When I was young, I learneda song, Count your blessings.Name them one by one. Count
your blessings. See what Godhas done. In this, my rstleer to you as President ofMother Seton Academy, Iwould like to share with yousome of the blessings that Ihave seen and experiencedhere. To list them all wouldbe beyond my limits, but let
me share with you a few of the highlights. The school year had already begun when I joined the
Mother Seton Academy Family. Because of the dedicationand hard work of the faculty, sta, board and other friendsof Mother Seton Academy, the school started smoothlywith an excited and eager student body. My welcomewas both warm and humbling. I am eager to join thiscommunity dedicated to providing an education for these
young men and women that will help them to realize theirGodgiven talents and to become leaders. In addition to strengthening our core curriculum, other
new instructional opportunities will include collaboration
with the Space Telescope Science Institute and MarylandInstitute College of Art (MICA). We will also continueour partnership with The Peabody Institute in providing
opportunities for music instruction for our students. Ourbasketball program is expanding this year to includea team for girls. We would not be able to provideopportunities such as these without the support of themany volunteers and benefactors who share our vision ofproviding a holistic, transformative education experiencefor our students.
I am grateful for the support and encouragement thatI have received from so many members of the MotherSeton Academy Family. Thank you for being a partner aswe continue this eort to prepare our students to becomeleaders in serving their families, communities and society. You are a blessing indeed.
Sincerely,
Sister Peggy Juskelis, SSNDPresident

MSA Becomes an AIMS SchoolIn May 2012, after a lengthy review process involving
interviews with sta, faculty, students and parents,Mother Seton Academy was informed that we were
approved as provisional members of the Associationof Independent Maryland & DC Schools (AIMS). RonGoldbla, Director of AIMS, said that the Board Membersof AIMS were very deeply impressed with Mother SetonAcademy and strongly believe that we measure up to thestandards of AIMS.
Founded in 1967, AIMS is a voluntary association ofapproximately 120 schools in Maryland and the District ofColumbia. The Association serves nearly 45,000 studentsand 6,000 professional educators. One of AIMS centralpurposes is to support eorts by member schools toimprove the pedagogy, curriculum and other areas ofschool operation. Accreditation is critical to this process.Every member school is required to be accredited in orderto demonstrate its commitment to high standards and on-going self-improvement.
We will embark upon a vigorous 18-month self-study
of our school, and prepare a wrien self-study report, undergo an intensive three-day visit by a team of outsideeducators, and develop a wrien Action Plan for ourschools improvement before we will be accepted as full-
edged members of the AIMS community of schools. Theaccreditation process will challenge us to account for theday-to-day quality with which we serve our students.
It also challenges us to engage in a continuous processof analysis and self-reection and to set a high bar ofexcellence.
The AIMS evaluation process is designed to provide aframework for continuous analysis, reection and learningby our faculty and sta so that we can serve our studentswith excellence. We are honored to be part of the AIMScommunity.

From where I was, it looked like it was going in,remembers James Rossi, head coach of the Mother SetonAcademy basketball team. On that afternoon in lateFebruary, Mother Seton Academys basketball teamtraveled to the School of the Cathedral of Mary our Queen
(Cathedral) to play their last game of the year. Cathedral, who is known for having one of the strongest CYO teamsin the area, warmly welcomed us to their gymnasium foran afternoon of basketball. The teams baled all game asthe score went back and forth. As the minutes turned toseconds on the game clock, Mother Seton Academy heldonto a one point lead. I kept reminding them to stickto the fundamentals. To stick to what we worked on allyear, said Rossi.
Good fundamentals are the foundation of a good teamStarting in November, Mother Seton Academys basketball
team practiced twice a week in our multi-purpose room.Coach Rossi, along with assistant coaches TJ Dygert andDrew Havens, spent those early practices shaping notonly the oense and defense, but the fundamentals. Wewanted the team to play together, to play hard, and to playthe game the right way, recalled Coach Rossi.
After four weeks of practicing, the team was readyto start playing games. Their rst test came against St.Ursulas in the Paul Kinney Classic. In the season opener,
Mother Seton Academy played well, but couldnt matchthe height of St. Ursulas. I thought we learned a greatdeal from that rst game. We were outrebounded, but ourteam played well. We played hard. We played together. The coaches told the team afterwards that we were proud

of how they played and that our mission was to keepgeing beer, said Rossi.
The rst game set the tone for the team, and with eachpassing game and scrimmage the team played beer. Moreimportantly, the fourteen boys continued to grow togetheras a team. A great example of this occurred the night thatthe team travelled to Loyola University to watch a mensbasketball game. Coach Rossi remembers, I thought ourteam really came together after that trip. We drove as ateam to Loyola. We ate as a team in the student dining hallwhere I have never seen 6 pizzas disappear so quickly! We
all sat together and watched the game in the stands. Theseteam-centered activities build good teamwork on the courtand in the classroom.
Mother Seton Academys last game of the year wasagainst Cathedral. Ahead by one point with only a fewseconds remaining, our coaching sta called its naltimeout and reminded their players to not foul the shooter.Coach Rossi recalls, I remember telling the team thatif the opposing player can make a buzzer beater from
half court, they deserve to win the game. Cathedralinbounded the ball to one of their best players. As thebuzzer sounded, Cathedral tossed a last second shot intothe air. The ball went o the backboard, hit the rim, andfell harmlessly to the oor. We had won! After the game,
both teams gathered at center court to shake hands, talkabout the game, and pose for pictures. Mother SetonAcademys rst season had ended with a win.
As Coach Rossi reected on the nal game, he couldnthelp but think about the year as a whole. We are sograteful for the sponsors and donors that support ourschool, especially Tom and Pam ONeil. We are alsoblessed with an administration that supported everythingthe team did. Our families did a tremendous job helpingour players balance school work and basketball. We alsowant to thank Cathedral, St. Ignatius, and St. Ursula for
hosting our program in our inaugural season. They wereessential to helping us build our program. With the 2012-2013 season on the horizon, there is a buzz
reverberating through the halls of Mother Seton Academy. This season, Mother Seton Academy will add a girlsbasketball team to their athletic program. In addition, boththe boys and girls teams will participate in a league. Staytuned for more news out of the athletic department atMother Seton Academy as the basketball program takes it
to the next level this year.
what seemed like an eternity.
