The Women’s Hockey East Association will celebrate its 10th anniversary season of play after officially commencing league action in the fall of 2002. In nine years, the conference has emerged as one of the top women’s ice hockey conferences in the nation, having sent five teams to the Frozen Four and 11 teams to the NCAA Tournament, which includes the most successful season in 2010-2011, sending Boston University and Boston College to the Frozen Four with the Terriers making the league’s second appearance in the NCAA National Championship Game. In 2011, the Boston College Eagles earned their first WHEA Tournament Championship in school history defeating Northeastern. The Terriers hosted the ninth annual tournament championship at Walter Brown Arena as the top seed in the tournament, claiming first regular-season championship in school history. BC’s Kelli Stack was named Player of the Year for a league-record third time in the spring and BU’s Marie-Philip Poulin took home Rookie of the Year honors. PC’s Bob Deraney won the Coach of the Year Award for the second consecutive season. Vermont freshman defensemen Megan Dalbec posted a 4.0 GPA to earn Hockey East Top-Scholar Athlete honors headlining the list of a league-

record 89 student-athletes named to the WHEA All-Academic Team in 2010-2011. The league also honored four student-athletes that received “Distinguished Scholar” status. Those earning “Dis-tinguished Scholar” status achieved a 3.0 or better in each semester over four varsity seasons. Maine’s Jennie Gallo and Danielle Cyr were two teammates honored with the distinction, while Boston College’s Molly Schaus and UNH’s Kayley Herman were also recipients of the honor. In February 2007, the league debuted its inaugural “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer”. The one-day event was hosted by Hockey East schools as a way to establish a greater fan base, to raise needed funds, and to work with the specific charities to raise awareness for both the league and the specific cause. In the initial year, close to $20,000 was donated back to local breast cancer charities (Friends of Mel’s Foundation and the American Cancer Society), vastly exceeding expectations. Last year, over $31,000 dollars was raised to bring the four-year total to over $145,000. “Skating Strides” has won two national awards at NACMA in the “Single Day Attendance Promotion” category in 2007 and 2009. The fifth annual “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” will have an event on every WHEA campus this season, as well as participation by all of the Hockey East men’s teams over the course of a two weekends. As women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its current status as an established NCAA championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East should seriously consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member

schools that initially had varsity programs for women: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence. The uncertainty remained until a split in the Eastern College Athletic Conference grouped the five aforementioned programs into a separate league, the ECAC Women’s Eastern League, along with three other unaffiliated programs. Seeking league solidarity, administrators from the five Hockey East institutions acted. In September of 2001, the long-incubated idea became a reality when the athletic directors voted to found the new women’s league under the existing Hockey East banner, with play scheduled to begin no later than the 2004-05 season. The five schools with varsity programs entered as charter members with the stipulation that any other Hockey East school that added a varsity women’s program in the future would be freely admitted to the league. Expediting the process in the interests of the participating teams, the league and the sport itself, Commissioner Joe Bertagna worked with a se-lected task force to successfully prepare the Hockey East women’s league for launch in the 2002-03 season, two years ahead of schedule. An important part of that process was the acceptance of an invitation extended to the University of Connecticut to join the newly formed league as its sixth active member. The triumphant effort immediately afforded the participating administrators a stronger voice in the advancement of their women’s ice hockey pro-grams and alleviated the ECAC of continuing the maintenance of the Women’s Eastern League. Players, fans, coaches and administrators alike were all anticipating the intensified competition created by the new circle of teams that were already familiar rivals. In 2005, the Women’s Hockey East Association welcomed the addition of two more teams to its growing family, Boston University and the University of Vermont. For BU, it marked the inaugural season for women’s hockey as a varsity sport. Although the Women’s Hockey East Association is still in its infancy, its member programs have storied histories that include several championships and individual awards at the highest levels of play. The first 13 ECAC championships were shared among New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence, all charter members of Hockey East. Northeastern forward Brooke Whitney was named the recipient of the 2002 Patty Kazmaier Award as the nation’s top female collegiate player, an honor first won by New Hampshire’s Brandy Fisher in 1998. Had the award been in existence beforehand, it surely would have been won at some point by Cammi Granato, a three-time ECAC Player of the Year who led Providence to back-to-back championships in 1992 and 1993. Five years later, in 1998, alongside nine other alums of what are now Hockey East programs, Granato captained Team USA to the Olympic gold medal during the first Olympic tournament that featured women’s ice hockey as a medal sport. Beginning in 2009, the WHEA athletic directors voted to honor the league Player of the Year with the Cammi Granato Award. Perhaps the proudest legacy that the Women’s Hockey East Association has established is the Hockey Humanitarian Award. The most prestigious off-ice honor, and arguably the highest overall honor in the sport, the Hockey Humanitarian Award recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen each year and encompasses both male and female athletes in all divisions. Its winners have demonstrated outstanding contributions to society through leadership in charity work and volunteerism. Northeastern senior forward Missy Elumba was the 2009 recipient, as the fifth Hockey East student-athlete to receive the prestigious honor. Elumba was the 14th all-time recipient and joined former Husky goaltender Chanda Gunn, who received the award in 2004, as the second athlete in Northeastern women’s hockey history. BC’s Sarah Carlson received it in 2005, making Women’s Hockey East the first league to boast back-to-back winners.

the formation of College Hockey, Inc., the marketing arm of the HCA, which was established in 2009. Beyond his college hockey accomplish-ments, Bertagna has forged an interna-tional reputation as a student and coach of goaltending. No one in North America is respected more for his contributions to the study of the position. As a player, Bertagna began at Arlington (MA) High School, and then went on to Harvard University, playing for three Hall of Fame coaches: Ed Burns at Arlington and Ralph “Cooney” Weiland and Bill Cleary at Harvard. A two-year starter at Harvard (1971-72 and 1972-73), Bertagna led the Ivy League with a 2.45 GAA in 1972. After Harvard, he played professionally for the Milwaukee Admirals and in Cortina, Italy. He led his S.G. Cortina d’Ampezzo squad to the 1975 Italian Championship. He began his professional coaching ca-reer in 1985 with the Boston Bruins, staying with the Bruins as the goaltender coach until 1991 and rejoining the team for the 1994-95 season. He also has coached with Team USA (1991 Canada Cup and 1994 Winter Olympics) and with the Milwaukee Admirals (1994-96). Bertagna has operated his own goalie clinics since 1973, and in that time, has coached thousands of goalies of all ages throughout New England. He contin-ues to speak on the subject for USA Hockey throughout the United States. Through his camps, lectures, print materials and DVDs, he has influenced the teaching of young goaltenders more than any other goaltend-ing coach in the United States. His seventh DVD, “Goaltending Today: Traditional Values through New Techniques,” was released by Championship Productions of Ames, Iowa. Bertagna enjoyed a brief college coach-ing career at Harvard University in the late 1970’s, serving as Men’s Junior Varsity Coach in 1976-77 and launching Harvard’s women’s ice hockey program in 1977-78. He served as head coach of Harvard Women’s Hockey for two seasons. Both programs have established perpetual awards in his name. Bertagna and his wife Kathy, a two-sport athlete at Bates College, reside in Glouces-ter with their three children, Bobby (15), Joey (13) and Grace (11).

Hockey East Commis-sioner Joe Bertagna is in his 30th year as a college hockey ad-ministrator, his 15th year with Hockey East, after serving in a similar capacity with the Eastern Col-lege Athletic Confer-ence (ECAC) for 15 years. He is already the longest serving

commissioner in Hockey East’s 28-year history.Since the conclusion of last season, Bertag-na engineered a number of triumphs for the conference, including three new television contracts, another sold-out event at Fenway Park, and the addition of the University of Notre Dame to the conference beginning with the 2013-14 season. Bertagna, who was given a contract extension through the 2013-14 season in July of 2011, has carved out a unique career in the sport he first played as a freshman goalie at Harvard Univer-sity in 1969. After spending 15 years as the primary ice hockey adminis-trator the East-ern College Ath-letic Conference (ECAC), Bertagna became Hockey East’s fourth com-missioner on July 1, 1997. A native of Arlington, Mas-sachusetts, Ber-tagna began work-ing at the ECAC in 1982, when he was named Tournament Director. He was later named Executive Director of Ice Hockey and then became Ice Hockey Commissioner in 1991. In these roles, he administered regular season and tournament play for 90 men’s and women’s varsity programs. His accomplishments at the ECAC included the league’s first televi-sion package, the first hockey-only corpo-rate sponsorships, and the establishment of the first U.S. women’s intercollegiate ice hockey leagues. Bertagna made his mark immediately at Hockey East, engineering a multi-year televi-sion deal (SportsChannel New England) in his first month on the job. Shortly thereafter, league tournament attendance rocketed for-ward, leading to the event’s first-ever sellout in 2000. Bertagna was also instrumental in bringing about the formation of the Hockey East Women’s League, just as he initiated league play for both Division I and Division III women’s programs while with the ECAC. Hockey East has enjoyed unparalleled success on the ice during Bertagna’s ten-ure, winning five national championships, including three of the last four, and regularly

enjoying post-season accolades for many of its student-athletes. Five of the last nine players recognized as “Hobey Hat Trick” honorees have come from Hockey East. Media coverage has soared in this period, as evidenced by the signing of two national contracts this past year, a renewal with CBS Sports Network and a first-ever deal with Versus/NBC Sports Network. Further, a new four-year contract with the New England Sports Network (NESN) provides unprecedented local coverage. Bertagna also oversaw the signing of the first re-gional radio contract for the Hockey East Championships when the Boston Bruins’ flagship station, “98.5, the Sports Hub,” broadcast the 2010 championships from the TD Garden. In January of 2010, Bertagna and his staff administered the first outdoor college hockey game in the East when Boston’s fabled Fenway Park hosted a Hockey East doubleheader. The event, which sold out on the first day of public sale in September of 2009, was an unprecedented success for the conference, both financially and in terms

of exposure. This past sum-mer, Bertagna negotiated an-other contract with the Red Sox, creating a doublehead-er for Janu-ary of 2012, t h i s e v e n t featuring the league’s four Division I state univers i t ies, Maine, Massa-chusetts, New Hampshire and

Vermont. As in 2010, this event sold out, leading to the Red Sox adding a Boston College vs. Northeastern game. Nationally, Bertagna has served as the Executive Director of the American Hockey Coaches Association since 1991, the only person to serve in that capacity. In that role, he has overseen the growth of AHCA membership from fewer than 300 members in 1992 to over 1,400 members today. He also served a four-year term on the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee, the final two years as chairman. He also serves on the Board of Directors of USA Hockey and the Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation. Perhaps his biggest contributions on the national scene have come in his continuing role with the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA). The commissioners of the five NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey confer-ences have launched a number of initiatives that have helped grow the game on the national and international levels. In recent years, Bertagna was instrumental in securing funds for

Kathy Wynters is entering her sixth season as Associate Commissioner, eigthteenth year overall with the conference. As Joe Bertagna’s chief assistant, her primary responsibilities include the day-to-day operations of both the men’s and women’s leagues, along with the administration of tournaments and special events, marketing and branding initiatives, and the licensing and sponsorship programs. Prior to her promotion, Wynters served Hockey East as Director of Marketing and Special Events from 2002-06.

Wynters was the driving force behind the creation of both “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” and the Hockey East Kids’ Club. In five years, the Skating Strides program has raised over $145,000 for breast cancer awareness and research, while at the same time increased attendance at women’s hockey games and gave the student-athletes the opportunity to give back to the communities in which they study and play hockey. “Skating Strides” was nationally recognized twice (2007 & 2009) by NACDA/NACMA with medals for “Single Day Attendance Promotion of an Olympic Sport”.

During Kathy’s tenure, the Hockey East corporate sponsorship program has grown to include several new partnerships, many breaking ground beyond traditional hockey companies. In addition, the Hockey East licensing program has also expanded to include many new licensees, as well as increased revenues from licensed merchandise, including an expanded offering at the conference championships. Kathy is instrumental in both the marketing efforts and logistical operations behind Hockey East’s special events, including this years’ Frozen Fenway 2012 and the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Women’s League.

Wynters previously served Hockey East as Assistant Commissioner during the late 80’s and early 90’s, before going on to work for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL, spending three years as a Marketing Director, coordinating licensing and souvenir merchandising. Wynters also spent five years as marketing manager for PictureTel Corporation. A native of Quincy, MA, the former Kathy Walsh earned a B.S. degree in marketing from Providence Col-

lege in 1982. She began her career while an undergraduate, as a three-year intern with the men’s hockey team. Following graduation, she served the Friars in two capacities; first as Assistant Sports Information Director (primary men’s hockey contact) and then as Director of Athletic Marketing.

While at PC, and before Hockey East had a full-time staff, Wynters worked with former PC athletic director, and then Commissioner, Lou Lamoriello on the launch of the confer-ence in 1983, and then coordinated the first three Hockey East championship tournaments (1985-87). She also managed the 1986 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four at the Providence Civic Center, co-hosted by Brown University and Providence College. In 1988, Wynters left her position at PC and moved over to Hockey East on a full-time basis. Among her earlier accomplishments at Hockey East, Wynters worked with Joe Bertagna in coordinating the first and only “Hockeyfest” events, combining the ECAC and Hockey East championships into single weekend events from 1989-91.

Kathy and her husband Chuck (a retired on-ice official for Hockey East), are the parents of two: daughter Annie (19), a sophomore at the College of the Holy Cross, and son C.J. (18), a freshman at Bridgewater State University. The Wynters family resides in Waltham.

Pete Souris enters his fifth season with the conference office and was promoted to Assistant Commissioner in the summer of 2010.

He was very involved in the 25th anniversary celebration, as he oversaw the production of the league’s 25th anniversary DVD and has played an integral role in the improvements to hockeyeastonline.com over the last two years.

Souris brings 15 years of experience to the post, and had been affiliated with the UNH athletic department since he was a student in the mid-1990’s. After earning his BS in Kinesiology: Sport Studies in December of 2001, Souris was promoted to the post of assistant director of media relations the following summer, and three years later was named associate director. In 2006, he also assumed responsibility for managing the department’s web site (unhwildcats.com).

In addition to serving as the primary media contact for the UNH men’s hockey team for seven seasons, Souris was the lead contact for the school’s women’s vol-leyball team for 10 years. Souris also served as primary media coordinator for the NCAA men’s hockey Northeast Regionals in Manchester, NH, in 2004 and 2007. He has also worked the last 11 Frozen Fours, dating back to 1999-2000.

Souris is also a member of the New England Patriots gameday media relations staff, working as a member of the statcrew. He also does freelance television work as a graphics coordinator, scorebug operator and statistician. Souris also serves as the video replay technician for the Boston Bruins.

Souris, a 1995 graduate of Beverly High School, resides in Beverly, Mass.

Dave Lezenski has worked with Hockey East for the past six seasons, assisting the Supervisor of Officials for the first four seasons and was promoted as the Supervisor of Officials for the women’s league in the fall of 2009. Lezenski also works for the NCAA during the men’s and women’s national tournaments with video replay and officials evaluation.

The former NIHOA and ECAC veteran official is a native of Lynn, Mass. Professionally, he serves as a Director of Athletics,

Physical Education and Health in Billerica Public Schools and is actively involved with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Lezenski resides in Lowell, Mass.

teRRieRs tabbeD to take home whea cRown foR seconD stRaiGht seasonHockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna released the 2011-12 WHEA preseason coaches poll for the upcoming 10th anniversary season on Tuesday, Sept. 20the

The Boston University Terriers are the favorites to win the league championship for the second consecutive season, after winning the regular-season championship last season with a 15-3-3 record and 33 points in the league standings. BU garnered six of the eight first-place votes and 55 total points. The Terriers are coming off their best season in program history, as they earned their second con-secutive NCAA Tournament berth and made the conference’s first appearance in the NCAA Cham-pionship Game vs. Wisconsin last spring. BU returns senior Jenn Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) and sophomore Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.), the second and fifth leading scorers in league play last year, to go along with Kerrin Sperry (North Reading, Mass.), the reigning WHEA Goaltending Champion.

Boston College (51 pts.) is right behind the Terriers in the poll, garnering two first place votes. The Eagles return seven of their top eight scorers from last season’s squad that took home the school’s first-ever WHEA Tournament Championship defeating Northeastern and advanced to the Frozen Four. Senior forward Mary Restuccia (Chester Springs, Pa.) is the Eagles leading returning scorer with 22 points in 21 league games last year and is league’s second returning leading point getter from a season ago. Freshman Alex Carpenter (Reading, Mass.) is one of seven first-year players at the Heights and should be one of the top freshmen in the league this season.

Northeastern’s third place prediction is the highest in team history. The Huskies, who garnered 42 points in the preseason voting, return 16 players from last year’s team that appeared in the WHEA title game for the first time in school history, including 2010 WHEA Player of the Year Florence Schelling (Oberengstringen, Switzerland). Northeastern will also add nine newcomers to the 11-12 team, including highly touted recruit Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.).

Providence (39) is led by two-time WHEA Coach of the Year Bob Deraney and will return 76% of the team’s scoring from its team that finished in third place in 2011. Senior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ont.) will once again be the anchor of the Friars’ defense. Her 526 saves in league play was third among league netminders.

Connecticut (31 pts.) will return six of its top seven scorers from a year ago and will be accompanied on the defensive side of the ice by senior netminder Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.). Garcia’s .943 save percentage in league play last season

was second best among WHEA goalies, while her 598 saves was most among any goaltender in league play.

Vermont (24) was chosen sixth in the poll and will feature sopho-more Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, Que.) in goal for the Catamounts. She posted impressive numbers in her rookie season with a 1.96 GAA and .928 save percentage in 18 league contests.

New Hampshire (21) and Maine (18) rounded out the pre-season coaches poll. The Wildcats return their top two scorers in Arielle O’Neill (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Kristina Lavoie (Fonthill, Ont.). The Black Bears are looking to capitilize off their sixth place finish last year and their first tournament appearance in last four seasons. Second-year head coach Maria Lewis returns 84% of the team’s scoring from last season and will feature the goaltending tandem of Candice Currier (Goffstown, N.H.) and Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.).

The league’s 10th anniversary season will open when Maine hosts Sacred Heart at Alfond Arena for a two-game series beginning this Friday, September 23rd. The conference schedule will com-mence on Friday, October 14 as UNH hosts Boston College at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.

In five years, the Skating Strides program has raised over $150,000 for breast cancer awareness and research, while at the same time increased attendance at women’s hock-ey games and gave the student-athletes the opportunity to give back to the communities in which they study and play hockey. “Skat-ing Strides” was nationally recognized twice (2007 & 2009) by NACDA/NACMA with med-als for “Single Day Attendance Promotion of an Olympic Sport”.

“2012 WHEA Skating Strides”

All proceeds from Skating Strides 2012 will benefit the following breast cancer charities:

HOCKEY EAST ALL-STARS bATTLE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM AT UNH FOR SECOND TIME ON NOV. 22, 2009

The Hockey East All-Stars faced the 2010 U.S. National Team at

UNH’s Whittemore Center

The Women’s Hockey East Association, in conjunction with USA Hockey and the University of New Hampshire, host the second WHEA All-Star game on Sunday, November 22, at UNH’s Whittemore Center, as part of Team USA’s Qwest Tour. The tour is designed to pit the U.S. Women’s National Team against elite-level competition in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. The top play-ers from each of the eight Hockey East teams will be selected to represent the league in an All-Star-style competition against the 2010 U.S. National Team, which won a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, B.C. Team USA’s roster had a great showing of WHEA alums and current players including: UNH alum Kacey Bellamy, Boston College’s Molly Schuas and Kelli Stack, along with PC alum Karen Thatcher. BC head coach Katie King served as the WHEA All-Stars head coach.

Nov. 22, 2009 recap: Hockey East put up a good fight and held Team USA to their lowest goal output of the Qwest Tour, with only four goals. Despite the 4-0 loss, WHEA was also able to stop all power play attempts as Team USA went 0-6 on the power play. Northeastern’s Florence Schelling was named the Hockey East All-Stars Player of the Game with her standout performance in goal, stopping 19 of the 20 shots she faced.

Dec. 11, 2005 recap: The WHEA All-Stars jumped out to a surprising 2-0 first-period lead thanks to goals by Boston University’s Cara Hendry and Maine defenseman Kelly Law. But the National Team came storming back with two goals in the first 2:07 of the second period and it was a dogfight the rest of the way. Team USA got the bulk of the shots-on-goal, and finally grabbed the lead midway through the third when former Harvard star Angela Ruggiero got the first of two quick goals leading the team to a 5-2 vic-tory. UConn goalie Kaitlyn Shain was impressive against the high-powered Olympians, stopping 41 shots, while former Northeastern All-American Chanda Gunn was in net for Team USA and finished with 10 saves. “This Hockey East Team is probably the college team that extended us the most,” said former Team USA coach Ben Smith. UConn’s Heather Linstad, the senior member of women’s Hockey East coaching fraternity served as head coach of the All-Star squad.

Arguably the highest individual honor in the sport of college ice hockey, the Hockey Humanitarian Award bridges any gender gap between the men’s and women’s game as well as any perceived talent gap between divisions. Annually presented to the athlete that best demonstrates the highest qualities of humanity, the award has become a symbol for everything that is right with college athletics, and it is an honor just to be nominated for the award, or to be selected as one of the annual finalists.
