On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for

Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001, he became a Certified Covey Trainer of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan women’s basketball. I am confident that Coach Jess Strom, her staff and the players will continue to build upon the basketball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2010-11 academic year, a total of 225 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 245 student-athletes earned the honor during the Fall 2010 semester. For the 10th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as the new Convocation Center. Women’s Basketball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2011-12 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

UNIVERSITY PROFILEABOUT US California University of Pennsylvania, a comprehensive regional institu-tion of higher education and a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, is a diverse, caring and scholarly learning community dedi-cated to excellence in the liberal arts, science and technology, and profession-al studies that is devoted to building character and careers, broadly defined. The University is inspired by its core values of Integrity, Civility and Respon-sibility and is guided by its Bill of Rights and Responsibilities: We have the right to safety and security; We have the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of others; We have the right to be treated with respect; We have the responsibility to treat others with respect; We have the right to expect the best; We have the responsibility to give our best; We have the right to be treated fairly; We have the responsibility to treat others fairly.

MISSION: BUILDING CHARACTER AND CAREERS To advance its ultimate mission of building the character and careers of students, the University shall focus its efforts on three goals: student achieve-ment and success, institutional excellence, and community service. These interrelated ends will be facilitated by the following means: high quality fac-ulty, students, programs and facilities. These means, in turn, will be funded through an energetic program of resource acquisition and stewardship.

LEGACY Founded in 1852, and now in its second 150 years of service, the Univer-sity is committed above all to academic excellence and intellectual rigor in the context of personal and institutional Integrity, Civility and Responsibility.

THE CAMPUS Cal U’s 190-acre campus is nestled on a bend of the Monongahela River in the borough of California, Pa., 35 miles south of Pittsburgh. One of the first things you’ll notice when you visit for the first time is the natural beauty. Tree-lined lawns, broad walkways and exquisite landscaping surround restored historic buildings and new residence halls that have been recognized by the National Building Museum as among the finest in the nation. The Arboretum at California University of Pennsylvania is a public garden encompassing our 92-acre lower campus. We’re building an extensive collec-tion that includes examples of nearly every tree indigenous to Pennsylvania. Lovely stained glass windows featuring Pennsylvania wildflowers, which grace the Grand Hall of Old Main, were created by Leslie Parkinson, emeri-tus professor of art. Another favorite site is the Manderino Library Gallery, an intimate space that features exhibitions from the Carnegie Museum of Art and other top museums and private collections. Take time to stroll through our sculpture garden, which features the magnificent “Ascent of Humanity” sculpture near the Duda World Cultures Building. At Cal U, we’re small enough to feel like family, yet large enough to offer variety and diversity. Spend some time getting to know us! Take a virtual tour online, come visit or request information to learn more about campus life at Cal U.

CAMPUS LIFE Cal U is known for its diverse and dedicated student body, nationally rec-ognized housing, recently renovated facilities, varied events and activities and countless opportunities to get involved. You’ll find a strong sense of com-munity and traditions guided by the spirit of service and a sense of pride. In short, you’ll find a home here at Cal U.

LIVING AT CAL U If you are a first-time freshman from outside commuting distance to the University, you will reside in University housing for the first four semesters of your college career as space permits. But you won’t find dorms at Cal U. Here students live “The Suite Life,” enjoying roomy suites in new buildings. All six of Cal U’s residence halls have been built in recent years. Along with comfortable rooms, the halls feature well-designed common areas for social-izing, including lounges with large-screen TVs and DVD players, as well as full kitchen areas and comfortable seating, not to mention rec rooms with ping pong and pool tables. Community assistants serve as leaders and facilitators within each hall. These students (graduate or undergraduate) live on designated floors and as-sist in overall operation. All are available through an on-call system 24 hours a day, with schedules and contact information posted throughout the building. The community assistants dedicate considerable time and effort to develop-ing community. They help students understand and comply with University and residence hall rules, and they plan programs and activities to help make the most of the residence hall experience. Residence hall directors supervise each hall and work to ensure living on campus is productive and safe. These professionals (who have master’s de-grees related to education and student development) live in the halls. The residence hall directors assist individuals and student groups, encourage community development, promote academic success, handle hall conduct is-sues, supervise student staff and act as the liaison for facility issues.

VISIT US It’s never too early to see how you will fit in at California University of Pennsylvania. Throughout the year we host several special events designed for everyone from high school juniors to students who have already applied. You can also schedule an individual visit that includes a meeting with an ad-missions counselor. Individual visits start at the Welcome Center on the first floor of the Eberly Science and Technology Building. This is the place to pick up literature about the University, watch a video and take a campus tour with a student ambas-sador. At the end of the tour, you will sit down with one of our admissions counselors and get answers to your specific questions. Plan to spend about two hours and 30 minutes when you visit, and feel free to bring your family or a couple of friends.

CONVOCATION CENTER

THE CONVOCATION CENTER AT CAL U The Convocation Center at Cal U is the latest addition to the campus of Cal U. The facility is the new home of Vulcan basketball. The arena also will be used for Commencement, convocations and other campus gatherings. Cal U plans to host athletic tournaments, trade shows, job fairs, country music concerts and other public events in this spacious facility. The Convocation Center will be available for executive-level conferencing. Located on the shores of the Monongahela River, just 35 miles from Pittsburgh, it will be the heart of River’s Bend, a full-service conferencing service. The 142,000-square-foot Convocation Center is a model of “smart” technology, the hub of campus activities and a destination for visitors from southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond.

It took approximately two years for this landmark structure to rise at California University of Pennsylvania.

This state-of-the-art building houses a 6,000-seat arena, the largest indoor venue between Pittsburgh and Morgantown, W.Va.

This 142,000-square-foot building gives Cal U much needed space to welcome the families of graduating seniors and master’s degree candidates to enjoy Commencement together in comfortable surroundings.

An 80-foot tower that stands alongside the building announces its high-tech character with scrolling text and digital images displayed along its sides.

The Convocation Center was a $59 million project. Nearly 400 laborers and skilled workers have worked at the Convocation Center site.

Cal U will feature a new identity in 2011-12, following the graduation of All-American and PSAC West Athlete of the Year Kayla Smith. Smith finished her career as the school’s all-time leading rebounder and scored over 2,000 points. The Vulcans will be keyed by a pair of veteran seniors in forward Amy Johns and guard Danielle Luckett, who were both with the program when it advanced to the Elite Eight in 2009. A preseason All-PSAC West selection, Johns has started 61 games over the last two years and is the team’s most consistent scorer. Last year, she finished second on the team and ninth in the league with 15.5 points per game. Johns proved to be a threat from long range, shooting 30.6 percent from three-point territory after making only six three-pointers the previous year. The 5-10 senior will also be a key player in the post, as she averaged a career-high 6.6 rebounds per game last season. One of three team captains, Luckett posted a breakout season in her first year as a starter, ranking third on the team with 10.5 points per game. The 5-5 guard excelled offensively when driving the lane, shooting 45.2 percent from the field and making 75.3 percent from the free-throw line. In starting all 31 games, Luckett finished second on the team with 64 steals, which more than doubled her previous career total. As a compliment to Johns’ inside game and Luckett’s slashing ability, the Vulcans return a pair of junior guards - Megan Kermond and Stephanie Michael - capable of hitting shots from the beyond the arc. Both Kermond and Michael were selected as team captains after helping the program win nearly 50 games over the last two seasons. Michael led the team with 51 three-pointers last season, while shooting 35.2 percent from three-point territory. She has started 45 games over the last two seasons and scored a career-high 7.2 points per game last year. Kermond continued to be one of the top reserves for Cal U, appearing in all 31 games with one start. She led the team and ranked among the

league leaders by hitting 37.3 percent from beyond the arc after more than tripling her attempts from her freshman year. With guard Kate Seebohm out indefinitely due to health reasons, sophomore Ryah Gadson and newcomer Chelsea McKnight will direct the offense. Gadson appeared in 26 games with 16 starts as a true freshman, collecting 59 assists and 43 steals. She also displayed the ability to shoot from beyond the arc, making 41.7 percent on limited attempts. McKnight played on two state championship teams while at Harvest Prep, located outside of Columbus. Redshirt junior Amber Boyd and true freshman Irina Kukolj will also see action in the backcourt this season. Boyd previously played at Evansville (Ind.), a NCAA Division I program, after setting an Ohio high school state record for three-pointers. Kukolj brings tremendous size to the guard position after playing scholastically in Virginia. With experienced depth in the backcourt, sophomore Elena Antonenko will see extensive action this year in the post. The 6-2 forward played all 31 games last year off the bench, averaging about three points and three rebounds in 11.5 minutes per game. The Vulcans will also look to a trio of newcomers to help fill the void in the post left by Smith, who ranked third in the country last season in rebounding. Freshman Emma Mahady has the skill sets to play both the perimeter and interior with her 5-11 frame. Newcomer Selena Adamshick was an all-state selection and conference Player of the Year while playing at Lake Lehman, which is outside of Wilkes-Barre. Junior transfer Alice Abiya, who is one of four players on the roster at 6-0 or taller, will also contend for time in the post after playing the last two seasons at Garrett Community College in Maryland. The Vulcans return several key members of a team that advanced to the PSAC Championship for a record 11th-straight year. Cal U should again be a contender in the PSAC, while also looking to make another appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

A former four-year starter at Penn State, Jess Strom enters her sixth season on the coaching staff with the California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball program. She was appointed interim head coach of the Vulcans in early December 2011. While with the program, she has helped lead the Vulcans to five-straight berths in the NCAA Tournament with Elite Eight appearances in 2008 and 2009. Cal U has also advanced to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Game in each of the last five years. Strom previously mentored two-time Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-American Brooque Williams, who finished her career as the school’s all-time leading scorer. Williams, the 2009 PSAC West Athlete of the Year and three-time All-PSAC First-Team selection, also set the school and conference record for career steals. While playing for the Lady Lions, Strom helped Penn State compile a 93-38 overall record (.710) with a 52-12 mark (.813) in Big Ten play. From 2002-05, the Lady Lions won a pair of Big Ten regular-season titles. Strom ranks third in Penn State history with 191 career three-pointers and 310 steals. She also finished her career among

the all-time leaders in assists (776) and points (1,466). During her collegiate career, Strom was one of the best free-throw shooters in Penn State history. She set single-game school records for most free-throws made, consecutive free-throws made and free-throw percentage after going a perfect 15-for-15 in 2005 against Minnesota. She holds the fifth (.877, 71-of-81) and sixth (.872, 129-of-148) best single-season free-throw percentages in Lady Lion history. A three-time All-Big Ten selection, Strom finished her Penn State career as one of only four players to register 1,000

points and 750 assists in a career. She was a two-time winner of the Tom Caldwell Award, which was given in recognition of the “Unsung Hero” on the Lady Lion team. Strom has coached at Penn State’s basketball camps and hosted private individual instruction opportunities since 2002. She also coached the 2005 Pittsburgh Rockers, an AAU team that participated in several national tournaments, and has been active in Special Olympics and Easter Seals programs.

The California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team has been a program with tremendous success over the years. Dating back to the inception of the program in the 1970’s, the women’s basketball program has produced talented individuals both on and off the court. From a perennial conference power throughout the 1980’s and 90’s to a program now that garners the national spotlight each and every year. In 1985 when Paul Flores took over the Cal U program, he had his work cut out for him. It was a relatively new program that hadn’t experienced a great deal of success. As he struggled in his first year finishing the season with a 2-24 overall record, he set out to turnaround the program and he did just that. In his second and third seasons, he improved the Vulcans’ records to 10-16 and 15-12, respectively. Then in his fourth year controlling the reigns to the program, the Cal U women’s team took a turn for the better and hasn’t looked back since they finished the 1988-89 season with a 19-8 record. Coach Flores then guided the Vulcans over the next six years with an impressive 106-56 record. During his tenure, he coached some of the Vulcans’ all-time greats. Current assistant coach Anne Malkowiak played for Coach Flores and still holds the career record for three-point percentage and single-season records for free-throw and three-point percentages en route to being inducted in the Athletic Hall of Fame. Other Hall of Fame inductees that played for Coach Flores include Lara Thornton who finished her Vulcan career with a then-school record 1,892 points, Corinne Vanderwal who still holds the career record for field-goal percentage at an astonishing 67.7 percent, Sandy Stodolsky, Traci Cox, and Tammy McIntire, who holds the all-time record for free-throws made. Once Coach Flores decided to retire, the Vulcans looked to Tom Kendall to continue the successful ways that had been laid down before him. During his short five-year stint, Kendall had a combined record of 76-56. When Tom Kendall decided to step down, the Cal U athletic administration decided to go in a different direction and hire up-and-coming coach Darcie Vincent. In her first season, Vincent led a well-balanced team that showed a lot of promise and finished the year with an overall record of 19-10. This was the groundwork that needed to be laid as the next seven years proved to be some of the best the Vulcan program had seen as Coach Vincent tallied a 212-47 record. She led the Vulcans to a pair of Elite

Eight appearances, two Final Four a p p e a r a n c e s and the ultimate goal of a National Championship in 2004. Vincent also coached some of Cal U’s most successful student-athletes in school history including Hall of Famers Sara McKinney, Sameera

Philyaw, Beck Siembak and Megan Storck. McKinney broke Thornton’s scoring record and finished her career as a three-time WBCA All-American, and Siembak was tabbed the National Player of the Year as a junior in 2003. Since Vincent left after the 2008 season, the Cal U women’s team has had a pair of coaches in two seasons. In 2009, long-time Vincent assistant Heather Kearney took control of the program, leading them the NCAA Elite Eight where they were defeated by Franklin Pierce. After just one season Kearney decided to coach with Vincent at Appalachian State in North Carolina and the search began for another head coach. The Vulcans looked at the last team to beat them and hired Mark Swasey away from Franklin Pierce to take over the Vulcan

program. In his first year, Swasey didn’t miss a beat as he led Cal U to a 24-8 record and into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Leading the Vulcans was guard Brooque Williams, who reset the school’s

scoring record. Forward Kayla Smith also played a vital role in leading Cal U throughout the year, as she garnered all-conference and all-region recognition. Last season, Smith earned WBCA All-America honors and was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Year after setting the all-time school record for rebounds and

leading the PSAC in scoring. Last year also marked the end of an era, as the men’s and women’s basketball teams closed out the 2010-11 season in Hamer Hall. Many victories were won and memories made in Hamer Hall, but the Vulcan basketball programs will have a new home in the 6,000-seat Convocation Center. This new building will be a state-of-the-art facility that will feature premier amenities..

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
