Watch this video message to pilot participants from Acting Director, DHS, Erinn Kelley-Siel.
The OR-Kids pilot starts
April 19 in district 4 (Linn
branch, Benton screening)
and in some central office
units. A central office kick-
off event was held April 14,
and in Albany April 18.
Project sponsors
commented that the start of
pilot is emotional because
of the years of hard work
and planning that have
gotten us to this day. Here’s
a paraphrased compilation
of some remarks (look for a
“car talk” theme!) see page 2

You’ll see things that work well, and some things that are a little clunky. You may wonder “’what were they thinking!” “They” is “we” (looking over audience of many design and UAT business partners). You deserve the best we can do – stay true to safety model – it drives us to excellence. That’s what we were thinking.
As you find something that doesn’t work, don’t think of it as a problem, but rather, that’s interesting. Like an OSM board game. It’s not the end of your effort. Investigate. At the end of 30 days, you can feel proud when OR-Kids rolls out later statewide.
Child welfare culture is ours. We own that. OR-Kids won’t hurt or help. Know that at the moment of pilot, you become ambassadors for OR-Kids. A positive outlook improves the chances of success, for pilot, and for the state.
When I was a kid my dad bought a new car and the driver’s manual said to follow a break-in period, but when we got in for a drive, my dad got it going and put the pedal down. I asked him why and he said “If it’s going to break, wouldn’t you want it to break during warranty?”
We’re ready to bring OR-Kids to you in pilot, but we don’t know how it’ll run until we put gas in it and turn the key. In pilot, put your foot down and try to break OR-Kids. Then we can get the technicians under the hood to fix it for statewide.
“I actually drive a hybrid so we’re going to ‘plug in’ OR-Kids.”
