2 With seven upper classmen on a Park University women’s soccer roster of 19 players, youth must produce for the Pirates to be successful in the

2010 season. The Pirates will look to build on a 2009 season that saw Park outscore its opponents 65-10. However, Park did not reach a conference tournament championship for the first time under head coach Ken Hefner, and the Pirates finished in third place in the conference with just six league wins and 10 overall victo-ries. Park shutout its first five opponents in 2009, and five games went into overtime. “Our main goal will always be to be conference champions,” Hefner said, leading into the 2010 season. “This is the first step in post season play. I do not think we failed greatly last year. We just did not have the continuity all year long. We will need to be more focused on winning this year. The games we lost last year were one-goal games. That is just a matter of forc-ing your will on your opponent. I expect us to go out this year and force our will for 90 minutes, not just 60 minutes. I expect us to be in the conference championship game.” Four seniors and three juniors make up the seven-member group of upperclassmen, of which just six are returners from the 2009 roster. The lone newcomer in the junior class, Chelsie Shepard, comes to Park from Johnson County Community College, where she helped the Cavaliers to a national tournament appear-ance in 2009. The two returning juniors – Ashley Max-well and Nori Gedei – were responsible for a chunk of Park’s offense in both the 2008 and 2009 seasons, with Maxwell leading the team in scoring during both her freshman and sophomore campaigns. As a freshman in 2008, Maxwell scored 13

goals and distributed three assists on the way to a Third-Team NAIA All-American designation, and in 2009, she was the leading scorer in the American Midwest Confer-ence, finding the back of the net 16 times with four assists to earn honorable mention all-conference honors in the AMC. Gedei has five goals and seven assists over the

last two seasons, bringing the scoring total for the ju-nior class to 34 goals and 14 assists in the last

two seasons. Park’s seniors are headlined by a staple between the posts over the last three sea-sons, as goalkeeper Monika Stoiber returns to the Pirate lineup with a career record of 21-12-4 in 41 games and 36 starts in the net for Park. Stoiber recorded all 10 wins for the

Pirates last season and nearly doubled her career saves total, stopping 60 shots to make 127 in her three-year goalkeeping career. She has played more

than 3,500 minutes for the Pirates with a goals-against average of 0.98, surrendering a career-low 10 scores to opponents with 11 shutouts in the 2009 season. A freshman will back up Stoiber, as Ellen Ghi-

rardi joins the Park roster in 2010 with ties to the Amer-ican Midwest Conference. Ghirardi’s sister, Chrissy, is

a goalkeeper for McKendree University, the 2009 AMC regular-season women’s soccer champion. Ghirardi is a product of O’Fallon, Mo., in the St. Louis area. Another St. Louis-area product, senior Lisa Buz-zotta, has provided the top offensive totals in the 2010 senior class, having her best season in a Pirate uniform

as a junior with four goals and an assist, bringing her ca-reer total to seven scores. In her three years, Buzzotta has eight assists, distributing the ball for five assists as a sophomore. The Pirates also expect contributions from senior midfielder Emilia Sheffer and senior defender Samantha Gross in the 2010 sea-son. Park’s sophomore class must complement its junior and senior

teammates in the 2010 season, with a position change headlining the Pirates’ second-year players in the form of Dana Hemming-sen, who will move from the midfield to forward in 2010. Hem-mingsen scored six goals with four assists last year, and her twin sister, Nichole, scored twice with one assist in her freshman sea-son. Nichole Hemmingsen will remain in the midfield in 2010. Melanie Brewer returns to the Pirates after a successful de-fensive showing in 2009, playing key roles in the team’s 11 shut-outs and 10-goal count by opponents. Brewer will step into one of the team’s lead defensive roles this season after the departure of 2009 starters Aliesha Cassie and Kitti Katona. Katona will remain with the program in 2010 as an assistant coach. Sophomore J’vonnelle Simpson is also expected to help the defense in 2010, while sophomore forward Juneille Watkins re-turns after an all-conference campaign in 2009, posting 10 goals and three assists in her first year in a Pirate uniform. A pair of Johnson County freshmen and three Swedish players complete the Park roster in 2010, as both Haylee Allen and Cara Lightle have joined the squad from Shawnee Mission Northwest, while Linn Westerdahl, Anna Malmen and Madeline Sund will get their first taste of American soccer after successful youth cam-paigns in Sweden. “There’s no doubt we need to determine who our leaders are early,” Hefner said. “And it doesn’t just come from the returners. They need to take the responsibility, but the newcomers are here for a reason. I want the newcomers to put pressure on the return-ers, and late in the year, I expect them all to play like veterans. Re-lationships play such an important part in the team and the game they play so the earlier we can conquer those hurdles, the better the team will be, and the more you can do with the team earlier.”

Park University is a second-year member in the American Midwest Conference, joining in the 2009-10 school year, rejoining the league after nine years of membership in the

MCAC and as an NAIA Independent in basketball. Park previously held membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. “This is a great partnership for Park University and the AMC,” said Park University Director of Athletics, Claude English. “In the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics, it is important to have strong alliances within a conference for all of our athletic programs. The AMC gives us one unified conference home for our programs, and it also provides a familiarity with our past history in the league.” Park is one of nine AMC member institutions, joining Columbia College, Hannibal-LaGrange College, Harris-Stowe State Univer-sity, McKendree University, Missouri Baptist University, Stephens College, William Woods University and Williams Baptist College. “The AMC looks forward to Park University rejoining the con-ference, and we know that Park will bring a lot to our league in the way of sponsored teams and quality conference competition,” Lowell Pitzer, AMC Commissioner, said. “Park’s location and proximity to the NAIA National Head-quarters will also provide a boost for our conference. This was a unanimous decision by our executive committee, and we are excited for Park to come in next year.” The AMC sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soc-cer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to pro-mote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athlet-ics in an academic environment. The American Midwest Conference also compiles a Presi-dents Cup, where schools earn points for conference finishes in all sports. McKendree captured the 2009-10 President’s Cup. Park finished fourth in the 2009-10 standings.

Ken Hefner enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Park University women’s soccer program, entering the season with a mark of 60-28-9 at Park, while his overall

record, including 29 wins as a men’s head coach, is 213-161-18. During the 2009 season, Hefner’s Pirates were within striking distance of an American Midwest Conference title throughout the regular season, scoring 63 goals on the year while using a smoth-ering defense that held opponents to just 10 scores on the year. Hefner guided the Pirates to 10 wins in 2009, marking the 20th winning season in 22 years of women’s soccer at Park. It was also the 19th season with at least 10 wins in the 22-year history of Park’s women’s soccer program. The 2009 season was also the fifth-straight under Hefner that saw the Pirates qualify for the postseason, ending the year in the 2010 American Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals at Missouri Baptist. Hefner led the Pirates to their eighth NAIA tournament appear-ance in 2008, earning an opening-round draw before advancing to the second round and final site on penalty kicks at Dordt College. Park finished the year with a 14-2-3 record, losing to NAIA na-tional champion Lee University in Daytona Beach, Fla. Park also claimed its third-straight MCAC regular-season champion-ship and fourth in the last five years, capping the con-ference season with a second-straight MCAC tourna-ment championship at Julian Field. At the conclusion of the 2008 season, Hefner gathered a pair of honors, being named NSCAA/adi-das NAIA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, as well as MCAC Co-Coach of the Year. He also coached nine all-conference players in 2008, two of which went on to be named NAIA All-Americans. Hefner had the Pirates within one win of a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., and the NAIA tournament in the 2007 season, but a loss to Kansas Wesleyan in the Region IV final ended the season at 12-5-2. The Pi-rates were MCAC regular-season tri-champions and MCAC tournament champions, while also produc-ing an honorable mention All-American during the year. In 2006, Hefner led the Pirates to a regular season MCAC championship, going 5-0 in conference play. Park dropped the tourna-ment final to Bellevue, 1-0 but beat Kan-sas Wesleyan in the Region IV Tourna-ment, advancing to the school’s fifth consecutive appearance at the NAIA National Tournament. Hefner led the women past College of the South-west in Round One but then fell to No. 4 Houghton College out of New York in Round Two. Hefner was honored as the Region IV Coach of the Year and MCAC Co-Coach of the Year.

Hefner ranks as the eighth winningest coaches in NAIA his-tory, owning 174 ca-reer women’s wins in two seasons at Park, seven seasons at Lindsey Wilson Col-lege (1993-1999) and three seasons at Tennessee Wesleyan College (1990-93). Addi-tionally, Hefner posted 19 wins as the head coach at NCAA Divi-sion I Arkansas State, helping his career coaching wins total to eighth all-time among NAIA women’s coaches. He also has 29 men’s wins from his time at Tennessee Wes-leyan to push his overall career total to 189 wins. While at Lindsey Wilson, Hefner’s teams advanced to the na-tional tournament twice (1998, 1999) and achieved a final national ranking of fifth following the 1999 season. In seven seasons at Lindsey Wilson, he posted a 93-46-5 record and had 11 players earn NAIA All-America honors. In 1999, Hefner was tabbed to lead a start-up soccer program

at Arkansas State, which began play in 2000. His teams quali-fied for the Sun Belt Conference tournament four years in

a row under his guidance and had three players named to the all-conference team from 2000-2003. In addition to Hefner’s success on the field, his players have enjoyed success in the classroom. At Lindsey Wilson, he had 18 academic all-conference selections and eight NAIA Scholar-Athletes. During his time at Arkansas State, his team owned an overall GPA of 3.0 or better in six of seven semesters while he was at ASU.

Hefner has guided the women’s soccer program to three-straight NAIA Scholar Team

designations, and eight players have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes during his tenure at Park University. He has also coached second- and third-team NAIA All-Americans while at Park, with a handful of players also earning NAIA Honorable Mention All-America designations. In 2009, Hefner’s program had five all-conference honorees and

eight academic all-conference designa-tions. Hefner, who owns a United States Soccer Federation National “B” License, an Advanced National License and an NSCAA National Diploma, earned a bachelor of arts in psychology from West Georgia College in 1987. He and his wife,

Dawn, have three children, Matthew (24), Megan (23) and Mackenzie (19).

2010-11 PIRATE CLUB MEMBERS

Kitti Katona begins her first season as an assistant coach in the program she helped build into a defensive power,

moving to the Park sideline after four years as a starting defender for the Pirates between

2005 and 2009. Katona began her playing career at Park in 2005, earning 20 starts and scoring three of her five career goals as a freshman. In the 2006 season, her second in a Pirate uniform, she helped orchestrate one of the nation’s top defensive turnarounds, as the Park defense held opponents to just 10 goals after allowing 39 in 2005, her freshman season. She sat out with a knee injury in 2007, but bounced back in 2008, again anchoring a defense that held opponents to less than 20 goals, giving up 17 on the year. She also scored her fourth career goal during the 2008 campaign and helped the Pirates ad-vance to the 2008 NAIA national tournament, marking her third appearance on the NAIA’s national stage in her four years on the field. In her senior season, 2009, the Pirates allowed 10 goals and compiled another 10 wins, falling in the second round of the 2009 AMC tournament to Missouri Baptist. She also scored her fifth career goal in 2009, ending her playing career with five goals and two assists, taking 24 shots and putting 10 shots on goal. Katona played and started in 11 games during her injury-shortened senior season, bringing her career totals to 71 games played with 70 starts in a Pirate uniform. She graduated in May with a degree in international business and is currently attending graduate school at Park University.

2009 SEASON NOTES• The 2009 season was the 19th in Park University’s 22-year women’s soccer history that saw the Pirates reach at least 10 wins and it was the 20th winning season since Park began women’s soccer in 1988. The Pirates missed the NAIA tournament, but did qualify for postsea-son play, making the conference semifinals for the fourth-consecutive year under head coach Ken Hefner.

• Park notched another All-American distinction in 2009, as Natalie Parker added Honorable Mention NAIA All-American to a resume that included her First-Team All-Conference honor in 2009. Parker was also a National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America Student-Athlete. In addition to Parker, four other Park women’s soccer players were named all-confer-ence honorees in the AMC, including first-team selections Aliesha Cassie and Juneille Watkins. Ashley Maxwell and Kitti Katona were named All-AMC Honorable Mention.

• Park had three Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, including first-time honorees Emilia Shef-fer and Samantha Gross, as well as Angelica Tovar, who earned the NAIA’s highest academic honor for a second season. Eight women’s soccer players represented Park as academic all-conference honorees, including Shea Brazill, Ivy Chapin, Nori Gedei, Samantha Gross, Natalie Parker, Emilia Sheffer, Monika Stoiber and Angelica Tovar.

• Park started the year with five-straight shutouts, going 4-0-1 in the stretch of games, and on the year, the Pirates gave up just 10 goals to rank 14th all-time in the NAIA for fewest goals al-lowed. The mark also placed goalkeeper Monika Stoiber at 16th all-time in the NAIA for fewest goals allowed by a goalkeeper. Stoiber’s goals-against average finished at 0.54, which is tied for 20th all-time in the NAIA’s single-season records. Stoiber started all 18 games between the pipes for Park, anchoring a defense that pitched 11 shut-outs and helped the Pirates outscore opponents 63-11.

• The Pirates established a new program record for goals in a game on Oct. 3 against Harris-Stowe State University, finding the back of the net 19 times, tying for seventh all-time in the NAIA for goals in a game. Park also had 10 assists in the game, which tied a program record, and Nov. 6 in the AMC tournament, the Pirates beat HSSU 14-0, setting a new school record for postseason goals in a single game. Park also beat HSSU 10-0 during the regular season in St. Louis, outscoring the Hornets 43-0 on the year.

• Ashley Maxwell led the team for a second-straight season in scoring, netting 16 goals on the year to move her career total to 29. She also had four assists, marking seven career assists as a Pirate with 65 career points. Natalie Parker (12 goals, four assists) and Juneille Watkins (10 goals, three assists) each topped 10 goals and 20 points for the year, as Parker finished her Pirate career with 29 goals and 24 assists (82 points).

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offering students the features

of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athlet-ics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Mis-souri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportu-nities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is lo-cally referred to as “north of the river.” Con-tained wholly within Missouri, it encom-passes portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kan-

sas City and Gladstone. Kansas City is situated at the conflu-ence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its bar-becue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kan-sas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kan-sas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Ex-plorers of World Team Tennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experi-ence, which includes the College Basket-ball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buf-falo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball Tournament. In 2010, Park University

made its second appearance in four sea-sons and its fourth overall appearances in the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, beat-ing Georgetown (Ky.) College in the first round, 83-75, before falling to Biola (Calif.) University in the second round. Addition-ally, the National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its his-toric shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

BEST VALUE, NATIONWIDE Park University has been named as the top ranked value among private colleg-es and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. Park was ranked No. 1 in the category “Top 10 Best Value Private Colleges and Universities.” According to Parents & Colleges, insti-

tutions included on this list offer a diversity of degrees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for this incom-ing class. Park was cited as offering “both proximity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town. The 2,000-strong undergraduate stu-dent body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a fraction of other private institutions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”

CLAUDE W. ENGLISHDiRECTOR OF ATHLETiCS • 15TH yEAR

Claude English is in his 15th year as Park Universi-ty’s Director of Athletics, serving in the role since January of 1996.

Prior to 2010-11, English was honored for his ser-vice as an athletics administrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, June 23, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif., representing the NAIA in a group of seven individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation supports the John McLendon Memo-rial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and is presented to senior-level minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. English was joined in the 2010 McLendon Hall of Fame induction class by Percy Bates, Bernie Bickerstaff, Howard Gentry, Sr., Michael Haynes, Rafer Johnson and Don New-combe, while a second group of Pioneer Award winners was also honored. That group included Wisconsin AD Barry Al-varez, Ernie Davis, Mike Garrett, Tom Goss, Dan Guerrero, Charles Harris, Tommy Hawkins, Kim Ng, Fritz Pollard, Burl Toler and Tyrone Willingham. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 campaign. For his final 10 seasons at the helm of the Park men’s basketball program, English also assumed the duties of Director of Athletics, a position he will continue into his 15th year in the 2010-11 aca-demic year. During his tenure as Park’s Director of Athletics, English has guided the addition of two spring sports – baseball and women’s golf – in addition to facility upgrades throughout the department of athletics. Park’s facility upgrades under English’s watch be-gan with the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, followed by the 1,200-seat Breckon Sports Center, constructed in 2000 to become the home of Park University’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as its men’s and women’s volleyball programs. Breckon Sports Center houses administrative offices and two domes – one for competition and one for practice. Recent upgrades to Park’s softball and baseball facilities have also come under English’s watch, including new dugouts at the Park University Softball Complex, as well as new bleachers and

game-scoring facilities at Comfort Field, the home of Park University baseball. English is the winningest coach in Park University men’s basketball history, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was high-

lighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Divi-sion I Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal

round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil

S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team rec-ognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hart-ford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadel-phia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hart-ford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 47 conference championships, and in each of his 14 previous seasons as athletics

direc- tor, at least one Park program has advanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 77 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, and 161 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park University’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better.

The facility also includes full-service restrooms and a fully stocked concession stand, as well as a picnic area between the south goal and the concession facilities. A new scoreboard was installed at Julian Field prior to the 2007 season, containing LED bulbs for easy viewing during both day and night games. In the southwest corner of the stadium, a plaque honors three members of the Park University family killed in an automobile ac-cident in 2000, returning from postseason play in the St. Louis area. The 2010 season marks the 10-year anniversary of the acci-dent, which forever changed the Park University women’s soccer program. Prior to the 2010 season, Julian Field hosted the world’s most popular soccer franchise, as Manchester United held a youth clin-ic for 48 Kansas City area youth soccer players prior to the club’s game against the Kansas City Wizards.
