Head coach Rocco Salomone has transformed the College at Brockport Golden Eagle football team into one of the most highly regarded programs in the country since he took the helm in 1994.

After a 2-8 record in 2010, his overall record stands at 94-69-1 (.573 winning percentage).

Five Golden Eagles have earned First-Team All-American status during his tenure with Tom Massey, Josh Warner, Jay Johnson, Mike Condello and Cuyler Groth each reaching the pinnacle of Division III football.

Salomone led the team to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2000-2003, including an NCAA Quarterfi nals appearance in 2002.

In 2010, the Golden Eagles ranked in the top fi ve of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in the following team categories: fi fth in scoring offense (24.7 points per game), second in total offense (375.2 yards per game), second in rushing (196.2 yards per game), third in passing (179 yards per game), fi rst in fi rst downs

(22.8 per game), fi rst in third-down conversion rate (41.9 percent) and fi rst in fourth-down conversions (55.2 percent). Brockport’s Nate Bull recorded multiple 20-plus tackle games, and his 148 tackles were second-most in school history. Bull ranked third among all Division III players with his 148 tackles. Bull, Pat Hashey and Sean Kearney earned spots on the year-ending NJAC All-Conference team while wide receiver Jake Spalik was named NJAC Offensive Rookie of the Year. Bull and Kearney each played in the D3 Senior Classic.

The 2009 season saw the Golden Eagles break over 20 school records and the offense scored more and passed for more yards than any team in school history. Nine Golden Eagles earned NJAC All-Conference honors and Matt Newman was selected to play in the Division III senior all-star game. Senior Cevon Carver was named to the All-Region team.

The 2008 season ended with a thrilling 70-68 victory in the ECAC Northwest Bowl game against Hartwick College. Running back Garet Lynch set several scoring and rushing records including the most yards gain in a half with 380 yards gained in the fi rst half against Hartwick. Lynch became the all-time leader in scoring in a game, season and career. Lynch, along with offensive lineman Cuyler Groth, were named to the All-Region team.

The 2007 campaign saw Salomone win his 80th career game with an 18-14 win over Apprentice. The Golden Eagles fi nished 5-5 overall, including four losses to NCAA Division III Tournament teams in their fi nal season in the Atlantic Central Football Conference. He became the all-time winningest football coach at Brockport with a 46-0 victory over Mount Ida in 2001.

The 2003 season featured a 6-0 start and a 9-1 regular season mark. Brockport hosted a fi rst round NCAA playoff contest and fi nished 19th in the AFCA national coaches’ poll. The Golden Eagles were also #20 in the D3football.com poll and #25 in the Football Gazettte poll.

A 1988 College at Brockport graduate and a full-time football staff member since 1990, Salomone was named the eighth head coach in the program’s history on Nov. 21, 1994. Just the second alumnus to be Brockport’s head coach (joining Gerry D’Agostino ’49, who coached from 1964 to 1973), Salomone replaced Ed Matejkovic, who stepped down at the end of the 1994 season.

Salomone guided his 2002 squad to an 8-2 regular season record and the Golden Eagles were selected to the playoffs. Brockport posted a record fi ve shutouts and fi nished the year leading all of NCAA Division III in scoring defense and pass effi ciency defense, while ranking seventh in total defense. The Golden Eagles were named the ECAC Division III Team of the Year and won the Lambert Trophy. The 2002 team broke many school records, including wins in a season with 10. Defensive lineman Mike Condello was a consensus All-American for the Golden Eagles.

The 2001 campaign featured a seven-game winning streak and an eventual NCAA playoff team. All-American linebacker Jay Johnson capped off his season by starring in the prestigious Aztec Bowl and later signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Brockport’s program took a step up to the national level for the fi rst time in its 54-year history, posting an undefeated campaign in 2000 and earning its fi rst NCAA playoff berth. Brockport led all NCAA divisions in scoring defense and allowed just 44 points and fi ve total touchdowns all year. All-American offensive lineman Josh Warner later signed with the New York Giants and earned a ring as a starter with the Berlin Thunder, the 2001 World League Champions.

In 1997, Brockport won all fi ve home games, including a thrilling 30-28 victory over NCAA playoff-bound Cortland in the season fi nale. The following year the squad closed out with three straight wins, including victories over NCAA playoff-bound College of New Jersey, and rival Cortland. It was the third year in a row Brockport had beaten Cortland, a fi rst in the 50-year series.

Salomone was a two-year starter at Brockport (1986-87) after stints at Juniata College (1983) and East Stroudsburg (1984-85, including a redshirt year in ’84). He and his brother, Blase Salomone, were two of the fi rst recruits for Matejkovic, who took over as head coach in 1986. After his senior year, Salomone had tryouts with several teams, including the New England Patriots and New York Giants.

He was a graduate assistant under Matejkovic in 1988 before taking a position as the offensive and defensive line coach at Camp Hill (PA) High School in 1989. He returned to Brockport the following fall as Matejkovic’s fi rst full-time assistant. In his fi rst season, he coached the running backs then moved to the defensive side, later serving as the defensive coordinator in 1993 and 1994.

Salomone attended Arundel High School in Maryland for two years before his family moved to Carlisle, Pa., for his junior and senior years. A 1983 graduate of Carlisle High School, he was a fi rst-team All-State selection as a junior and led his team to an undefeated season and the Pennsylvania 4A state title.

EJ Genzano (second from left) with teammates, Director of Athletics Noah LeFevre and head coach Rocco Salomone present a check to Sally Kramer from the regional Muscular Dystrophy Association at the end of the 2010 season.

Every time Brockport kicker E.J. Genzano steps onto the fi eld for a fi eld goal or extra point attempt, under his “Kicking for the Cure” efforts, all proceeds will go to raise awareness and money for Muscular Dystrophy research.

When his parents, Emilio and Jill Genzano, adopted Joey from Omaha, Neb., E.J. was thrilled he’d fi nally have his little brother. Someone to play sports with and get into mischief the way broth-ers often do.

But when Joey arrived into the family’s home in Guilderland, N.Y. when E.J. was 5 years old, his parents had a warning for E.J.: Something was wrong with Joey, and the family had no idea what was plaguing the child.

Neither did his doctors, until he was 2 ½ years old, when his doc-tor at Strong Memorial Hospital confi rmed the bad news: Joey was suffering from Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy, a rare disease that affects the body’s muscles and other vital organs.

Babies such as Joey, who was believed to have been born with the disorder, suffer from a more severe form of the disease. As a re-sult, among the symptoms, Joey lacks tone on his body’s muscles, his cheeks sag in on his face and he’s unable to speak in complete sentences.

Genzano wants to do his share to support his younger brother. After going to a Brockport men’s ice hockey home game last year, Genzano witnessed the team’s annual ‘Saves for a Cure’ charity,

where any save made by a Brockport goalie raised money for can-cer treatment. The cause was started by Todd Sheridan (Edison, NJ), a 2010 graduate and cancer survivor.

Along with his parents, Joey attended several of Brockport’s games in 2009, and was often in the stands sporting a homemade No. 84 jersey or other Brockport paraphernalia.

Emilio Genzano said Joey’s condition is terminal and that most children with MMD don’t make it out of their teenage years. In-cluding fundraising efforts in his hometown, E.J., Jill and Emilio have raised more than $500,000 for Muscular Dystrophy research.
