CarbondaleCarbondale coach Jim

Miller has a big task aheadof him with only four play-ers returning from lastyear’s team that tied forfourth in the South Seven at3-7 and finished 15-14.

“We’re excited,” Millersaid. “We’re young andinexperienced, but the rea-son I’m looking forward tothe season is because we’revery athletic, so you’regoing see some differentthings from us this year.”

Miller has no returningstarters, but he has someintriguing starting candi-dates in 7-foot center FelipeRech, 6-6 forward/centerSam Strus and guard/for-ward Elijah Bidinger.

“Sam gives us some size,is one of our best jumpersand has a great mid-rangeshot,” Miller said. “Anothergood addition is Felipe. Hehas great footwork, runs thefloor extremely well andplays well with his back to

the basket. Elijah started forus at times last year as afreshman.”

Strus is returning to theteam after spending lastyear in Colorado, whileRech has come toCarbondale from Brazil.

MarionLast year, Marion had a

rough time, finishing last inthe South Seven (2-8) withthe worst record (10-18) inthe league.

“We lost 14 of our 18games last year by two pos-sessions or less, so we wereclose in a lot of ballgames,”

said coach Aaron Mattox.“This year, our guard playhas to improve to reversethat.”

Mattox will have toreplace Aaron Adeoye andeight other players, but hehas two key starters back inpower forward Jared Ellisand shooting guard JuwanTucker.

“Aaron leaves a big holefor us, but we have a littlemore quickness and experi-ence on the perimeter thanwe’ve had in the past,”Mattox said. “We will leanheavily on Big Jared to be aforce inside offensively anddefensively. Juwan playedhis best basketball down thestretch last year as a sopho-more. They give us somethings to build upon.”

One of the new players isformer Carbondale guard,Juju Kizeart. Also back after

missing most of last seasonwith an injury is guardBrody DeMattei.

“Brody is a guy we’recounting on to give us goodleadership both inside andout,” Mattox said.

“We lost a lot from lastyear,” said coach ScottGamber. “Six of our topseven players were seniors,so we are green on experi-ence, but we have a big jun-

ior class this year that got alot of experience over thesummer.”

The lone players whohave starting experience areshooting guard Ty’RilTrimble and guard/forwardClay Payne.

“We bring back Ty’Ril,who started several gamesas a sophomore and severalmore as junior, and Clay, who got to start somegames at the first of the sea-son last year,” Gamber said.“Clay is going to be asked alot of because of our lack ofsize. He is going to have toplay a little bit bigger posi-tion than he has in the past.”

MarionEven though Marion fin-

ished tied for last in theSouth Seven (2-8), theWildcats finished over .500(14-13).

Coach Jeff Tarlton is opti-mistic because he has ayoung and talented teamthis year.

The Wildcats will have anew look with 1,500-pointscorer Lindsay Lenon andtwo other starters graduat-ing and another starter notreturning. The only return-ing starter is point guardIeasha Clark.

“We’re going to be prettyinexperienced, so I thinkwe’ll be as good as Ieasha(Clark) allows us to be,”Tarlton said. “The last cou-ple years, Lindsay scored alot for us, but this year isgoing to be a little more bal-anced with a handful ofgirls averaging five to 10points making it harder todefense us.”

Also returning are juniorguards Cortney and DaileyWilliams and sophomoresguard Emily Dickman andforward/center MontanaSchafer.

“Cortney and Dailey canshoot the ball and have achance to start, but regard-less they are going to play aton of minutes,” Tarltonsaid. “Emily can play pointand both her and Ieasha canplay defense. Montana canshoot the ball for a big kid.”

Coach: Jeff TarltonSeniors: IEASHA CLARK, 5-4, g; Taylor

Mount VernonLast year, in coach Jeff

Lonnon’s second season atthe helm, the Lady Rams(8-19) saw improvement, but Mount Vernon couldn’tclimb out of the cellar of theSouth Seven, finishing tiedfor last at 2-8.

This year, Lonnon returnsall five starters, includinghis only two seniors, All-South point guard CheyenePiper and honorable men-tion all-conference powerforward Jessica Green.

“I think we’re going to bepretty competitive,”Lonnon said. “My first year,we won five. Last year, wewon eight. And this year, wehave the same kids back, soI think they’re ready to stepup this year.”

One silver lining was theplaying experience gainedby juniors Hailey Lockhart,Kelby Kujawa and AaliyahPalmer.

“Piper and Green havestarted since they weresophomores and we haveLockhart, Kujawa andPalmer who all started assophomores last year, so wehave a lot of experienceback,” Lonnon said.

Lonnon’s bench is ninedeep, but it’s short on expe-rience with the exception ofjunior center NatalieWilliamson and sophomoreforwards Claire Ryan andCourtney Scarbrough.

CarbondaleThe Terriers (15-12, 3-7

South Seven) finishedfourth in the conferencelast year and return threestarters, including All-South shooting guardElaina Robinson and pointguard Sarah Goodale.

“This year we’re going tobe running in seven andeight players in a lot, so itwon’t matter who the start-ing five are,” said coachMarialice Jenkins.“Offensively we’re going tohave to get after it and thencause some trouble ondefense to get transitionbaskets.”

Also back is honorablemention All-Stateguard/forward McKenaMiller who started as afreshman. Senior LaceyArmit is the leading candi-date at center with seniorLoren Scott and junior

Zamorrow Glispie in a bat-tle for the open guard spot.

“During the off-seasonLoren and Sarah took uponthemselves to work aboveand beyond and I thinkthey’re going to see that payoff tremendously,” Jenkinssaid. “Robinson and Lorencould be pretty dangerousout on the wings when yougot kids like Goodale,Glispie and Miller who canget to the basket. Glispie’sspeed is deceptive becauseshe has some jets.”

First off the bench isKristy Scally and BryonneWilliams.

“We’re longer athleticallyand have a pretty goodarsenal of shooters, but ourbiggest concern is going tobe muscling it up in thepaint and gettingrebounds,” Jenkins said.“We can’t expect Armit toget all the rebounds, sowe’re going to have torebound by committee.”

regional finals before losingto Salem. This year, coachRoger Stieg has the task ofreplacing his starting back-court including 1,000-point scorer HannahShores.

“The question markswe’re going to have is ourguard play and how well wecan rebound, but our jun-iors are pretty athletic whocan get up and down thefloor,” Stieg said. “We’renot a big group with my twobiggest girls being juniorShantena McClain andAbby Holtkamp.”

Anna-JonesboroWaiting for football sea-

son to come to an end hasbecome a habit for Anna-Jonesboro basketball coachMike Chamness.

The Wildcats were with-out eight players throughthe first week of practicebecause of the footballteam’s success. But whenthey finally return, they willadd to a team considerablytaller and faster than lastseason’s squad that finished15-15.

“It’s been interesting, butwe’ve got a lot of young kidsand it’s been about teachingthem fundamentals anddefensive rotations,”Chamness said. “The guyswho were playing footballknow what’s going on.”

Brady Wright (6-4 for-ward), Travis Smith (6-1guard) and Dalton Baker(6-2 guard) are the threereturning starters forAnna-Jonesboro, which hasseven seniors, one juniorand sophomores Jay Kemp(6-3 forward) and TylerVaughn (5-11 guard) in thevarsity rotation. CartervilleCarterville will have two

returning starters and a lotof older players in 2011-12,but the Lions do not have alot of varsity experience.

Senior Curtis Pitt (6-2center) and junior DaltonBrown (5-9 guard) will leada group of 10 upperclass-men that have paid theirdues on the junior varsityteam the last two seasons.Size is a little bit of a con-cern, with 6-4 sophomorecenter Matt Bigelow as theLions’ tallest player.

“We’re not going to be thebiggest team, but we’repretty athletic,” saidCarterville coach ScottBurzynski. “Hopefully wecan get up and down thefloor and create some easybuckets for the offense.”

The Lions will miss thecontributions of graduatedstandouts Ryan Bonifieldand Drew Bonner, who areboth suiting up for John A.Logan College in 2011-12,but the group that remainsappears hungry to provethemselves.

“We’re in a unique situa-tion in that we have a lot ofolder guys that haven’tplayed a lot of varsity min-utes,” Burzynski said.“They’ve been hungry ingetting to the varsity level

and hopefully those years ofJV have paid off.”

Du QuoinIt’s a fresh start for

Du Quoin this season, afterthe Indians graduated fourstarters and five seniorsfrom a team that went 23-7in 2010-11.

Senior forward SamGossett is expected to missthe entire season after sur-gery to repair torn knee lig-aments from an injury suf-fered during football sea-son. That leaves seniors JonBoss and John Galik, both ofwhom saw limited varsitytime off the bench last sea-son, as the Indians’ mostexperienced players.

“We lost five seniors andwith Sam being out, that’stough,” said Du Quoincoach Gabe Sveda. “We’vegot to step up and faceadversity and get bettereach day.”

Du Quoin has anotherlarge senior class anchoredby 6-5 center BrandonWilliams. Junior BrendenFred, the heir to Gossett onthe football field, is expect-ed to play a lot of minutes

and defensive prowessappears to be what theIndians are striving for in2011-12.

Coach: Gabe SvedaSeniors: Brandon Williams, 6-5, c; John Galik,

6-2, g; Cayle Diggins, 6-2, g; Jon Boss, 6-3, f; DillonBeltz, 6-1, f; Sam Gossett, 6-3, f.

NashvilleLike several teams in the

conference, Nashville isrebuilding after the loss of alarge senior class.

The Hornets lost nineplayers to graduation after a25-5 season and will look toScott Brown for leadershipin 2011-12. Brown, a 6-1junior guard, appeared in 28games last season, averag-ing 13.8 points per game offthe bench for Nashville.

“Obviously, we’ve got alot of question marks,” saidNashville coach BradWeathers.

“We’re looking at a lot ofdifferent combinationswith nine or 10 kids fightingfor playing time.”

At 6-5, junior Devin Holleis the team’s lone playertaller than 6-1 and theteam’s athleticism looks tohave taken a small step backfrom the level it was in2010-11. Still, Nashville is aprogram with a lot of tradi-tion and could adapt quick-ly to its new challenges.

“We’re not going to be asquick or as athletic as wewere a year ago,” Weatherssaid. “We’re going to haveto play awfully, awfullyhard to compensate forsize.”

Coach: Brad WeathersSeniors: Justin Grathwohl, 6-0, f; Jessie

PinckneyvilleThere are strong rumors

coming out of DusterThomas Gymnasium thatthis season’s PinckneyvillePanthers could be the teamto beat in the conference.

Pinckneyville boasts sev-en seniors and four return-ing starters in Bryant Shute,Hunter Queen, Payton Nip-pe and C.J. Opp.

Six of th-ose seven havevarsity exp-erience, but thePanthers lack the post play-er they have had in yearspast.

“One of the big things ishaving two returningguards,” said Pinckneyvillecoach Bob Waggoner. “Weshould be able to pressurethe ball more and do morethings in transition than wehave in the last couple ofyears.

“I expect those four toreally add a level of securityas far as being an extensionof the coach on the floor.”

Coach: Bob WaggonerSeniors: C.J. OPP, 6-3, c; BRYANT SHUTE, 5-9, g;

HUNTER QUEEN, 5-10, g; PAYTON NIPPE, 6-3, f;Keegan Kellerman, 6-2, c; Justin Bumman, 6-0, f;Devan Downard, 6-5, f.

Juniors: Chris Priebe, 6-4, f; Dylan Hardin, 6-0,g.

SpartaSparta coach Rich

Williams is banking on tworeturning starters and a lit-tle bit of better luck in 2011-12.

Second team all-confer-ence forward/center AaronRushing and guard AustinPeck will be asked to pro-vide leadership to a teamthat lost several close gamesin finishing 11-19 and 3-7 inthe conference a year ago.

“We’ve got some athletickids and we’re really youngat the guard position,”Williams said. “We are longand do have some quick-ness.”

At 6-7, Rushing is by farthe team’s tallest player, with 6-3 forward SeanLukes and 6-2 forwardTyler Morrison providingsize inside. The Bulldogshaven’t won a regional titlesince 1991 and haven’t wona conference title since the1982-83 season.

“We lost several closeballgames last year and ifwe had won those, wewould be .500,” Williamssaid.

Anna-JonesboroJessie Stone is going to

have to set the tone forAnna-Jonesboro in 2011-12.

Stone, a 6-foot seniorcenter, is entering herfourth year as a starter forthe Lady Wildcats, one ofonly two players withstarter’s experience backfrom last season’s 13-14squad. The other returner,5-9 forward Valerie Pender,is the other senior on Anna-Jonesboro’s roster.

“Right now, I’ve beenvery impressed with theirwork ethic,” said second-year Anna-Jonesboro coachBryan Clark. “We’re a littleinexperienced on ourbench, but I’m very, verypleased with what I’veseen.”

Sophomore guard/for-ward Erica Friebel and jun-ior guard/forward KatieGrant figure to be heavily inthe mix for playing time andthe team has a combined 17players out for basketball inthe four classes.

“We’ve got three goodguards out of the freshmenclass that may see somevarsity time,” Clark said.“We’re a little young, butthat’s just been the case atAnna the last couple ofyears.”

CartervilleThe Lady Lions find

themselves in a unique sit-uation with no full-timereturning starters, but fourplayers who started at onetime or another last season.

Nina Skinner (5-6 guard),Sidney Brothers (5-7 for-ward), Lauren Sherry (5-7guard) and Andrea Kesler(5-7 guard) highlight agroup of 12 returning varsi-ty players. With 24 playersavailable program-wide,depth is a strong point forCarterville.

“It is a challenge in itselfto keep all 24 busy,” saidCarterville coach ToddRogers. “I’m very pleasedwith the kids that havecome out and it will beinteresting to make thedecisions on who can helpus at the varsity level.”

With the graduation ofMollie Thomas, Carter-ville’s offense will likelycome by committee ratherthan from specific players.

“I think it’s going to comefrom a lot of differentplaces,” Rogers said. “I’ll besurprised if it’s one personthat stands out above theothers.”

The Lady Indians havetwo returning starters insenior Jessica Hirsch (5-6guard) and junior RebekahMaddox (6-1 forward), butwelcome the return of jun-ior Kelsey Robinson (5-7forward) and the addition ofAlexis Kohrs (5-9 guard/forward) from Sparta.

“Alexis started at the var-sity level last year andbrings a lot of competitive-ness to our practices,” Filesaid. “Kelsey will be a phys-ical presence for us on theboards after not playing forthe last couple of years.”

Benton The Rangers return nearly

everyone from last year’sregional championshipteam and look to contendfor a conference crown thisseason.

The team has four posi-tions with returningstarters in the mix, and onlyCaleb Suver has to bereplaced.

Cody Smith, in his fourthyear as the starting pointguard, will lead the waywith Trey Garrett, TylerLeffler and Jared Johnstonback at the other guardspots.

“Any time you bring apoint guard back for hisfourth year that is a goodplace to start,” said Bentoncoach Ron Winemiller.“Cody has continued togrow and take leadership ofthe team. He is a student ofthe game and understandsthe nuance of being a greatpoint guard.”

Benton relied on Suver to

score quite a bit during the2010-11 campaign, butWinemiller expects a bal-anced attack this season.Leffler and Garrett are twoof the best athletes theschool has and are versatileon the basketball court.Mason Childers will berelied upon to do damage inthe paint.

HarrisburgThis could be a great year

for the Bulldogs, who arethe definite favorite to rep-resent the deep south at thesuper-sectional this sea-son.

Harrisburg has a tremen-dous core of players backthis season, and it all startswith 6-foot-2 guard/for-ward Capel Henshaw, whois one of the best players inSouthern Illinois.Henshaw’s very capablesidekick is TylerSmithpeters, who can shootthe lights out and take theball to the hole.

“I think both of themhave gotten better and havespent a lot of time in thegym,” said Harrisburgcoach Randy Smithpeters.“Both are more mature, andtheir roles won’t changemuch. They will have totake over the senior leader-ship we lost from last yeareven though they are onlyjuniors.”

Ryne Roper returns atguard as well, and he’s adeadly 3-point shooter, but

look for Eli Taborn-Scott, a6-foot-3 forward, to stepout on the floor and knockdown jump shots as well.

The team’s top four play-ers aren’t even seniors, sothe Bulldogs could do someserious damage.

HerrinBobby Mannie had a

breakout year as a junior, and he’ll lead the Tigers thisseason along with DeMarloHarris.

That’s a darn good 1-2punch for a Herrin teamthat will move to Class 3Athis season.

“I expect great things outof Bobby Mannie,” saidHerrin coach Irv Lukens.“He has worked very hard, and he’s ready to go, andhe’ll be a force for our team.He is an outstanding play-er.”

Harris didn’t have as goodof a junior season asexpected, and Lukens pre-dicts the 6-foot-4 postplayer will bounce back andwreak havoc in the paint.

“I thought DeMarlo did-n’t have a normal seasonlast year, and I think he’ll behungry this year,” Lukenssaid. “He didn’t have as

much help last year and hadto adjust to that. He needsto be more aggressive thisseason and help us out rightaway.”

Massac CountyThe Patriots will feature a

bit of a different look frompast years during the 2011-12 season.

This year’s group isn’t theexplosive group from thepast, but the squad has areal good post presence togo along with its best play-er, Malcolm Amos at guard.

“I think Amos can reallyscore and he reboundsgreat, but I think we have alot of balance,” said MassacCounty coach Joe Hosman.“We have a very goodshooting team which wehaven’t had in many years. We also have a post up gamewe haven’t used in a fewyears.”

Ethan Schulte, a 6-foot-6 center, and Griffin Bazor,a 6-5 forward, are the bestinside duo in the OhioDivision. Hosman isexpecting quite a bit ofrebounding and stick backsfrom those two.

MurphysboroThe Red Devils enjoyed a

fantastic run last year, which included a 35-gamewinning streak and thestate runner-up trophy inClass 2A.

Five of the six key playersare gone, but Pierre Housereturns and needs to carrythe load for the squad.

“It’s a pretty huge ques-tion mark as to what type ofteam we’ll be,” saidMurphysboro coach DarylMurphy. But I know thatPierre House is going to begreat for us. He has gotten alot better. It will depend onhow hard the other kids arewilling to work to win thoseclose games.”

Murphysboro will be ableto shoot the ball well fromoutside, and Murphy likesthe way this group executesthe offense. But someone isgoing to have to step up andhelp out House with thescoring load.

“This group had one ofour better junior varsityrecords in a long time,”Murphy said.

West FrankfortIt will like be another

rebuilding year for second-year head coach DanDeWerff. The Redbirdshave fallen on hard times inrecent years and just hopeto be competitive in theOhio Division this season.

That may be tough con-sidering just how good the

league is, but DeWerff isgoing to give it his best shotafter winning just onegame last season.

“I think we’ve got somegood work ethic guys com-ing back, and they knowthe expectations I have ofthem,” DeWerff said. “Wefelt each other out lastyear. Besides Nic Koro-lenko, we don’t really haveanyone that contributedmuch offensively last year.”

Korolenko, a 6-foot-2shooting guard, will beasked to carry a bigger loadthis season.

Benton The Rangerettes are

expected to be one of thebetter teams in the SIRROhio Division, and theyreturn a lot of experience.

Morgan Corn is one of thearea’s best post players, andEvelyn Mendez can reallyscore from the guard spot. The squad will also have adeep bench.

“We’ve got experience, talent and hopefully cohe-siveness as a unit,” saidBenton coach Seth Tate. “Ifyou put those three thingstogether you are bound tohave success.”

Sara Miller returns for herfourth season of varsitybasketball at guard. MakalaCarney gives the team asolid post presence as well.

But this year will likelycome down to how far Cornand Mendez can carry team. Both players have startedsince they were freshmen.

“I think they have bothbecome household namesin Southern Illinois,” Tatesaid. “Morgan understandsthat she’ll see double teamsand people trying to bephysical with her. Shewould rather get 10 assiststhan 20 points. It’s safe tosay as those two go that’show we’ll go this year.”

HarrisburgJake Stewart enters his

first season as the varsityhead coach after leadingteams at the junior highlevel.

This will be a rebuildingprocess once again becausethe team has no seniors andjust one junior, Shelby Boer.

“We have a real youngteam and a small team, butwe’ll be kind of quick too,”Stewart said. “Being soyoung could hurt us, espe-cially early in the season. Itwill be tough right now butmight pay off in the future.”

Ashley Ferrell, a 5-2sophomore guard, is theteam’s only returningstarter, and Stewart will becounting on her for quite abit of production.

“I’m expecting Ashley tohandle the ball all the timeand expecting her to score alot,” Stewart said. “She willhave to be the leader of ourteam and that’s a lot to puton a sophomore.”

Boer, a 5-9 forward, isexpected to carry the load inthe paint.

“She will always have toguard the other team’sbiggest player,” Stewartsaid.

Herrin The Tigers return of the

best inside-outside duos inthe area this season. AbbyHorn, 6-foot forward, andTori Johnson, a 5-7 guard, will lead the team.

Those two players willhelp Herrin stay competi-tive with everybody.

“Abby knows she has tostep up and play moreaggressively this year,” saidHerrin coach Bill Green. “Ithink she will meet thechallenge. We might evenplay her on the wing somethis year.”

Johnson really came onstrong toward the end of thelast season and carried theteam at times. Whenevershe learns to handle the ballbetter under pressure shewill become a force for theTigers.

“She is a gamer and prob-ably hates losing more thananyone,” Green said ofJohnson. “I expect a lot ofbig things out of her. Kristina Henley, a 5-10forward, returns as one ofthe best scorers in the areaand has started since shewas a freshman.

“I expect her to have a bigyear, and she has more helpthan she’s ever had,” saidMassac County coach KeithShelton. “If people want totake her out of the gamethen we have other guardswho can take over.”

Becca Reames andChesley Burnham return atthe guard spots, and bothplayers were all-conferenceselections last season alongwith Henley.

“I think we have two kidsat every position that cancontribute,” Shelton said.“We are also very quick, andI’ll take quickness over justabout anything. I told thekids I was going to shut upand let them play for themost part.”

Massac County also has acouple of freshmen thatcould make an impact onthe team. Emily Hoard, a 5-9 point guard, is the quick-est player on the team, according to Shelton. JessieDouglas, a 5-10 forward, will also see action.

Rosie Hines, ChelsiGillespie, Jasmine Gainesand Christina Smith willlead the team in the back-court.

“Our outside shooters arepretty good,” saidMurphysboro coach StaciHickam. “We will be muchmore of an up tempo teamthat runs the floor than wehave in the past couple ofyears.”

Katy Flanigan and ToriConover are also expectedto be key contributors.

“Jasmine Gaines will beour floor general and aslasher,” Hickam said.“Smith and Conover canplay both inside and outsidefor us. We feel like we have alot of balance.”

However, when he foundout his best player andleading scorer, JasmineChromchak, wasn’t goingto play this year, he knewthose would be big shoes tofill.

“We can’t replace thepeople we don’t have, sowe’ll have to do it by com-mittee,” Hampleman said.“It’s going to be interestingand a mixed bag for us.”

The squad does haveKaitlyn Glodich and NicoleFrey returning to the start-ing lineup. Glodich is a solidguard, and Frey helps shoreup the post presence for theteam.

GorevilleGoreville has most of the

pieces of the puzzle coming

back from its super section-al team that finished 27-3last year.

“Coming off super sec-tional last year, we havetalked about lofty expecta-tions,” Goreville coach MikeHelton said. “But right nowwe’re trying to focus onfinding some rhythm.

In addition to playersfrom last year’s squad, sen-iors Tiffani Shadowens andRhiannon Pyle are comingback to the program afternot playing last year.

The challenge forGoreville will be finding theright mix of players.

“Last year, we werealmost like a hockey line,”Helton said. “We played inshifts. We have that kind ofdepth. So early on it’s goingto be a lot about just findingthe right combination. When we get that sortedout, we can be competi-tive.”

Trico does have a fresh-man coming in who poten-tially could contribute.Hayleigh Heins stands 6-1and could be a force inside, but Vogt doesn’t want toplace too many expecta-tions on a freshman.

Vogt expects his team todo well defensively, but theoffense could be more of aproblem.

The Illinois High School Association’snew classification and multiplier waiverpolicies went into effect for the 2011-12school year. And, those changes will havea pronounced affect on two programs.

The organization thought the imbal-anced number of schools in each classcalled for a change. The IHSA also waivedthe multiplier for non-boundary schoolsthat haven’t had success in the past.

Trico would have been a heavy favoriteto advance to the boys state tournamentin Class 1A, but the Pioneers have beenbumped up to 2A.

The cutoff for Class 1A is now 275 stu-dents. Trico comes in at 283 for thisschool year, which makes it one of thesmallest Class 2A schools in the state.

“We haven’t looked it that way as farwas what would’ve happened in 1A, andour approach is still the same,” said Tricocoach Shane Hawkins. “We’ll prepare allseason and hopefully we’ll be playing ourbest basketball in February. It doesn’treally matter who is on the other side ofthe court.”

Hawkins is obviously being diplomaticand trying not to complain. But having tobeat the likes of Harrisburg and BreeseCentral in a deep 2A postseason run isquite a bit different than trying to knockoff Woodlawn or Crab Orchard in 1A.

“I never envisioned the smallest classbeing down to 275 students,” Hawkinssaid. “I’ve been watching high school ath-letics all my life and I couldn’t believe it. Inever saw this coming.”

The Herrin Tigers are in the same boat. The team will move up from Class 2A to3A this season in basketball. Irv Lukens, who coaches the Herrin boys, dealt withthe issue as Herrin’s volleyball coach.

Lukens’ volleyball team won its Class3A regional, and his basketball squadfaces the same challenge.

“We were very surprised that this hap-pened, and I didn’t even know it was in

the works,” Lukens said. “If this is going tocontinue we’ll have to modify our sched-ule a little bit.”

Herrin, which has an enrollment of694, now could face schools with up to1,580 in the postseason. The Tigers, whoplay in the SIRR Ohio, will basically entera South Seven Conference tournament inthe regional with the likes of Carbondale,Marion and Mount Vernon.

“I don’t plan on going to the Bellevillearea or anything like that for regular sea-son games, but who knows,” Lukens said.“We already play Marion and MountVernon in the Pyramid Tournament, andwe may have to try and add Carbondale toour regular season schedule in the future.”

Lukens does think his basketball teamcan compete at the 3A level, but hebelieves it could be really difficult.

“It will be exciting for sure, and we’lljust have to try to beat the team they putin front of us,” Lukens said. “It mightbecome hard to win year in and year out. When you have to play schools withpotentially 1,000 more students yourchances go down.”

However, both Herrin and especiallyTrico are close to dropping back down aclass. So things could turn out differentlyfrom year to year depending on the size ofeach school’s incoming freshmen class.

“There are all the 3A private schoolsthat have not had success and now theydon’t have to use the multiplier,” Hawkinssaid. “That will throw a wrinkle in it everyyear based on how they do. You get a cou-ple 3A or even 2A private schools that winand they can adjust it every year.”
