At our dinner table a few monthsago, my family and I were dis-cussing what was happening withthe country’s economy. The conver-sation then turned to the city ofNewcastle and I mentioned thecouncil had discussed saving moneyby canceling Newcastle Days thisyear. Our 18-year-old son looked atme and said, “You can’t do that.Newcastle Days are the coolest partof Newcastle. It’s a tradition.”

He was right. Newcastle Days hasbeen a part of our city for 16 years. And this year, thanks to manycommunity members and goodneighbors stepping up to volunteertime and services, we are happy tocontinue the tradition.

We need tradition to rememberour history. Founded in 1869,Newcastle was a coal-mining town. Those coal-mining days are longgone, but our rich history remains. Some of you were with me on thespecial day when this city incorpo-

rated in 1994,and many morehave joined usalong the way. With each of uscomes a sense ofcommunity andpride in callingNewcastle home.

NewcastleDays also cele-brates our future. This year’s cele-bration high-lights our community and demon-strates how a group of neighborsand friends banded together to savea beloved community event. Iwould especially like to thank allthe Newcastle Days Committee vol-unteers: Chairwoman KoleenMorris, Diane Lewis, Suzi O’Byrne,Pam Lee, Sandra Wixon, AngelaWingate, Craig Belcher, DougKunkel and David Harris. Theseindividuals truly went beyond the

A fantastic group of Newcastlevolunteers joined together to orga-nize this year’s Newcastle Days.Due to budget constraints and diffi-cult economic times, the city waslooking for alternate ways to hostthe event.

Recognizing the city’s dilemma, these community-minded individu-als volunteered their time and ener-gy to ensure its continued success.

In the spirit of collaboration, thecommittee worked tirelessly for thepast six months to bring this time-honored tradition to Newcastle.

A big thank you to parks com-missioners Suzie O’Byrne, DianeLewis and Craig Belcher; Pam Lee,from the Historical Society; andAngela Wingate, Sandra Wixon andDoug Kunkle, from the NewcastleChamber of Commerce.

Q: What is a Pediatric Dentist?

Q: Would your child benefit from a specialist?

A: A dentist who has trained two or more years beyond dental school in the particular oral health care of children from infancy through the teenage years.

A: Of course! Pediatric dentists are the “pediatricians” of dentistry. Our focus is prevention, early detection, and treatment of dental disease. Combining expertise and kindness, with a bit of illusion, Dr. McDonald provides a positive and caring approach to dentistry for your child.
