Th e IUP women’s basketball team is full of new faces this year as they look forward to the 2011-12 season with only four players returning from last year’s 19-8 squad that went 10-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Confer-ence Western Division, advancing to the con-ference semifi nals.

Th e Crimson Hawks tip off the season with a pair of exhibition games before open-ing the brand new Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex against Goldey-Beacom on November 11.

IUP will have to replace one of the best all-around players in the entire conference in point guard Lacey Claar. Th e fi rst team All-PSAC West selection fi nished near the top of the league in several statistical categories, including second in free throw percentage (87.5) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (118-73, 1.6), while leading the team in assists and minutes played and coming in second to leading returning scorer Sarah Pastorek with 321 points.

“We recognize that it will be a tremen-dous challenge for us to compete in the PSAC with only one returning starter and nine new-

comers, including fi ve freshmen that fi gure to have prominent roles this year.,” said head coach Jeff Dow, who heads into this season with a 64-24 record at IUP. “In the PSAC West alone every team is returning at least three starters and in most cases, four or fi ve.”

Th e Crimson Hawks hope to

stand up to their fi rst place fi nish in the PSAC, and fourth nationally in turnover margin, as

Page 7: 2011-12 IUP Women's Basketball Media Guide

they forced 25 turnovers a game while giving the ball up 17 times themselves. “It essentially translates into eight more shot opportunities a game which is huge,” said Dow. With the in-coming perimeter talent set to arrive this year, IUP should continue to succeed in this area.

Last year’s team was ranked third in the PSAC in three-point shooting, but “there is certainly still room for improvement in that area,” according to Dow. With the latest addi-tions of local freshmen Leslie Stapleton, Marita Mathe and Amy Fairman, as well as UMass transfer Talen Watson, it looks as though these four will be big weapons from behind the arc this season.

Every game is important, and each game is seen as motivation for the next one. With the new season and a new home, “the Hawks are looking forward to playing in the Kovalchick Convention Athletic Complex (KCAC). Th ere isn’t a bad seat in the entire arena, the video board is spectacular, and the locker rooms are

phenomenal,” boasted Dow. “We oft en talk about the importance of being a tough team to beat at home and to have the opportunity to play our games at the KCAC is quite a privi-lege.” With this new home court advantage, the Crimson Hawks will aim to go undefeated at home, win the PSAC tournament and advance to the NCAA tournament.

FRONTCOURT

Sarah Pastorek is IUP’s only returning starter, a solid all-around player who has become one of the PSAC’s top and most consistent players in during her two years here. With a player the caliber of Pastorek, she will be looked upon from the newcomers for guidance. But it all won’t be that easy. “Incorporating the new-comers into the fold and to have them quickly grasp what we are trying to accomplish off en-sively and defensively,” will be a struggle, noted Dow.

Last season Pastorek led the Crimson Hawks with an average of 6.9 rebounds per game, free throws made with 135, placing her

Page 8: 2011-12 IUP Women's Basketball Media Guide

11th in school history, and points with 325. She was also fourth on the team in minutes played and had a team-high 56 steals.

Along with Pastorek there is newcomer Ashley Stoner, who will see some extensive playing time in order to take some heat off of Pastorek. Stoner, who is strong in the post with a variety of moves, is also a very physical player and will be a great help inside for the Hawks.

Switching it up this year will be Vianca Tejada, who will see more time in the post this

season aft er averaging 3.6 rebounds per game last year. Tejada will look to help Pastorek and Stoner in the paint but has shown the ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc, hitting 14 three-pointers a season ago.

Coming off the bench will also be fresh-man Melanie Todd. Todd, who has the ability to come up with some tough rebounds, is an extremely athletic and energetic player who will add depth to the frontcourt.

BACKCOURT

With a player like Lacey Claar miss-ing from the lineup, the Hawks look to fi ll her shoes with various newcomers and some re-turning players.

Returner Arika Ullman who lead the PSAC last year with a .455 three-point percent-age, will be an asset from outside the arc for the Hawks, yet her ability to drive to the pe-rimeter is should continue to improve, allow-ing her to be an inside-outside threat.

Helping Ullman is local Marita Mathe, a true point guard from Indiana High School, who is known for pushing the ball on break-aways and can rebound on the defensive end of the fl oor. She will also be dangerous outside the arc as she continues to improve on her three-point shooting.

Amy Fairman, another local player from Marion Center, will contribute in multiple ways for the Hawks in her freshman year. Not only is her shooting dangerous but her pass-ing is excellent and she’s shown great defensive skills with the ability to cause defl ections and interrupt the off enses rhythm.

Leslie Stapleton, Mathe’s high school teammate, will also be an outside threat for IUP in her fi rst year on campus, while Lisa Burton adds further depth.

Jeff Dow enters his fourth season as the head coach of the IUP women’s basketball program after leading the Crim-son Hawks to a record of 19-8, 11-3 in the PSAC West and an appearance in the PSAC Quarterfi nals last season. Dow has a record of 62-24 at IUP and has led the Crimson Hawks to three consecutive PSAC tournament appearanc-es during his tenure. Over the course of his fi rst three years Dow has set school records in winning 10 or more games in three consecutive seasons in PSAC West divisional games and for overall winning per-centage in PSAC West games (.761). Last season’s ac-complishments included road victories over eventual PSAC Champion Edinboro, CACC Champion Goldey-Beacom and PSAC East champion Bloomsburg along with a home win over NCAA tournament qualifi er California. Statisti-cally IUP led the PSAC in scoring defense at 56.0 points per game and were ranked 19th in the country in that category. The Crimson Hawks also led the PSAC in turnover margin and fi nished 4th nationally for that statistic. Under the guidance of Dow, three Crimson Hawks

received All-PSAC recognition honors in 2010-11 for the fi rst time in their careers. Senior guard Lacey Claar was named All-PSAC West fi rst team, senior forward Eryn With-

ers All-PSAC West second team, and sophomore forward Sarah Pastorek was named to the All-PSAC West second team after be-ing named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year in the 2009-10 season. IUP achieved its success in 2009-19 despite losing three four-year starters who combined to score over 4,000 points, includ-ing two-time All-American Jahzinga Tracey. Among the players Dow added to the program after the 2008-09 season were Pastorek, who was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year and was one of 10 players named to the Division II

Freshman All-America team. In his fi rst season in 2008-09, Dow set a record for most wins by a fi rst-year IUP head coach, leading the Crim-son Hawks to a record of 26-6 and their third straight PSAC championship. With a victory over Johnson C. Smith in the opening round of the NCAA tournament he became one

of only fi ve Division II coaches to win at least one postseason game in each season between 2005-06 and 2008-09. The Crimson Hawks were ranked as high as seventh in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association national poll and fi nished the year at No. 19. IUP ranked in the top 25 in the nation in scoring defense, fi eld goal percentage defense, scor-ing margin, turnover margin, turnovers forced per game and assist-to-turnover ratio. The Crimson Hawks allowed only 52.4 points per game to set a school record and fi nish sixth in the country in that category. The IUP women’s team also starred academically, posting a 3.26 cumulative grade point average for the 2008-09 school year. Six players earned spots on the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list and senior Kylie Miller was chosen the 2009 IUP Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Dow came to IUP from Anderson where he had a record of 79-17 and his teams earned trips to the East Region tournament each season. Including his three-year record at IUP, Dow has an overall mark of 141-41 (.775) over the past six years (84-18 in conference) with four NCAA tournament appearances, two regular season and two postseason tourna-ment titles during that span. Over the past six years Dow has also scheduled exhibition games with several high level Divi-sion I opponents including UCONN, Duke, Penn State, Vander-bilt, Auburn, Clemson, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech. In nine seasons as a head coach overall, including two at Texas A&M-Kingsville and one at Texas-San Antonio, Dow has a record of 175-90. In Dow’s fi nal season at Anderson in 2007-08, the Trojans were 28-4, won the Conference Caroli-nas regular season title for the second time in three years and defeated Fairmont State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Anderson fi nished the year in the top 10 in the country in won-loss percentage, scoring defense, rebound margin and scoring margin and was ranked as high as No. 12 in the WBCA national poll before fi nishing the year at No. 19. For his team’s accomplishments, Dow was selected the Conference Caroli-nas Coach of the Year. The Trojans were the only team in the region and one of just eight in the nation to win a fi rst round NCAA game in each of Dow’s three seasons. During that time, Anderson

had a record of 52-8 in Conference Carolinas regular season play, won 40 of 42 home games and advanced to the conference tournament fi nal each year, winning the league title in 2006. Off the fl oor senior Kim Haus-man was named the Murphy Osborne Award Recipient in 2006-07as Anderson’s Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete.Anderson also had 20-win campaigns in 2005-06 (27-5) and 2006-07 (24-8). Among the standouts Dow coached were Deidra Langston, the 2007 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year, and Nikki Anthony, who was named the league’s top player in 2008. Langston, Anthony and LaShonda Chiles were All-East Region fi rst team selections and received All-America honors during their careers. Chiles was recog-nized in Dow’s fi rst season at Anderson in 2005-06 after fi nishing third in the nation in scoring. Dow’s 2005-06 squad led the nation in scoring with 83.5 points per game. Dow also has extensive experience on the Divi-sion I level as the fi rst assistant at four schools. In 12 seasons at New Mexico State (1992-96), University of California-Irvine (1996-99), Santa Clara (2000-02) and Colorado State (2002-06), he helped teams earn an overall record of 218-134, a 122-65 mark in conference games and six 20-win seasons. His teams made fi ve postseason appearances, includ-ing four trips to the National Invitation Tournament and a berth in the 2001-02 NCAA tournament with Santa Clara. Dow was part of staffs that won a pair of regular season conference titles, including 1994-95 at New Mexico State and 2000-01 at Santa Clara. A native of Medford, Ore., Dow earned a bach-elor’s degree in psychology and physical education from the University of Oregon in 1988 and a master of sci-ence from the same school three years later. He stayed at his alma mater at the start of his coaching career, serving as a graduate assistant with the Ducks during the 1989-90 season. Dow and his wife, the former Emily Vetere, were married in May 2010 and reside in Indiana.

Jerod Alltop joined the IUP women’s basketball coaching staff in June 2009 and begins his third season as an assistant coach this fall. Alltop serves as the recruiting and video coordinator and strength and conditioning coach. He also has responsibilities in the areas of scheduling and on the fl oor instruction, specifi cally working with the team’s perimeter players. Prior to coming to IUP, Alltop had a pair of tenures at Glenville State, including two years as a student assistant coach and the previous two as a fulltime assistant in addition to a position as an instructor of business. In Alltop’s two seasons as a student assistant coach at Glenville State (2004-05 and 2005-06), the Pioneers made two appearances in the NCAA tournament. Glenville State won the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title in 2005-06, was the East Region runner-up and was ranked No. 13 in the fi nal Women’s Basketball Coaches Association national poll. With most of the same roster in place the following year, the Pioneers rose to as high as No. 2 in the nation and won the East Region title, including a victory over IUP in the championship game. Glenville State had an overall record of 81-42 in Alltop’s four seasons on the staff. Alltop spent the 2006-07 season as a graduate assistant coach and director of basketball operations at Marshall. The Thundering Herd broke even at 15-15 in his one season there, including wins over NCAA tournament qualifi ers Robert Morris and East Carolina. Rawing its over 14,600 enrollment from nearly every state and more than 70 countries. IUP has been recognized in the Princeton Review’s

Best 371 Colleges and Universities in its 2010 edition; Kaplan’s Unofficial Insider’s Guide to the 320 Most Interesting Colleges; Dr. Donald Archer’s Cool Colleges for the Hyper-Intelligent, Self-Directed, Late Blooming and Just Plain Different; and Careers and Colleges Magazine’s annual “Great Schools at Great Prices” feature. With four locations in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains (Indiana, Northpointe, Punxsutawney and Monroeville), which are all easily accessible to Pittsburgh and the Middle Atlantic Region, IUP is the largest of the 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and the only one which is authorized to confer doctoral degrees. There are more than 140 undergraduate major fields of study in 45 academic departments. Education is always in the hands of eminently qualified professors, never graduate students. Students work alongside experienced faculty members at all levels of the curriculum, and most classes are small with a ratio approximately 16 to 1. Mentoring and tutoring services are available in many fields. Every major includes a strong liberal studies component, and eligible students in all fields may enroll in IUP’s Robert E. Cook Honors College, an innovative residential-based program for high-achieving students. Whatever the major, there are many opportunities for internships, student exchange programs and study abroad programs. In addition to being one of the most affordable schools in the nation, more than four out of five IUP students receive some form of financial aid through scholarships, grants and work-study programs. Beginning in May 2006, IUP embarked on a revitalization of its housing planned that has been able to provide 3,900 students with new housing. The fi nal phase which was completed in the Fall of 2010, is the largest of it’s kind in the nation, costing $270-million and has made IUP a school of choice for an expanding number of students. With the wide arrary of specialty fl oors that these living and learning communities offer, allow students with similiar academic interests to live near each other, well allowing students who desire extra quiet, study-intensive fl oors with stricter noise regulations. With information that was provided by the students of IUP, the Foundation for IUP and the university were able to mapp out an aggressive course of action that has led to the replacement of nearly all of the university’s residence halls. There are four different suite confi gurations with the opportunity to share a suite with one person or three. Students have more control over their privacy since some suites offer single sleeping quarters, and they share a bathroom with only one person. Each fl oor in the new suite has laundry facilities, a kitchenette and lounge space as well as ample meeting space. Many offi ces that perform student services are conveniently located in the ground fl oor of these new buildings. A boulevard-style landscaped street is planned to link downtown Indiana to campus and to the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
