15 universities in six southeastern states enter the 37th year of

setting the standards nationally, always breaking new ground.

Inthesummerof1970,sixcollegepresidentsmettotalkabout

athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the

Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the

CEOs, the first in NCAA history. To this day, it is that CEO-control

and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 champi-

onships (football; men’s & women’s cross country and soccer; vol-

leyball, men’s & women’s basketball, tennis and golf; softball and

baseball) so bitterly contested. From that point forward, the Gulf

South Conference has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack.

Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying

sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA

Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legisla-

tion. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season

bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own new construction

office space. But the crowning moment came last year, when the

GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package of nine

football games and its basketball finals. Add to that its web-TV

show, “GSC Sports Weekly,” and you can see why 2005-06 was so

special and why 2006-07 should be even better.

We take pride in our 41 National Team Championships in 12

sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there

is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes

regularly earn Academic All-America. The Conference added one

more National Title to its resume in 2005-06 when Valdosta State

captured its first-ever NCAA Men’s Tennis Crown, marking the third

consecutive GSC National Men’s Tennis Championship (West Flor-

ida “back-to-backed” (deleted words, added quotes) in 2004 and

2005). Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jackson-

ville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and

Troy State were the charter members who launched the league.

Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the

GSC to football, wonby JacksonvilleState. In1971, theaddition

of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the

membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond,

LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began

championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and

Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined

in1972andtwoyearslater,NELAleftforDivisionIwithSELAand

Nicholls State following in 1979.

The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when

the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia

(1983). In1991, Tennessee-MartinandTroyStatewentDivision

The University of West Alabama is a fully accredited state inst i tut ion wi th a nationwide reputation for its outstanding student body and faculty members. West Alabama is small enough that the students get to know almost everyone on campus, and guests are greeted with a friendly “Hello” from passing faculty and students.

The University was founded in 1835 as a female academy, and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was under the leadership of the colorful Miss Julia Tutwiler. Through the efforts of Miss Tutwiler, this institution became one of the most outstanding teacher colleges in the South.

The University is located in Livingston, Alabama, the county seat of Sumter County, on United States Highway 11, Alabama Highway 28, and Interstate20/59.Itis116milessouthwestofBirmingham,130mileswest of Montgomery, and 37 miles east of Meridian, Mississippi.

Although the original school site covered only seven acres, the facilities have grown, and today the campus sprawls over 574 acres, with beautiful rolling hills, woods, and a 54-acre lake. An old covered bridge, locatedneartheGeorgeC.WallaceUnionBuilding, reflectsthemoodand character of this easy, quiet, and friendly part of the state.

The University of West Alabama is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor of Alabama. While recognizing a special obligation to the educational, economic, and cultural life of the community and region where it is located, the University welcomes students from more distant locales.

The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education, the College of Business, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Division of Nursing, and the School of Graduate Studies. ItofferstheAssociate inScience,BachelorofArts,BachelorofScience,Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education and Master of Science in Continuing Education degrees.

Additionally, the University’s College of Education, College of Business, and Division of Nursing are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the National League of Nursing, respectively. The University’s accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools gives regional and national recognition to credits and degrees earned at the University.

The student body of some 5,157 comes from Alabama and many other states. Of the teaching faculty, well over 50 percent hold earned doctorates and more than 65 percent have at least one year of education beyond the master’s degree.

A Message From The President ...Welcome to West Alabama’s regional state university. As a

comprehensive state university, we offer a broad range of academic programs leading to the associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as support services to the business, government, and education communities. We also have students from throughout the United States and from many countries, creating a diverse and stimulating learning environment.

There are very few universities left that can offer quality academic programs in a very personal setting at a reasonable cost. Our average class size is about twenty-three students, and our students receive advisement and counseling directly from the faculty in their major areas. Furthermore, we offer a small town setting with a secure environment, free from many of the distractions of larger cities.

All of our academic colleges offer various forms of consulting and problem solving to diverse businesses and agencies within the region. Many of these programs provide our students with hands-on experience in the form of practica and internships, as well as providing valuable support to the community.

As UWA’s president, I make it a priority to be visible on campus, and my door is always open to students. Indeed, at UWA, all employees

pride themselves on placing students first.

Progress. That’s the word that best describes the UWA department of athlet-ics since Dr. E. J. Brophy’s arrival as Di-rector of Athletics on June 1, 2006.

At UWA, Brophy oversees the insti-tution’s 10 NCAA Division II sports thatcompete in the Gulf South Conference, as well as Men’s and Women’s Rodeo.

Brophy enters his fourth year as Di-rector of Athletics at the University of West Alabama after serving as As-sistant Athletic Director for External Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from March 2005 through May 2006.

Brophy has led the charge in improving UWA’s athletics facilities, including renovations to Tiger Football Stadium, the UWA Football Prac-tice Facility, the Tartt Baseball Complex, Pruitt Gymnasium and the UWA Softball Facility. We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.

NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affi rm that athletics events should refl ect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, family-friendly events a standard of the Division II experience.

s dora dahlberg beard indoor Practice facilityWhat started as a dream has now become reality. On April 19, 2008 the state-of-the-art, 41,000 square foot training center located at UWA’s Tartt Baseball Field was named the Dora Dahlberg BeardIndoorPracticeFacility.

The naming opportunity was made possible through kind contribu-tions to the university by Mrs. Beard’s family. “We greatly appreci-ate Anthony Beard (son) and Paul Beard (husband) for their kind contributions and for allowing us to honor Mrs. Beard in such a spe-cial way” said UWA Director of Athletics Dr. E. J. Brophy. “She had a very special place in her heart for our university and Tiger Athletics, and we take great pride in having her name adorn the best indoor practice facility for baseball and softball in the state of Alabama”.

The type of facility looked upon with envy by even the largest Division I schools, the Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility provides world class training opportunities for all UWA baseball and softball student-athletes, as well as exterior concession and restroom facilities for Tiger baseball fans enjoying UWA’sfamous“outfielddecks”ongamedays.

The late Mrs. Beard’s affinity withUWA included the fact that her daughter, Stephanie Beard Tesney, is a graduate of the university. Her nephew, Rob Dahlberg, was a standout baseball player for the Tigers and her niece,KateDahlberg, isajunioratthe university this fall.

uwa softball facilitiesNestled neatly on the “UWA Loop” in the heart of West Alabama’s spacious campus, the UWA softball complex has served as the perfect setting for Tiger softball since 1998. With four softball diamonds, two multipurpose athletic fieldsandabrandnew,state-of-the-artfieldlightingsystem,UWA’s beacon of softball is among the most accommodat-ingDivisionIIfacilitiesintheSouthtoday. It’sgroundworkwas laid in1997, just in time for its dedication and inagural softball game in the spring of 1998. Since then, the Complex has blossomed with numerous improvements and modifications including a centrally located press box, home locker room and concession facilities, a full-size batting cage and underground sprinklers. Signs honoring UWA’s championship teams line theoutfieldwall. Today, the UWA Softball Complex hosts countless intramural athletic events in addition to its annual slate of top-notch NCAA softball.
