Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-tra-ditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields.

> Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administra-tion, Student Life and University Advancement. Governance is through the State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors and through the university’s Council of Trustees.

> Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 bac-calaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in coopera-tion with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

> Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per year.

> Cost —About $5,358 per semester for Pennsylva-nia residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $13,396 for non-residents.

> School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, origi-nally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

Season PreviewMany times when a coaching change is made the need for a “new look and feel” to a program is needed or is pledged by the incoming coach. That is not the case for the Bloomsburg University softball team. In fact it would be quite the opposite.

New head coach Susan Kocher doesn’t feel the need to change much from the way former coach Jan Hutchinson did it. And why would she. Kocher was a former player for the Huskies and then spent over 20 years as the assistant coach to Hutchinson and one of the premier programs in all of NCAA Division II.

As the new head coach Kocher not only takes over a solid program with a great history, she does on a team featuring three returning All-Americans.

“We had a good fall and winter season,” said Kocher. “The team has been very motivated and has been looking for-ward to getting the season started. “

“Having three returning All-Americans and the nucleus of the team returning which is a nice luxury to have,” Kocher continued. “They bring good leadership skills and are excited to be playing. And with seven freshmen on the team this season I will need them to take some off the pressure of the young players.”

POSITION BY POSITION

PitchingSenior Shavaun Fisher, a second team All-American last year, returns for her final year. Fisher, who went 35-7 a year ago, carried the Huskies in the post-season and has worked hard on her game to have even a stronger arsenal of pitches available.

Sophomore Cait Paine did everything and more that was asked of her last year by the coaching staff. As a first year pitcher she helped shoulder the pitching load for the Huskies and posted a record of 15-1 while earning second team All-PSAC Central honors. Paine has worked hard to improve all of her pitches and should be even more dangerous in 2011.

Joining Fisher and Paine in the circle will be Mandi Black. The freshman, who can also play third and the outfield, is a tremendous talent and will add depth to the Huskies.

InfieldThe Huskies feature one of their most flexible group of players in many years around the infield. This ability to play more than one position should give the Bloomsburg coaching staff lots of options throughout the season.

At first base Sam Pientack, who can also play third and catch, is a pure power hitter and led the Huskies in home runs last year with 10. The Huskies will be looking for more offensive consistency from her this sea-son. As a catcher she has all the tools to be a great one behind the plate.

Also seeing time at first base will be Mandy Leach, a former shortstop, who may get to see some time at her old spot this year. Leach, who drove in 24 runs last season, has improved offensively each year and the Hus-kies coaching staff looks for even more consistency this season.

Sam Pientack Hit 10 Home Runs in 2010

Season Preview

Jenna Hampton will be the third person in the mix for the Huskies at first and will also see some time at third. Hamp-ton can drive the ball as well as hit it to the gaps as evidenced by her 11 doubles last season.

At second base Danielle Lazorka, a second team All-American last year, is one of the leaders by example on the team. Lazorka, who will see time at shortstop this season as well, was one of the toughest to strikeout in all of D-II last year with just three in nearly 180 at-bats.

Joining Lazorka in the middle of the infield with be Mandi Baer. The freshman will see time at both second and short and will bring both speed and a good bat to the lineup.

Three freshmen, Rachell Fredell, Jolee Youngblood and Chrissy Belko will also see time in the infield for the Huskies. Fredell, who can play third and catch, has good softball sense and a strong bat. Youngblood and Belko both have good power and run very well. They will add depth in the infield.

OutfieldThe Huskies return a veteran outfield in 2011 led by Emily Young and Lori Neyhard. Young has a strong bat and has been a power threat for the Huskies hitting five home runs a year ago. Neyhard has started 139 games in her career and has good outfield instincts and a strong arm. Look for both to have big senior seasons.

Joining them will be sophomore Ryachelle Kuhns who is a tremendous defensive player with a great arm and an improving bat. In addition look for Lyndsay Busler and Hannah Moir to add depth to the outfield. Busler has a strong arm and big bat, while Moir is a slap hitter with good speed.

CatcherThird team All-American Lacy Mauro returns for her senior sea-son. The team’s leader in RBI last season, Mauro is a gifted athlete who handles pressure well. When not catching, look for Mauro to play some outfield, where she started her career for the Huskies.

OVERALL

While there has been a change at the top of the coaching lad-der for the Huskies, the goals have not changed at all. Each year Bloomsburg’s coaches want to perform well enough to make the PSAC playoffs and from there the NCAA playoffs and hopefully the NCAA championship round.

“What we hope to accomplish is the same year in and year out, “said Kocher. “There is a strong tradition here and now that another former player, Dee Wolfe, is on the coaching staff, that tradition is strengthened.”

Lacy Mauro Was Named Third Team All-American in 2010

Susan Kocher HeadCoach•FirstSeason Bloomsburg ‘87

Susan Kocher was named the Huskies head softball coach in July, 2010. Kocher replaced the legendary coach Jan Hutchinson who retired at the end of the 2010 season after 33 years of coaching.

Kocher spent 23 years as an assistant after playing four years for Hutchinson. Combined she has been part of 1,104 wins as both player and coach.

As an assistant coach Kocher was an integral part of the Huskies great success over the last two decades. As the Huskies pitching coach she has coached eight players to All-American status, including 2010 second team All-American Shavaun Fisher who posted 35 wins, second most all-time for a single season in school history. In addition, under Kocher’s watch 32 no-hit-ters, six of them perfect games, were tossed while she served as the pitching coach.

A two-time All-American herself and three-time All-PSAC selection as a pitcher at Bloomsburg, Kocher is the only pitcher in school history to throw a perfect game and a no-hitter on the same day.

In addition, she had a career record of 71-13 and boasted an earned run average of 0.47. She struck out 485 batters and threw eight no-hitters for the Hus-kies, including two perfect games. At the plate, she had a fine career as a hitter, with 71 RBI and 65 runs scored.

A 1987 graduate of Bloomsburg University, Kocher was inducted into the Bloomsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

She is a native of Camp Hill, PA, and graduated Cedar Cresy High School and was named an ASA All-American.

Kocher’s Portfolio As A Player

• Two-Time All-American

• Three-Time All-PSAC selection

• Career record of 71-13

•Threw eight no-hitters and struck out 485 batters as a Husky

• Career 71 RBI and 65 runs scored

Dee Wolfe AssistantCoach•FirstSeason Bloomsburg‘05

In 2011, Wolfe begins her first season as the Huskies assistant coach. She has spent the last five seasons as a volunteer assistant with the team after playing for the Huskies for four seasons.

As a player with the Huskies, Wolfe was a three-time All-PSAC selection—including twice as a first team choice—and was also named All-Region once by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She finished her career with seven home runs and 95 runs batted in, the 12th most by any player in school history. Her best season came as a senior in 2005 when she hit .401 with four homers, 42 RBI, and a team-high 20 dou-bles. As a junior she had a homer and 31 RBI.

Head Coach Susan Kocher is also looking forward to working with Wolfe. “Dee brings a wealth of knowl-edge from her years as both a player and volunteer with our program,” said Kocher. “We are both very excited about working together.”

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
