We are Unstoppable

We are people who want toDO something about MS NOW.

Who is the National Multiple Sclerosis Society? The National MS Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something about MS now—to move together toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. MS stops people from moving. We exist to make sure it doesn’t.We help each person address the challenges of living with MS through our 50-state network of chapters. The Society helps people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services that help people with MS and their families move their lives forward.•We are moving research forward by relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and cure. •We are moving to reach out and respond to individuals, families and communities living with multiple sclerosis. •We are moving politicians and legislation to champion the needs of people with MS through activism, advocacy and influence. •We are moving to mobilize the millions of people who want to do something about MS now.

The North Florida ChapterThe North Florida Chapter is one of a network of nationwide chapters that represent the National MS Society. Founded in 1973 the chapter offers education, support and wellness programs to people living in a 34-county area from Jacksonville in the east, south to Gainesville, and west to Pensacola. The chapter serves more than 3,000 people who live with MS, as well as their families, friends, caregivers, and health care providers. The chapter engages individuals who want to do something about MS now through its volunteer and advocacy activates. In 2011 the chapter raised $2,113,992 to do something NOW about MS. This is a 6.4% increase over last year.

ProgramsMS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. We help each person address the challenges of living with MS every day through the programs and services of the North Florida Chapter.

•The Chapter offered emotional support for people living with MS and their families through 14 area support groups and peer telephone support volunteers. These support programs offer many avenues for encouragement, information, and an opportunity to build new relationships.

•The Chapter’s Financial Assistance Program was designed to bring meaningful financial assistance to people living with MS, with emphasis on helping maintain their independence, safety, health and quality of life. In 2011, the Chapter spent more than $45,000 and leveraged an additional $20,000 in community resources to help people with MS receive short-term home care and respite services, medical equipment, home and auto modifications and wellness support.

We are a driving force of MS research, relentlessly pursuing

prevention, treatment, and cure.

Research

We are a driving force of MS research and treatment to stop disease progression, restore function, and end MS forever. The National MS Society supports and funds research activi-ties spanning all research stages, including early discovery research, translational research that brings promising ideas forward into actual therapeutic solutions for testing, and clinical trials. Our unique approach drives the pursuit of all promising avenues that can impact those living with multiple sclerosis.

In 2011 the North Florida Chapter contributed more than $778,000 to research, more than 50% more than last year’s research contribution. The Chapter also earmarked $75,000 for a clinical fellowship for an emerging MS specialist, and $50,000 for the national Stepping Stones financial assistance program.

We address the challenges of each

person whose life is affected by MS

• Over100 children from across Florida attended Kids Camp, a weekend retreat for children ages 7-13 who have a close relative with MS. Kids Camp featured swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts and other camp activities. Kids also participated in the “MS Experience,” an interactive educational activity facilitated by licensed mental health counselors which simulates symptoms of MS.

•Having a healthy relationship is hard work even in the best of times. MS can sometimes make it even harder. 40 couples from North Florida attended a weekend retreat designed to help them to reconnect and strengthen their relationship, meet other couples living with the disease and enjoy a relaxing weekend together.•The Chapter hosted the fifth annual Women’s Retreat for 115 women living with MS in North Florida. Women are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with MS than men. This retreat was an opportunity to bond with other women living with MS, learn more about the disease, connect with healthcare professionals and enjoy a fun weekend.

•Yard work, household repairs, moving furniture, scrubbing windows, de-cluttering the house, painting, organizing, pressure washing, and heavy cleaning are some of the projects that were completed throughout the year during MS Service Day. Over 175 volunteers donated their time and skills to 25 very grateful homes whose disability prevents them from doing it themselves.

AdvocacyWe have much to celebrate in the area of advocacy this year. This year we worked collaboratively to urge the continued inclusion of all MS disease modifying drugs on the preferred Medicaid drug list. Now, all MS drugs are on the preferred drug list. Each year this is reviewed by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. In a statewide effort, the Chapter joined efforts with other organiza-tions to educate our state legislators on the adverse effects of slash-ing Medicaid programs to our vulnerable population. The Florida chapters serve 30,000 MS clients every day. Approximately 10-15% of those persons rely on Medicaid for healthcare and financial as-sistance. With the shift towards a statewide managed care Medicaid plan, our primary concern remains the need for thorough access to MS specialists. Secondly, we remain concerned about keeping the out-of-pocket fees low for our population who already pay $1,500 to $2,000 each month for their disease modifying drugs. Lastly, we strongly encour-aged the House and Senate to adopt a Community Based Care plan for Long Term Care options. For our MS clients who desire to return to work, however cannot risk losing Medicaid benefits, we strongly encouraged the House and Senate to look at how Florida can adopt the “Medicaid Buy-In” program.feeds, district visits with both the state and federal elected officials in the chapter region as well as Governmental Relations Conference (GRC) Calls with advocates.Looking forward to FY 12 brings more opportunities with a full-time staff person on the ground and the joys of an election year with new possibilities.

We are activists.

Volunteers

This year, more than 1025 Volunteers across the North Florida Chapter came together to be servant leaders. Whether it was installing a handrail during MS Service Day, or an early morning of loading luggage for all cyclists before the start of Bike MS: PGA TOUR Cycle to the Shore, every volunteer has made a long-lasting impression on those af-fected by MS. Volunteers are more than devoted servants; they are advocates, fundraisers, and the driving force be-hind the movement of The National MS Society. The North Florida Chapter had the pleasure of honoring the following individuals, corporations and partners at this year’s annual meeting:

2011 Annual Meeting Awards and Winners:

Team Black: Volunteers of the Year

Everbank: Corporation of the Year

Tina Butterfield: Partner in Hope

Bruce Reid and Linda Bushong-Reid: Fundraisers of the Year

Madison Yearwood & Phillip Lynch: Caregivers of the Year

Jeff Lott: Past Board Chair Award

We mobilize the talents and resources of people who want to do something about MS NOW.

These honorees go above and beyond by donating their time, energy, and talents to the North Florida Chapter of the National MS Society.

We truly salute and thank our numerous volunteers, board members, and community partners for making efforts in creating a world free of MS.

At year end we can say that the Medicaid Managed Care Plan is still in review with the US Dept of Health and Human Services. FY 12’ should bring new directives from HHS as to how to proceed with the Managed Care proposal and Medicaid Pilot Programs.

Moving on to Federal efforts, the Chapter took the largest contingency to the Public Policy Conference and Hill Visits with our Congressmen and women. Seven North FL advocates participated in 15 visits with our Representatives. Follow-up visits during Congressional Recess in the summer were also completed to continue an on-going line of communication year round.

Year round advocacy efforts include website updates, social media

Development

2011 was another record-breaking year for fundraising for the North Florida Chapter. We celebrated our 25th anniversary PGA TOUR Bike MS: Cycle to the Shore with a new finish line in Daytona Beach. The momentum for Mud Run continues, with incredible growth in its 3rd year. This event, which started with the Society in Jacksonville, is now a major national initiative for the Society. Walk MS, the On the Move Luncheon, and the individual giving campaign also contributed to our success, allowing us to make our single largest contribution to MS research to date, over three quarters of a million dollars. We value the strong commitment of our valued corporate partners including: PGA TOUR, Suddath, Kangaroo Express, Wells Fargo, Sam’s Club, Ring Power, Solantic and the Donald C. McGraw Foundation.

Mud Run MS Runners got dirty for a good cause on Saturday, March 26, 2011, as they sloshed their way toward a world free of MS in the third annual Mud Run MS Jacksonville, a 10K bootcamp-style obstacle course gushing with mud. Mud Run MS Jacksonville, presented by Suddath, is one of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, North Florida Chapter’s main annual fundraisers. The run took place at the Equestrian Center in Jacksonville, Florida, attracting over 3,700 runners ranging from military members and serious athletes to thrill-seeking civilians. The course ended in a giant mudslide with Jacksonville Fire & Rescue on standby to hose down participants. Bystanders watched their friends and family—sometimes decked out in costume—get muddy within a lively festival atmosphere. The run raised $500,000 for MS research, funding and chapter programs and services.
