by Reilly Smith

A s someone who had just ar-rived at his second American

Renaissance conference once

said, “It’s great to be among the livingagain.” He was right. There is nothinglike spending a weekend with 250 otherpeople who understand , and the contrastbetween that atmosphere and what we

greater. However, you can be amongthe living a lot more often than theevery two years when AR conferencesare held. You can start an AR club inyour own area, and get a dose of sanitywhenever you need it.

This article explains how four men

time at an AR conference, and went onto build one of the more successful clubs

like to explain how we went about it andwhat we learned, and I hope our experi-ence will inspire others to start clubs.

The 2002 AR Conference was in

September 11 attacks; it was the attacksthat motivated me to subscribe to ARand go to the conference. Before that,I was already aware of the Left’s anti-Western and anti-white agendas. I hadwarned friends and family and anyone

who would listen about multicultural-ism, Islamic jihad, and Third-Worldimmigration. I considered myself something of a paleoconservative,

Pat Buchanan, particularly on issues of race and immigration.

Still, the Muslim attacks on oursoil shocked me to the core. I beganto believe paleoconservatism was notenough, that the country needed some-thing more nationalist and explicitly for

our people —the sort of thing AR hadlong talked about. A ticket to a confer-

may not seem like much in response tothe September 11 attacks, but that was

I had attended a variety of politicalconferences on the Right, but this was

know what to expect. Any reservationsI might have had, though, were instantlyallayed. I met wonderful and interestingpeople and was impressed by their high

level: people with Ph.D.s in many sub- jects, doctors, lawyers, scientists, engi-neers, teachers, retired police detectives,MBAs, internet developers, accountantsand many retired people who were con-tributing their time and wisdom.

At any conference you can sense

the energy level, and the AR Confer-ence was charged with excitement, aspeople discussed dissident ideas withlike-minded people face to face, manyfor the first time. There was alwaysspirited conversation among confereesand speakers in hallways, the lobby, the

bar, the restaurant, as several hundredpeople found themselves free—“Free atlast! Thank God Almighty!”— free fromthe chains of racial orthodoxy. This wasthe atmosphere I wanted to take backwith me to Chicago.

Many people had their state or city ontheir name tags, and during the banquet, the AR staff had the good sense to seatpeople by region. This was how I was

able to meet three other people from theChicago area whom I could have missedin the excitement of meeting and talkingto so many other people. We agreed tomeet again.

Letters from ReadersSir — AR did confused country-

music fans a real service by publishing“Implicitly White, Explicitly Anti-

White” (see December 2009 issue). Dis-cussions about the anti-white tendenciesof some performers take place every dayamong thinking fans, but we are notlikely to see such careful arguments laidout in print. This is another case of ourculture being corrupted and used to un-dermine traditional Americans and theirheritage. Thank you for this thought-provoking and informative article.

D. Tyrone Crowley, Prattville, Ala.

Sir — The review in your January

issue of the book about Mexico waseye-opening. I did not know drug smug-glers have a patron saint to whom theymake grateful pilgrimages after a suc-cessful run. Nor had I heard about thecult of Santa Muerte (“Saint Death,” of all things) that seems to attract under-world types. This is the kind of deepsuperstition one expects of Haitians orCongolese pygmies.

But even more surprising is the bra-

imagine Bernie Madoff living it up in atop-security prison, carrying on affairs,

running his con game just as before, secure in the knowledge that his menwould spring him? Or someone on theFBI’s ten-most-wanted list taking over

the latest top-40 band, and holding a24-hour party?

Anything bad is possible in a countryas rotten as that. It’s no wonder half of all Mexicans admit to pollsters that theywould move in with us if they could.

Carter Jennings, Cheyenne, Wyo.

Sir — You may recall that early thisyear, the Pentagon issued a report warn-ing that Mexico is on it way to becominga “failed state,” to use the current eu-

phemism for descending into savagery,

and that a “wholesale collapse of civilgovernment” is entirely possible.I have no love for Mexicans, but

in their defense, if the drug trade has produced thugs powerful enough tothreaten the government it is only be-cause Americans buy their products. I

legalizing drugs convincing. We would be better off if drugs were legal, and theMexicans would be much better off.

And it is worth thinking about whatwould make life better for Mexicans. If Mexico begins to look like Somalia,

just think how many Mestizos will head“war on drugs,” Mexico could reach the

point where it made sense to invade the place, destroy the cartels, and prop upthe government. If there is any countryon earth where the folly of “nation build-ing” could conceivably be defended itis Mexico.

Of course, we would never go inand straighten out Mexico, no matter how badly it needed it. That would be“insensitive” at best and “imperialist” or even “genocidal” at worst. Better to let

the country collapse than open ourselvesto such charges!Charles Hartwell, Albuquerque,

N.M.

Sir — I was very interested to readin the January cover story about radiohost Dennis Prager’s account of thecompany that puts together focus groupsto evaluate radio programming. Mr.Prager says that the company does not

include blacks in the groups becausewhite people won’t say what they reallythink as soon as a black person expressesan opinion. They are afraid to disagreewith a black for fear of being thought“racist.”

means. What does cowardice of thiskind bring to jury deliberations, facultyhiring committees, school boards, orlegislatures? Just imagine how manyterrible things have happened becausewhites said nothing for fear of offendinga black person.

This reminds me of something Mi-chael Levin wrote about in Why Race

Matters . He noted how easily blackswork themselves into a fury about “rac-ism” or “oppression,” and describedhow this effects whites. Most whitesdo not get furious over nothing, so theyassume blacks must have a good reason

to be angry. They may not completelygrasp what a furious black is complain-ing about, but they believe that if he isscreaming he must have a real griev-ance. So they give in.

The same thing happens when blacksriot. Whites believe blacks are express-ing legitimate rage over real injustices.Because whites cannot imagine riotingfor no good reason, they do not thinkblacks would either. All this keepswhites cowed and blacks on the moraloffensive.

I think most blacks would be unable

to describe the process in the termsI have, but they have an instinct forkeeping whites off balance. Whites willcontinue to be treated this way until theyshow some backbone.

Jeffrey Goldsmith, Poughkeepsie,N.Y.

Sir — Your collection of racialanecdotes in the January cover storyreminds me that many blacks just wantto humiliate whites whenever they can.James Baldwin, the black novelist petted

and adored by whites in the 1950s and1960s, put it this way:“[T]here is, I should think, no Negro

living in America who has not felt, brief-ly or for long periods, . . . simple, nakedand unanswerable hatred; who has notwanted to smash any white face he mayencounter in a day, to violate, out of motives of the cruelest vengeance, theirwomen, to break the bodies of all whitepeople and bring them low . . . .”

guests, but it was a success. We recap-tured the energy and conviviality of theAR conference.

Since then we have grown througha variety of ways. Each of us broughtfriends and family members to subse-quent meetings, and we found memberswho left e-mail addresses on AR mes-sage boards or the comments pages onthe AR website. As we grew, we werelucky enough to have a member withthe Internet savvy to build a web page

for the club: http://www.chicagoamren.com/. We used the site as a bulletinboard for events and to recruit new

members. We also used a service offeredby the AR staff to reach other subscrib-ers in the area (see sidebar). We werealso able to contact people in the localchapters of the Council of Conservative

As the club grew we reached thepoint where we could invite speakers.

William H. Regnery II, the founder of such prominent white advocacy insti-tutions as The Occidental Quarterly ,Washington Summit Publishers, andthe National Policy Institute. We found

a Greek restaurant that would let us useits banquet room for no extra charge. The talk was a great success, with manyadditional new members showing upto hear it, and then signing up to stayinformed about future meetings.

We have also invited Serge Trifkovic, author of The Sword and the Prophet ,Michael Hart, author of Understanding

Human History , and AR’s editor, JaredTaylor. Guest speakers are always agood way to boost turnout.

We have held a few movie screen-ings. One was of Africa Addio , a remark-

able 1960s Italian documentary aboutnever distributed in the United Statesbecause of pressure from egalitariangroups. We also watched Islam: What the West Needs to Know , which featuredone of our speakers, Dr. Trifkovic.

Along the way, the club worked out anumber of decisions other groups might

is often enough to keep members fromlosing interest and not too often to burnthem out.

works best.3. Where to meet? A restaurant with

a private meeting room is ideal. It isan imposition on a member to openhis home for a meeting, and it may bea risk if there are new people comingwhom none of us knows. Also, newpeople usually feel more comfortablemeeting us in a public place rather thanvisiting the home of someone they havenever met.

4. How to stay in touch? We use thecontacts members are willing to giveus: usually e-mail or telephone. Some

people prefer regular mail.5. How to keep out Leftist spies andother riff-raff? In fact, there isn’t muchof a problem with spies. The Left is

thinks we would shoot anyone whoturned up without a sheet or an arm-band. In any case, a lefty trying to soundlike a “racist” is practically a comedyroutine and very easy to see through.Almost without exception it is not hardto sense who belongs in the club and

tattooed types show up and invite thewhole club to the Adolph Hitler birth-

our very down-to-earth, unmistakablymiddle-class demeanor put them off;they never came back.

That said, we are an “inclusive”group. Anyone who agrees with AR

welcome. Our members are Protestant,Catholic, and Jewish. We have atheists,

agnostics, and the occasional Odinist. We have Creationists and Darwinists, and everything in between. We haveZionists and ardent fans of Kevin Mac-Donald. We have Hispanic members, and were recently contacted by an Arab-American who is an AR fan and wantsto join. All members are in fundamentalagreement on the vital necessity forwhite survival and maintaining whitemajorities. If we have a litmus test, thatis it, and our discussions are enlivened

by the variety of perspectives our mem-bers bring to them.

At the other end of the spectrum,anti-white Leftists have called our club“extremist” and a “hate” group—sowe are clearly doing something right. The Anti-Defamation League calledus “extremist” for honoring the life of Sam Francis, and for inviting WilliamRegnery to speak. The Southern Pov-erty Law Center (SPLC) has put us ontheir Chicago-area “hate group map,”so we’re lumped in with the Nation

a Moral Environment (anti-gay), the

the Jewish Defense League.6. Who runs the club?

We have no legal structure, but the four of us whostarted the club act as aninformal board, largelymaking decisions of whereand when to meet. At meet-ings, the “board” asks foropinions of members.

7. Education or activ-ism? Some people show upseeking a more politically

active club, along the linesof, say, the Minutemen orthe CofCC, and may bedisappointed to learn weare mainly a discussiongroup. We see our club asmore of an “intellectualsalon” than a campaignheadquarters. We empha-

and so on. This does notmean we exclude discussion of politicsor discourage people from being politi-cally active; far from it. Indeed, we often

discuss upcoming political and activistevents, but we are mainly interested inideas.

personalities of our members. There isno reason why different AR clubs neednot have different characters, and I caneasily imagine a club becoming veryinvolved in local and even nationalissues.

8. How much structure? Many civic

ceremonies, follow Roberts Rules of Or-

meetings. Our meetings tend to be moreunstructured. If we bring in a speaker,of course, the meeting is more formal.I know of other clubs that have tried amore structured approach with assignedreadings and so forth, but they failed.Members skipped the assigned readingsor other preparation, and drifted away.

If anything, we may have gone toofar in the direction of the “bull ses-sions” that crop up on the margins of AR conferences, but that was the feel-ing we wanted to preserve. The clubin New York City I referred to earlierhas a social hour, then a formal hour of discussion, followed by another socialhour. This, too, sounds like a promisingformat.

9. Outreach. Be on the lookout forlocal events that might attract new mem-

bers. When we invited Dr. Trifkovicto speak, we knew of an immigration

reform conference that was meetingin Chicago a few weekends before ourevent. Some of us attended the confer-

and the Trifkovic event. That helped usbuild attendance.

If you do hold an event—say aspeaker, or a screening of something likethe movie Zulu or Craig Bodeker’s AConversation About Race (Mr. Bodekerwill be speaking at the AR conference inFebruary), you can ask the AR staff toalert other subscribers in the area or evento announce your event on the AR webpage. ers about your group even if they can’tcome to a particular meeting.

Also, you should know that somepeople will show up who will seem likewonderful new members to your club—and then never come back. We have along list of people who share our viewsand have attended a meeting or two,but for whatever reason do not return. We are still able to reach many of thesepeople. They are still for our cause andread our announcements with interest.

We know from the Internet and theAR web page that we are far from aloneand isolated, but for us there is nothinglike meeting like-minded people faceto face. In our case, good friendshipshave formed outside of club meetings, and members invite each other to par-

ties, weddings, dinners, and other socialevents.

There are now several clubs aroundthe country that are moving from “sur-vival” to “stability.” After a networkof such clubs is established, we expectto move beyond just our own fans andmembers. Clubs could sponsor publicdebates or bring speakers to a local li-brary or college and encourage others tosubscribe to AR. In time, we can bypassthe Left’s stranglehold on the media, and

Walking on Eggshells (Part II)How to be white in multi-cultural America.

Part I, in the January issue, described the complex etiquette whites must followin all matters relating to race, and the

price they pay for violating it. Non-whites are generally exempt from theserequirements.

There is another kind of pressure

blacks and other non-whites donot face. They can say prettymuch anything without being called a“racist.” Claire Mack is a former mayorof San Mateo, California. In a 2006newspaper interview, she complainedthat too many guests on television talkshows were “wrinkled-ass white men,”and wondered why there were notmore blacks. No one ever asked her to

Daisy Lynum, a black commissionerof the city of Orlando, Florida, angeredthe city’s police when she complained

police union demanded an apology, sherefused, saying, “That is how I talk andI don’t plan to change.”

When a white man explained to Wil-lie Brown, then mayor of San Francisco, that racial preferences for blacks couldhurt whites, he replied, “I don’t careabout your idiot kids.” Mr. Brown’spolitical career suffered no harm.

Charles Barron of the Brooklyn city

council once explained at a rally forreparations for slavery, that he some-times wants to go up to a white person, tell him, “You can’t understand this, it’sa black thing,” and then “slap him justfor my mental health.”

During his 2002 reelection cam-paign, Sharpe James, mayor of Newark, New Jersey, referred to hislight-skinned black opponent as “thefaggot white boy.” A largely-black

Comments like these would haveruined the careers of white politi-cians.

One of the clearest examples of blacks not having to face the samemusic as whites is from the auto-biography of Nathan McCall, whoworked as a reporter for the WashingtonPost . In Makes Me Wanna Holler , hewrote about an episode from his earlyyears:

“The fellas and I were hanging outon our corner one afternoon when thestrangest thing happened. A white boy. . . came pedaling a bicycle casuallythrough the neighborhood. . . . Some-body spotted him and pointed him out

to the rest of us. ‘Look! What’s thatmotherfucka doin’ ridin’ through here?!

Cavalier Boulevard and knocked him off the bike. . . . Ignoring the passing cars,we stomped him and kicked him. My

stick partners kicked him in the head andface and watched the blood gush fromhis mouth. I kicked him in the stomachand nuts, where I knew it would hurt.Every time I drove my foot into his balls,

I felt better . . . one dude kept stomping,like he’d gone berserk . . . . When he

the white dude’s bike, lifted it as high ashe could above his head, and slammedit down on him hard. . . . We walkedaway, laughing, boasting, competingfor bragging rights about who’d donethe most damage.”

Mr. McCall expressed no regrets forthis brutality, and this and subsequentbooks were so successful he had to

“We walked away, laugh-

ing, boasting, competingfor bragging rights aboutwho’d done the most

damage.”

Couldn’t dare call him “PorkChop.”

leave the Post to meet the demand forhis lectures.

Whites, on the other hand, can’t evenname sports teams without checkingwith the diversity police, but the deckis stacked against them whichever waythey turn. A team named the “Rebels”is unacceptable because it glorifiesslave-owning Confederates but the name“Indians” is unacceptable because itinsults Native Americans. Obviously, what is going on here has nothing todo with consistency, but with trying

hector whites. It is obvious that the Army named

an attack helicopter the Apache out of

The people who named teams the At-lanta Braves or Washington Redskinsclearly felt the same way. In any case,Rebels have been more or less wiped

out, and activists are hard at work try-ing to exterminate the few Indians whosurvive. In 2009, a 17-year lawsuit to

end only because the US Supreme Courtrefused to hear it. In California, activistspersuaded the legislature to forbid theuse of any Indian-related team name byany public school, except for schoolsnear “Indian-controlled land.” Indianson reservations are the only people whocan use Indian names.

The Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania,Triple-A baseball team, the IronPigs has

a large, furry pig mascot. Two days afternaming it “PorkChop,” the team had tochange it because a Hispanic said it was

-

dent of the Latino Leadership Alliance, said that decades earlier he had beencalled “pork chop.” The team ownerssaid they had never heard of the term be-ing used that way—neither have I—butthey renamed the pig “Ferrous.”

Houston wanted to name its soccerteam the Houston 1836 after the yearthe city was founded, but Harris CountyCommissioner Sylvia Garcia led His-panics in a campaign against the name. She said it was no good because that wasthe year Sam Houston defeated SantaAna’s army at San Jacinto, securingTexas independence. That should havemade the name even better, but the teamowner folded and changed the name tothe Houston Dynamo.

Occasionally some misguided white

person tries to stand up to the pres-sure, but he usually doesn’t last long.

to time, and between 2005 and 2008,

the legislatures of Alabama, Maryland,New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia,

because their states had once permittedslavery. One Virginia delegate, 79-year-old Frank Hargrove, was having none of it. There’s been no slavery for 140 years,

get over it.” Of course, the heavens fellon poor Mr. Hargrove, and he quicklywilted. He didn’t just change his mindand express the “profound contrition”required of the apology. He went evenfurther and introduced a proposal tomake Juneteenth—June 19, 1865, whenthe last slaves found out they werefree—a Virginia state holiday.

The great irony in all this self-

other whites who make it possible tokeep whitey in a state of fear. There isno better way to advertise racial virtue

than to kick a fellow white after he hasbeen smacked down for “insensitivity.”If at least a few whites in the Virginialegislature had stood with Mr. Hargrove,he might have stuck to his original, sensible guns, but he was a target tootempting for other whites to resist. Spit-ting on him was an irresistible chanceto prove that elusive negative: that theywere not “racists.”

In his excellent book White Guilt ,black author Shelby Steele argues con-vincingly that black power exists only asa byproduct of white guilt. Blacks have

nothing like enough real power to pushwhites around if whites locked arms andrefused to be pushed, but blacks havetwo enormous advantages. First, mostwhites are spineless and give in right

the spineless ones—who only underthese circumstances cease to be inert—gang up on them. It is whites who haveloaded the gun, handed it to blacks, andtold them, “Here’s the trigger, fellas.”And, of course, every other race is nowfully armed.

Signs of change?

Are things changing? There maybe some signs that they are. BarackObama’s endless spending and his ideasabout medicine have stirred up vehementopposition, almost exclusively fromwhites. Lefties insist this is “racism.”Actress Janeane Garofalo—althoughwhy anyone pays attention to inconse-quential twits like her is a mystery—saidof the anti-tax Tea Parties, “This is aboutThey’re all white so they must be racists.

themselves. What is most striking about these

accusations of “racism” is that they area virtual admission that whites do havesound racial reasons for objecting tohigh taxes and new handouts. No oneknows how many whites have con-scious, racial motives for yelling abouthigh taxes and “Obamacare.” The factremains that they have every reason tooppose yet more government indebted-ness their grandchildren will have to pay

Whenever there is debate about govern-ment spending and lefties accuse theiropponents of “racism,” you can be surethat the plan is to milk whitey.

So far, these accusations aren’t work-

ing. Whites who have no racial motiveand just oppose creeping socialism aregetting angry about the name-calling.Whites who do have a conscious racialmotive already know it and certainlyaren’t going to change their minds justbecause actresses and Princeton profsstart screeching. Very few whites areactually going to admit to racial motives, but, for now, it doesn’t matter.

bit with the system, he will be badlywounded. The great black hope is prov-ing to be dangerously vulnerable, and nomatter what happens, he will be badlybattered even before he brings up theissue that really matters: amnesty forillegal immigrants.

That is when whites will show wheth-er they have been completely denaturedor whether they are capable of doingsomething in their own interests—anddoing it in their own name. There will

make the current debate about medicinelook like a minuet. White people areslowly getting angry enough to say itout loud: that they refuse to sit quietlywhile their rulers turn the United Statesinto a Third-World dung heap. This willbe one of the all-time great battles overthe future of the country, and there is anexcellent chance we will win.

Mr. Trueaxe is a Washington, DC-area businessman.

Whenever there is debateabout government spend-

The 1890 census had a relativelysimple way of counting Americans. Itdivided whites into three categories:34,358,348 native whites, 11,583,075

native whites with foreign parents, and 9,121,807 foreign whites. Theyaccounted for nearly 88 percent of the

total population. In addition, the censusreported 6,337,980 Negroes, 956,989Mulattoes, 105,135 Quadroons, 69,936

Octoroons, 107,475 Chinese, 2,039

Quadroons are technically more whitethan black, and a Quadroon would notreally be telling a lie if he said he was

In the 2000 census, 12.9 percent of the population said it was black, andonly 0.6 percent claimed to be black plussome other race. Many more blacks than

that are mixed, so it is interesting thatonly a small number either know theyare mixed or cared enough to say so onthe census form. Most blacks appear tobe following the “one drop rule.”

This year’s census form asks whetheryou are Hispanic before it even asksyour race, and it lists many options:

In case these choices are not enoughyou can check “some other race” and

print whatever you like. The Census Bureau doesn’t under-

stand race. It seems to think Japanese,Chinese, and Koreans are differentraces, and explicitly offers “Thai” or“Cambodian” as racial categories. Thoseare not racial categories any more than“French” or “English” would be. It isinteresting that the bureau counts the

nationalities but throws all “whites” intothe same pot.

We are told that Hispanics can be of any race, but if that were true, it wouldbe logical to classify them by race andeliminate the Hispanic category. Span-iards—who are European but can claimto be Hispanic—would call themselveswhite, and most Latin Americans wouldbe South American Indians, along withsome number of Africans or Negroes. It is just as well the census has a “His-

include non-white Portuguese speakers. This made it possible to keep the raciallines neatly drawn in a consistently anti-white manner despite the Census Bu-

The “white” category, however, isunsatisfactory because it includes peoplewho are clearly not white: Arabs, Per-sians, Afghans, and North Africans. TheCensus Bureau, which is at such pains todistinguish between Fijian and Tongan“races,” apparently thinks Egyptiansare no different from Scots—they’re“white.” Some people suspect this is adodge to keep the decline in the percent-age of whites from looking even morealarming than it already does, but it’sprobably just bureaucratic stupidity.

I would recommend that the CensusBureau eliminate the white category

and replace it with three others: Euro-peans, Arabs, and West Asians. Perhapsit should even divide Europeans intoNorthern Europeans and Southern Eu-ropeans; after all, a Neapolitan looksmore different from a Dane than a Ko-rean does from a Chinese. If the census

for whites would drop below 50 percenteven sooner than the current forecast of 2042 or so. This is a milestone manyliberals look forward to; why not givethem this victory a little earlier?

To further complicate things, manyanthropologists believe all humans havea common ancestor who lived near whatis today Kenya about 150,000 years ago.If that is true, everyone could say hewas African or African American. This

is handy when you apply to college orfor a job. If someone tells you you arenot an African American you can reply,“My ancestors are from Africa. I hopeyou are not going to discriminate againstme because my skin is lighter than thatof some of my cousins.”

When whites get their 2010 census

I suggest that they check the “other” box

country of origin. Another option wouldbe to honor their ancestors of 150,000years ago and say they are AfricanAmerican. Or is it more important to getresults that can be compared to previouscensuses so we will know what is hap-pening to our country?

The Belgian Government Applies Sharia LawEuropean “submission” toIslam.

by Guillaume

People are generally unaware of what is going on in their owncountry because the media cover

up so many important facts. La Dernière Heure [a French-language Belgian dailypaper] somehow failed to toe the linein a recent article, in which it reportedthat pork is no longer served in a num-ber of prisons, including the prison of Forest-Bruxelles [a prison for women inBrussels], and that pork was taken off

the menu several years ago. Ittre prison[a luxury prison with single cells thatopened near Forge de Clabecq in 2002]can accommodate all manner of dietarywhimsies, religious or not. Accordingto La Dernière Heure , 80 percent of the inmates at Forest-Bruxelles areMuslims—this fact itself is not usuallyfor public consumption.

Because pork must not be handledwith the same utensils used for cookinghalal [Muslim kosher] meals, having

pork was forbidden for Muslims, theywould simply ban it for all prisoners. Ithas become the rule in this country thatBelgium adapts to Muslims and not the

students were keeping halal and whichwere not. The solution was, again, toeliminate pork from the menu for allstudents, so that what is banned forsome is banned for all.

The same goes for dress codes forgirls in public schools. The traditionalBelgian dress codes must make wayfor Sharia. According to the Islamists,to forbid veils would be an act of Is-lamophobic, racist dictatorship. Theydemand “submission”—that is whatIslam means, after all—rather thanadopt the customs of the countries inwhich they live. It is this intransigence

that is pushing Sharia so successfullyin Europe; according to press reports, there are already 80 Sharia tribunalsin Britain.

Building nations in the name of empire.

it is not optimistic.Back in 2004, when it was clear to all

observers outside of the White Housethat George W. Bush’s Iraq strategy

presidential aide explained to New York Times reporter Ron Suskind that the “re-

ality-based community” was outmodedand that it was a mistake to “believe thatsolutions emerge from your judiciousstudy of discernible reality.” The aidewent on:

“That’s not the way the world reallyworks anymore. We’re an empire now,and when we act, we create our ownreality. And while you’re studying thatreality—judiciously, as you will—we’llact again, creating other new realities,

which you can study too, and that’s howthings will sort out. We’re history’s ac-tors . . . and you, all of you, will be leftto just study what we do.”

What that statement illustrates—aside from the astonishing arrogance of the Bush administration—is what Mr.

We Are Doomed as the central failing of the modernconservative movement: its inability toaccept reality, whether in foreign policy, education, immigration, or for that mat-ter, nearly any other aspect of society.Conservatism, he writes, “has been

fatally weakened by yielding to infantiletemptations: temptations to optimism, towishful thinking, to happy talk, to cheer-ily preposterous theories about humanbeings and the human world.”

As a result, conservatism cannotgive society the dose of cold, hard real-ity it needs to deliver itself from thesetemptations. Thus we foolishly try to

uneducated Somalis and expect them-

sume that all inner-city blacks could goto Harvard if only we shoveled enoughmoney at them. A true conservative, Mr.Derbyshire argues, is by nature pessi-mistic. He understands the fallen natureof mankind, and ought to pour cold wa-ter on any attempts at mass uplift. That

conservatives do notdo this shows onlyhow successful theliberals have been atgetting them to swal-

their agenda.Needless to say,

the vast majority of Americans who callthem “conservatives”are abusing the lan-guage. As the lateSam Francis usedto point out, anyone

who isn’t even inter-ested in conservinghis own racial stock is

a freak, and certainly not a conserva-tive. And when so-called conservativesadopt the Left’s puerile optimism aboutrevamping human nature and transform-ing the world, they are not so muchconservatives as dupes.

It has not always been this way. Mr.Derbyshire reminds us that America’sFounding Fathers were a pessimisticlot, given their Calvinist religion andthe unforgiving nature of life in the

early colonies, where death—whetherfrom disease, childbirth, accident, orIndian—was a constant companion. If the early settlers were inclined to forgetthis, “there were always bears, wolves, and crop failures to remind them of thebiological facts.” As America grew, and the frontier advanced beyond theEastern seaboard, the “optimistic rot”began to set in. Calvinism gave way toUnitarianism, which paved the way forTranscendentalism, which led to thebirth of “the modern style of vaporoushappy talk.” Mr. Derbyshire observes

that the reformers abolished slavery, im-proved the social condition of women, reduced “promiscuous drunkenness”and some other things, but over time, these blessings turned into blights.

Improving the lot of workers led to“featherbedding, the Teamster rackets, auto companies made uncompetitive by

government unions voting themselves-

paign for full civil rights and racial jus-

quotas, grievance lawsuits, the ReverendJeremiah Wright, and everlasting racialrancor.” As early as Prohibition, it wasclear that progressives were at war withhuman nature itself, a war that continuesto this day.

There are many fronts in the waragainst human nature, and the bulkof We Are Doomed is spent survey-ing them. First up is diversity, which,Mr. Derbyshire writes, is nothing tocelebrate. Much of what he cites, fromthe work of Harvard professor RobertPutnam to individual examples of ra-

(see, for example, “Diversity DestroysTrust” in the September 2007 issue),but he does have an entertaining spin.He regards diversity as a cult and a falseideology, and notes that the “downsideof ethnic diversity will keep cropping

up throughout my book” (it does). Mr.Derbyshire understands the diversitymindset quite well, and boils it down toits essence as follows:

“Different populations, of differentraces, customs, religions, and prefer-ences, can be mixed together in anynumbers or proportions at all, withharmonious results. Not only will the

results be harmonious, they will be

They will be better and happier than if they had been left to stagnate in dullhomogeneity.”

This is hogwash, of course, but thereare people who believe it. Mr. Der-byshire refers to them—the lawyers, educators, corporate and governmentbureaucrats who make their livingsshilling for diversity—as “Diversicrats,”and fears that they will never give up.

corroded by an ideology that is “demon-strably— easily demonstrably—false”and is particularly disappointed that somany conservatives, who should knowbetter, have embraced it. By doing so,they “have surrendered key politicalpositions: equal treatment under thelaw, allegiance to one nation, freedomof association, public education in onelanguage . . . .” Had conservatives notgiven in to the Diversicrats, “we mighthave maintained the principles of a freerepublic, and saved ourselves muchtrouble and expense.”

Mr. Derbyshire is equally disgustedwith politics—“We have . . . lost ourrepublican virtue, traded it in for apassel of gassy rhetoric”—and modern

culture—“It’s not so much the filth aspect of pop culture as the impressionthat there’s nothing there .”

Mr. Derbyshire cites the poetry of at Barack Obama’s inauguration. “Ihad never heard of this lady before thepresident-elect tapped her for the inau-guration spot,” he writes. “Taking a wildshot in the dark, I guessed her to be awhiny black feminist, as most femalepoets are nowadays.” After providingexamples of her work, he writes, “Youcould sum up her thematic range as ‘I’mblack! Black black black! And I have a

of society, and even questions the wis-

dom of women’s suffrage, noting that“women incline to socialism much morenaturally than men.”

Of education, Mr. Derbyshire writes,“There is no area of social policy wherewe see more clearly the destructive ef-fects of the modern epidemic of happytalk, no area where the magical thinkingof our intellectual cheerleaders is soclearly, painfully at odds with cold grimfacts.” He goes on to provide grim factafter grim fact demonstrating that the

Arguably the most important chapterin the book is on human nature, in whichMr. Derbyshire provides a concisesummary of the state of the nature vs.nurture debate, although he prefers theterms Culturist and Biologian. Anyonewho has even a passing familiarity withthe science knows that the Biologianshave the upper hand—decisively so. Tothe extent that the general public doesnot understand this it is testimony tothe power held by the Culturists—whoinclude most of the media and educators.

Conservatives are largely AWOL in this

debate, because many of them adhere toa belief Mr. Derbyshire calls Religion-ist. The Religionists do not accept thescience of the Biologians, which makesthem easy prey for Culturist, diversity-friendly propaganda. Again, for mostAR readers, this is settled territory.

Race realists will also be familiarwith many of the arguments in the chap-

ter on immigration. Mr. Derbyshire haslittle patience for sentimentalism in anyaspect of public policy, and none at allwhen it comes to immigration—whichas he reminds us, is simply anothernational policy, like farm supports ornational parks maintenance. It shouldbe based on the national interest, not on

-tive. Mr. Derbyshire deplores what he

adds, “belongs on the political Left.”The problem with too many of to-

day’s immigrants is not just that they arenot assimilating, but that they are actu-ally ab similating, that is, moving furtheraway from mainstream American soci-ety. This is especially true of Mexicanimmigrants—second and later genera-tions do worse than their parents—andof second-generation Muslims, who arefar more likely than their parents to goradical. And yet to point out this or anyother problem with immigrants leadsto accusations of nativism and racism, often at the hands of conservatives, toomany of whom, Mr. Derbyshire writes,“have been cheerleaders for a vastexperiment in social engineering.” Hecontinues:

“Rather than carefully project theresults of the experiment, they simply

declare those results to be inevitablygood, on no grounds at all but their ownvapid optimism and wishful thinking.Aren’t conservatives supposed to behostile to social engineering schemes? Why do so many conservatives swoonwith approval at this one, while snarl-ing at immigration skeptics as heartlessxenophobes? The question is rhetorical.I have no idea what makes people sostupid and dishonest.”

Mr. Derbyshire is similarly contemp-tuous of conservatives who promote

international crusades to spread democ-racy and engage in nation building, na-ively asserting that American exception-alism will somehow protect us from theconsequences of bad policies, and who

use their positions in government andbusiness to squander American wealthand to bury our children and grandchil-dren under a mountain of debt.

TB Roars BackTuberculosis (TB) kills more adults

worldwide—two million a year—thanany other infectious disease. One inthree people across the globe is infected, though only 10 percent of them willdevelop active TB. The disease hasbeen found in 4,000-year-old Egyptianmummies, and killed as many as one infour Americans and Europeans as late asthe 1850s. In 1944, doctors began treat-ing TB with antibiotics, which were soeffective that by the end of the 1960s,

then-US Surgeon General William H.Stewart announced it was “time to closethe book on infectious diseases and de-clare the war against pestilence won.”

TB is now making a comeback, thanks to misdiagnosis, misuse of an-tibiotics, and immigration. In the ThirdWorld, ill-educated doctors failed totreat TB effectively, and it spread among

West spread it to places where it hadbeen virtually eradicated. Even when

patients often failed to complete thefull course of antibiotics. This let thebacterium mutate into various morepowerful forms: multi-drug resistant(MDR),extensively drug-resistant(XDR) and extremely drug-resistant(XXDR). Doctors estimate there aremore than 500,000 annual cases world-wide of MDR-TB, which cost $100,000each to treat. There are fewer cases of XDR, but it is more lethal, killing 52 of the 53 people who were diagnosed withit in South Africa in 2006. There are onlya handful of XXDR cases worldwide, but it is deadlier still.

“There’s a lot of MDR and XDR-TB

that hasn’t been diagnosed in places likeSouth Africa and Peru, Russia, Estonia,Latvia,” says Dr. Megan Murray, atuberculosis specialist at Harvard. “Wethink it’s a big public health threat.” Dr.Lee Reichman, a TB expert at the NewJersey Medical School, says, “You’rereally looking at a global issue. It’s nota foreign problem, you can’t keep theseTB patients out.”

That sounds like liberal hogwash.Eighty-two percent of American patientswith the various forms of drug-resistantTB are foreign-born. There are ways to

screen immigrants for TB, but to do so -ing on people from certain countries,

Other diseases are developing drug-resistant strains. Scientists say a mutated

form of malaria has been discovered

in Cambodia, a growing number of AIDS patients in Africa are infectedwith a form that is harder to treat, anddrug-resistant staph infections kill morepeople in the US each year than prostateand breast cancer combined. [Margie
