2011-12 Southern Utah Golf

A nice mix of youth and experience would be a good way

to analyze both the men’s and the women’s golf teams at

Southern Utah University in 2011-12.

And that analysis has head coach Richard Church cau-

tiously optimistic about the season.

The men’s team returns a solid core of upperclassmen and

an experienced sophomore class, and adds two talented

freshmen who have had a good deal of success in the high

school and junior golf ranks. The women’s team also has a

good core of experienced returning players, a good soph-

omore class, and a good group of incoming freshmen.

“We come into the season with a good group of leaders

returning on both the men’s and women’s teams,” Church

says. “Most of our returners are coming off good sum-

mers. One the men’s side we had five players do well at

the Utah Amateur, with four making it to medal play and

we had some success on the women’s side as well.

“We’ve got a good core of returning players on both

teams, and we’ve got two good freshman classes as well,”

he adds.

The men’s team has three seniors: Jeff Evans, Brad Millard

and Jordan Orth; as well as sophomores Nic Booth, Jake

Holt and Greg Kerber returning from last year’s squad.

All three sophomores played in at least eight of the team’s

12 events last season, so it is an experienced bunch. Tyler

Hunt, a redshirt freshman returning from an LDS church

mission, will also rejoin the team this season.

Just one senior will compete on the women’s side in 2011-

12, Kacy Buckner, as the other senior, Sadie Palmer, is

using a redshirt year this season. Buckner is joined by jun-

iors Jamie Coking and Brittany Edwards, as well as soph-

omores Kaohi Loo and Rose Pelletier on the competition

squad. Buckner, Coking and Loo played in every event

last season, while Edwards missed just two.

Entering the mix for the men are freshmen Foster Kenton

III and Sammy Cole; and Monica Jung, Alyssa Ballew and

Shantell Spackman on the women’s squad. All five had a

good deal of success prior to joining the Thunderbirds.

SUU also added another freshman on the women’s team,

Megan Terry, but she is rehabilitating an injury and will

redshirt along with Palmer this season.

On the men’s side Evans returns as one of the most suc-

cessful players in SUU history. A two-time all-Summit

League performer, Evans was named the league’s most

valuable player last year, then he went on to win the Utah

State Amateur in the summer, becoming the first Thun-

derbird, current or former, to win the event. Evans posted

the third-lowest stroke average in school history last sea-

son, 72.6, and had seven top-20 finishes, including five in

the top-10, in 11 stroke-play events.

“Jeff has all the tools plus he has a great work ethic,”

Church notes. “He is looking to improve his golf game

daily. He sets high goals for himself and he has the ability

to achieve them. He has good length, a good short game

and he’s very good around the greens.”

Millard played in all but one tourney last season, and his

75.26 career stroke average ranks eighth all-time at South-

ern Utah. He finished second on the team five times in the

10 tournaments he competed in and has had the team’s

second-lowest stroke average, behind Evans, the past two

years.

“With the improved ability on the team Brad has worked

harder this summer than he has in the past,” Church says.

“He’s been a solid member of the team the past couple of

years and done everything we brought him in to do. I

hope to see good leadership from him in his senior sea-

son.”

Orth wound up fourth on the team in stroke average last

year after competing in 10 of the 12 events. He joined the

team as a sophomore in 2009 after transferring from Dixie

State, and he competed in all of the team’s events in the

spring of 2010.

“Jordan has continued to work hard on his game ever

since he got here,” Church says. “He is striving to im-

prove and he continues to improve. He has good leader-

ship skills and has a lot of talent. We look for him to con-

tinue to be a solid contributor to the team.”

Last year’s team had no seniors and no sophomores,

meaning this year’s sophomore class got a lot of experi-

ence last season, a factor that bodes well for the future.

“Nic, Jake and Greg bring a higher competitive level into

their sophomore seasons than we’ve historically had from

our sophomores,” Church points out.

Booth wound up with the team’s third-lowest stroke aver-

age last year, and after a few struggles in the fall he came

on in the spring, with a pair of top-20 finishes and overall

solid play.

“Nic had a strong summer and he has worked hard to

continue to improve,” Church notes. “His work ethic has

improved, his course management has improved and we

expect him to give Jeff a run for his money this year. He’s

very athletic, hits it a long way and he’s a good wedge

player.”

Holt was also a major contributor during the 2010-11 sea-

son. He missed the team’s season-opener at Air Force, but

played in every event the rest of the way.

“Jake practices harder than anyone else on the team,”

Church says. “He’s a good putter and a good driver of the

ball. He has some definite skills but he also has some

areas he needs to work on; he knows that and he’s work-

ing to improve those areas.”

Kerber walked on in the fall of 2010 but earned a spot on

the team and by spring he was a regular, appearing in all

but one event. He was fifth on the squad in stroke average

last year.

“Greg is a gritty competitor who has fought his way into a

contributing role on the team,” Church says. “When his

back is against the wall he performs at his best. If I had to

have one guy to make a putt to save my life it would be

him.”

As for the freshmen, Kenton was a four-time all-stater

who won a pair of Nevada high school championships

during his career at Mineral County HS, while Cole was a

CIF Southern Division champion and a three-time all-

league selection at Aliso Niguel HS as well as the first al-

ternate to the U.S. Amateur this past summer.

“Foster brings a good work ethic and a light-hearted per-

sonality to the team, he’s fun to be around and he’s a

good player,” Church notes. “Sammy brings a strong jun-

ior resume’, he was the first alternate to the U.S. Amateur

and he’s had numerous top-10 finishes during his junior

career.”

On the women’s side, with Palmer – who has led the team

the past two seasons, including posting the lowest stroke

average in the four-year history of the women’s program

last year – sitting, there is an opportunity for a handful of

players to rise to the top and lead the team.

As the lone competing senior, Buckner is the logical

choice. She has played in every event for the team all

three years she has been at SUU and has had its second-

lowest stroke average the past two years. She led the team

at three events and was second on the squad three more

times last year, with three top-10 finishes and the team’s

lowest individual round, a 70 at the Jackrabbit Invita-

tional, which is also the second-lowest round in SUU golf

history.

“Kacy’s been a steady player for us for three years and

we’re hoping she has a strong senior season.” Church

says. “As our only senior we’re expecting more leadership

out of her this year, but she’s a talented player. She’s a

good putter, she has good focus and she sees the course

very well.”

Coking has played in every event the last two years. A

player who didn’t really get serious about golf until she

was in high school, she finished last season with the

fourth-best stroke average on the team and she has con-

tinued to improve as she has gained experience.

“Jamie is probably our best athlete but she’s relatively in-

experienced as far as golf goes, she was a softball player

before she turned her focus to golf,” Church notes. “She

had a strong summer and she’s made great strides as a

golfer.”

Edwards has been in and out of the lineup the past two

seasons, but she has contributed when given the opportu-

nity. Last year she played in nine of the team’s 11 events

and had a pair of top-25 finishes.

“Brittany hits it a long way, with good length off the tee,”

the coach says. “She has continued to work at her game

and we’re looking forward to seeing that improvement

continue.”

Loo had one of the best freshman seasons in the short his-

tory of SUU women’s golf last year, She finished third on

the team in stroke average after playing in every event,

and she carded a pair of top-10 finishes, including a tie for

third place in her first collegiate event.

“Kaohi worked very hard this summer to improve her

distance,” Church notes. “She’s already a great putter and

if she can get the rest of her game up to that level she has

some real potential. She played a good summer schedule

and we’re looking forward to her season.”

Pelletier is another relative newcomer to the game, but

she has taken advantage of her opportunities to improve

and is poised to become another vital piece of the squad.

Although she competed in just three events last season,

Church says she is the most improved player on the team

this year.

“Rose had the most productive and hardest-working

summer of the whole team, and she showed the most im-

provement,” Church pointed out. “If she continues to im-

prove on her putting we expect her to be in the lineup.”

Jung “has the strongest junior resume of any golfer we’ve

ever brought to Southern Utah, male or female,” Church

says. A native of South Korea who spent much of her life

in Australia, Jung saw an outstanding junior career inter-

rupted when she was in a serious automobile accident

during high school. She has worked hard to come back,

however, and has as much potential as anyone Church

has coached.

“Monica suffered a potentially career-ending injury in

high school but was able to fight her way back,” Church

notes. “At a young age she was on the state team of the

New South Wales Golf Association, but after her accident

it would have been easy to quit, but she just worked

harder. She works very hard, she has a great attitude, and

she’s a great teammate.”

career. She was a three-time all-state performer at

Las Vegas’ Arbor View HS who also lettered in soft-

ball and basketball.

“Alyssa was a strong junior player, she played in an

average of 25 tournaments a year in high school,”

Church notes. “She’s athletic and very talented, she

has a lot of golf skill.”

Spackman was a four-year all-region and a three-

time all-state honoree at Utah’s Sky View HS. She

finished third in the state as a senior, and like

Ballew, also lettered in basketball.

“Shantell is very athletic and a great competitor,”

Church says. “She’s fairly new to the game, but

she’s a hard worker and we think she has a lot of

potential.”

Terry is another two-time all-state selection who

lettered in both golf and basketball. She helped her

team to a state championship in 2010 and was re-

gion medalist as a junior.

“Megan was a good junior player but she’s over-

coming an injury she suffered in high school,”

Church pointed out. “Down the road we expect

her to become a contributor when she gets

through her rehabilitation.”

The 2011-12 Coaches


Richard Church is in his 12th season as head golf coach at Southern Utah University and his 16th asa member of the SUU golf staff. Church served as the Thunderbirds’ assistant coach for four seasonsprior to taking over from former Coach John Evans in the fall of 2000.

During his tenure as head or assistant coach at SUU, Church has coached seven Academic all-Amer-icans, one conference champion, four conference runners-up, and the University's only two NCAApost-season competitors in golf. He has also seen the team finish second in the league five timessince SUU golf began competing in the Summit League in 1997-98, including in 2005, 2006 and2011.

A 1989 graduate of the University of Utah, Church owns and operates the Blue Pine Motel in nearbyPanguitch, Utah. He has overseen the establishment of the Southern Utah University Golf Endow-ment Fund and has been active in numerous political campaigns, both in Utah and in WashingtonD.C.

Church and his wife, Cheryl, are the parents of four children, Justin, Kyle, Josh and Breanne.

Casey McClellan is in his third season as assistant golf coach at Southern Utah.

A 1998 graduate of Southern Utah University, Coach McClellan will help with travel, tournamentcoaching, and the daily operations of both the men's and women's golf programs, with primary em-phasis on the women’s team. McClellan also serves as the Executive Director of the Utah SummerGames.

Prior to taking the helm at the USG, McClellan served as head women's softball coach at Dixie StateCollege where he led his team to the first national tournament appearance in school history as well asits first Region 18 championship. His squad was also named NJCAA academic all-American Team ofthe Year after compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.67. McClellan has also served as an assistantwomen's basketball coach at DSC and SUU.

Coach McClellan is married to the former Cori Kay Benson. They have one child, Chandler.

John Evans returned to Southern Utah as an assistant coach last season after a 10-year hiatus fromthe program.

A 1967 graduate of Brigham Young University, Evans was SUU’s head golf coach for eight years be-fore handing the reins to Richard Church in 1999. As SUU’s head coach, Evans guided the team tosecond-place finishes in the Mid-Continent Conference in 1997 and 1998 and coached one Mid-Conmedalist. He also coached many all-conference performers and oversaw the development of the pro-gram as it moved from NAIA competition to the NCAA Division I level.

Coach Evans, who is the PGA professional at Cedar Ridge Golf Course, also had a successful careeras a coach at the high school level. He has also experienced a good deal of success as a player,competing in the PGA Championship in addition to numerous other tournaments.

Coach Evans and his wife Pam, are the parents of six children, Lisa, Leslie, Mike, Robb, Katy andJeff. All three of his sons have played golf at Southern Utah.

At SUU, 2010-11: Led or co-led the Thunderbirds in every tournament … led the team in stroke aver-

age at 72.6, the third best average in SUU history … had eight top-20 and seven top-10 finishes in 11

tournaments, including fourth at CS Northridge’s Bill Cullum Invitational, fifth at The Summit League

Championships, seventh at South Dakota State’s Jackrabbit Invitational and UC Santa Barbara’s

OGIO Invitational, 10th at Colorado’s Mark Simpson Invitational and 19th at Denver’s Desert

Shootout … best round was a 67 at Northridge, as was his best finish (fourth) … the 67 was tied as

the team’s low round of the season, it also tied the seventh-best round in school history and was one-

off his personal low.

At SUU, 2009-10: Competed at all 11 tournaments and carried the team's lowest stroke average at

74.0 ... best round was 66, at Wyoming's Cowboy Classic, and his best finish was second at SUU's

Pat Hicks Invitational ... had five top-10 finishes and in the spring he finished out of the top-30 just

once in six tourneys ... earned first-team all-Summit League honors after finishing fourth at the league

championship.

At SUU, 2008-09: Played in all but one tournament … carried team’s fourth-best stroke average at

76.4 … best round was 70, which he shot at SUU’s Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational and at Den-

ver’s Desert Shootout … best finish was 10th at the Thunderbird Invitational.

At Cedar High School: Earned four letters playing for his dad, John, at Cedar High School …claimed

region medalist honors his senior season … also lettered in basketball, earned region MVP recogni-

tion.

Personal: Won the Utah State Amateur championship this past summer, becoming the first Thunder-

bird to win the tournament … competed at the 2010 US Pub Links after earning a spot in the tourney

as Utah's No. 2 qualifier ... qualified for and competed at the 2009 U.S. Amateur after finishing first at

At SUU, 2009-10: Competed for the Thunderbirds in spring of 2010 after joining the team at semesterbreak. Played in all six spring tournaments, best finish was 36th at the Summit League champi-onships, best round was 74 at South Dakota State’s Jackrabbit Invitational. Finished the season witha 79.0 stroke average.

Prior To SUU: Competed one season at Dixie State College.

Personal: Graduate of Mt. Baker High School in Cranbrook, B.C. where he was a four-year letter-win-ner for Coach Rob Taylor and his dad, Darrell Orth. Was a two-time Provincial Champion, he set thetournament record at 5-under par 139 as a sophomore. Competed in the 2006 International JuniorMaster’s tourney, advancing to the round of 16. Also lettered in volleyball. Was Mt. Baker’s Male Ath-lete of the Year in 2006, when he was also named the school’s most dedicated male athlete. Parentsare Tammy and Darrell. Is majoring in biology with an emphasis on pre-dentistry.

Southern Utah University Athletics

Mission Statement Southern Utah University’s Athletic Department is dedicated to providing quality programs that assist in complimenting and ful-

filling the University’s educational objectives and mission. The athletic program adheres to the policies and procedures of the NCAA and the rules of any conference, league or associa-tion of which it is a member. The Athletic Department is committed to excellence in academics as well as athletics and focuses on fielding competitive teamsat the Division I level. Participation in intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the student’s overall educational experience. The University strives to reach the highest possible graduation rate for all of its student-athletes while focusing on their social,cultural and intellectual development. The Athletic Department recognizes the importance of equity in all of its programs and promotes diversity in both student-ath-letes and staff. Student-athletes, coaches and all others associated with intercollegiate athletics are expected to embrace the princi-ples of sportsmanship and ethical conduct.

Dr. Michael T. Benson, SUU President


Michael T. Benson entering his fifth year as president of Southern Utah University He was appointed the 15thpresident of SUU on November 10, 2006, by the Utah State Board of Regents.

Dr. Benson came to SUU from Snow College where he served as president for five years. Prior to his tenure inEphraim, Dr. Benson was special assistant to the president and secretary to the University of Utah, a cabinet-levelposition on that campus. During his presidency at Snow, athletic teams ex-celled, winning several conference championships and finishing near thetop of national rankings. He was instrumental in establishing America’spremier junior college football bowl game, the Zions Bank Top of the Moun-tains Bowl, played each December in Salt Lake City. Dr. Benson currentlyserves as Chair of the Presidents’ Council for the Summit League.

President Benson is the father of four children, Emma, Samuel, Truman Taft, and Tatum Anne. He andhis wife Debi, along with the kids, are regularly seen around campus and at all types of sporting events. An accomplished athlete, Dr. Benson was captain of the East High School basketball team and one offour sophomores on the team that won the 1981 Utah State championship. He turned down track scholar-ships as a senior at East to enroll at Brigham Young University on a leadership scholarship, eventually earn-ing a bachelor’s degree in political science, English, and history while playing on the junior varsity basketballteam. He has also competed in the worlds oldest rivalry, serving as a player/coach in leading Oxford Univer-sity over Cambridge in the 1994 Varsity Basketball Match. President Benson has completed several marathons with his best time (2:41) winning his age divisionat the St. George Marathon. In 1984, Michael was one of only 19 teenagers to compete in the BostonMarathon, with his finishing time of 2:52 placing him in the top 15% of all registered runners. While Presidentof Snow College, he ran the St. George Marathon again, this time raising over $50,000 for the athletic de-partment. He currently maintains a seven handicap in his favorite sport, golf. Dr. Benson holds a doctorate in modern Middle Eastern History from Oxford University. His critically-ac-claimed book, Harry S. Truman and the Founding of Israel has led to many lecturing and consulting opportu-nities. Michael regularly leads tour groups to the Middle East where he is eager to share his love for andknowledge of the region. This past summer he completed coursework and was awarded a master’s degreein non-profit administration at the Mendoza School of Business at the University of Notre Dame. The Bensons are delighted to be at Southern Utah University and look forward to supporting Thunder-bird student-athletes for many years to come.

I thankyou for your continued commitment to SUU and its many out-standing athletic programs which now number 17 – the secondhighest number of Division I sports programs offered in the en-tire State of Utah. For all those who enjoy a football Saturday on a beautifulfall day in the shadow of Cedar Mountain, the benefits of Divi-sion I athletics in our community are innumerable. Our student athletes also represent a large percentage ofthe geographic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and religious diversity oncampus which, I believe, enhances and enriches the academicand social experience of ALL our students. Ken Beazer was named Southern Utah’s

Athletic Director on Dec. 21, 2005 and took the

reins of the program Jan. 2, 2006.

Beazer came to Southern Utah from Utah

State University, where he had served as direc-

tor of athletic development for the past four-plus years. While at USU,

Beazer developed and initiated the largest capital campaign in the his-

tory of the school’s athletic department, including fund-raising for a

planned $25 million renovation of Romney Stadium.

Prior to his time at Utah State, Beazer spent nine years at Snow Col-

lege, the first three as defensive coordinator on the football coaching

staff and the final six – from 1995 to 2001 – as the school’s director of

athletics. As a coach his teams ranked among the NJCAA’s top five de-

fenses two of his three seasons, while as AD at Snow he implemented

the college’s first Athletic Foundation Board as well as an annual giving

program. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant football

coach at Washington State University.

Beazer is a 1989 graduate of Weber State University with a degree in

broadcast communication. He also holds a master of arts degree in com-

munication from Washington State, as well as an associate of arts in the

same field from Snow College.

Beazer and his wife, Cidnee, are the parents of four children: Rhett,

Adrienne, Jadon and Harrison.

farm in western Cedar Val-

ley and a 3,700-acre ranch

in Cedar Canyon.

SUU is host to the Tony Award-

winning Utah Shakespearean

Festival.

Because of their proximity and grandeur, Zion

National Park and Cedar Breaks National

Monument are claimed by SUU’ students as

part of their campus. Geology and life science

field trips take advantage of these national

treasures, in addition to Bryce Canyon, Grand

Canyon, Capitol Reef and Great Basin Na-

tional Parks, which are also close by.

The University’s skiing classroom is at

the 11,300-foot Brian Head Ski Resort, less

than an hour away, while the recreational op-

portunities offered by Lake Powell are less than

two hours away.

SUU has a history unique in the annals of American

higher education. In 1897, the entire population of Cedar

City, then a small pioneer town, engaged in the building of

Old Main, the first building of the University. Beginning the

project in mid-winter because of a harsh deadline imposed

by the legislature, the men and women of the community

donated materials, money and labor to complete the build-

ing on time.

Today the university campus has grown to comprise

133 acres, landscaped with fountains, tall spruce and pine

trees, plazas, statuary, latticed walkways and expansive

lawns, offering the kind of education you’d expect to re-

ceive at a small, private school at the

low price of a public institution.

Cedar City and Iron County Located in the heart of southern Utah’s Color Country, Cedar

City has received numerous “Best Places To Live In The USA”

awards over the years. A vital, growing mountain community with

four distinct seasons, Cedar City boasts 310 clear days a year.

Cedar City has a population of 22,000 while surrounding Iron

County has 35,000 residents.

The home of Southern Utah University, Cedar City is also

home to the American Folk Ballet and the Utah

Shakespearean Festival (both affiliated with the Uni-

versity), as well as the Iron Mission State Park,

Cedar Ridge Golf Course and a variety of recre-

ational facilities including four city parks, two base-

ball/softball complexes and a bicycle/walking path,

all within minutes of the SUU campus.

Within an easy day’s drive are five national parks – Zion,

Bryce, Grand Canyon, Great Basin and Capitol Reef – several state

parks and recreation areas and a host of hunting, fishing and other

outdoor recreational opportunities, including Brian Head Ski Re-

sort, just a 45-minute drive from campus.

Cedar City is also one of the safest places in the country, as

Utah is consistently rated as one of the nation’s safest states and

Iron County is perennially one of the state’s

safest counties.
