Built in 2003, BobcatField at West Campus pro-vides an excellent venue forsome of the best collegiatesoccer available in the stateof Georgia.

Bordered by native treeson three sides to provide apicturesque backdrop, thissoccer-specific facility fea-tures new light fixtures tohost evening competition, aprominent scoreboard to keep fans in the know and well-mani-cured hybrid bermuda grass turf.

In fall 2009, the Bobcats added impressive covered grandstandseating to the facility, so Bobcat fans can enjoy the games despitethe weather.

Officially part of the Peeler Complex - including the baseballand softball fields nearby - the field was opened in the fall of2004, the first varsity season for Bobcat soccer. Prior to the 2009season, Georgia College began construction on seatback standsto the vicwing hillside, improving the viewer’s experience whileadding a more complete feel to the facility as a whole.

The Bobcats have had success on the home pitch, 30-13-9 intheir five seasons, including three Peach Belt TournamentQuarterfinal victories. The ‘Cats were 4-3-4 at home in 2009.

Georgia College has many fine athletic facilities in which tocompete, highlighted by the $9 million multipurposeCentennial Center.

The Centennial Center, which was completed in the fall of1989, serves as the home for the Georgia College men andwomen’s basketball teams as well as the offices of theBobcat athletic department. Located within the historicaldistrict of Milledgeville, the 95,000 square-foot buildingalso houses the Department of Kinesiology, and the Centerfor Health and Lifestyles.

The completion of the facility guaranteed that the Bobcatswould be competing in one of the finest on-campus arenas in the

state of Georgia and the southeast. The Center has a seating capacity of

4,071 fixed seats and can accommo-date up to 800 additional personswith the arranging of chairs on thefloor. It features foldout end zoneand upper bleachers and three fullsize basketball courts. Its primaryuse is for Bobcat basketball, but italso is excellent for large events suchas concerts, conference general ses-sions or exhibits.

In addition, the Centennial Center serves as the home of thenationally ranked Georgia College men and women’s tennisteams. Seven lighted laykold surface courts are located justoutside of the Centennial Center.

The Centennial Center also has a three-lane 1/8-mile walk-ing/running indoor track, an outdoor swimming pool, a free-weightroom, four racquetball courts and an athletic training room.

The Bobcat baseball, softball and soccer teams compete at thePeeler Athletic Complex. Located minutes from the main campus, the Peeler complex underwent a major facelift in 1992 with theaddition of box seats and the renovation of the backstop for thebaseball field. In an effort to make Georgia College more of a home for Bobcatsoccer players, the lockerroom at West Campus got a much-needed facelift in the summer of 2008.

The facility has a much softer look, and is more inviting with theaddition of couches and other more home-style furniture.

Bobcat futbollers can also enjoy their own sit-in style locker, complete with attractive name-plate.

tler that is “composed on the ball” andstrong in the air.

Another starter back to the defense issophomore Becky Knoll after seeing15 starts in 2009. “Becky is a dynamiccenter back. She’s my General outthere, with great communication andorganization to our defense.”

Another starter back is sophomoreJamie Colcord who spent time asboth a defensive-mid and at back. Sheis “strong and physical, getting into theattack very well”. Colcord netted thegame-winner in the 2-1 overtime matchwith Barry University.

Sophomore Haley O’Hayer is a top-notch utility player for coach Clark, as she can excel at multiplepositions both in back and on the front line. O’Hayer utilizesher hard work, fitness and speed to her advantage. SeniorKayla Emerson is in for another utility role, and could seetime on all three lines. She has good speed and is well skilled.

Sophomore Amanda Veillon will be a contributor at outsideback or a defensive center mid, and brings a great grade schoolpedigree from Parkview High.

Slotted for time at center back, outside back or defensive mid, freshman Anna Barrow is a composed player that “needsgrowth tactically”. Classmate Sarah Yoder “needs experienceplaying at the faster pace, but is a solid defender with good 1v1skills.

MIDFIELDERS

Two-time all-conference pickAlly Treat is quite possiblythe top midfielder in the PBC,a “steadfast and composed”competitor who is “dominantin the air”. She’s not afraid topull the trigger to help theoffense, as the midfielder tal-lied a goal and four assists ayear ago.

The Georgia College & State Universitysoccer program plans to mix in the oldwith the new this season, as the Bobcatswelcome new head coach Hope Clark totake the helm. Back are eight startersfrom a team that finished third in thePeach Belt Conference (PBC), includingfour former All-PBC selections.

“This is one of the deeper teams I’ve evercoached,” admits Clark. “And that hasme excited about our options againstdifferent lineups. Our fitness as alwaysis key. Once we’ve got that down, we’llknow where we stand.”

Stifling defense has been the hallmark ofthe Bobcat soccer team for the last fewseasons, and this year’s squad previewstarts with defense as well.

GOALKEEPERS

The first All-American in program history, Mary RobPlunkett returns for her senior season. She allowed just a 0.59GAA a year ago, adding in a .896 save percentage. Plunkett hastwice been named all-conference, and is a “talented keeper withimpressive size” according to Clark.

Freshman Taylor Mulryan redshirted an injury-riddled 2009,but did see limited action. “Taylor is hungry and extremelycoachable. Her athleticism will allow her to challenge Plunkett, advancing the success of our goalkeepers.”

DEFENDERS

Two All-PBC backs return toanchor the defensive line.Senior Jessica Binkowskiand junior Tawny Moffatboth know what it takes to besuccessful in Division II soccer.A two-time all-conferencechoice, Binkowski provides“great senior leadership” with“exceptional speed that allowsher to help the attack.”

Junior Karen Bonilla is one of the top players on theteam, according to Clark. Savvy and creative with the ball,Bonilla helps out on both sides with her vision and abilityto “hit the switch”.

Freshman Taylor Yee is an outstanding freshman makinga mark on her coach in the early preseason with her skill.Yee is a “fighter, with excellent vision and passing preci-sion”. Rookie Brittaney Borror can “hammer the ball, and also is technically sound” and will make an impact thisseason if she can work better off the ball and on defense.

Now in her second season as a Bobcat, Olivia Holden is awell-skilled offensive midfielder with good 1v1 ability andfluidity on the ball. Junior Leah Frazer is a strong 1v1defender, and is “a sound and composed player”.

Senior Kelli McLane continues to battle back frominjuries that kept her out of all but five games in 2009, andClark is hoping to use her “vision and skill as well as hercreativity” in the attack.

FORWARDS

Junior Megan McAlpin returns after leading the 2009squad with five goals and six assists. McAlpin was theoffensive catalyst for the Bobcats and she “has a never quitattitude, continually working hard for her teammates”.Sophomore Anna Wierzbicki had a pair of goals and twoassists in her freshman season, and is a talented “ball con-trol player with solid 1v1 vision and good work at the pointof attack”. The sophomore will work on getting on frame atthe final attack.

Senior Jessica Newland will look to contribute with herexperience and leadership qualities. The senior has fourgoals and three assists in her career.

Freshman Alex Knight is quite possibly the most talented1v1 offensive player on the team, “very creative and flashy”.Another rookie, Allie Schechner will make a late-gameimpact with her strength and power.

Freshman Stephanie Andino has been “one of the bestsurprises” of the preseason. With “fantastic touch and com-posed attitude in the final third”, Andino will battle for astarting spot. Rookie Katie Taylor is a “bright player withgood 1v1 skills and a high workrate”.The Bobcats struggled to score at times in the 2009 season, leading to 14 total overtime periods and a 1.02 goals scoredaverage. Clark plans to address the scoring punch in 2010.

“The build-up is there, we need to work on playing quickerand not holding the ball as much,” she said. “We need

impact players, not role players. Previously this team wasinterested in what was safe. We need to take risks and go tothe goal. We have new players that are going to make animmediate impact, as well as returners that have alreadystepped up their game.”

senior forward Hayley Ferrell and junior defender Morgan Cobb earnedslots on the Southeast Region squad.

Ferrell and Cobb joined five other Bobcats on the All-PBC teams, as soph-omores Jessica Binkowski, Mary Rob Plunkett, Ally Treat and KaylaEmerson joined freshman Karen Bonilla with all-conference honors.Junior Kara Teresi and freshman Megan McAlpin were named to the PBCAll-Tournament Team.

The Bobcats got it done in the classroom as well, as senior Beth Coughlinand Binkowski were selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA AcademicAll-District Team. Coughlin, Jamie Nevin, Treat, Binkowski, Lyric Burnett,Jeni Day, Kelli McLane, Plunkett and Ferrell were also selected to the firstPeach Belt All-Academic Team.

The Bobcats also picked up a team academic award through the NSCAAand the National Ethics/Sportsmanship honor from the same organization.

Bobcats garner first NCAA Tournament trip amongother great momentsWith a 13-3-4 record, best in the program's history, a 5-1-2 Peach Belt record, also best ever, and with several team and individual records broken, there is nodoubt that Georgia College Soccer has become an elite program recognizedNationally with it's first NSCAA National Ranking as well as it's first-ever NCAANational Tournament Appearance.

In perspective, this was truly an amazing season not just in the historicalcontext of the program, but for any program at any time: A dominating teamdefense which was on top of the national statistics, being nationally ranked andmaking the NCAA tournament is a great year for any team and especially for afive-year old program in the middle of it's first coaching transition.

After a tough pre-season schedule, the season started with a 0-0 tie againstBelmont Abbey, not the way coaches and players would have envisioned, but inthe second game against perennial regional powerhouse Tusculum College, a 2-1 win gave the team much needed confidence boost.

Two more wins against non-conference opponents and a 3-0-1 recordmeant the team's first appearance in the NSCAA Regional Ranking, an honormaintained through the end of the season.

The team's first conference match against UNC Pembroke would prove tobe a test since UNCP was ranked in the top-10 nationally and undefeated. In anaccident-filled game, UNCP would break through at the end of the half and handthe Bobcats its first loss of the season, and what would be the only regular sea-son loss of the year.

A four-game winning streak including a 1-0 win at home vs. Lander, pre-ceded a much anticipated match against Armstrong Atlantic, who had been inthe NCAA Tournament the last two years. After going down an early goal, theBobcats showed much character and were able to score two goals before half-time. It seemed the score would hold up until the last minute of play when AASUscored a tying goal to send the game into OT, but neither team was able to breakthe deadlock.

In the next six games, the Bobcats posted a 5-0-1 record, including four keyPBC wins leading to the last regular season contest at Columbus State. CSU hadalready clinched the PBC Championship, and Georgia College could finish nohigher than third place, its highest finish ever, but the game was a defensive bat-tle, in which the tough Georgia College defense provided its 12th shutout.

The Conference tournament brackets were set and the Bobcats beat Lander2-0 in the first round to set up a rematch with UNC Pembroke in the semifinal inEvans, Ga. In a game where the Bobcats were out playing their opponents, a"fatal five minutes cost us the game," said Favero referring to a missed penaltykick for the Bobcats and allowing two goals right after that. A late tally off a cor-ner kick proved to be too little. So could this great season have come to an end.... Georiga College would have to wait three long nights and two days to find outif their 13-2-4 record would be enough to get an at-large bid to the NCAA tour-nament.

On a Monday afternoon, as the team gathered in the locker room, theannouncement was made and the team exploded with joy and emotion. TheBobcats had done it ... they were on their way to the first-ever NCAA appearanceand would face Catawba College, a team Favero was familiar with from his daysin the South Atlantic Conference.

The game started well for the team with the run of play and early scoringchances clearly on their favor. One of those clear chances was capitalized halfwaythrough the first half on a goal by sophomore Kayla Emerson. The second halfsaw the momentum change and a couple of missed clearances led to the tyingtally by Catawba. The uncharacteristic defensive lapses would prove to be theundoing of the team as in the first OT period, a similar play would lead to the lastgoal the team would allow in 2008, and with it the end of an incredible season.

HONORSGeorgia College also landed its first players on the NSCAA All-Region Team, as

Now entering its 21st year of existence in 2010-11, the Peach BeltConference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in thenation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed aconsistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 28national championships and 25 national finalist

Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s andwomen’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 champi-onship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009.

The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division IIconference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five ofthose 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt andbegin play in fall 1990.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing anational championship. The Columbus State golf team took thehonor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golfchampionships the Cougars own. One year later, the Landermen's tennis team began their record-breaking run of eightstraight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCAmen's golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06while AASU women's tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2008-09 season was among the conference’s most memo-rable. The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s and women’s tennis teamsboth won their respective national championships – for the secondyear in a row; a feat only done once before in college tennis. In addi-tion, the Augusta State men’s basketball team became the first con-ference program to make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Elite Eight,Armstrong Atlantic became the first PBC volleyball team ever to

advance to the Elite Eight and the North Georgia softball team wasranked #1 in the nation and reached the World Series.

The seven charter members of the conference were ArmstrongAtlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis MarionUniversity, Georgia College & State University, Lander University,USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt AthleticConference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to PeachBelt Conference in May of 2000.

Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembrokebecame the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed byKennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State Universityon July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997.Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranksin 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference wel-comed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 andGeorgia Southwestern State University in 2006.

For 2009-10, the Peach Belt has grown once again with the addi-tion of the University of Montevallo and Flagler College, giving thePBC 13 members, the most the league has ever had. The addition ofthe two schools returns the PBC to the state of Florida and expandsthe league into Alabama for the first time.

David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in Mayof 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC com-missioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing thestrong growth of the conference as its second era begins.

The conference currently holds championships in 13 sports, sixfor men and seven for women.

Vision Statement

The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participa-tion in athletic, academic, and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II.

We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of alldemographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athleticaspirations reflect a commonality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.
