T h i s I s N o t r e D a m e C o l l e g e

Notre Dame College sits on 50 picturesque, wooded acres, tucked away in South Euclid, a quiet suburban neighborhood just 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland.

The Sisters of Notre Dame founded Notre Dame College in 1922 as a Catholic, four-year liberal arts institution for women. Over the years, Notre Dame always embraced the challenge of adapting to the changing needs of its students and the College has seen many changes. In 2001, NDC admitted men, paving the way for continuous growth of the college through the addition of the new academic programs and an expansion of athletic programs. Since 2001, enrollment has risen to a record high of nearly 1,900 students.

This growth can be attributed to the College’s career-oriented liberal arts programs that help students succeed in the real world. Notre Dame offers bachelor’s degrees in 29 majors, with interdisciplinary programs and self-designed majors and exceptional programs in education, business and science.

Above all, the College strives to provide a mission-focused, values-based, private Catholic education to students who might otherwise not have access to such an experience. The NDC mission is to be faithful to the College’s Catholic heritage and identity. It is to be faithful to the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame, who sought to provide a student-centered education characterized by excellence.

Notre Dame’s beautiful campus provides a perfect setting for serving that mission. The defining feature of NDC campus is the gothic tower atop the Administration Building. That building houses classrooms and offices and is the hub of a campus that includes:

• The Connelly Center --a dining hall and student center

• The Keller Center --a recreational and fitness facility with a gymnasium and swimming pool

• The Clara Fitzsche Library

• The Falcon Café --a café and apparel shop

• Three athletic fields, a softball diamond, and a student activities quad with beach volleyball and bocci

• Five residence halls, including two brand-new apartment-style facilities for upper class students

A variety of clubs and activities enrich the experience of the College’s 650 on-campus resident students. A Campus Ministry program promotes the spiritual growth of the Notre Dame College community and facilitates community service, retreats and liturgy. Faculty members and students frequently schedule and

coordinate lectures, plays, performances and concerts.

These facilities and activities --and the people that serve the College and its students --help make Notre Dame one of the finest, small Catholic baccalaureate colleges in the Great Lakes region.

Inaugurated in November, 2003, Dr. Roth is the 13th president of Notre Dame College. Under his leadership, the College began a “Voyage of Discover,” defining he future of Notre Dame for the next generation of college leaders. Ultimately, Dr. Roth foresees Notre Dame as one of the finest, small Catholic baccalaureate colleges in the Great Lakes region.

In the intervening years, Dr. Roth has decisively moved the College toward achieving this vision. He restructured the admissions operation and financial aid process resulting in record enrollment every year since 2003. He has introduced major improvements to campus facilities in order to enhance the educational experience for NDC students.

In 2008, despite challenging economic times, the College began the most extensive series of on-campus construction projects in recent history. Ten new classrooms, 12 new faculty offices and new facilities for the Nursing Program were built. In addition, Christ the king Chapel was completely renewed and the Connelly Center Dining Hall dramatically renovated. The growth of Notre Dame’s student population necessitated the construction of two new residence halls -- North Hall and South Hall.

Under his leadership, Notre Dame has made strides to expand academic opportunities for students. The College initiated new programs, including the Intelligence Analysis and Research Program (IARP), Criminal Justice, and a fully-accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. In fall 2008, Dr. Roth began the “Books That Changed the World” seminar series, a great books program for professional and civic leaders. Tenured in three different disciplines at his previous institution, Dr. Roth himself regularly teaches an undergraduate course, viewing himself as “a faculty member and teacher first.”

A native of Canton, Ohio, Dr. Roth is committed to expanding the role of Notre Dame as a member of the Northeast Ohio community. He previously served as an administrator and tenured faculty member at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. His long and accomplished career has encompassed finance, marketing, strategic planning, educational leadership and public policy.

Dr. Roth has been widely published on the topic of higher education recruitment and retention. He has delivered numerous papers and presentations on the variety of topics including strategic planning, he economics and history of the oil industry, administrative ethics, the impact of mass media on contemporary culture, and higher education finance and public policy. In 2001, he published College Savings and the Tax Code: A New Spin On The “Who Pays for Higher Education” Debate (NY: Garland Publishing, 2001), which the Review of Higher Education called “a major contribution to the literature of higher education finance.”

A self-described “lifelong learner,” Dr. Roth has a doctorate in Public Policy and Higher Education Finance from the State University of New York at Buffalo, an MBA from Gannon University, an MA from Case Western Reserve University, and a BA from John Carroll University.

Dr. Roth is married to Judy Roth, a retired banking executive, and has three children and four grandchildren.

Sue Hlavacek came to Notre Dame College in 1998, bringing with her many years of experience as an administrator, coach, mentor and teacher.

A native of Cleveland, Hlavacek a standout in basketball and volleyball player at Cleveland State University from 1977-1980. In both sports she was a First Team All-Ohio performer and was three times named the Vikings’ Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year. In basketball, Hlavacek was voted CSU’s Most Valuable Player in each of her for years with the program. Her

long list of accolades was capped off in 1991, when she became the first woman to be inducted into the Cleveland State athletic hall of fame.

After graduating from CSU in 1980, Hlavacek was drafted by the Philadelphia Fox of the Women’s Basketball League (WBL), the first women’s professional basketball league in the United States. After playing in Philadelphia, Hlavacek returned home to Cleveland where she began what would be a 13-year coaching and teaching career at two Cleveland-area schools. At the second of those schools, Laurel School, Hlavacek moved up to the position of department chair for physical education and then to director of athletics.

Hlavacek left Laurel to become the director of athletics at Notre Dame in 1998. At the Time, NDC had four athletic teams. Since then, Falcon Athletics have grown to include 23 varsity teams, second most among 53 colleges and universities in the state of Ohio. The expansion during Hlavacek’s tenure at Notre Dame has not just been a quantitave one; Falcon student-athletes succeeded in the community, the classroom, and on the field of play.

Hlavacek has directed efforts to engage in community partnerships with the City of South Euclid, home of NDC’s campus, as well as with the Greater Cleveland community. Falcon teams have participated in charitable functions on and off campus and have been at the forefront of projects such as South Euclid’s Playground of Possibilities, an initiative designed to reinvigorate the city’s neighborhood parks. For their work in the classroom, Notre Dame student-athletes have earned 87 scholar-athlete awards.

Additionally, Notre Dame has become a consistent force on the field. Hlavacek’s tenure has included a national championship in Wrestling (2010) as well as five conference championships and 10 division titles. Four athletes have earned conference player of the year awards, and NDC coaches have garnered nine conference coach of the year honors. Since 1998, the NAIA has recognized 52 Notre Dame student-athletes as members of the All-America teams.

In an all-sports ranking called the NAIA Director’s Cup, Notre Dame has gone from being ranked among the bottom-50 of the 300 NAIA institutions to consistent rankings in the Top-50 in recent years.

Hlavacek’s leadership has been recognized multiple times over the years. She has twice been named the AD of the Year (2004,2010) by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Hlavacek has also been named he Administrator of the Year twice (2003, 2010) by National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) in 2003. She was also selected to serve on the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four Committee in 2007

Since 2008, Hlavacek has been shepherding the College’s athletic programs into a new phase of their existence, a period adding Football and transitioning the College into new conference and national affiliations -- in 2009, the College had a membership application approved and in 2010-11 its athletic teams are competing as a Year-Two Candidate in the NCAA Division II membership process.

Looking back at ten years with

Coach Mac...

2001200120012001

October 16, Ohio Dominican, W 3-2, South Euclid, Ohio

Obviously this was a season of firsts. I could write a book about this season alone. This team was special in many ways. We were beyond being an underdog. We were a new team - thrown into to the largest soccer conference in the country. If there was one game that summed up the spirit within the 2001 team it would have to be the home victory over Ohio Dominican. Ohio Dominican was the reigning conference champion.

The lads played out of their skins that day and we won 3-2!

2002200220022002

November 2, Geneva (Pa.), W 4-1, South Euclid, Ohio

Our second season was a dream. The lads had grown in confidence and we had also managed to attract some very talented players to NDC. This gave us an opportunity to play for a conference championship. The lads didn’t disappoint and they beat Geneva College in front of a home crowd to bring home our first ever championship trophy.

2003200320032003

November 8, Cedarville, W 1-0, Lyndhurst, Ohio;

AMC Tournament

Expectations were high for the 2003 season and once again the lads produced the goods. After completing another successful conference season the lads went one better by qualifying for the Region IX Tournament. They did this by beating a talented Cedarville University

team at Brush High School’s Korb Field in front of a large home crowd.

2004200420042004

October 8, Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.), W 2-1 2OT, Rochester, N.Y.

Roberts Wesleyan away, it’s always an adventure. This time we forgot our kit so a car-load of Second Team players drove our kit all the way to Rochester, N.Y. for us! Andy Gray’s dad had driven 10 hours from Sault Saint Marie, Canada to watch the game. “Graytrain” made the trip worthwhile for his dad by scoring the game-winner in overtime.

November 12, Rio Grande, L 0-4, Rio Grande, Ohio

NAIA Regional Tournament

We had won the North Division and made it through to Regional Tournament Final – we were 90 minutes away from an appearance at the NAIA National Tournament. We lost the final but the coaches knew that we had a chance at an at-large bid. We left Rio and drove our bus to Marietta. I told the boys we had to wait for a phone call from the NAIA and that we were either heading North (to Cleveland) or South (to Florida). I didn’t think the phone would ever ring. We were sat at a petrol station for what seemed like an eternity. At 11pm I got the call and then told the players “we’re heading South, lads!” Needless to say they went ballistic.

November 18, Simon Fraser (B.C.), W 2-1 OT, Daytona Beach, Fla.

NAIA National Championship Tournament

We were literally rank outsiders when we arrived in Daytona Beach, Florida. We had been drawn to play the fifth-ranked team in the country. We changed to a 4-5-1 and got the result that took us to the Elite Eight. Words can’t describe the feeling that day; I nearly smiled. We bowed out 1-0 to fourth-ranked Southern Nazarene in the next round but every senior player was on the pitch when the final whistle went. It was a great to see. Our squad turned to Southern Nazarene and clapped them off the field. It was a proud moment – teams don’t do that at the national tournament. The lads’ sportsmanship was later recognized by being named the recipient of the Nels Dalquist award for sportsmanship.

November 4, Daemen, L 1-2, Lyndhurst, Ohio; Gilmore Academy

AMC Tournament Qualifier

With all of our successes in our previous seasons 2006 was a year that grounded us all. We managed to retain the AMC North Championship but we fell short of making the regional final. The Daemen game was a memorable one because it was a game in which we were seen as the hot favorite but we lost. It was an impressive upset. Although we lost I think we all recognized the efforts of the Daemen players and staff that day. We clapped them off the field – they were worthy victors. Games like that are why we all play the game.

2007200720072007

September 19, Cleveland State, W 4-1, Cleveland, Ohio.

This was the season we got to play our NCAA Division I neighbor, Cleveland State. Many of our players had grown up playing on the same club teams as the CSU players so this made for ‘big’ game. There was a sizeable crowd at CSU’s Krenzler Field that night. Our boys put in a great performance and shocked plenty of the crowd. It was a fine win over a larger school. Watching Stevie Kane score from over 40yards for the 4th goal was incredible.

2008200820082008

October 25, Rio Grande, W 2-1 OT, Lyndhurst, Ohio

This was the first season the AMC had come together as a single conference since 2001. Rio had won the south the most times in that period and we had achieved the same in the north. For the first time ever we got to host Rio. It was a cracker of a game, it had the lot. Ultimately we won it in overtime – Korb Field went nuts. Lots of Alum were there for that one, and it ranks as one of the most special victories

2008...CONT2008...CONT2008...CONT2008...CONT

November 22, Judson (Ill.), W 6-1 OT, Lyndhurst, Ohio

NAIA National Championship Tournament

Our second appearance in a national tournament saw us host a perennial national powerhouse Judson University. It was late November and in true Cleveland fashion we had been hit with a blizzard 48 hours before KO. There was no way on the morning of the match that the game was going to go ahead. What transpired was awe-inspiring. We sent out a message to our alum and to the student-athletes at NDC to come and help clear the field. They came in their droves, men’s baseball, and our alum, some of the women’s soccer team and a variety of other NDC students. Even Sue Hlavacek (Athletic Director) and Becky Barger (Student Activities) were both shoveling snow. The game went ahead and the rest is history.

2009200920092009

September 12, Concordia, W 5-2, Mobile, Alabama

We had just come off a 2-1 defeat to fifth-ranked Azusa Pacific at the University of Mobile tournament and had the prospect of facing second-ranked Concordia, California the very next day. The boys put in a performance that had the whole of the NAIA talking. It was a sublime performance that served to reveal the inner strength of the 2009 team. It was a whopper of a result.

December 1, Benedictine, W 3-1, Fresno, California

NAIA National Championship Tournament

Having bowed out in the Round of 16 in 2008; the team was determined to stick around in Fresno a little bit longer in 2010. The performance was as dominant a performance as any team put in during the 2009 NAIA National Championship. It was a complete game from the boys, we looked like we belonged. It showed just how far we had come in nine seasons.

young, and likely don't think too deeply about any such things, it’s not a

reflection of intelligence, perhaps it’s because we can't see into the

future. Neither can I, but we can all look back on the past, dream of

another chance, wonder what might have been, yet all that remains is

what you did and did not do. ”

Notre Dame Men’s Soccer

What position are you going to be watching the closest starting the season? At the moment right back is up for grabs, but from front to back there is competition for spots. We have a sizable group of second year players who will be looking to break into the starting XI. The competition will be fierce.

What is one thing the team gained from last year that will be a benefit this season? I hope that the pain of defeat to Masters in the quarter finals will spur the lads on to greater things.

What are some specific areas that you are looking to improve on this season over last? Fan support! This is an area that we are working on diligently. For as well as the team has done over the years we really need to give them an audience to showcase their talents to.

From a soccer standpoint, we’d like to shore up the back a bit. We were very attack-minded last season, we scored plenty but let nearly a goal a game in. To be successful we need to keep more clean sheets.

With only five matches at home this year, do you think it will help or hurt your goal of more fan support? Five home games is actually about where we are every year. I think statistically (all-time) we are about 30% home and 70% away. I’m confident we will have our highest ever average attendance this year because of the people that are actively promoting the program in the community. With it being our tenth season, it really does make it a little special. Special for us and special for the NDC community.

What does this year’s newcomers add to the team? Fresh enthusiasm, new opinions, some naivety and a lot of talent.

What do this year’s seniors provide to a team that is relatively young? If they perform the way they have for the past three seasons then I’ll be more than happy with them. I expect the same from a first-year as I do from a lad who is in his fourth season.

Having lost a number of players that played important roles on the team, how do you look to replace them? We can’t replace some of the intangibles the old lads gave us. It’s more than being a good player. We can put a new player in an old shirt, but we can’t truly replace the lads we lost. We reinvent ourselves almost every season.

Looking at the roster, which position do you feel is the strongest, and why? There is a lot of talent in this squad. There are a number of players who can play multiple positions, so it remains to be seen what our strongest position will be. However, we have the most competition for our right hand side, so that may well become one of our strengths as the season progresses.

2 010 P r e v i e w Q & A w i t h C o a c h M c B r i d e

Talk about opening the season on the road against Spring Arbor (MI), Grace (IN), and Iowa Wesleyan, three brand new opponents. Even though Spring Arbor and Grace are new opponents, the fact that they have been invited to attend the University of Rio Grande Tournament tells us all we need to know about them. They will be quality opponents and will be a tough test to start the season with. Iowa Wesleyan’s keeper made the NPSL All-Star Team this summer, which is an impressive feat. I think that speaks to the quality of player Wesleyan attracts to its program.

Talk about your early season travels and what you hope to gain from it. Historically we have used the early part of the season to blood the new players to get them true college experience.

Who do you think will be the teams to beat in the AMC this year, and why? The beauty of the AMC is that it’s wide open. There are a number of teams that could win it, but I’d be surprised to see one team run the table. The parity makes for entertaining matches.

How do you think the squad will stack up against the other AMC powers this year? We’ll probably field the youngest team in the AMC this year, but we hope to stay competitive.

Going into your tenth season how do you feel about the program at this point and what do you envision in the coming seasons? We’re pleased with the progress that has been made since the program was started. However, we have a couple of significant goals we have yet to reach.
