Congratulations Carnegie Mellon University Australiaclasses of 2011 and 2012 !

The Year Book is a celebration of the students graduating in a particular year, and chronical of the experiences and events surrounding them. It is always a significant challenge to try to collect and condense the events and experiences of an entire year into one document before everyone vanishes back to their real lives. The task for this year's committe was made even more strenuous, with the committee only forming in the dying embers of 2012 - at a time they were preparing for fi nal exams - and with the previous year's Year Book remaining totally unrealised.

Tim (2011 MSIT graduate) somehow managed to convince the 2012 team to collate a "Bumper Edition" of both 2011 & 2012 years, and thus our work began. Jaksha (2012 MSIT graduand) took the lead of chief whip cracker, and Anna Q (2013 MISM candidate) performed miracles with her extraordinary publication and design wizardary. This tome is the result of much hard work and many differences of opinions - but you hold in your hands our fi nal effort, and whether it meets the high standards of previous publications remains to be seen. We are spent - so that is an end to it. Publish and be dammed!

Like those books of past years, we hope that this Year Book serves as good record of the events and personalities of the last two years, and provides a nostalgic memento for all our comrades. Take it out occasionally and have a smile at your amazing time here in Adelaide, and in doing so, be reminded to keep in touch.

I extend my warmest congratulations to graduates for December 2012 of Carnegie Mellon University Australia’s Heinz College in Adelaide.

Since establishing in South Australia in 2006, we have focused on bringing all the elements of Carnegie Mellon’s inter-disciplinary, problem-solving approach and advanced technology to the study of critical societal and organizational issues. Our Adelaide campus has provided us with a uniquely diverse student cohort and an ability to combine the study of information technology and public policy provides a strong foundation for training future leaders throughout this region, and the world. The graduates you see today have succeeded in a rigorous and valuable program of study and we are honored to count them among our many other graduates around the world.

The students presented here are now Heinz College Alumni. My charge to them is to become--in the words of our founder--“men and women of intelligent action who can change the world”. I thank all family, friends, faculty and administrators who have helped our graduates reach this day, and with you, I congratulate these new alumni and wish them the very best in the years to come.

Ramayya Krishnan Dean of the Heinz College

Every year, Carnegie Mellon University - Australia welcomes new batches of students representing the very best and brightest the world has to offer. After a few weeks on campus, many question whether they will survive our demanding programs and all that comes with earning a degree from Carnegie Mellon University. Many doubt their abilities despite qualifications, experience and outstanding achievements. Yet as the studies progress, a miraculous transformation occurs –not only do the students survive, but they excel as capable, confi dent and competitive individuals. Well-rounded global

leaders ready to face anything and everything that comes their way.

The University would of course like to take credit for the transformation, but this would not only be presumptuous,

but unfounded. Your degree is your accomplishment, your triumph and your choice for the future. At best the College

was the supporting cast of a play in which you were the star. The knowledge you acquired from us will soon be replaced by new

learning and experiences as you excel in your chosen fi elds, with a renewed confi dence to conquer challenges, and an intrinsic, invaluable understanding of your limits and the ability to transcend them.In this closing message to you, the esteemed graduates of Carnegie Mellon University - Australia, it is customary to share with you a thought to guide you in life, and I will leave you with an account of a personal experience which has served me well. Upon graduating from Ohio State with a doctorate in political science and math, I thought I must be pretty darn smart. My father, who actually was pretty darn smart, brought together his friends on my graduation day to celebrate. He called me over in front of the group. I thought I would be showered with praise and perhaps money for a job well done, but all he said when he introduced me was “We’ve invested a lot in this kid” then he turned to me and said “Say something smart”. I was speechless. To this day, after studying my entire life, I still don’t know what I should have said. So I leave you with this thought: Use your newly acquired knowledge, abilities and confi dence to do great things, but never forget where you came from. A large part of being the best is being humble.

The two things I never thought I could do before CMU-A : 1) Not watch TV in almost 1 year. My independent study into the return on investment approach that the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (now the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure) has taken in its move towards enterprise GIS is a synergy of my undergraduate studies, my work experience and my coursework at CMU. I am a happy go lucky type, yet a go getter. It was my fi rst time to get ICED in Australia.

I joined the Vanuatu National Rugby team at one stage but ended up as a water boy. The stress at that Torrens building is sprikitic but worth it at the end.

Only in Australia did I take four exam-laden quantitative subjects and a qualitative one with a 150-page, three-hour, sit-in midterm exam--all in one semester.I am a basketball-everybody is scrambling to get hold of me and score!

Santiago: You can always share a great conversation with Tom. A smart guy with really interesting points of view.

Isaias: He looks a quiet dude from outside, but from inside he is a party animal hahaKasimona: Easy going,... with a healthy appetite for food!

I love traveling, experiencing new things, knowing new people, reading new books and learning anything the world has to offer. I guess my experience at CMU Australia was the best way to do this all at once. Have great memories, met wonderful people, but describing them in a few words won't make justice to what it really meant.

I am a family man. A husband to a lovely wife and father of two wonderful children. One of the toughest decisions I had to make in my life was to leave them behind to study in Adelaide. Fortunately, the people at CMU (students, faculty, and staff) made life so much easier, they became my new family. I came to Adelaide in the summer when temperature reached above 40 degrees celsius, which is pretty high even for someone from a tropical country like me. I loved the heat and spent as much time as I can in the sun. Temperature dropped during the autumn, and reached

its minimum in the winter, which restricted my outdoor activities. Spring time in Adelaide was unpredictable, it can be hot in the day and chilly at night, all in one day. All in all, weather was never harsh, I really enjoyed it.In terms of academics, my CMU

experience was beyond my expectations. I expected a straightforward curriculum focusing on IT, but got a lot more than just that. Education at CMU was very inter-disciplinary, combining knowledge in the fi elds of business and policy, which I fi nd very interesting and relevant to the industry today.Studying at CMU was a rigorous challenge, but the environment of the campus and city of Adelaide have been instrumental for me to pull through. I am forever grateful for having the opportunity to study at CMU and becoming friends with extraordinary people from all over the world.

I love Manila. It will always be home to me. <3 But if I were to choose, the vibrancy of Sydney calls me to return & settle. My year in Australia has been an amazing experience, and even that is an understatement in itself. The Great ocean road gave me the most beautiful things I have seen yet, and I hope to return someday. I could say my CMU life was a good balance between academics & having fun. I have a reputation for being a party girl, but my grades prove that I never neglect putting in good work for my subjects. As I always say, it's all about balance. :)

CMU-A has been a roller coaster ride, right from the very start. Loved every moment of it from the orientation to the grueling assignments and course load to the fun events at the uni and Urbanest. It was an amazing opportunity to meet people from so many different countries, try their food talk about politics, religion, books, movies etc. and give them a little idea about life in India. I also had the most fun organizing the various events as part of the Student Social Committee (Halloween, International Students Night, Graduation Dinners, Welcome BBQ's etc. etc.). In the end "The Tassel was worth the hassle"

Adelaide is a very special city for me. Coming from a very busy place like Mexico City to the quite and charming Adelaide is a challenge. I love the weather and hanging out to the beach in summer. I will defi nitely miss having a good BBQ with my Uni friends.

During this short carrier I have worked in a number of public and private organization on various position. Before I left for Australia I was working as Systems Engineer at a Government organization responsible for managing database for Pakistani citizens. I loved my stay here at Adelaide and CMU.

Some of my most most memorable moments in CMU Australia have been at this small campus. Whether it was spending a sleepless night trying to fi nish a project or bonding with other students from different countries at one of the social events. I will also miss the summer BBQ at the beach.

However, unlike blood-sucking vampires he is more humane Salfi kar: He was the fi rst student I came in contact with in campus and has been a really helpful friend ever since.Hassam: A person of good heart and a really funny personality. Had good fun talking and going on trips with him.My favourite city (off course after Adelaide) is my home town Rawalpindi. I call it the Adelaide of Pakistan as people from all over Pakistan come and stay there for work and living etc. I like all rice dishes and one can fi nd a wide variety of rice dishes in local resturants of Adelaide. My experience at CMU was wounderful and I learnt a lot of things other than academic stuff as well. I can now easily differentiate between Chineese , Korean , Japneese and Vitnameese :P I can never forget the quite , mysterious and elegant campus of CMU Adelaide and its friendly and helpful staff. Every new semester bought new friends , weather and schedule.

Ziggy was born in 1987 in Taipei, Taiwan, which is famous for snacks , food and bubble tea.He is a big fan of NBA and MLB. Favourite city: Adelaide of course; Food: Asian foods; Movies: the Bourne seriesMy 1.5 year with CMU is one of the best period of time in my life. I had the priviledge to study in the best IT course in the world, learn from the world class professors. I will really miss the Social Commitee's activities. Love the go-cart events (did it it twice!). I'll have to do again later sometime.

Spending almost 2 years in Adelaide and studying at CMU was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I have ever done. Not only because of the demanding academic standards, but also for being alone so far away

from home. I must admit that I struggled a lot sometimes, such as when my father suffered a heart attack. However, I had great times as well. Above all, I really enjoyed making some new friends from all over the world, getting to know amazing and unique places, experiencing a new culture, and developing myself both personally and professionally. I believe I have changed for good in a lot of ways and I will never forget what I have lived in Australia. In brief, I would defi nitely recommend this experience to anyone and I hope you have learned as

much as I did. I would take this opportunity to thank my family and friends. Without your support I could never make this possible. Love you all! Lastly, best wishes and congratulations to all CMU graduates!

Usman: A simple person who is there when you need himThere was a time when I went to the Whispering Wall with my friend and we decided to walk all the way there through the Barossa Valley. It was madness since it was almost a 10-15 km walk and there were no buses in those region that day. It was also getting dark and we didnt know how are we gonna return. The last train was supposed to be at 10 and still there was a long walk required. We ran like 5 km just to see the Whispering Wall but luckily found a family in a car who gave us a lift back to the train stop. It was crazy and fun at the same time.

Can't believe I'm actually fi lling this form... My favorite city is wherever I am at the present. For some reason I love Italian food and also those stunner deals I ate every week during my degree. I like horror movies and silly classics like back to the future. I know it doesn't say to write our favorite animal but mine is the whale Keiko. Year 2011 was an awesome year that I'll remember for a long time. I just grew in so many ways and had so much fun doing it. Beyond the growth I'm glad I'll get to keep in touch with awesome people that taught me important lessons for life.

And I love Nsima (Zambian main dish)! Sadly I could not fi nd it in Adelaide so I resorted to Nandos Chicken and Chips! That's not to say I did not like Adelaide. Adelaide is great! I especially liked the highly multi-cultural school environment. I know that when I travel the world, I won't be a stranger anywhere (... well almost anywhere!) because I have come to know and network with people of different nationalities from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I liked Adelaide's weird weather too!

When it comes to gadget my friends sometimes question the choices that I make, but they admire my willingess and patience to experience all that life has to offer. In fact, my experimental nature has helped me learn lot of things. Coming to CMU Adelaide is a refreshing change from the usual past. Fun nights at Backpackoz, walked 30kms/week, drove 4000kms in 5days, enjoyed partying with my all my mates, not a great cook...but did some anyway, spent sleepless nights in project room, loads of memorable potlucks, walked midnight past to Coles and the list goes on.

I like Pakistani delicacies but I cannot eat too spicy food. I also have a sweet tooth. Legends of the Fall is my all-time favourite movie. The workload of CMU didn't allow me to enjoy the beauty and festivities of this marvellous city. I hope ,after graduation, I will start exploring the pulchritude of Adelaide.

My favourite city is Queenstown (New Zealand ) and the favourite is Litti Chokha a Indian dish. The most touching movie i remember watching is a Hindi movie called Sadma. I came to CMU Adelaide with limited expectations. The most memorable moments in Adelaide is the quality time i spent with my daughter Diya and my wife. Being in a job where taking time for family is a luxury, i treasure and miss the time spent with my family in Adelaide. I remember the long drives in Australia to Uluru, Darwin, Melbourne, Sydney and other places. One interesting story is when our car broke

down on our way from Sydney to Melbourne and my little daughter did not want to leave the broken car as she had developed such a great affi nity towards that car as it was almost our second home.

Katrina: Why are you so wonderful?Traveling and getting to know different cultures and traditions is one of my hobbies. For these reason studying at CMU gave me the best multicultural studying experience that could not reached only by traveling.

An extremely refreshing learning experience for a father of two kids (ending in a surprisingly good GPA). Found tough working overnight on assignments as also rushing for Bill's morning class. Disappointed with Indian cricket team's performance down under as also dozing off in Policy II class. Delivering student address during graduation ceremony was a memorable moment. Loved the multicultural environment especially my friendship and cricket games with Pakistani guys. As also the soccer and basketball classes of my 5 year old son Tejas. Fortunately, during X-mas break I drove 11000 odd km across Australia with family. Found Gold Coast as the most happening and cool Canberra as fi lled with

institutions signifying Australian progress in diverse fields. Armidale is a beautiful hill station on slopes while scuba diving in the coral reefs was an out of the world experience. But my favourite is Adelaide-silent, laidback yet having all the

charms of a metropolitan city. Foodwise, I enjoyed Paul Chapman's campfi res as also the multicultural dinners in the campus as my wife loved bringing Indian food to these. I mostly enjoyed the Indian food at home (thanx to costly retaurants), visiting fast

foods once in a while especially Hindley street after midnight on weekends. Loved hosting an Indian food n games party for students on b'day of daughter Yashika. Lots of Bollywood movies (thanx library DVDs and theatres). Best was watching movie in the car (with kids perched on the rooftop) in the drive in theatre. Miss you all...mwah mwah....

I've had a fantastic experience studying part-time at CMU over the past 3.5 years. The hard work was made so much easier by the camaraderie and support I received from faculty, staff and my fellow students. I leave with many fond memories!

I am 6 ft tall and my favourite city is Adelaide the city of churches. I love African traditional foods. My being in CMU was a kind of mix experieince. In CMU, I was exposed to different cultures that I would have not kniown if not in CMU. I made a friends and I believe my friendship with these individual will be continuous one. Academically, It was a good and interesting experience. It was a hard going in some subjects will it rewarding in some. Aside of many useful and serious things I learned inside classroom, studying at CMU-A made me discovered wisdom of various culture brought along by students coming from around the world. One of them is to be grateful all the time,Terima Kasih, Asante, Dhanyawad, Syukriya, Gracias, Merci, Arigato, Xie xie, com on, ;-)

Nairobi is my favourite city. It's the capital city of Kenya and the largest city as well. It is quite an affordable city with easy access to almost everything. Quite busy and relatively safe. I love Buttered Chicken and a chilled mango lassi would do any day!!! I don't have a favourite movie but i am a real comedy freak. My experience in Adelaide and at CMU in particular was daunting at fi rst but as the days turned into months and then two years, i became more at ease and familiarity became the norm. I embraced a challenge i fi rst perceived impossible and now i feel like a winner having believed the 'yes we can' spirit!!! I have made lasting friendships and met wonderful people who have left me a better person. CMU was just timely and i thank God for such an amazing experience. It opened my eyes to a potential i never would have imagined i had within me. To even think i would have gone half way without the guidance

of God, the amazing support of my wonderful hubby, my prayer warriors, Mum and Dad, my sister and brothers and all the family & friends who encouraged me all the way would just be a big lie. Each one of you made the sky indeed be the only limit. Juggling between

work, school, family and a social life was enormously hard. I remember the many sleepless nights we spent burning the midnight oil with my dear friends, trying to fi nish up an assignment or studying for an exam. The end seemed unreachable, but here we are now. I know look into the

future with hope that something good comes out of this.

I really enjoyed living in Adelaide. It is such a lovely city. I like it because it is not crowded, doesn't have traffi c jam, and also like the family holiday spots here. And I also like the festivals it has here. To describe CMU, it's quite demanding but I love it. Thanks CMU for making me part of your never ending stories!I'll always remember this city, CMU and of my friends and instructors in CMU!

CMU Australia was an Odyssey into the soul and mind, the adventure was navigated through conquering moments of self doubt. I look back at the route and ponder on the moments that I fell and rose again, and I see a path carved out by perseverence. The momentum built up on this path keeps me on a trajectory pointing towards truth.

I carry with me the memories of the beautiful and multicultural Adelaide with a well-organized transportation, with asian spicy food and friendly people. My satisfaction lies one more time in the ways CMU cares about the students, organizing periodically entertainments so as to curtail the effects of assignments and exams pressures.

James: A very funny guy when he wants to be, and is a wonderful dad to his new little girl

Life is beautiful. It is full of surprises around every corner, a delightful mystery that unravels with every step we take towards our fate. It is a long path, where time goes fast. We all must be aware that we live in an amazing planet. All people around the globe have something unique and special to give, all cultures have something about them that contributes to a better world. One of the most important things we learn when traveling is to become more tolerant and open minded. In the last ten years I have lived in six different countries, met lots of people, learned languages, travel to places and enjoyed many moments that I will treasure forever. I believe life always gets better. Living and studying in Adelaide has been a remarkable experience. I have lived by the beach in a beautiful place, learned surfi ng, made many friends at uni, and more importantly, I have met the love of my life, who is now the mother of our beautiful baby girl. I am so grateful to this amazing country and to its people and will surely miss this land when we go back to Argentina. All the best to my fellow students, we will surely cross paths in the future, until then.

First thing people may want to know about me is I don't really like to talk about me. That's why updating my resume always becomes a task I postpone until I have no other option. Let me say just this: I feel a citizen of this world. I would love to travel everywhere, get to

know its people and culture and contribute to its improvement if necessary. That's why I appreciate very much my experience in CMU: it gave me the chance of meeting people from around the world, who were generous enough as to share with me their thoughts, food and laughs. A big thank you to all of you. I hope to see you all someday again. Thank you also to all CMU-A faculty and staff. Faculty members gave us a hard time, I have to confess. But as Barack Obama, now I can say: yes, I can; yes, we can! Surviving endless assignments and impossible deadlines showed us the extent of our capabilities. Time management is not one of the courses but I bet we all learned how to make the best of every minute of our time.

Thank you to Sharon, Nereshnee, Lourdes, Angelo and the rest for being always there and supporting us.I will miss my time at CMU-A (although I won't certainly miss spending the weekends at one of the project rooms).

My Blood Pressure is off the charts when Pakistan loses a cricket match (so it's usually normally high), but still love the team and the sport. I started a Small initiative called Foreign Donation, while getting my degrees here at CMU and my goal is to see this organization become a global entity. My favorite city is Guangzhou. I like sea food, no matter what kind of sea food. I like traveling. I really enjoy visiting a new place, meeting new people, tasting new food, and getting familiar with new culture and custom. My life in Adelaide at CMU was really amazing. We seem like a large family, holding party together, playing game together, and studying together. The most amazing experience should be the Halloween party - that night was really awesome!

My wife, Lindsay, and I absolutely loved living and studying in Adelaide. Although our campus there is small, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all of the professors, staff and my peers. Some of my favorite memories are playing basketball with my CMU classmates, studying on Glenelg Beach, and riding my bike down the Linear Park. While there we were able to see Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef, Tasmania and New Zealand. Great Times!

I enjoy the year stayed in Adelaide very much, it's a small city where every place is walkable, and you can always enjoy the beach when you get bored and tired of school. Adelaide's campus is really a very tight and family like community, I love everyone there.

My favorite city in Australia is Brisbane. Love the night view there, and casino? lol. I have traveled a lot when in Australia and really enjoyed the fresh air, kind people and beautiful natural resources there (even though the price is insane!). Reminds me of Kangaroo Island, the best place and ranks top in my "place to go for retirement" list now! Congratulations!!Though CMUA is not a big campus, it's really like a family there, we share food, BBQ and care about each other. Always we have parties going on on weekends! It's an experience I will never forgot, miss you guys~

I feel depressed when I fi rst came to CMUA. But it turned out to be a great place. It provided me a quiet place to think about people & life. It was good to see Colin on 8:30 am everyday. My favorite place in CMUA was the one behind the courtyard and my favorite food was cooked by Chaochen. I'd like to revisit Sydney. It's luxury to step on a ship sailing to work place in the morning. If life goes back I will choose Adelaide. It was great to have Chinese versus Americans basketball game with DeSean, Dan, Josiah, Andrew, Max, Zink, Franky, Anson, and Gordon.

I loved that Halloween party. It was my very fi rst Halloween party and I had such a great time. I missed the soccer game we played every weekend. As a huge soccer fan, I am thankful that I could share this passion every often with others and built our friendship. I missed seeing Collin, Sharon, Suzana and others' s smiley faces that cheer me up every day.Of course, what I have been missing the most, the Aussie BBQ!

Don't hesitate to love them and love ourself whiling pursuing dreams! The greatest thing I did in Adelaide was I rode to Victor Harbor and back last Christmas! This is really something I wanna do later. Forget about the advanced technology or the great transportation. Just get a bicycle and embrace the lovely nature and nice people in Oz! Their fi ngerprints are everywhere, but for some reason there were few group photographs of the Student's Social or Representative Committees for 2011 and 2012. Not unlike fabled Wombles, these shadowy figures of the Torrens Common like to work in the background - unseen by everyday folks - but striving for the betterment of all and trying to inject just a little bit of fun into the otherwise dreary lives of their fellow students. Much of the events and activities in the following pages are a testiment to their singular and combined efforts.
