Swiss 16 PT Personality Test is based upon the work of Carl Gustav Jungas extended by Isabel Briggs-Myers and Katharine Myers. According totheir theory of personality, we can define personality according to fourdimensions. Each dimension has two opposing extremes. In terms of the four dimensions this means:

• Extroversion (E) vs. Introversion (I)

• Sensing (S) vs. iNtuition (N)

• Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)

• Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)

The answers you gave to the test questions allow us to determine whereyour personality type falls within each of these dimensions. Before youlearn your test results, spend a few minutes learning the meaning of eachdimension.

2.2 Preference Clarity IndexYour responses on the Swiss 16 PT Personality Test not only indicate yourpreferences; they also indicate the relative clarity of your preferences —that is, how clear you were in expressing your preference for a particularextreme over its opposite. This is known as the Preference Clarity Index,or PCI.The clarity index ranges from 1 to 30. A PCI of less than 5 indicates al-most no preference on that dimension, a PCI of 5-15 indicates a moderatepreference, a PCI of 15-25 indicates a clear preference and a PCI of over25 indicates a very clear preference.

3.1 Anticipating ChallengesWhen you know your personality type, you can prepare for the challengesof life. You can learn to modify your natural behavior when the situa-tion dictates a more appropriate and effective response. For example, ifyou are a “thinking” person and the situation calls for you to comfort afriend who has lost a parent, you should recognize that you need to show“feeling” rather than merely apply logic. Likewise, if you are a “feeling”person and the situation calls for you to make an important financial de-cision, you should recognize that you need to use your “thinking” skillsrather than relying solely upon your intuition. You should never fall into the trap of justifying inappropriate behaviorbecause of your personality type. If you are introverted, you should chal-lenge yourself to interact with others rather than rudely avoiding them. And, if you are extroverted, you should challenge yourself to let othersspeak rather than dominating a conversation. Also, challenges lessen when you know and understand the personalitytype of others, their strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you knowa person of type ESFJ (caregiver), you can conclude that you can deal bestwith that person by complimenting rather than criticizing.

3.2 Selecting Tasks, Career and PartnersWhen you know your personality type, you are more likely to choose ac-tions, a career and a partner that are best suited to your personality. For example, if you starting a company and you are social (extroverted)and adventurous (perceiving), you might look for a partner who has astructured (judging) personality. Whether your partner is extroverted orintroverted is not as important as having a counter-balance or comple-mentary personality to your adventurous side.Be aware, however, that a complementary but opposite personality typecan pose challenges as opposite personality types may have difficulties incommunicating and understanding one another.

When you know your personality type, you can use that information tochoose a career path that is right for you. As you know, you can have asuccessful career only if you enjoy the work, are comfortable in the workenvironment and have the skills to perform the necessary tasks.Whatever your personality type, there are careers that are appropriate foryour skills and interests and careers that are not. For example, if you areintroverted and thinking oriented, you likely would be happy as a com-puter programmer, scientist or mathematician. However, because youneed logical challenges and lack communication skills, you likely wouldbe unhappy as a nurse, teacher or a social worker.Research shows clear evidence of close correlations between personalitytypes and success or failure in jobs. Successful computer programmersare often INTJs, ISTJs, ISTPs or INTPs. It is rare to find a successfulcomputer programmer who is extroverted or feeling-oriented. Similarly, successful actors are often ESFPs, ENFPs, ESFJs or ENFJs. It is rare tofind actors who are introverted or who are both thinking-oriented andjudging-oriented.For this reason, personality tests, based on the work of Carl Gustav Jungand Myers-Briggs, are very popular with recruiters. Recruiters are wellaware of the fact that some personality types are predestined for successor failure at certain jobs. Therefore, many companies analyze personalityprofiles of job candidates to determine candidate's likely success at jobopenings.

Your relationships with friends as well as with a boyfriend/girlfriend orhusband/wife are important to your life. Although these human rela-tionships are necessary for any human being, they also pose challenges. When you know your personality type, you can select compatible relation-ships and anticipate the challenges you may face in each.

5.1 Anticipating Relationship ChallengesMany relationship challenges relate to the personality types of the friendsor partners. For example, personality types INTJ (scientist) and ESFJ (caregiver) cananticipate challenges simply because of their dissimilarities. The scientistis interested in solving problems based upon logical thinking and tendsto avoid social situations. The caretaker is interested in solving problemsbased upon feelings and is most comfortable in social situations. Bothparty may become annoyed and withhold the needed approval of the otherparty.Neither the ESFJ personality type nor the INTJ personality type is wrong;it is just that the personality types do not match well and pose major chal-lenges. Being consciously aware of these differences will help both part-ners anticipate and overcome these challenges.

5.2 Selecting your Partners and FriendsPersonality types indicate which relationships likely will be successful orunsuccessful. The fact is that most people have successful relationshipswith persons of a similar personality type …the closer the similarity, themore successful the relationship. How do we know this? Researchers studied large samples of success-ful friendships/relationships as well as unsuccessful friendships/relation-ships and compared the personality type of the people involved. Theyfound that usually similar personality types have good and lasting friend-ships/relationships while opposite personality types incur many chal-lenges.There is an exception to this rule: for “love relationships” betweenboyfriend and girlfriend or husband and wife, opposites attract! However,“opposites” does not mean complete opposites such as INTP and ESFJ orISFP and ENTJ. Rather only opposites on two dimensions can attract: theextraversion/introversion dimension as well as the judging/perceiving di-mension. For example, INTP could be a good match with ENTJ but not agood match with ISFP.There is little evidence and much speculation on why opposites on the ex-traversion/introversion dimension and the judging/perceiving dimensionattract for love relationships. One theory is that we look to a romanticpartner for balance and completion. We subconsciously know our per-sonality type and look for a person to provide the qualities we lack. Froma practical point of view, this makes sense. We know what happens when two introverts or two extroverts get to-gether: there is silence or chaos. Likewise, when two persons who likestructure or two persons who like adventure get together: there is bore-dom or lack of security. It seems that a couple composed of an introvertand an extrovert and a person who is structured and one who is moreadventurous are more successful. But remember, this is true only of love relationships.
