HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS Students interested in health care careers will find a wide choice of majors at Trocaire College. The college is well known for preparing qualified and competent health care professionals to meet the health care needs of society. Trocaire’s health care programs combine a liberal arts core, fostering critical thinking and communication skills, with practical training through on-campus laboratories and off campus clinical experiences. A career in health care is both challenging and rewarding.

DIETETIC TECHNOLOGY (A.A.S.) Dietetic Technicians work as members of the foodservice or health care team and are responsible for nutrition assessment, intervention, monitoring and evaluation of nutrition care. Combining Trocaire’s history of excellence in health sciences education with the Russell J. Salvatore School of Hospitality & Business, the Dietetic Technology curriculum combines the science of nutrition with the knowledge and skills of foodservice management.

Program courses include nutrition basics, food preparation, diet and disease, foodservice management, biology and chemistry. Graduates are prepared to work in a variety of settings:

• Health Care Settings – such as hospitals and nursing homes as part of the health care team developing a nutrition care plan to treat and prevent disease. • Schools and Facilities – managing employees, planning menus, purchasing and preparing food. • Community Health Programs – teaching nutrition classes to the public. • Food Companies and Industry – overseeing foodservice operations and food safety, and providing nutrient analysis for products.

MASSAGE THERAPY (A.A.S. OR CERTIFICATE)

Massage Therapy is a complimentary health care profession, whereby the practitioner applies manual therapeutic massage techniques and may apply adjunctive therapies, with the intention of positively affecting the health and well-being of the client. Trocaire’s Massage Therapy program combines lecture, college laboratory experiences, and a clinical component providing practical experience which may include hospital and medical settings. Students will also work at Trocaire’s own on-campus massage clinic, providing massage therapy to members of the general public, as well as the college community. The program is comprehensive in its coverage of both eastern and western massage therapy techniques.

The Massage Therapy program was developed to meet the increasing demand for qualified Massage Therapists in the community. Graduates of this program will be prepared to sit for the New York State Licensing Exam.

Students will also be eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, which, when other states’ requirements are met, will allow them to work in other states.

NURSING (A.A.S.) The Nursing program’s focus is on theory and clinical experiences that prepare the graduate for a beginning level of professional practice within a diverse and changing health care system. The curriculum emphasizes knowledge and skills needed to promote, maintain and restore health.

Clinical experiences are provided in a variety of Western New York (WNY) health care settings, including hospitals and community health care agencies. The program also includes a strong base in liberal arts. This enables the student to discover and confront their own values, beliefs and ideas and to sharpen their skills of critical analysis and expression. Students are encouraged to develop their critical thinking and decision making skills as they participate in their own learning experiences.

The program is registered by the New York State Education Department and is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing. (National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, 61 Broadway - 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006). At the completion of the program, graduates are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurse licensure.

The Nursing degree is offered in the day and in the evening. The day program is a full-time, two year program. The evening is a part-time, three-year program.

NURSING (B.S.) The Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Nursing was created to provide currently licensed Registered Nurses with strong leadership skills in collaborating with clients, other professional groups, and the community for the purpose of promoting, maintaining and restoring health. The program extends beyond the clinical aspects of nursing to provide a background in patient education, health promotion, community health, health care across the life span, and technology integration. Graduates of this baccalaureate program will base their practice on theories, critical-thinking, and research findings from nursing science as well as other disciplines. Courses, all of which are offered as distance education in the hybrid or blended format, are designed specifically for the practicing nurse, drawing from, and expanding upon, real-life professional nursing experiences.

RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY (A.A.S.) Radiologic Technology is a health care profession combining state-of-the-art technology and imaging techniques with human compassion to provide a rewarding career in the medical field. Through the use of ionizing radiation, radiologic technologists produce diagnostic images used for the diagnosis and treatment of disease/injury. As professionals, radiologic technologists are required to observe the ethical and professional standards expected of all persons involved in caring for patients in healthcare settings.

The Radiologic Technology Program is a two-year program with lecture and laboratory components provided at the college. Coursework includes human anatomy and physiology, methods of patient care, physics of x-ray production, positioning techniques, image production and evaluation, and radiation safety. Related clinical experiences are obtained at numerous area hospitals or health care agencies.

Trocaire’s Radiologic Technology Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRC/ERT) located at: 20 N. Wacker Drive, Suite 2850 Chicago, IL 60606 www.jrcert.org.

SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY (A.A.S.) Surgical Technologists are crucial members of the surgical team, working closely with surgeons, registered nurses and anesthesiologists to provide the best possible environment for the patient undergoing surgical intervention. The primary role of the “Scrub Tech” is to prepare and maintain a sterile field and pass instruments to the surgeon during the surgical procedure.

Lecture and laboratory experiences introduce concepts relating to patient need, surgical conditions and routines, and human behavior and communication. Clinical sites are provided at area health care facilities, allowing the student practical training which reinforces concepts learned in the classroom.

The Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC-STSA) in cooperation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). National certification is available to graduates through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY (B.S.) Trocaire College is registered with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) for a Bachelor’s of Science degree with a major in Radiologic Technology (RT) and a specialty in Computed Tomography (CT). Trocaire’s B.S. in RT program will build upon and complement the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in RT currently available at Trocaire. The B.S. in RT program is an undergraduate degree designed to prepare skilled entry-level RT’s for positions as CT specialists. Moreover, application of applied physical and biological sciences at the B.S. level extends career opportunities beyond the specific RT profession into the broader sphere of biomedical imaging.

Trocaire’s B.S. in RT program is designed on a 2+2 format, whereby interested students that are licensed radiologic technologists possessing a two-year A.A.S. degree in RT, with ARRT certification or equivalent, can successfully obtain their B.S. degree by completing two additional years of study with courses offered in the evening and on weekends. This provides the flexibility for RT’s to continue working while completing their degree.

With the additional education and experience afforded by the B.S. in RT program, graduates will be better prepared for employment as tomographic imaging specialists, radiologic administrators, clinical and basic science researchers and teachers. B.S. RT graduates may also decide to further their education in any number of graduate programs currently available at the M.S. and Ph.D. level in medical physics and medical imaging disciplines.

HEALTH CARE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY (CERTIFICATE)

Diagnostic Sonography involves the use of sound waves to record anatomic structures within the body. The program’s concentration is in the abdominal organs, OB/GYN and superficial structures. Graduates of this program will be highly skilled to perform such examinations, provide patient care, record the anatomic, pathologic and physiologic data for interpretation by the physician.

This twelve-month certificate program combines evening classes with a required day clinical experience. At the conclusion of this program, the student will be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification examinations.

Prerequisites: Admission to the program is limited to American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (R) Credentialed Diagnostic Radiographers with a 3.0 final semester GPA in RT coursework or a Medical Physician (M. D.).

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY (CERTIFICATE) This program is a specialized concentration within the field of ultrasound applied to structures of the heart. The Cardiac Sonographer is a skilled person qualified to perform echocardiography exams under the supervision of a qualified physician.

This twelve-month certificate program is a combination of evening courses with a required day clinical experience. At the conclusion of this program, the student will be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification examinations.

Prerequisites: Admission to the program is limited to graduates of an Allied Health program with an A.A.S., B.S. or Diploma. (Examples: 2 years Radiologic Technology education and ARRT, Radiation Therapist, R.N., Occupational Therapist, Physical Assistant, Respiratory Therapist, Surgical Technologist, M.D., or D.O. credential). The Allied Health program must include direct patient care. A minimum of a 3.0 semester average attained in the final semester of program coursework. College preparatory course in physics.

PRACTICAL NURSING (CERTIFICATE) The Practical Nursing program prepares the individual for a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). This is the only college credit bearing program in Western New York (WNY). We educate our graduates to provide clinically competent patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (R.N.) and to function successfully with other members of the health care team.

The licensed practical nurse performs tasks and responsibilities within the framework of case finding, health teaching and health counseling. An LPN also provides supportive and restorative care under the direction of a registered professional nurse or licensed physician. Clinical experiences are provided in a variety of WNY health care settings including hospitals and community health care agencies. Graduates of the PN program will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing Licensure.

BUSINESS ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS (A.A.S.)

Trocaire College’s Business Programs are designed to meet the needs of individuals who wish to immediately enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year institution and continue their studies towards a baccalaureate degree.

The college’s associate degree programs offer a liberal arts core that teaches necessary critical thinking skills, as well as strong communication, decision-making and interpersonal skills. The business core offers organizational and technical skills combined with specific coursework that trains the student for success in dealing with today’s modern workplace. Our business students are provided a high quality technical environment. Computer laboratories equipped with the latest in office computer hardware, including multimedia and web access, serve all programs.

HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (A.A.S.)

A career in Health Information Technology is a combination of health care, business, and information technology. Health Information Technicians collect, organize, analyze, report, and maintain patient health information for physicians, nurses, and other health care providers who rely on that data to deliver quality health care. They assign codes to diseases, procedures, and supplies for billing purposes and compile statistics for health care planning and quality improvement, indices, disease registries, and research studies. Using manual and computerized storage and retrieval systems, Health Information Technicians manage the compilation and release of health information documentation.

Professionals in this field work in over 40 settings wherever health information is managed including hospitals, physician offices, nursing homes, home health agencies, ambulatory care clinics, insurance companies, government agencies, mental health and substance abuse facilities, correctional facilities, pharmaceutical companies, research companies, and consulting firms. There are 125 different job titles available in this field which afford health information professionals numerous options and opportunities for growth.

Classes in the Health Information Technology associate’s degree program are offered in the evening in order to support the working professional.

MEDICAL ASSISTANT (A.A.S.) The Medical Assistant graduate will be prepared with the skills necessary to assist with patient care management, as well as to perform administrative and clinical procedures. Students will be prepared for employment in clinics, hospitals, and in medical group practices, where experience and expertise in clinical skills are required.

Students will complete a strong core of liberal arts classes, as well as required medical assisting classes in both administrative and clinical skills. The A.A.S. Human Resource Management Program provides its successful graduates with the skills necessary for entry level employment or the ability to transfer to both local and national four-year Human Resource programs.

The Human Resource Management program will prepare graduates:

The Russell J. Salvatore School of Hospitality & Business is located at 6681 Transit Road, (at Freeman Road) Williamsville, NY 14221. Program laboratories are designed to simulate actual work environments. Many liberal arts courses are offered online and students have access to a student portal, as well as Moodle, for classroom related resources. You will be assigned a Trocaire College email address once you begin school and will be registered into our emergency notification system so that you will know if the school is closed or of any emergency information.

The PalisanoCenterforAcademicSuccess(PCAS) provides the extra help you may need from time to time. STUDENT AFFAIRS

Trocaire’s Student Affairs Department provides assistance to students in the following areas: Counseling, Career Assistance, Leadership Development, Student Activities, Campus Ministry, and the Health Office.

SERVICE LEARNING Students who are enrolled in classes offering an option for service learning perform 16 hours of service at designated community sites and receive classroom credit for their experience. Service Learning integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

APPLYING TO TROCAIRE • Apply online for FREE at www.trocaire.edu.

• Call your high school and request that your Official High School Transcript be sent to Trocaire College, 360 Choate Ave., Buffalo, NY 14220, Attention: Admissions.

• If you did not finish High School, we will still need your High School Transcript up to the time you stopped attending, as well as your official GED transcript.

• Send all Official College Transcripts from any colleges you have attended.

• Take the ACCUPLACER Placement Test. Appointments can be made by calling the Admissions Office at 716-827-2545. (Call 716-827-4300 to take the Placement Test at the Transit location if you apply for Computer Network Administration, Dietetic Technology, Hospitality Management, or Human Resource Management).

CAREER CENTER SERVICES Trocaire College has a commitment to preparing graduates for successful careers, and the Career Center helps ensure the college keeps this commitment. Students and alumni of Trocaire benefit from the individualized career counseling and job search assistance including resume and cover letter writing and preparation for a job interview. Each semester, the Career Center connects students with employers by organizing Job Fairs and maintaining employment references. Other valuable resources available within the Career Center include posts of current job openings, a web based self-assessment and career planning system, and a library of career publications.

Students interested in continuing their education upon graduation from Trocaire receive advisement on an individualized or small group basis.

ACCUPLACER PLACEMENT TEST All applicants are required to take the ACCUPLACER and computer skills placement tests. The tests will determine if you need to take remedial coursework. The tests are free to take and are administered in the Palisano Center for Academic Success which is located within the Palisano Center for Academic Success; located on the 4th floor at 360 Choate Avenue in the wing next to the library. Applicants for Computer Network Administration, Dietetic Technology, Hospitality Management, and Human Resource Management may take the placement test at the Russell J. Salvatore School of Hospitality & Business at 6681 Transit Road, Williamsville, NY 14221.

All questions are multiple choice. Although the ACCUPLACER and computer skills tests are administered on a computer, no previous computer experience is needed. You may want to bring a pen or pencil with you as scrap paper will be provided, otherwise you do not need to bring anything with you when you come to take the test.

You will be tested on your sentence skills, reading comprehension skills, arithmetic skills, and computer skills.

The ACCUPLACER and computer skills tests are not timed tests, you will have as much time as you need to answer any question on the test. We have found that most people finish the test in about 1 1/2 hours. It is important to take as much time as you need to do your best. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Candidates for admission to the College must have graduated from an approved secondary school with a minimum of sixteen credit units or must provide evidence that an equivalent degree (GED) has been completed (or will be completed in keeping with New York State Guidelines for Equivalency Diploma or based on earned college credit).

FOREIGN STUDENT ADMISSION Foreign students seeking admission must follow the regular admission procedures. Students must also provide evidence that they have a command of the English Language. The College may require satisfactory grades on a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The College will also accept the ASPECT Level 7 English Language Proficiency Course in lieu of TOEFL.

Official transcripts of secondary and post secondary schools should be forwarded to the Office of Admissions.

When the transcript is not written in English, a certified translation is required.

FINANCIAL AID You will not know if you are eligible unless you complete your FAFSA. It is for this reason that Trocaire recommends that every student apply for financial aid.

YOU’RE WORTH THE INVESTMENT! A quality education can be costly. Family budgets may not always be prepared for the investments which college requires. Trocaire believes that students should select the college that is the best investment for their future career; not one that is selected based on educational cost alone. Once a decision is reached, financial aid can make your educational investment more affordable.

TUITION Tuition cost is subject to change. Additional fees are assessed depending upon specific coursework, as well as programs of study. VETERAN SERVICES Thanks to the support of federal, state, and financial aid programs, most veterans and their dependents can attend Trocaire College with little of no financial obligation. Our hard working staff will go above and beyond to help the military families that have served our country. CRIME STATISTICS The Campus Safety Department records information relevant to any crime-related activity occurring on campus. Statistics are published annually.

All campus crime statistics are available upon request through our Director of Security at 716-827-2564. Information is also available on the U.S. Department of Education website (http://ope.ed.gov/security). When necessary, security alerts are posted throughout the campus. A security advisory committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students meet each semester to discuss security related matters.
