Swede also decided to switch brands on the fungicide he flies onto his crop just before tasselling. “With the product we had been using for several years, we didn’t feel like we were seeing much of a yield advantage,” he says. “It might just have been that the weather conditions during those years weren’t right for it. We decided to give Quilt Xcel a try this year.

“It’s hard to come up with any kind of hard and fast numbers, but we felt like we did get some yield boost from it. The thing we still need to determine is whether we got enough of an advantage to justify the cost.”

Swede’s contest field had been planted to corn the previous year. After the harvest, he broadcast 200 lb. of potash (0-0-60). Two days before his April 22 planting date, he went over the field with a strip-tiller and worked in 25 gal./acre of 30% liquid nitrogen below the seedbed.

At planting, he laid down 250 lb. of 9-27-4 starter fertilizer in a 2” x 2” band. He also put a 6-24-6 pop-up fertilizer in the furrow with the seed. Just before the crop came out of the ground, he sprayed with Roundup to kill any weeds that might be waiting to compete with the emerging corn. He followed up with another application of Roundup when the corn was knee-high.

He sidedressed another gallon of 30% nitrogen at about the same time as the second Roundup application. For the entire season, his records show he applied 170 lb. of nitrogen, 70 lb. of phosphorous and 130 lb. of potassium.

Ed Wood will remember the 2010 growing season as one of the warmest ever. “We’re in the mountains, so we usually don’t get a lot of 90-degree-plus days,” says Wood, who registered his last national contest placement in 1993. “But we more than made up for that this year. The hot weather started in late June and continued through August. I was surprised that the corn held up as well as it did.”

After harvesting a corn crop the previous fall, Wood broadcast 5 tons/acre of chicken litter on his contest field. Roughly three weeks ahead of his April 29 planting date, he burned down the field with Gramoxone, Bicep II Magnum and Weedar 64. For a starter fertilizer, he laid down a 2” x 2” band of ammonium sulfate and diammonium phosphate in a 75:25 mix (100 lb. total).

When the corn was knee-high, he put on 30% UAN to bring his total N use to 120 lb. (not counting the chicken litter). At the same time, he sprayed with Banvel and Peak. Shortly after tassel, he flew on Headline to control gray leaf spot.

There were times during the growing season when Michael Wolpert wondered if the weather might ruin his chances for a high-yielding contest entry. “We had a wet spell right after planting that had us a little concerned, and we also had more 90-degree-plus days than we normally have.”

But he also caught a few breaks on the weather. “We did have a two-week span of near-perfect conditions for planting,” says Wolpert, noting that this year’s contest yield was an all-time personal best. “We also had timely rains throughout the season. That’s something that’s hard to beat when you’re going after yields.”

Wolpert is a self-described “stickler” for getting his John Deere 1790 planter ready before he heads to the field. “You want it to be in as close to perfect condition as possible. Close enough is not good enough. I believe 85%-90% of yield comes down to getting a nice uniform stand, and that’s only going to happen if the planter is operating efficiently. The other 10% is up to the good Lord. This year, he blessed us.”

Eugene Steiger Bloomington, Wis.

299.6667 BU/ACDeKalb DKC61-21Pop: 42,000Harvester: JD 9656 STS

The Steigers—Eugene and his wife, Betty—pulled off a rare con-test feat this year. Not only did Eugene capture first place in this

class with an all-time personal best yield just shy of 300 bu./acre, Betty took home top honors in AA Non-Irrigated. “We simply had a very good year for growing corn,” says Eugene.

Steiger’s contest field was planted to soybeans the previ-ous year. Ahead of planting, he spread dry fertilizer—230 lb. of nitrogen, 106 lb. phosphorous, 127 lb. potash and 36 lb. sulfur—in a split application. “We did the first application just as soon as we could get on the field,” he relates. “The second one was right before planting.”

He planted his contest field on April 16 at a population of 42,000 seeds/acre. He selected DeKalb’s DKC61-21 treated with Ac-celerone. “It’s the first time we’ve used this variety, and we were impressed,” says Steiger. “It lived up to its billing with good yields and standability. It also had a very good appearance from the time it came out of the ground. It’s a showy hybrid.”

To help get the crop off to a good start, he put on 7 gal./acre of

6-18-6, 1 pt./acre of zinc and 3 oz./acre of Ascend (a growth hormone) through the planter. “Nature helped us out this year too,” he says. “Right after planting, we had all the growing degree units we needed to get the corn out of the ground and growing.”

For weed control, Stei-ger relied on a pre-emerge application of Harness at a rate of 2 pt./acre and Hornet at 3 oz./acre. Weeds of most concern included giant ragweed, lambsquar-ter and foxtail. “We got excellent control with that combination,” he says.

In midsummer, he flew on 6 oz. of Headline and another 3 oz. of Ascend. “It’s something we’ve been doing for the last couple of years, and it has really worked well for us,” he says of the Head-line. “This year, we saw a yield advantage of around 25 bu./acre in side-by-side comparisons with nontreated fields.”

Steiger says he’s enjoyed participating in the contest over the years for a variety of reasons. “We feel that our corn ground here in southwest Wisconsin is as good as there is anywhere in the country,” he says. “Being in the contest gives us a chance to see how we stack up against the very best growers. We pick up some new ideas every year that make us better at what we do.”

Frank Raasch, who makes his first appearance in the national winner’s bracket this year, will remember 2010 as a year of abundant moisture. “We were really, really wet,” he says. “But that’s the way it has been here for the past four years.”

He says selecting just the right field had a lot to do with his high-yield entry. “This field is very well-drained with very good cotter-silt loam soil. It’s some of the best ground in our area. We‘ve worked at building our fertility levels up there and were able to plant at a population of 40,000 (seeds/acre).”

Just before his April 10 planting date, Raasch put 200 lb. of anhy-drous on the field with his strip-tillage equipment. To give the crop an immediate boost right after planting, he used 10 gal./acre of 32% nitrogen as a carrier for Guardsman, Max and Sharper herbicides. When the crop tasselled, he flew on Headline Amp. “With all the wet weather this year, fungus was a real problem in our area. The Head-line paid for itself and then some. No doubt about it.”

It was a memorable contest year for Charles Hinkebein. Not only did he place third in this class, his family registered a rare sweep in Ridge-Till Irrigated, taking all three places. With this year’s plac-ings, the family has now doubled the number of awards they’ve received in the national contest since 1988. “We had a very good year overall,” says Hinkebein.

“It was one of the driest years we’ve ever had,” he says. “We had a rain during the second week of May, and then we didn’t see another drop until Sept.1. Ordinarily, we’ll get about 15-18” of rainfall between planting and harvest.”

Hinkebein says a lack of days with extremely high temperatures and hot winds during the dry spell helped keep the corn going. Loca-tion might have been an even bigger factor. “We’re on the backwaters of the Mississippi River. They had a lot of rain up north, in Iowa and northern Missouri, and that raised the river levels. As a result, we had a lot of seep water that kept our water table high. It saved the crop.”

David R. HulaCharles City, Va.

Twists and turns in the weather made achieving a top corn yield this year particularly challenging for David Hula and Renwood

Farms, Inc. “We couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect early on,” says Hula, a frequent first place finisher in the national contest. “We came out of the winter with adequate moisture, and by mid-March, things had dried out and warmed up. After planting, we had near-perfect emergence. I’ve never seen a corn crop come out of the ground as even and uniform as this one did. In early June, I was thinking we were on the way to the best corn crop ever.”

The good fortune came to a screeching halt in mid-June. “It became extremely hot and dry and stayed that way until the end of August. Our non-irrigated corn just burnt up. Even though our contest field was irrigated, we were worried.”

Hula decided to “get extremely aggressive” with his irrigation program. “Whenever the temperatures got above 90 degrees, we focused on trying to help the corn cool down with some additional watering during the heat of the day with our Valley center pivot.”

At the same time, Hula stayed with many of the tried-and-true practices that had led to so much corn-growing success in the past. Over the winter, he applied lime and fertilizer and broadcast pelletized sludge according to soil sample results. In early February, he sprayed the field with Roundup and Sencor. At planting, he used seed treated with Poncho 1250 (for insect control) and Amplify-L. He also applied Trizmet right behind the planter to get a jump on summer annual weeds.

He spoon-fed nutrients to the crop throughout the season, relying on soil test and tissue sampling results. At planting, he laid down a 3” x 2” band of 60-30-0 starter fertilizer that included sulfur, zinc and boron. He also put on 4 gal. of a 3-18-18 pop-up fertilizer through the planter. Micronutrient cocktails went on at V4 and V12. At V5 and V12, he sidedressed nitrogen and sulfur. He applied Headline with a ground rig after the first sidedress. After tasselling, he flew on more Headline and also Baythroid insecticide. “We give the corn every opportunity to be all that it can be under the conditions we’re dealing with,” says Hula. “Once it goes in the ground, it shouldn’t want for anything.”

With his first placement ever in the national contest, 15-year-old Keenan Albracht now qualifies officially as a “chip off the old block” in corn growing circles. From 2006-2009, Keenan’s dad, Steven, racked up four straight first place awards in the contest’s Ridge-Till Irrigated Class. In 2007 and again this year, Steven also captured first place in the Irrigated Class. “He knows how to grow corn,” says Keenan.

Keenan’s hybrid was one that his dad used several times on con-test fields. “It’s a tough corn that no wind can knock down,” he says. “In West Texas, that’s something you always need to consider.”

A wetter than normal growing season allowed Keenan to cut down on the amount of irrigation water he used on the crop. He turned on the sprinklers when corn was in the V-4, V-5 stage and applied enough water to maintain a 6’ moisture profile all the way through to harvest. “This year, we had a lot of rain and snow over the winter, so we didn’t need to pre-water the crop like we normally do,” he says. “For the entire season, we had 18” of rain. That’s a lot for us.”

Corn growing doesn’t always have to be only about work. “We take part in the contest because it’s fun,” says Paul Evans, general manag-er at Ute Mountain Farm & Ranch Enterprise. “We get bragging rights, and our employees like seeing how well they can do each year. They deserve the lion’s share of the credit for any success we have.”

The contest field had been in alfalfa for the previous five years. Fol-lowing the final alfalfa cutting in the fall of 2009, the field was burned down with 2,4-D Banvel. In the spring, Evans’ crew put 55 units of nitrogen and 24 units of phosphorus with their strip tiller.

At planting, they put on a starter fertilizer (51-45-6-9) in a 3” x 2” band. In mid-May, they began irrigating through the sprinklers. Along with 40” of water, they applied additional N through the pivots. Total N applied was 300 lb. “We do what we can to put the pieces together to get a high yield,” says Evans. “But we can only take so much credit. A lot of it is up to Mother Nature.”

The Hardy brothers—Randy and Mark—have placed in this class several times in recent years, but this is the first time

they’ve grabbed the top spot. Their yield of nearly 299 bu./acre is an all-time, personal best. “We’ve been as high as 286 in the past, so we’re getting closer to that 300-bushel mark all the time,” says Randy, who also picked up a second place award in the class. “It doesn’t seem like all that long ago that everyone was aiming for 200 bushels. The genetics are improving so rapidly. Sometimes, it almost makes your head spin.”

An early warm-up allowed the Hardys to get their contest entry into the ground on April 15. This was the first time they used DeKalb DKC 61-06. “We had heard good things about it from the company repre-sentative,” says Randy. “It had a reputation for being a good yielder.”

The Hardys planted at a population of 36,000 seeds/acre. “Typi-cally, we’ll go about 32,000 or 33,000 on our better soils,” says Randy. “But that’s the thing about being in the contest. It gives you a chance to try some things on just a few acres to see if they might

be feasible on your whole farm. I’m not sure just how far we can push popula-tions, though. As much as anything else, the cost of seed might be the limiting factor.”

Randy notes that the seed was treated with Poncho 250 and Amplify D. “With our loam soils, insect pres-sure is always a concern. We’ve had good results.”

Before the crop emerged from the ground, the Hardys sprayed with Harness Xtra and Roundup. When the corn reached the knee-high stage, they made another application of Roundup and also foliar-fed the corn. At the same time, they sidedressed 160 lb. of nitrogren. All told, they applied 210 lb. of nitrogen, 70 lb. of phospho-rous and 120 lb. of potash.

Looking ahead to next year’s contest, Randy and Mark say they aren’t likely to make many changes to their basic corn growing program. “We might do some tissue sampling,” Randy says. “We’ve done a little of it in the past and think it can be worthwhile. It can give you a better idea of what’s going on with the crop and what adjustments you need to make during the season.

“But then again, a lot of getting high yields comes down to picking the right genetics and being fortunate with the weather so you can take advantage of those genetics. This year, it worked for us.”

“You have to do a bunch of things just right to place among the best in the contest,” says Randy Hardy. “But when it’s all said and done, the difference between a winning yield and just a good yield often boils down to weather.”

Favorable conditions in March and April allowed him to get his contest entry in the ground early. “We had great weather early on,” he relates. “We planted this field on April 15, and we thought we’d be done planting all of our corn (960 acres) by the end of April. Usually, we don’t finish up until mid-May.”

Soon after the contest corn was planted, though, the weather turned. “It started raining, and it kept on raining all the way through the middle of May. We had some fields that didn’t do very well at all. This field turned out all right because it drains well. After that wet stretch, the weather straightened out. For the rest of the season, we had plenty of growing degrees and we got the timely rains that are so important. It keeps you humble.”

Chris Santini is doing her part to keep a family tradition alive. This year’s third-place finish marks her fourth trip to the national contest winner’s circle. And Chris’s husband, Sam, is keeping pace. By capturing first place in the A Non-Irrigated Class, he has a matching number of national contest awards to his credit.

The Santinis pay close attention to recommendations made by their local seed company representatives when choosing a hybrid for their contest fields.

In a typical year, they’ll plant 10-12 “new numbers” on their 1,200 acres of corn ground. “I was very impressed by the variety we used on this contest field this year. It was a great corn. It yielded well. It’s also a tall corn. In an area like ours, where we have a lot of deer pressure, that can be a positive,” Chris says.

Sam notes that the Santinis have been ridge-tilling for almost two decades. “It’s a good fit for our clay-loam soil,” he says. “Ev-erything gets held in place and doesn’t wash away.”

Glenda and Charles Hinkebein say they get lots of quizzical looks when they tell other corn growers that applying 3-5 lb. of sugar on their crops is one of the keys to winning contest yields. “A lot of people say it doesn’t make any sense,” says Charles, who notes that the family placed in the national contest four times before. “But it works for us, so we keep doing it.” The Hinkebeins have used the sugar—which is basically the same as table sugar, only finer—on their corn crops for the last 17 years. Hinkebein says that when a corn plant is stressed, the sugar keeps nutrients going to the ear. The stalks aren’t stressed in the process. The sugar also protects the crop from earworms, which can’t digest it.

The sugar is put on the crop three times a year—during a fall herbicide spraying, with a starter fertilizer at planting and during a post-tassel aerial fungicide/insecticide spraying. “Last year, we spent around $10,000 on sugar,” says Hinkebein. “It was worth every penny.”

The Hinkebein family-Charles, his wife, Glenda, and son-in-law, Carl Landewee-will need a new trophy room to hold the awards

they picked up in this year’s contest. Not only did they sweep the top three spots in this class, Charles also grabbed the third-place award in AA No-Till/Strip-Till Non-Irrigated.

All of the Hinkebeins’ contest fields had been planted to soybeans in 2009. Soon after harvest, they flew on Basis herbicide, along with a soil stabilizer. They planted their contest field on April 18 at a population of 35,500 seeds/acre.

Charles Hinkebein was impressed by the performance of the hybrid, one he hadn’t used before. “It was actually a coincidence that we ended up using it this year,” he says. “On the last day of planting, the seed company representative stopped by and said she had eight bags of this one and eight bags of another variety left. We tried them both.

“This one turned out to be exceptional. I’ve never seen a corn like it. It was about 15’ tall, with upright leaves, a very showy

plant. It also had a lot of standability, which is an absolute must for me. I have 100 bags on order for this coming season.”

For a starter fertilizer, Hinkebein put 6 gal./acre of 7-18-18 right on top of the seed. He also applied 1 gal. of Sidekick and 1 lb. of fine sugar at planting.

Hinkebein reports that the crop looked good early on. But then the weather took an unexpected turn. “We had a pretty good rain during the second week of May, but that was it for the next 15 weeks. It was early September before we saw another drop of rain.”

The dry spell meant using more water than normal. “Usually, we’ll water no more than five times during the course of the season,” Hinkebein explains. “This year, we were watering once every four days. We started on June 5 and continued all the way into September. I’ve never seen a year this dry.”

For the season, Hinkebein applied 325 units of nitrogen, 90 units of phosphorous and 65 units of potash. He foliar-fed the crop twice with a mix that included sulfur, boron and manganese. He used Atrazine and Resolve for post-planting weed control and Warrior to control insects. He flew on Headline twice–once around July 15 when the crop was just starting to tassel and again two weeks later.

Regular, frequent scouting is a major part of Charles Hinkebein’s plan for growing high-yielding corn crops. Once the corn is up and growing, he spends 3-4 hours a day, three days a week, in his fields checking on the general condition of the crop and looking for signs of potential insect/disease problems. “I like to get out there well before sunup because that’s when everything is the most active,” he says.

Hinkebein says the most productive scouting requires getting out of the pickup truck and walking the fields. “You’ve got to get right in there with the crop, take a look around and shake the plant leaves to see what falls off,” he says.

Hinkebein also takes to the air, flying over his corn with an airplane four times a year to apply herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. “People tell me I fly too much,” he says. “But it’s a lot more efficient than putting things on with ground rigs. With an airplane, we cover 400 acres a day. We can get everything done at once, rather than spreading it out over several days.”

Steven Albracht keeps right on rolling along. After four straight years of capturing first place honors in the contest’s Ridge-Till

Irrigated Class, he moved over to the Irrigated Class this year and pulled down another top finisher award.

“The contest is all about pushing yourself to do better,” he says. “If you’re going after high yields, you can’t be afraid to try new things.”

Planting at higher populations is one area where Albracht con-tinuously pushes himself. This year, he planted 42,000 seeds/acre on his contest field. “It’s the only way to make high yields,” he says. “If the plants aren’t out there to start with, it isn’t going to happen.”

Albracht also places a premium on putting the right hybrid on the right ground. Soil type for his winning field this year is a silty clay-loam. For a hybrid, he chose Pioneer 31N30. “We’ve used it in the past, and it has always done well for us. In 2007, we made 368 bu./acre with it.”

The contest entry went into the ground on May 1. “That’s a little

on the early side for us, but we figured we needed to get going because we were using a full-season variety,” Albracht says.

As he usually does, Albracht took his time while moving his 16-row, 30” Case IH 1230 planter over the field. “You have to slow down and pay attention to detail,” he says. “I keep my speed at 4.5 mph or slower depending on ground conditions. If you’re going to get big yields, you have to start with a perfect stand. You’re not going to get that if you have skips, gaps and doubles when you’re planting.”

To help get the crop off to a good start, Albracht treated seed with Poncho 250 and Bio-Forge. The insecticide is intended to head off problems with corn rootworm. “It’s a major consideration when you have corn behind corn for so many years,” he says. “We use it on every acre we plant.”

The Bio-Forge helps corn get out of the ground quicker, he says. “Our goal is to get every plant up and growing as soon as possible. That’s where you make big ears. When the corn sits in the ground for a week to 10 days before it comes up, it’s costing you money.”

Albracht flew on Stratego when the crop tasselled. He turned his sprinklers on at the V-6, V-7 stage and continued watering until harvest. Total use was about 29”.

The Wright family—Bill, his wife, Fern, and brother, Don—are in the process of building a dynasty in this class. With this year’s second-place finish, they’ve placed four years in a row, including last year’s first place award.

“Non-eventful” is how Bill describes last year’s growing season weather. “We had a normal amount of rain, and we didn’t have any big windstorms or hail. Sometimes, it’s nice to have a year like that.”

About three weeks ahead of planting, the Wrights pre-watered (flood irrigation) their crop with 3” of water. Three days ahead of planting, they sprayed their crop with Gly Star Plus and Dicamba to get a jump on problem weeds like lambsquarter and red-rooted pigweed. They planted April 19. “We generally wait to plant until the soil temperature warms up to 55 degrees. We want all the plants to come out of the ground on the same day if possible.” They began flood-irrigating the crop June 1, applying 2” of water every 10-14 days until corn reached black layer stage in mid-September. Total water usage was 30”.

Unusual weather provided the backdrop for Tom and Valerie Cartrite’s 2010 growing season. “We had a really wet winter with quite a bit of snow,” says Tom. “We also had a fair number of heavy rains in the spring. It was one of the few times I can remember that we didn’t need to pre-water our corn crop.”

The Cartrites broadcast 2.5 tons of beef feedyard compost on their contest field after harvesting a seed sorghum crop in the fall of 2009. A few weeks ahead of planting, they sprayed with Balance and Atrazine to get ahead of potential weed outbreaks. When the crop was 10” high, they sprayed with Roundup. They planted on May 5 at a population of 36,800 seeds/acre.

With their center pivots, they irrigated lightly through June. In July they used an AquaSpy probe to monitor soil moisture and determine how much water they needed to put on the crop. They figure they used 30” of water for the season. They also ran nitrogen, 32-0-0, onto the field when corn was in the 6-8 leaf, tassel and brown silk stages.

When it comes to gaining an advantage in the fi eld, MartinFamily Farms serves up the latest GreenStar technology.Their tractors are equipped with AutoTrac™ automaticguidance with one-inch RTK accuracy. All their machinesfeature touch-screen, full-color GreenStar displays. Andback at the offi ce they use Apex software to map, plant, harvest, and create custom fi eld prescriptions that will varyseeding and fertilizer rates.

“We do a lot of strip till, continuous corn on our farm,” said

Doug Martin, “and RTK allows us to be more precise withseed and anhydrous placement. This gives us more uniformemergence and more yield, and puts more money in ourpocket.”

Swath Control Pro™, which minimizes skips and overlapswithin spraying, spreading, and nutrient applicationoperations, helps Martin drive down costs even further.

“It’s a big savings,” Martin said, “because you’re not over-applying anhydrous or chemical or seed.”

Martin said the GreenStar solution even cured his tenniselbow. “I got tennis elbow from sitting there holding thesteering wheel in the same place for 3 weeks,” Martin said.

“AutoTrac guidance eliminates issues like this, eases up thefatigue and wear and tear on your body.”

When you use Quadris®, Quilt® and Quilt Xcel™ fungicides, you get the power

of xylem mobility along with Plant Performance™ benefits that maximize yield

and profit potential. The X-Factor jumpstarts your crops’ vitality by moving the

active ingredient azoxystrobin throughout the entire plant to guard against a

broad spectrum of diseases. Combine that with more green leaf area and better

water efficiency, and see your crops stay healthy for a strong finish at harvest.
