Head Coach Mark Johnson

Mark Johnson ranks No. 15 among active NCAA Division I baseball head coaches in ca-reer victories with a 24-year record of 989 wins, 504 losses and three ties. He is 11 victories away from becoming the 43rd Division I head coach to earn 1,000 wins. Johnson became the sixth head coach in Sam Houston State University’s modern base-ball history on July 16, 2006. His fi rst three seasons at the helm of the Bearkat program can best be described as “record breaking.” Three years in a row, Sam Houston has earned NCAA Division I tourna-ment berths by sweeping undefeated through the Southland Conference post-season tour-nament. Three consecutive SLC tournament crowns and Division I regional appearances are a league fi rst. In his fi rst season in 2007, Sam Houston had one of the three best turn-around seasons in NCAA Division I baseball with a 40-24 record, an improvement of 17 victories over SHSU’s 23-31 record in 2006. The Southland tourna-ment title sent the Kats to the NCAA Regional for the fi rst time since 1996. With thrilling come-from-behind victories over Troy and Southern Mississippi, Sam Houston reached the NCAA Division I Regional fi nals for the fi rst time in history. Two years ago, the Kats went 37-25 to produce the most wins by Sam Houston teams in consecutive seasons since SHSU won 45 and 44 games in 1986 and 1987. In the NCAA

Regional in Houston, the Kats fell to the No. 1 and 2 seeds, losing to eventual Regional champion Rice by one run. The Kats ran their Southland tournament winning streak to 12, a league best, to earn a third NCAA regional berth in 2009. On the way to Johnson’s 113 wins as SHSU’s skipper, the Bearkats have set 26 school re-cords including most RBIs , hits, doubles and triples and best team batting average (.335). Three Bearkats have been recognized as All-America and, in 2007, Sam Houston produced the NCAA Division I baseball “Closer of the Year” in Luke Prihoda. Also during the 2007 season, Johnson picked up his 900th career coaching victory. He begins the 2010 season 11 wins away from his 1,000th coaching victory. To date, only 36 head coaches in NCAA Division I baseball have achieved that honor. For 21 years, Johnson was head coach at Texas A&M where he directed the Aggies to two NCAA College World Series appearances and a record of 876 victories, 433 losses, and three ties. Johnson served as head baseball coach at Texas A&M from 1984 to 2005. He won Southwest Conference championships in 1986, 1989, and 1993 and Big 12 league titles in 1998 and 1999. His teams competed in the NCAA playoff s 13 times, making 13 NCAA re-gional appearances and reaching the College World Series in 1993 and 1999. Johnson was Sporting News National Coach of the Year in 1993 and United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year in 1999. He is a member of both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Texas Baseball Hall of Fames. During Johnson’s tenure at Texas A&M, 93 percent of the 272 baseball players who competed in the baseball program earned their college degrees. Johnson is a graduate of the University of New Mexico where he received his bachelor’s

degree in science and physical education in 1967 and his master’s degree in Recreation and Physical Education in 1971. He earned All-Conference honors as a member of the Lobos’ baseball team in 1965, 1966, and 1967 and was NCAA All-Region in 1967. Johnson was inducted into the University of New Mexico Athletic Hall of Honor during the fall of 2007. After playing professional baseball in the Mets organization from 1967 to 1969, Johnson served as an assistant coach at New Mexico (1969 to 1971), Arizona (1971 to 1976), and Mississippi State (1976 to 1982) before joining Tom Chandler’s staff at Texas A&M in 1982. During his 21 years as head coach at Texas A&M, 108 players were selected in the Major League baseball draft. Johnson was named as ABCA Regional Coach of the Year in 1986, 1993, 1998, and 1999. He was Big 12 “Coach of the Year” in 1998, 1999 and 2003 and Southwest Conference “Coach of the Year” in 1986, 1989, and 1993. He served as head coach for Team USA in the summer of 1999. His teams at Texas A&M were ranked No. 1 in the nation for 11 weeks in 1989, six weeks in 1993, and three times in 1999. In January 2007, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes presented Johnson with the FCA Baseball Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award. In January 2008, Johnson was the fi rst recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association “Ethics In Coaching” Award at the ABCA national convention in San Diego, CA. Johnson has been married to his high school “sweetheart,” Linda, for 41 years. Both their sons, Ron and Brian, played baseball for their father at Texas A&M. Upon graduation, both were recipients of the prestigious Texas A&M “Student-Athlete of the Year” award. Ron and his wife Beth and Brian and his wife Jill are parents of Mark and Linda’s fi ve grandchildren.

In Jim Blair’s three seasons as recruiting coordinator, hitting coach and outfi eld coach, the Bearkats have produced the three best team bat-ting averages in school history. Sam Houston has rolled up a 113-75 record, three Southland post-season tournament titles and three NCAA regional appearances. The Kats hit .321 in 2007, .335 in 2008 (the Southland Con-ference record) and .328 last year. Prior to Blair’s arrival, the school record for a season was .315 in 1980. The past three seasons, the Bearkat off ense has set 22 school records. Eleven of Blair’s hitters have been named All-Southland Conference a total of 14 times. Eight have been recognized as SLC All-Tournament nine times. Two hitters (Bobby Verbick in 2007 and Todd Sebek in 2008) have earned NCAA Division I All-America honors. Verbick also was named 2008 Southland tournament MVP. Braeden Riley led the NCAA in total hits last year with a Southland record 111. In fact, the top four players in hits in one season in the SLC record book are Bearkats. Keith Stein (103 hits in 2007), Sebek (101 in 2008) and Nick Zaleski (99 in 2009) rank second, third and fourth, respectively. The Kats set the league mark for hits in a season by one team with 740. Blair served four years as an assistant coach at the University of Texas-San Antonio where he worked as hitting, outfi eld, and third base coach. He coached two NCAA Division I All-Americans at UTSA and guided the Roadrunner hitters to a Southland Conference best 55 home runs in 2004. In 2005, UTSA hit a school record 30 triples to rank in the top 10 nationally. Blair was a top hitter for Baylor, compiling a .335 career average as a three-year starter for Steve Smith. Blair earned a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance at Baylor in 2000. He and his wife, Pamela Ann, have three children, Carson (5), Andrew (3) and Reid (1).

During the past two years, Chris Berry has turned a group of young pitchers into a solid staff that has compiled a 73-49 overall record, won two Southland tournament championships and earned two NCAA regional berths. Matt Shelton was SLC tournament “Most Valuable Player” and three Bearkat pitchers have earned all-tournament honors the past two years. Berry previously coached at Baylor, Arkansas State, Young Harris College and Rockford College. At Arkansas State, his fi rst recruiting class was voted best in the Sun Belt Conference by Col-legiate Baseball. He served seven seasons at Baylor helping build a highly decorated pitching corps. In 2006, the Bears pitching staff compiled a 4.13 staff ERA as Baylor fi nished the season ranked 26th nation-ally by Collegiate Baseball after advancing to the NCAA Regionals. The staff recorded 37 victories and 18 saves. In 2005, the Bears posted a team ERA of 3.23 to rank 12th nationally as the Bears advanced to the Col-lege World Series. During Berry’s tenure, the Bears had seven pitchers selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Berry spent a year at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga., serving as an assistant coach. He also coached at Rockford ( Ill.) College and worked as an assistant to the Director of Stadium Opera-tions for the Rockford Cubbies, the Class A affi liate of the Chicago Cubs. Berry received his bachelor’s degree in recre-ational administration from Bluefi eld College in Virginia where he was an Academic All-League pitcher with a 3.40 grade point average. He served as a graduate assistant baseball coach at Rockford College in 1997 and 1998 and as an assistant coach at Young Harris College. Berry is married to the former Connie Kath, and the couple has two children, Kennedy (12), and Jackson (8).

Tim Gray was an All-Southland Conference and Academic All-Southland pitcher for the Bearkats, lettering four seasons from 2004 to 2007. Gray led the Bearkats in strike outs in 2005 and 2006. He compiled a 7-4 record in 2006 and went 6-3 in 2007 including a victory over Texas State-San Marcos in the Southland Conference tournament fi nals that sent Sam Houston to its fi rst NCAA Regional appearance since 1994. Gray was an All-District pitcher for the Huntsville Hornets. He is married to the former Devon Maier . They have a son, Boston Cole.

The 2010 Bearkats

Page 6: 2010 SHSU Baseball Media Guide

For the third year in a row and the sixth time in school his-tory, Sam Houston State earned an NCAA Division I baseball national tournament berth in 2009. The Bearkats extended their Southland Conference tourna-ment winning streak to 12 games, again sweeping through the post-season event unbeaten. The 12 consecutive tourna-ment victories is a league fi rst. Sam Houston is the fi rst South-land team to punch its ticket for the NCAA event by winning three straight SLC post-season tournaments. In 2009, the Kats defeated No. 2 seed Southeastern Louisi-ana 9-2 in the opening round and 7-2 in the semifi nals, No. 3 seed UTSA 8-6 in 11 innings in the quarterfi nals and No. 1 seed Texas State 7-1 in the fi nals. Sam Houston, the No. 7 seed in after an 18-14 league record in 2009, was the lowest seeded team ever to win the SLC post-season title. At the NCAA regionals in Houston, Sam Houston lost to Rice 5-2 and Xavier 9-6. The NCAA Regional appearance capped another outstand-ing season for coach Mark Johnson’s baseball team. In his three years, Johnson has directed Sam Houston to 40 victories in 2007, 37 in 2008 and 36 in 2007. Those 113 wins represent the most wins in consecutive seasons by a Bearkat team since SHSU won 45, 44 and 32 games in 1986 through 1988. Prior to Johnson’s arrival as head coach in 2007, Sam Hous-ton had gone eight seasons without a winning record and fi ve years without qualifying for the Southland tournament. The 2009 Bearkats produced a .328 team batting average, the third year in a row for the Kats to hit more than .300. In 2008, the Kats set a school record with its .335 team average.

Record crowds watched the Bearkats at Don Sanders Stadium during the 2009 season as Sam Houston rolled up another winning record.

The Kats hit .321 in Johnson’s fi rst season as head coach in 2007. Prior to the past three years, the team season batting average school record was .315 in 1980. Last year’s Kats also produced their share of thrills for Sam Houston fans. The baseball team came from behind to win in 24 of their 36 games. They were 8-1 in extra inning contests and won fi ve games with walk-off hits. Nearly a third of the Kats’ 452 runs were scored with two outs. Only 10 lettermen return in 2010 including four pitchers, four infi elders, a catcher and a designated hitter. Second baseman Braeden Riley, who led NCAA Division I baseball and set Southland Conference and Sam Houston school records with 111 total hits in 2009, heads the list of returning players. Riley is a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assocation preseason All-America selection in 2010. He started 60 games for the Kats at second base. His .387 batting average including a 16-game hitting streak. Ryan Mooney, who started 27 games at third base and 24 at shortstop last year, also returns. Mooney hit .305 as a sopho-more including 17 multiple-hit performances. Infi elders Daniel Nottebart and Peter Goudeau, designated hitter Jordan Bunch and catcher Brandon Yates also return. Four veteran pitchers with multi-season experience return. Right hander Matt Shelton was Southland tournament “Most Valuable Player” in 2009. Shelton rolled up a 7-0 record and appearing in 22 games in relief. He was the winning pitcher in tournament victories over No. 3 UTSA in the quarter-fi nals and No. 1 Texas State in the fi nals. Right hander Dallas Gallant was an honorable mention all-league selection and candidate for “Freshman All-America” in 2008. He has compiled a 13-8 record in two years.

Sam Houston State’s four-year-old Don Sand-ers Baseball Stadium is located east of the Bowers Stadium football facility. The $5.5 million Sanders Stadium includes spacious dressing areas, indoor hitting cages, and coaches’ offi ces. Sanders is a former owner of the Houston Sports Association and the Houston Astros Baseball Club and currently, along with Nolan Ryan, is co-owner of Ryan-Sanders Baseball. Ryan-Sanders Baseball owns the Astros’ Class AAA Round Rock Express and Class AA Corpus Christi Hooks. The Houston entrepreneur and phi-lanthropist has donated $1 million to establish an endowment fund to enhance the baseball program at Sam Houston State, Sanders’s alma mater. Sanders, founder and chairman of the investment fi rm Sanders Morris Harris, is a leading fi gure in Houston in a variety of civic, corporate and fi nancial enterprises. He was the founder and chairman of the Houston Police Foundation and a member of the University of Houston System Board of Regents and Houston Police Pension System. In 2001, he was named Houston Interfaith Charities’ “Sportsman of the Year.” His current board affi liations include the Nolan Ryan Foundation,

the DePelchin Children’s Center, and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. “Don Sanders Stadium is an outstanding recruit-ing tool,” SHSU head baseball coach Mark Johnson said. “The new stadium was one of the fi rst things that attracted me to this job. When we were looking into naming the baseball fi eld, we had several crite-ria in mind. We wanted the person to be an alumnus of Sam Houston, we wanted someone who was interested and involved in baseball, and we wanted someone with integrity, credibility and strong character to refl ect what we want to do here for our baseball program. Mr. Sanders was a perfect fi t.” The stadium opened on Feb. 11, 2006. Sam Hous-ton State has attracted record crowds to the 1,164 seat facility including a capacity audiences for a 9-8 victory over the Rice Owls in 2006 and last year with Texas A&M. More than 50 UIL high school baseball playoff games have been held in the new stadium. Further enhancing the facility, dedication ceremonies for the Bud and Joan Haney Diamond Room took place April 27, 2007, as part of the formal naming ceremony for Sanders Stadium. Joseph L. “Bud” Haney (pictured right) is the only athlete in Sam Houston sports history to earn All-America honors four consecutive years. The Haneys were honored for their generous donation to the baseball program. The Bud and Joan Haney

Diamond Room is a multi-purpose meeting area in the baseball/softball facility. Haney, class of 1963, earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting. He earned NAIA All-America honors in 1960, 1961, 1962, and 1963 while playing at Sam Houston State and in his senior year, the Bearkats won the NAIA World Series national championship. The founder, president and Chief Financial Offi cer of Profi les International, a Waco-based occupational assessment company, which now contributes upwards of $15 to $20 million to the local economy, Haney is also the co-author of “40 Strategies for Winning in Business.”

While winning the Southland Conference Com-missioner’s Cup three years in a row on the playing fi eld, Sam Houston State athletics has also led the league in performance in the classroom. Each of the last three seasons, Sam Houston State has placed more student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor roll than any of the other 11 universities in the league. To earn a spot on the honor roll, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.00 grade point average. For the past seven semesters, Sam Houston State athletes have produced a grade point average higher than 2.75. That’s a mark better than the university’s general student population. During the both the fall and spring semesters in 2006-07, Bearkat athletes posted a 2.90 GPA, highest of any athletic department in the Southland Conference. Sam Houston State’s NCAA student-athlete graduation success rate has climbed to 60 percent, an athletic department record. More than 90 percent of the student-athletes who complete their eligibility at Sam Houston earned their degree. The performance in the classroom this spring marked the 30th consecutive academic semester that the overall department GPA has been 2.30 or higher (on the 4.0 scale). For the past 23 semesters, that average has been 2.5 or higher. “We are extremely proud of our athletes’ achievements in the classroom and commend our
