SPECTATORS GUIDE ON HOW TO WATCH THE RACEMaui’s World Championship XTERRA course is a classic and covers 27 miles of unyielding terrain. The experience is asensory riot – crystal clear Pacific waters, fragrant breezes, bright sun, fine volcanic dust, needle-like kiawe thorns, softwhite sand, cool green lawns, and lava rock of every shape, color, and size.

Start and Swim: Located at the beach fronting the Makena Beach & Golf Resort, there are plenty of great vantagepoints to watch the mass start from the lawn above. Pros are easy to spot with their identifying swim caps - men in blueand women in pink. A short beach shuffle mid-race between two 750-meter laps of a triangular course gives spectatorsa chance to pick out their friends and family from the field.

T1 and T2 - Bike and Run Transition: Located a few yards from the swim start in a big grassy area at the lobby levelof the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. The transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view thechange-over from any position around the boundary.

Bike: The bike course is not open to the public and cannot be pre-ridden by competitors.

Run: Most of the run course is also on private lands and closed to the public with the exception of a long, leg-burningsection of sand at Makena Beach, aka “Big Beach”.

Finish: The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is the place to be for both transitions, the finish, and live race reports. There’sfood booths, the Paul Mitchell cut-a-thon, XTERRA Gear shop, the Kona Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounge, and a front rowseat to one of the greatest spectacles in all of sport - the spontaneous, ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays ofemotion at the finish line.

Friends, Family and fans that are not able to attend the race can get live updates on the internet at www.xterramaui.comstarting at 9am Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3pm EST, 9pm in Europe, 5am in Sydney, Australia, 8am in New Zealand,4pm in Brazil).

The Makena Beach & Golf Resort (808-874-1111)

There are few places left in Hawaii where you can stroll along quiet stretches ofsand, see waves splash on ancient, storied shores and feel what the Hawaiianscall the mana, or spirit of the land. One such place is Makena on Maui's south-western coast, home of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort.

The Resort is secluded on 1800 acres, between a perfect crescent beach andthe dramatic slopes of Mount Haleakala. A true Aloha experience, the Resortwelcomes you with everything you desire for your Hawaiian visit. SparklingPacific views from every guest room. A pristine beach. Spectacular golf. Plusoceanside recreation and enticing dining options.

Designed for relaxation, the Resort surrounds an Asian meditation garden withstone paths, waterfalls and streams swimming with brilliant multi-colored carp. You'll feel the serenity from the moment you arrive, when a lei of seashells isdraped over your shoulders and you're welcomed with the genuine smiles andwarm attention of the staff.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONMaui’s XTERRA course is legendary, and conditions change radically from year-to-year, diminishing the advantage torepeat competitors and perpetuating the course's stature as the most intimidating in the series. Hawaii’s naturalobstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth and for the 500+ athletes racing in Maui – the XTERRA WorldChampionship is a truly unique experience. The victor will traverse this rugged terrain in roughly two and half hours(although Conrad Stoltz broke the record by almost two minutes when he crossed in 2:22:55 in 2002), with the leadwoman 30-minutes behind. Age groupers must reach the bike/run transition by 1:00pm (race starts at 9am), or theirquest for the finish will be cut short. NOTE: Course records mean little as the route has changed through the years.

SWIMDistance: 1.5-kilometers (0.93 miles) Location: Maluaka Beach right in front of the host hotelAccess: Open to the publicThe rough water swim is two laps of a 750-meter triangular course, with a 50-yard beachshuffle between laps to get the blood pumping in a totally different direction. The firstmale & female age groupers out of the water win an XTERRA Vortex 3 full wetsuit.

SWIM RECORD:Gender Name Time YearMale Glenn Wachtel (HI) 18:10 2000Female Raeleigh Tennant (AUS) 18:31 2000

Swim to Bike (T1), and Bike to Run (T2) Transition Location: Located at the lobby level of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort in a big grassy area Access: The swim/bike transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the change-over

from any position around the boundary.

MOUNTAIN BIKEDistance: 32 Kilometers (20 miles)Location: The slopes of the mighty Haleakala VolcanoAccess: Closed to the public

Competitors are not permitted to pre-ride the XTERRA WorldChampionship course. For newcomers, it is read and react. For veterans, the experience might allow them to rememberportions but more often than not it instills a solid feeling ofrespect for the Old Lady of XTERRA.

Every year competitors say, “XYZ course is tougher thanMaui”. Every year around noon on Championship Sunday, the look – the eyes pointing down and the head shaking sideto side – tells you that there is nothing like Haleakala.

Climbing from sea level to 1,200 feet then down and back up to 1,400 feet with a final portion called “the plunge” of 8-kilometers back to sea level, this track has everything. Full of rock strewn paths, gnarly golf ball sized gravel, shortsteep and long go forever climbs, hard packed lava, and sometimes, depending on conditions, deep, dusty silt.

Over 3,000 total feet of climbing.

Page 11: 2010 PRESS GUIDE - TriathlonThe XTERRA World Championship press guide was designed to provide the media with useful information about the 2010 race, the pros competing in it, and XTERRA

OFF-ROAD RUNDistance: 11 Kilometers (7 miles)Location: South Maui

Out on the run athletes will find all sorts of sand - white, gold, black, salt andpepper, green or garnet. There’s a lot more climbing involved, a spooky forest tonavigate, a dozen different surfaces to cross, and just before the finish line some ofHawaii’s most stunning oceanfront scenery.

There is no accounting for the heat generated by gnarly lava fields, making other-wise simple obstacles extremely difficult to conquer. The "Makena Beach Mile" isa grueling slog along soft sand, but a beautiful end run along the ocean-front golfcourse helps racers forget it all at the finish.

Nobody has been to moreXTERRA Championship eventsthan the managing director ofthe XTERRA World Tour -"Kahuna Dave" Nicholas.Having been to every WorldChampionship race in Mauisince creating the sport back in1996, and having been onsiteto see this years races unfoldall over the world - the Kahunais more than qualified to

speculate on who might win it all this year. That doesn'tmean he'll get it right, in fact, he's hardly ever right (just 2for 16 in picking winners over the last eight years). So, with a grain of salt, but some tasty insight nonetheless,

here are the Kahuna's 2010 Maui prognostications:

Another fall is here and the triathlon world focuses onHawaii. The reason I bring this up is in 2009 Eneko Llanosalmost did what nobody thought could be done; win Konaand Maui in the same year. He nearly pulled it off with abrilliant stint at the front in Kona and a win on Maui. This year 3-time XTERRA women’s champ Julie Dibens dideven more than Llanos at Kona by finishing 3rd and leadinguntil the last few miles of the run. How will she do a fewweeks later?

Don’t think for a moment they won’t have competition onMaui. Conrad Stoltz has had another totally dominant year, crushing the field on the definitely Un-Conrad course inUtah. Franky Batelier had a very strong year in Europe,Olivier Marceau is sporting a new beard, won easily in

Switzerland and is rested and ready and Nico Lebrun, thethird French connection is always a threat to win.

Mel McQuaid said it early and has kept her promise to peakin the fall. While winless during the summer, she wonhandily in Canada and then again at the USA Champs andhas had this wicked little smile as if she knows somethingwe don’t. Scottish lass Lesley Paterson is having her finest

year. With her new biking skills keeping her close at T2 andher unbelievably fast running, whoever is in front of hercoming onto the run had best be ahead by a comfortablemargin or they will see a flashing red suited Paterson goingpast.

The womens field is deeper than ever. The Maui course isperfectly suited for Dibens. No wetsuit swim, not too tech-

impressive winning the Canadian championship. Mikeknows Maui and has had many good days there.

A huge entry of age groupers from all around the globe –literally every Continent except Antarctica will be fightingevery bit as hard as the pro’s and could easily play a role inwhat happens.

We have two men and two women with 3 World Champtitles and all are here for 2010. Each of them want to be thefirst to hit 4 and Stoltz, Llanos, Dibens and McQuaid have tobe the favorites. But there are others who will be in the mixso don’t put all your money on this quartet.

We know there has been no rain on Maui. The roads and trails are dusty and loose. Perhaps these

conditions will make things fast – but never assumeanything from Madam Pele. What she gives, she can takeaway and the winner will be the person who treats her withrespect and stays error free.

nical a bike. However 2010 will bring a host of womenready to take her down. As stated, McQuaid is at her peak,Shonny Vanlandingham won everything early but has hadtime to rest since being crowned US Champ again. RenataBucher and Marion “bubu” Lorblanchet tied for the Eurocrown and Bubu is a fast swimmer who will not give up gobsof time to Dibens. Climbing is what Bucher loves to do andalong with petite Austrian Carina Wasle can get to the frontof the pack if they can pass the faster swimmers early onthe bike course. Throw in Lesley’s fabulous running withDanelle Kabush returning after her second child and theexperience of a few 2nd overalls at Maui, mix in Kiwi JenSmith who is always strong on Maui and there are 9 truecontenders.

The men are equally deep. The top favorites have to beLlanos, Stoltz, Marceau, Batelier and Lebrun, in noparticular order. But Austrian Michi Weiss has been superstrong on the road this year and has had two podiums in twoattempts. Sebastien Kienle from Germany is joiningXTERRA German Champ Felix Schumann and while Kienlehas concentrated on road long distance the past few years,he did win XTERRA Germany in 2006. Schumann has hada good race season, has finished his studies and haseverything in place to make his mark on Maui. England’sIan Leitch and Kiwi Richard Ussher are both as fast on therun as Nico Lebrun and if they can keep close on the bike –well they could be the male version of Lesley Paterson.

From the States Josiah Middaugh loves Maui and he andWeiss had the two fastest bike splits last year. SethWealing is always potent when he has a good day.Canadian Mike Vine has taken most of the year off but was

LAST YEAR AT THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPMAKENA, MAUI - Eneko Llanos, 32, of Vitoria-Gasteiz,Spain and Julie Dibens, 34, from Bath, England (living inBoulder, Colorado) won the XTERRA World Championshipand $20,000 first place prize money that goes with it at on ahot and sunny day at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort.

Llanos finished in 2:37:22, 55 seconds ahead of NicolasLebrun from France, to collect his third XTERRA WorldChampionship and first since winning back-to-back titles in2003 and 2004.

The men’s race was amazing, with all the sports heavyweights battling it out on the dusty slopes of Haleakala.Seth Wealing and Eneko Llanos were the first twocontenders out of the one-mile warm water Pacific Oceanswim, followed by Olivier Marceau, Franky Batelier, andConrad Stoltz.

Per his Maui routine, Stoltz jumped to an early lead on themountain bike and was the first to hit the infamous“Heartbreak Hill” section at about mile 4, but the chase packwas thick and persistent. By midway through the 20-milebike Stoltz was still in front but with a tail that includedBatelier, Llanos, Marceau, and Lebrun – one-by-one andseparated by mere seconds. Just past the halfway point“Ned’s Climb” takes riders up some 1,400 feet in a matter ofa mile to the highest point on the course at where the“Plunge” begins.

It’s here where Stoltz’ has built his legend and the spotwhere in past years he could put guys away with his fear-less downhill riding. This year the course was as smooth asit has ever been and minimized the fear factor for his foes. Not to say that the Plunge isn’t still a gnarly, loose, jaggedlava rock riddled stretch, it is – just not as bad.

“This was a tough race, but the bike course was a littlesmoother, a little faster,” said Llanos, who became the firstracer in 14 years to win XTERRA Worlds after competing atthe Ironman World Champs. “The course was a little lesstechnical, and I went at a steady pace and it went reallywell.”

Stoltz cleared the section but didn’t put any time on the leadpack and at mile 15 Llanos and Batelier were right behindhim with Josiah Middaugh 30 seconds back, and Lebrunand Marceau within a minute.

There hasn’t been a race in recent memory here in Mauiwhere six guys were this close this far into the race, andanother big name was about to be added to the mix.

Michi Weiss, last year’s runner-up, came out of the water in79th place a full four minutes behind the leaders, but carvedtwo minutes off his blazing fast bike split of a year ago(1:28:11) to close in on the leaders.

At the bike-to-run transition the spectators lining the lushluau grounds at the host hotel got to see for themselves justhow exciting the racing action was with Stoltz, Llanos, andMiddaugh all coming into and exiting together. Llanos gotthe early jump and once he got in front he never gave it up.“To be honest, I didn’t expect to be this strong,” said Llanos, who finished 14th at the Ironman World Championship in8:37:55 and captured the Hawaiian Airlines Double awardfor the fourth straight time. “Just two weeks ago I was real-ly disappointed in Kona, and now here I am so happy. Icame here with no pressure and just wanted to have funand then I felt strong from the swim and had a good day. When I crossed the finish line I couldn’t believe it, how fastfeelings change, and something amazing happened and I’mjust so happy now.”

DIBENS FIRST TO WIN THREE STRAIGHTJulie Dibens is a cool cat. She’s calm, collected, confidentand an absolute monster on this Maui course. She actuallytrailed in this race for the first time in two years, withChristine “Big Fish” Jeffrey coming out of the water 38seconds up, but that lasted all of about five minutes andthen Julie was Julie – making it look easy and putting moreon more time on her competitors with every turn of thepedal. By mile 11 she had a four-minute lead and was mixedin with the top 15 men. At mile 15 Dibens was up by nearlyfive minutes, it was more than that at transition, and whenshe finished with a women’s event record time of 2:56:42,the finish line crowd waited another seven-and-a-half min-utes before seeing Lesley Paterson.

Dibens is the first pro – man or woman – to win this racethree years-in-a-row and joins the exclusive club of three-time winners with Stoltz, Melanie McQuaid, and Llanos. “I felt good all day except for that last stretch of the run onthe lava,” said Dibens. “I was able to ride in control and runsmart. I’m delighted to be up here on the podium again andto win this race three times in a row is really special.”

Look for Batelier to be a strong contender for the XTERRA World Championshiptitle this year in Maui. The women’s title was to be determined on the trails of Switzerland. Holding a slim lead overLorblanchet in the standings Renata Bucher didn’t have to win in Switzerland to be crowned European Tour Champ for thefifth time, she simply had to finish ahead of her. But on the second lap of the run the French woman was able to passBucher for the race lead and hold on for first place. The win gave Lorblanchet a total of 380 points in the tour standingsand locked her into a tie with Bucher for the women’s tour title. XTERRA tie-breaker rules are determined by the finishingposition in the last race of the season. By winning the last race, Bubu tied Renata and the tie breaker made her the serieschamp.

When XTERRA celebrated its 10th year inOctober of 2005, we created the XTERRAHALL OF FAME. This year, on the eve of theXTERRA World Championship anotherXTERRA legend will be honored at the nightof champions dinner. Past recipients are...

NED OVEREND (2005)After retiring from mountain biking in 1996 at the age of 40 (he won six national titles and became mountain bikingsfirst world champion in 1990), Overend competed in the first-ever XTERRA in 1996, finishing third. In ‘97 he wassecond, and in ‘98 and ‘99 he won consecutive World Championships at the ripe young age of 42 & 43. He was alsothe XTERRA USA Series Champion in 2002. At the 2004 World Championship, at age 50, Overend posted the 9thfastest bike split and placed 21st overall. Midway through the bike course Peter Reid was overheard saying “There’sa 50-year-old in front of me!” He was so devastating on the mountain bike that he earned the nicknames of “DeadlyNedly” and “The Lung.” At the end of his career, commentators respectfully called him “The Old Man of the Mountain.”

SCOTT TINLEY (2006)In 1996, Scott competed in XTERRA's inaugural event, known as Aquaterra at the time. That day, he finished in 4thplace and went on to finish in the top 10 in both 1997 and '98. But more than just an athlete, Scott was one of the earlyambassadors for the sport. Tinley was at the sharp end of getting athletes to Maui. When you look at the high levelpro's that came 10 years ago, it is far more impressive than what one, solitary, unusual race with a $5,000 prize listshould have attracted. Jimmy Riccitello, Mike Pigg, Wes Hobson, Ray Browning, Pat Brown, Scott Molina, EmilioDesoto, Jeff Devlin, Kenny Glah, Paul Huddle, Michellie Jones, Paula Newby, Sian Welch, Karen Smeyers and more.A lot of that participation is because of ST, who helped found and develop the sport of off-road triathlon.

KERSTIN WEULE (2007)Kerstin Weule, using equally deadly swim, mountain bike and run speed, won more XTERRA races than anyone (untilJamie Whitmore took on the challenge). She won 19 XTERRA titles, including the US. Pro Series in 1999 and 2000,and the 2000 World Championship. Born in Braunlage, Germany in 1966, Weule’s name was synonymous withXTERRA for years. The winning started in 1998 in Louisiana and she won the next two big races. In her career,Kerstin won at almost every U.S. venue where XTERRA traveled too, including races in the UK and Canada. Weulebrought much to XTERRA – an open disposition, the ability to share all that she knew at XTERRA University clinics,a great laugh, her cartwheel at the finish line, & blue painted toenails on raceday.

JIMMY RICCITELLO (2008)Flash back to 1996… AquaTerra…the first XTERRA…123 Speedo-clad racers on the start line at dawn on the beachin Wailea, Maui. A who’s who of triathlon and mountain biking showed up to try something completely new…off-roadtriathlon. And, it turned out that XTERRA with its catch phrase “Your toughest competitor is Mother Nature” was rightup Riccitello’s alley. He took the inaugural XTERRA World Championship by more than three minutes over triathlongreat Mike Pigg. After the win, he said “Man this race is a bitch, but it’s the true spirit of triathlon – the athlete againstthe course”. Over seven years Riccitello raced XTERRA all over the U.S., including six more Maui WorldChampionships, and was always the life of the party.

MICHAEL TOBIN (2009)Tobin won at everything he tried, posting championships in running (and not your usual 5K but running up mountainsfor a couple hours); duathlon, where he was Powerman Champ twice with 14 international victories; XTERRA with16 victories and a World Championship; and adventure racing – where he has won all over the world. Tobin dominat-ed XTERRA for years. He won Kirkwood in 1997; won 3 of 4 in 1998; and won 9 out of 10 in 1999. To that point, theone prize that eluded Tobin was Maui. He was 4th in 1997 – 3rd in 1998 – 2nd in 1999 and finally won it all in 2000.He’s the last American to win off-road triathlon’s greatest race.

Lightweight XTERRA Shoes

Designed to Help Athletes Stalk

Their On-Course Prey

TJ Gray and Ashley Brown —

designers of XTERRA’s new line of

footwear and apparel — stood at the

finish line of the XTERRA World

Championship in Maui in October

2008. While many of the competitors

lay in bed the night before counting

sheep in anticipation of the race, that

afternoon Gray and Brown were count-

ing shoes.

Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe.

As athletes poured down from the lower slopes of Mount

Haleakala from their nearly seven-mile trail run over roots,

rocks and ravines, Gray and Brown couldn’t believe their

eyes. “Maybe one in 100 was a trail runner,” said Brown,

who along with partner Gray have also developed shoes for

Nike, adidas and Salomon. “They were all sacrificing

stability for less weight.”

They returned to the drawing board, determined to make

XTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail running

shoe on the market. With four months until the launch of the

shoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City,

designs were tweaked, materials tested — including a

unique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefoot

and a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel.

But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come.

After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, a

molding model never before seen in the category was

created. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole,

replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of two

layers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfort

and stability while taking away weight.

The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightest

trail runners ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces for

men, 9.5 for women.

With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Gray

and Brown began to research every movement taken on a

trail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degree

directional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water,

the balanced gripped-toe run across a log.

As they were going for a timed run in the woods near their

studios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as the

lead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s new

footwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.

“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digging

into loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on every

step, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathlete

at Syracuse.

“The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” he

continued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’s

unique outsole lug concept.”

The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray and

Brown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design forms

independent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flex

zones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted the

lugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center,

helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creating

a larger surface area.

“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’s

co-existence with all things found in the environment, said

Brown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it be

animal, plant or any of nature’s elements.

Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new line

is that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’re

to be connected with.”

XTERRA’s footwear launch includes five styles: trail

runner, trail trainer, ultra trainer, performance sandal, and

performance slide.

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTEDIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom

Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of

XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the

Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.

"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"

explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and

entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.

The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.

Bring those two together in programming, and you've got

something big.

So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that

attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New

Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii.

Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide

leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,

and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of

Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the

Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"

Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says

Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and

TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,

it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."

ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991

TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV

shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the

benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian

Sports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, different

stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good

fun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean

Challenge and a few others televised events, including the

inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour

O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were

allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from

every country kept their amateur status so they could race

in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed

with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,

Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."

A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'

Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain

biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV

shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer

Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever

mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the

XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,

Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,

Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range

meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races

the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump

in the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have a

mountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50

shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road

triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the

Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for

their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was

looking for a new event that could tell a different story about

Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point

was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and

south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach

in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21

miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV

for the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the

marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very

subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all

the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of

opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and

VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were

thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're

forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I

immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've

got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."

THE XTERRA PLANETAt the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined tobecome a lifestylea movement.

And look at what XTERRA has become

- From that one race in 1996 to 100+ in 15 countries in a 14-year span including a 65-stop America Tour for amateursand a full-blown European Tour. XTERRA races can now be found on nearly every continent in the world.

- XTERRA initiated a series of camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards anactive lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance torace as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

- We dish out more than a quarter-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisportathletes and garner the attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. off-road triathlon series alone we recognize close to 200 amateur regionalchampions and 24 amateur national champions, plus relay team and collegiate national champs, XTERRA Trail RunSeries, National and World Champs..

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV and XTERRA.TV. Dozens of adventure themedshows reach into homes all over the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places. Our very own 24/7web TV network, www.xterra.tv, allows viewers to watch our shows on demand for free.

- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, withraces in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game sowe selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website.

- With the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profit specificallydesigned to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.

- We've opened the doors for runners with the XTERRA Trail Running Series. This year there are more than 60 5km,10km, and 21km runs reaching into 15 U.S. States and several countries - providing more chances to participate in thehealthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- We launched the XTERRA Eco Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to thecommunities that host us.

- XTERRA brand licensees have introduced bicycling accessories and XTERRA exercise equipment, XTERRAfootwear is widely available with revolutionary designed trail runners, and XTERRA Wetsuits continues to increase itsmarket share of the wetsuit category.

- We created our very own quarterly magazine, The XTERRA Planet, to keep our membership connected and show-case the amazing athletes and photography we’ve collected through the years.

- And, XTERRA is just 14 years old...
